Ok so im going to root my phone and install a hero build, my first question i, will installing a new radio change my signal amount, right now i have an iphone, a blackberry curve, and a g1, the g1 is the only phone that gets signal all the time in my house. Also I have a class 4sd, i understand that these roms do automatically apps to sd, will having a class 4 make my system slow, and will class 4 work with swap. and the final question is whitch hero rom has sms working? tried to search but couldn't find anything. thanks.
1. Better reception.
2. I use a Class 4 8GB with 32MB linux swap, no adverse speed effects to my knowledge.
3. Most Hero ROMs are getting 99% of messages, I use JACHero 2.7.4 LITE version, which uses the default launcher.
4. Taylor Swift is a thug, yo.
so whats the difference between light, does using a different launcher slow it down?

light doesnt use "rosie" aka lancher..lite uses the default google lancher stuff..no htc widgets etc.
well the main reason i have to get this rom is for the widgets, so i geuss i need the full one, and using the full version with a class 4 sd? and whitch version is the newest with the texting working?

I only heard good things about drizzy Drake Rogers V3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=546984
but you would have to ask someone else about the hero roms its way too mant to choose from
im using jachero 1.3. im running a 4 gig class 4 2.6/900/114mb. i have no lag, no htc loading screen. The only lag i notice is getting out of contacts and the weather widget for some reason. Oh also overclocked down to 383. I getting all sms/mms. However 99.9% of my texts are now on gv but when i get them to my phone i always get them.
I don't have a data plan so I wonder if that will affect my texts I'm leaning toward jacheroski because of the many users but I'm open to comments
I meant I'm leaning towards jachero, is jacheroski a light version

personally, i think drizzy's personal hero v3 runs great. one of the fastest heros i've run so far. if you want stability, maybe try JACHeroski 2.7.3 Lite. it's hero, but with a cupcake feel to it.
Does jacheroski give hero widgets? And I want to get the ime keyboard, maybey drizzy is the one

none of the lite heros have hero widgets. do you mean manup's hero widgets? or twitter, weather flip clock, etc widgets?

almost every buiild nowadays has the htc_ime keyboard. JACHeroski does have those widgets, but you're better off trying his newer heros, JACxHERO, or Drizzy's new heros. Drizzy's personal hero doesn't have all the hero widget, neither does his superlite. But get the FULL hero off of his thread and that has the full hero experience. i haven't run the full drizzy hero, but his personal is blazing fast.
whitch widgets does his personall not have, i cant seem to find a description in his thread.
yah, he doesn't say which he doesn't have.. i'm not completely sure right now. i just flashed cyanogens newest... sorry man :\
thought I'd add my 2p to this.
I've used the jachero ROM and had to change back
I received less than 10% of my texts and MMS's (yes, literally, it kept receiving an old one over and over when people text me)
If you upgrade to a newer version (even 0.1 upgrade) then you lose all your settings etc
Very slow when going from an app or settings screen back to home screen (takes 20 seconds or so)
I missed loads of calls, when someone phoned me it vibrated, screen went black and no buttong responded, when it eventually played the ringtone and showed me who was calling and the buttons responded it had gone to voicemail.
i am using jac v3r2... i love it. i seem to get most of my sms. the only person that i know i fail to recieve texts from is one of my friends but she has a g1 and she always has problems with her phone so i am not sure if it is on her end or mine...

So at first when I switched to the AOSP 1.6 ROM I was a little bummed that my beautiful phone was now...ugly. But! After a while I found little things, here and there, that slowly but surely began to make 1.6 better and better:
This is using a combination of metamorph (and various themes), Home++ and the HTC_IME keyboard (ported over from 1.5)
If you're on the fence between 1.6 and 1.5, let this be your nudge! I think my phone looks better now than it did even with Sense and it's a heck of a lot faster too!
I'm just really excited about this that's all. Anyone else manage to get 1.6 lookin' good?
Though I'm happy to hear that you've successfully switched -- I'd like to say that the majority of the people here probably didn't switch yet, because of few reasons (so far that I know of). Apparently 1.6 seems to not allow some people to use SMS and/or Bluetooth? If this has been fixed, then great -- I'd like to try it out. Otherwise, I don't know that I want to spend 10 minutes switching real quick, just to test SMS. I don't use bluetooth, so that wouldn't be a problem for me, though Home++ looks sweet!!. How have things gone for you?
if i could get 7 homescreens on 1.6 i'd jump in a heartbeat because of metamorph.
Ya I almost droped back down to 1.5 because I didn't have Sense, but now I'm using GDE and the better keyboard app. Hey how did you get the bootscreen changed on it?
If you want more info on Home++, here is their official page: link.
I love home++
There's a sweeter home beta to spruce it up to, but I would rather have eclair sense. It just looks so smooth, hard to beat. I was at my it dept today andran onto q fellow xda'er with a nexus. I'm jealous. Sucks that most of the sickest phones are on gsm, and cdma comes behind 6mo to never. Here I sit with Sprint though. Love the speed and data plan. Dangit.

There is a metamorph 2.0 extension pack that has an extended home app that allows you up to 10 home screens. It also allows landscape homescreen which is pretty cool.
I will get the links from another thread and post them back here in a minute.
Update:
Here is the link to the Metamorph 2.0 stock theme : http://android-stock-theme.googlecode.com/files/Android-2.0-Stock-Theme-v1.2.zip
And the Add on that will give you the 10 screens as well as some other extras: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=274033&d=1264741520
The best part is that it looks and acts like a stock AOSP 1.6/2.0 rom without any of the wierd behaviors of the other home replacements.
Thanks to Gregalous for the Links !
this is the exact set up I was going to do. the only thing that was stopping me was the constant syncing gmail, cal and stuff on aosp 1.6. Is that still an issue?
I do. If I were to switch to 1.6 I would end up building my own custom version and frankly I've spent enough time with my 1.5 rom.

so i tried this with home++ and i gotta say, it was really awesome. but i STILL ended up going back to 1.5 sense because i missed htc's widgets too much. three of my homescreens are all htc sense widgets... i just can't live without em!

You can! If you dont want to use a new home app then you can get AdvancedLauncher.apk (available in many metamorph themes) allows you to change the number of home screens among other things

well I'm not sure what I was thinking of. I guess maybe aosp 2.01? I don't know but I am sure glad you cleared it up for me! I have spent all morning getting it all hooked up and this is exactly what I was wanting. The 1.6 market is reason enough for me! it is light years better than 1.5 market.
I have quiet's 1.6 with gbhil's Googlebits, superuser, and quiet's headset fix. Everything works besides BT, don't care personally.

My browser double posted, sorry.
I didnt even think about not having facebook sync until you mentioned it, and I was going to try this out tonight lol.
Is it real bad without it? I have a little hatred in me for contacts without pictures, thats the main thing I guess, dont really use the whole updates and all that tab as it runs kinda slow when I can just use an app. Is there anyway to pull pictures down without Sense?
Also, I hope no one minds me asking this here but I just want to make sure im going to do this right if I do.
Im currently running fresh 1.1 with Modoco's custom kernel and 2.1 icons and want to try out AOSP 1.6
So I should:
1. Create a backup
2. Wipe my phone (will this remove root access forcing me to reroot?)
3. Flash AOSP 1.6
4. Can I load in Modocos custom kernel?
5. Get metamorph etc going blah blah
Any help is appreciated thanks.
before going on the nexus one, I had a hero htc and strut really faster than the nexus of the home, the lag does not the hero and the nexus with snapdragon yes
After rooting and installing a custom rom (tried both cyan & modaco desire), the lag disappeared. I believe a large portion is due to the extra memory freed up running these roms.
When google releases their next OTA with himem, and some other tweaks, it should (hopefully) be fixed for non-rooted users.
I have heard some folks using 2.1 on their Droid that it's a tad bit laggy as well.

Yeah, the magic is running 320x480 (vs 480x800), im assuming still on android 1.6. The processor speed difference should be able to make up for it, but it seems Android 2.1 is the main reason for the lag at the moment...perhaps a background process?
Also, do you have animated wallpaper enabled?
I'm currently on MoDaCo Desire a19, using SetCPU @ 998mhz, and using the Social Live Wallpaper, and the screen movement is smooth as silk. Prior, I was using a21, and had the same homescreen lag I had on the stock rom.
Using home++ is smooth
yes it is the resolution(480x800) that is poorly managed but why ?

Home++ beta 0.8.0.7.15 from their website allows live wallpaper.
Try switching to a different live wallpaper and see if you see any performance increase. Are you using the stock N1 live wps or one that is made by someone else?
no im using cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and sometimes desire rom alpha 21
I was always aware of it being not so smooth but when I finally compared it to an older HTC Magic I was disappointed... it's definitely smoother on the magic. I'm running CM btw, and I didn't notice any improvement in smoothness after flashing.
Yeah, that's very odd. After I flashed it, there's a night and day difference.
Have you tried removing all your widgets & shortcuts to see if it reduces the lag at all? Then add them one at a time to see if something's screwing with it?
Dunno why it would have that big of an impact, but to be honest, sometimes the dumb things fix more than one would think, hahaha.

Nope, only one of the stock wallpapers (the one with the red rock).
I have noticed that if you add shortcuts to several contacts, performance plummets. Could you check and see if the same happens to you?
With the stock ROM I get a lot of lag too. Home++ really helps, but i want live wallpaper and 3D launcher.

I added 20 contacts, and while there was a minor slowdown initially swiping to that page, it's not running that much slower overall.
I'm using TaskPanel, and kill everything but the HTC sense, mail, messaging, live wallpaper processes on phone start up. Then I don't touch the thing, and have nothing on it's autokill list (I let android deal with it). I found that if I don't do this, the FM Radio app along with a couple others autorun, and android never kills them, even if they are never used.
At this moment, after having the phone on for 22 hours, I have 179MB of free memory.
(Using the following on my home screen: Social Live Wallpaper, HTC Big clock w/ animated weather, TaskPanel 4x1 widget, last.fm widget, htc calendar, htc photo album, power control, htc friendstream, htc news, and the rest of the empty space is filled with program shortcuts.)
I don't think it have anything to do with the resolution. I think it have everything to do with the new launcher. Remember, when Droid came out it had the pull up launcher and 2.1 immediately came out it had a different launcher. I have a feeling it was rushed and not optimized. I could be wrong but i have a funny feeling the next release will probably be better.
For now I'm using Enom rom with the Manup hero like theme and goodies. I limited the launcher screens to 3 screens to improve it a little better to me (albeit 3 screens is more than all i need so I'm cool with it).

I for one like Sense, well I am not running a Sense ROM now I do miss a few things. So I wanted to see what people dis like and like about it and well maybe help some of us out. You know, finding way to forget about Sense.
I am running Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 now.
Like:
1: Flash {Cant find a work around}
2: Widgets
a: Peep {There is twitter but I like how dark peep is}
b: Friend Stream
c: Calender {Cant find a replacement }
d: Contact {Contact Widget does a great job as a replacement }
3: The ringer getting low when you pick up the phone {Cant find a work around}
Other than that, I cant say I miss Sense all to much, to tell the truth I am really liking adw launcher.
But if you have anything that helps replace what Sense does give you should add a list and if you are just missing something you should ask here, maybe one of us will be able to help you out.

I like AOSP because it is much faster than Sense regardless of what you do to speed it up. I love the look of sense, but after buying a couple of apps and downloading others I can say that I do not miss Sense.
LauncherPro Plus-He is working on Sense like widgets. I now use this instead of Rosie.
Beautiful Widgets or Fancy Widgets- imitates Weather and clock from Sense. You'll have to find a fancy widget download online as they had a C&D order from HTC.
Extended Controls- Allows more options than the power control widget
CalWidget-Calander Widget on your home screen. I think you can change text and background color with this one.
I'm not a social networking freak so I don't care about those, but I know that they will get friendstream working on aosp. And you can still get all the other apps for aosp.
There is a setting somewhere to change the ringer volume on phone movement. I don't have CM6 flashed anymore, but I know its in the settings somehwere

Fyi nfinitefx45 just got jit working on a sense rom. I'm using it on my red dawn as I type. I'm getting between 4.4-4.8 on linpack and that's with all the extra crap I've got on my rom.
The days of saying aosp is faster is at an end. I've got no lag. Running smooth and extremely fast plus have sense and all the Widgets that come with it.
Sense will find a way onto froyo eventually and will be just as fast as aosp
It really does seem that AOSP can be just as great as Sense as far as cosmetics. So the only thing left is flash, is there any way to get flash working on ASOP 2.1 or the 2.2 we have now?
Thank you all for the great input!

What about quadrant?
Some will never give up on Sense. I used to hate AOSP. I didn't like the look and missed all the extra's found in Sense.Right now I keep switching between froyo and Sense. If only someone could get all the sense apps working with AOSP.
Flash will never come to the hero because it's not built for it. I love sense, but i've learned to get by in froyo. The main thing I miss is the nice widgets, but there are some nice replacements in the market. I use digiclock widget and the weather channel. For twitter, seesmic is better than anything and it is fast. Launcher pro will let you customize your bottom row just about any way you want and will let you have 7 home screens like sense. If you have your homescreen laid out just how you like it in sense, then it's not that hard to recreate it in AOSP, unless you use a lot of sense Widgets.

We've had Flash for quite a while now.
Sense just seems like a waste of memory to me. Everything can be duplicated with Market widgets.
I really wish I knew what people saw in it, I hate it with a passion.
The way I see it is, Sense UI does offer things that other phones dont have and HTC has stayed a head of the game a little by giving us all just a little bit extra (flash)
On top of that, how many themes are out there for AWR or Luncher Pro? Well Sense if at heart a big theme, Things are made to go to gather and its simple and dark.
But anyway, How do we get Flash with out Sense?

Have you tested the new sensebuild /w jit on quadrant? It is a better benchmark than linpack, if for no other reason than it tests more than floating point calculations.

haha FAIL! But I am sure he is allowed to change his mind. He made that post almost a month ago, plenty of time to change his mind.....
But yeah I don't see whats so good about it. I do miss swype but I can really go w/o it as i mostly use my QWERTY or the speech recognition anyway.
All I really use is the live wallpapers and app2sd. Only reason I installed froyo was for app2sd cause my phone kept warning me about low memory.
yup changed my mind it seemed like woo hooo but at the end of the day it just waz 2.1 with live wallpaper i mean maybe under its some major diffrence iam missing but i cant c it
My reasons for 2.2
For storage, the CM6 ROM left me with 138MB or so after flashing, which is way more than stock with all its bloatware. You add native a2sd in the mix and it gets even better. For performance you have JIT which makes things nice and speedy (and it's customizable in CM6). Then you have the neat feature apps that google just released like chrome to phone and the new voice search. Plus other things I'm totally forgetting right now.
Now, you say you missed the friendstream widget and there are alternatives in the market, but, I've been using tweetdeck beta and it's sick! I don't hardly use the facebook and twitter apps anymore! The only thing missing is a widget, which I think they're working on.
But the best reason, I think is, why not?
I could do without Swype nowadays. I switched to Smart Keyboard and loving it. I tried using Swype again after and couldn't deal with it. I guess I only liked the gimmick with it in the beginning.
Using SetCPU 245/245 on screen off totally saves my battery life. I get up to 4 days with it!!!!
I missed Sense when switching over to Froyo but then I found LauncherPro so I'm happy.
I'm pro froyo!!!
I don't think you guys know this.
You can use swype on all the froyo ROMs. Download and install it.

Yea I fig it waz just apps to sd that waz the major thing as far as speed I didn't c a big diffrence in 2.1 to 2.2 but idk I think what drew me to the phone waz the way it waz set up on 2.1 and now its all funny don't get me wrong froyo is kool iam not saying its da worst thing u can do but I don't c any reason to keep it besides apps to sd which I don't even use
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Battery life under 2.2 is noticeably better.. even without Setcpu...
but with it sure is nice
I'm not getting 4 days like dude above, but i'm a pretty heavy user and use my phone as a music device when i ride the motorcycle.
Only real problem is a stable wifi tethering app.
YMMV.

This complete thread has touched my thoughts and feelings exactly, I recently installed CM 6 with froyo on my slide, and yes, it is less bloated a tad snappier, yes it has JIT, APPS2SD and all that which is great it still does not have keyboard function and shift key lights (which is not necessary but it is OEM stock, I too am missing the original espresso sense UI, if I could at least get APPSTOSD on the stock UI, I would seriously think of going back......

If I remember correctly eugene's Slidemeroot5r1rom is the closest to what you are looking for, it is a 2.1 rom that is stock w/a2sd

And ChiefzReloaded's CR_MOD_1.35.531_OTA Full ROM has it as well.

I would suggest ChiefzReloaded's ROM if you want stock. I am still very undecided about CM Froyo. I think it has some good advantages as mentioned above but I am having a hard time because I have been looking at vanilla android for more than a year on my G1. For the most part I just don't like looking at the vanilla lockscreen anymore. I like the expresso/sense style of lockscreens.
Go ahead and at me to the list on this one too. Beenrunning CM6 for a while and not niticing much of any difference too. Battery last the same for me but then I do have a lot of internet driven apps installed. I admit the main reason for me to switch bacc to 2.1 would be the friend stream from the contacts view. If could add it to 2.2 I would happy with that. Haven't seen anything in the market that can help replace that for me.
So I guess a lot of ppl feel the same way today iam off from wrk iam go back to 2.1 I mean ant nothing holding me to froyo

Ya'll are doing something wrong if froyo isnt faster. Using the ockernals? Running linpack and quadrant, you can see custom is 10x faster than stock.
Yeah sence is nicer, but thats not enough to leave cm6 for me. I like the speed, apps2sd, livewallpaper, customization, etc

I am usuing all the up to date stuff and I do see a slight processor speed uncrease, very little battery life increase, and a definite memory increase. Other than that, froyo seems very "over-rated."
I guess it depends on the person and what he/she wants.
To me froyo is just a bunch of useless customizations with 2 or 3 nifty features.
Espresso froyo better be better than cm6 otherwise android needs some major software improvements...
lettin the hussy role on my MT3G Slide
This is just out of curiosity, but which do you like more and why?

I like cyanogen because it has more features but I use liberated because cyanogen lacks the sense UI which I love

I like cm6 because live wallpapers

I don't use my phone too much.with cyanogen, my battery lasts forever.so cyanogen for me.

Pretty much the same as Mast above. I keep a nandroid backup of CM6 as well as Liberated on my phone, and switch back and forth, but spend 90% of my time in Liberated.
I can't wait for "Liberated" 2.2...
CM6. Here's why...
Freedom, battery life, speed, lack of Sense (I hated it), and flexibility.
CM6...im loving the battery life, the speed, and the flexibility. I was hesitant to make the switch from Liberated at first because I'd lose Sense...but I dont miss Sense at all.
I don't even remember what Sense feels like. I just don't like the linkage in contacts. Liberated had been improved a lot with features that comparable with CM6 so I think I'm going to nandroid both for fun.
I'm still on the fence, I want to try and give Cyanogen another shot (I only ran it for a few hours before going back to Liberated), but right now I'm running Liberated, mainly because I'm still very close to the stock ROM that I'm comfortable with, while still getting perks like root, tethering, and a lack of bloatware. One thing I really hate about Cyanogen in comparison to Liberated/Stock is the call screen. When someone calls you and it has the choice to answer/deny, I think the stock looks a million times better. I also dont like the status bar
I prefer CM6 all day everyday.
I hate the HTC dialer and contacts replacement, "people". I don't need more category possibilities for my contacts than I have contacts. I want to be able to bring up contacts and do a one touch dial, without having to have a full page widget to access favorites quickly.
I don't like that with the Sense UI, HTC has taken Android so far from AOSP that is takes months for them to get updates complete after the Nexus One is updated. Then it takes more months for carriers to approve those updates for use on branded phones.
Sense is nonsense, IMO. Of course you may feel differently, and that's why we have choice.
Dito on the contacts "people" list. You just remind me where was my head ache. Both roms do have goods and bads
for those of your going back and forth between liberated and cm6, do you have to make any changes to your installed apps or you simply wipe everything and use clockwork to load one or the other ?
I'm with you two about the contacts; the HTC "improvements" are anything but.
However, I do like the sense dialer and a lot of other things about sense.
I used CM on my G1 from day one, and there were always little "gotchas:" lags, force closes, things that didn't quite work. That may not be the case with CM on the Aria, but I really like the way the phone works now. It even took me a while to root and try Liberated: nothing was broken.
That said, choice is beautiful. Many thanks to attn1 and everyone at CM for providing that.
Cyanogen
Because I don't like sence as much as I thought I would. Pluse I think CyanogenMod has more features.

If I dump sense for cm, will I lose the nice HTC flash player integration? I understand flash in 2.2 isn't supported by aria CPU?
If the CPU didn't support Flash then how would an HTC app make it suddenly support it? You'll be fine.

The fact is flash 10.1 only works on Froyo, and if you have an Arm7 Cpu. The aria does not have the correct cpu. Flash was compiled for that cpu ONLY. What the aria has is Flash Lite from HTC, not the same.

I too have had glitches and lockups with CM that i don't have with Liberated. For those that don't like the contacts integration of HTC, then you should really try Dialer One from the market. Cm is very configurable, but Liberated to me is more stable. If not for Dialer One I would probably live with the daily lockup I had with CM6.

HTC has a proprietary flash lite. Not fully featured but in many cases sufficient. Certainly beats nothing. I like having it but doesn't make CM6 a deal breaker for me.
Ive learned not to care about Sense UI but not having App Market is an issue. I cant find things through app brain or even ways to side install them because I cant find most of the actual apps.
How do I put the App Market back into CM6? Thanks.
