Usage Profile vs ROM Version vs Battery Life - Touch GSM General

Hi Friends,
I'm a long time reader of these boards, but I don't post too much, because I don't have the knowledge to share cause unfortunately I don't have the time to invest on cooking ROMs, but I'm pretty curious about It and I've been reading about It.
First and Foremost I would like to Thank Daniel for Cooking the amazing Onyx Roms, which is what I use now on my ELFin.
I'm using Onyx 5.0.1 cause the Betas 48 and 49 don't look fine to me.... since Beta 48 the "+" buttons are bigger. I know It's for for Finger Friendly thing, but the rest of the Windows 6.5 UI still doesnt match this change and Beta 49's WM Build has a weird Bug with the Battery Display on the Today Screen where U have to double click the Clock to see the Battery again, so I stick with 5.0.1.
But aside these details, the main purpose of this post is another thing...
With Onyx 5.0.1/WinMo 6.5, I changed the way I use the phone... now I have an Unlimited Internet Plan from my Operator and I'm now Syncing all the stuff with my company's Exchange Server... that beign said I have no comparison in the past case about Battery consumption, and I really wouldn't like to Flash back to 6.1 or 6.0 and have to reconfigure everything(It's a damn lot to reconfigure). So I'm asking you guys how well are your phones doing with WnMo6.5 against mine.
Here's my Daily Usage Profile:
- I hear around 3 Hours of MP3 Daily during the Home->Work->Home Tragetory using a Bluetooth Phone.
- I Sync E-Mails from the company "as arrive" on ActiveSync during business hours
- I barely talk on the phone... really... almost NEVER.
- I Send around 200 SMS/month
At 8:00AM my Battery is at 100%... at 10:00AM It's already 86%... by the end of afternoon It's around 15%... I have to Recharge the battery every night. Does this seem pretty bad battery life for U guys? How are your Battery usage?
Ah! BTW I'm using Radio 3.34.90 and Flashed HSPL 3.10 into my Phone. ROM Version is Onyx 5.0.1.
Thanks to Everyone, specially DSIXDA for cooking the Onyx ROMs and the other Cooks putting their efforts into keeping the ELF Generation alive!

using bluetooth to hear MP3 for 2 hours really sucks up the battery compared to a wired heads ones I can say it is a good ROM you have there... try using a wired headset to hear your MP3 and you can see a big difference on your battery life

Yeah thanks for the tip... I now Turn off Bluetooth as soon as I stop playing MP3 (the Wired USB Phones from HTC are horrible compared to the Motorola S9), so I'm stick with this while Turning Off BT when not used.
I also enabled all the Power Save options on the Advanced Config Tool and darkened the Backlight a bit while using the Battery.
If U can think of anything else that could increase Battery Life, let me know.

Are you saying your battery is dead 1 day after continuously having this program activated? If so, I'm amazed the battery lasted that long! How old is your device and battery? Does the battery charge o.k. when it's plugged to a charger?
Hi Hotdog,
Thanks for your reply.
My device is 1 year old and the battery drains even when the phone is inactive(battery charges just fine).
Before installing NBD, the battery lasted like 3 days (not really an active user of the phone) and now only 1 day.
Am i the only person experiencing this issue around the forums??
Device info:
ROM version 6.6.6.666 WWE
ROM date 8/23/07
RADIO version 02.19.11
Protocol version 4.1.1309
MDA Vario T-mobile AKU2 model.
Thx.

Ive seen many people with this problem. all I can suggest to you is, lower rom numbers on WM6 use up the battery faster. I dont know why that is but that is the trend.
Im not suggesting you go out there and get 2.69 radio rom. the higher you go the more unstable the rom is. all Im saying is, it might be the radio rom mixed with WM6. try a reflash back to wm5 and see if battery is back to 3 days.
One other thing you can try is drain the battery completely, recharge it fully, drain it a second time and recharge it fully again. sometimes when you flash the battery memory gets messed up, it's happened to me once.

Thanks for the reply elmetal!
That brings me to my second question,
Is there a Radio ROM out there for my T-mobile that is stable and runs smooth under NBD 8.0?
What comes after RADIO version 02.19.11? 2.69 radio rom?
I did actually flash back to the original T-mobile NL ROM (latest version)
And there the battery is functioning as expected.
(you can really tell, in the afternoon, the battery is almost at 50% with NBD)
Thank you so much for your help! really appreciated.

hmm.. I never focus much on tmobile users with radio problems, more cingular users. some say the 2.47 works, some say the 2.69 is flawless, I personally use the cingular 2.25.11. it's the stock cingular rom and it works fine.
Im gonna give the forum a good look for tmobile radio rom threads and ill redirect you
I suggest you try the cingular 2.25.11 (being that tmobile in the us uses a lot of cingular towers) since its really really stable.
EDIT
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314235&highlight=t+mobile+radio+rom
try that, its a decent thread on the ROM workin in the UK, Im not exactly sure where you're stationed but the point is this, there's probably an existing thread out there.
Only thing is, many different people have many different results. Updating Radio ROMs is a little dangerous for me cus the calls I receive can be very important so I try not to mess with it.
Install a new radio rom, leave your phone in standby for a few hours and test texting and calling to see if itll wake up on its own, some roms wont work well. trial and error
Goodluck!

Point taken
Will do some more research on Tmobile Dutch(Netherlands) Radio Roms to see if that helps.
Thanks for all the effort elmetal!
Nope it's not the Radio Rom 2.19 is the most stable and loses less energy.
The 2.69 radio Has more problems keeping the signal so it uses more energy to maintain the signal, and of course you might lose some calls here and there.
Earlier posts do indeed have the classic basic Battery drain tips.
But what about deleting the items from the Windows\StartUp folder?
Flash a fully loaded battery.
How about borowing my new battery and see if it makes a difference since my wizard is on repair.
Some users even have reported that 8.2 actually was better on the battery then 8.3.
Some believe that it might have something to do with the memory leak problem most Wizard roms have issues with. Keeping more memory reffreshed does require more power. So try to set the weather plug in to only update mannualy set the homescreen to not time out. Or try setting up the included smartskey to overclock instead of Battery status althought i don't think that battery status causes isseus.
Or do a Combo. Drain the battery recharge it perform a hard reset or clear storage. You could also try a lower pagepool rom version, nowadays you can change the pagepool without reflashing. Lower is slower but again it uses less memory. You could also use wizard registry wizard to change the font cache to lower setting and other cache settings.
My advice is to charge as less as possible as my USB connector got ****ed.
I tried the 25.11 on T-mobile network but quit using it as it either froze the ROM or could just not connect.
Or yes you could get another phone
Also make sure you change the settings of the network registry to not automaticly scanning for the network.

I have a MDA and I am running WM6 and using the 2.69.11 radio and I have no problems. I found that changing the task manager settings so that the program actually closes when you click x helps increase free ram and also, don't use any overclocker software such as battery status(it kills your battery and it doesnt make that much of a difference anyways...). Another thing you want to do is disable the today timeout under today settings. that tends to use more ram and thus, kills the battery faster.
See i knew i wasn't crazy about the today timeout
Thanks for the confirm.
I had the same problem with I upgraded to 8.1. Battery drain was pretty bad.. Usually getting home from work, I'd still be in the 90's with moderate texting, but with 8.1 i'd be in like the 50's. I just went back to 7.9.
The problem isn't the ROM... it's the audio manager from HTC, that sucker eats battery like I've never seen... been having this issue too, until I stoped using the audio manager and started using windows media player!

Same here i (as in i didn't actually notice it) but i stopped using the audio manager in favour of WMP as it gave better reactions to using the Stereo Bluetooth headset. As in Audio manager sometimes did not pick up the next and previous commands or would stop playing.
As i said i never really paid attention and i can only speculate that the battery drained faster when i did use Audiomanager.
Just goes to show that closing apps completely is always the best practice.
BTW, dferreira.
Ai's it Funny how one month after your WM5SE release people actually reacted after my post
What is your reason to use WM5 base?
WM5 is the native OS for Wizards... so, I find it to be more quick than WM6... Never gave me problems, like WM6 did. WM6 is just a face lift on WM5 so... I'm trying to make it as good as WM6 but quicker

Pure Battery Performance

Hello, I received my Wizard about a week ago but too my annoyance and frustration, the battery had about 8 hours of life doing absolutely nothing.
I have Beam, Wifi and EDGE disconnected but the battery seems to drain just sitting there with the screen off, I've also tried killing activesync when ever I see it but it has no real effect.
I just want atleast 12 hours with it being a phone and not so much a PDA, so if anyone has any tips, regedit tweaks or ROM upgrade suggestions, please post.
My phone is running WM6.1 at the moment with the ability to flash so if ROMs exist that are just for power management, please link me in the right direction
Thank You
sounds like a defect batt
unless you move alot around and it have to use a lot of power
jumping from network to network
I also might suggest the back-light be taken to the lowest setting....i had crummy battery life as well when i received my wizard secondhand from a relative but once i lowered the back-light i was able to go days without recharging(mind you i don't use edge or wifi connections) but still...im currently running xda2 haseebs NSN WM6.1 manila 2D and its just an amazing ROM!

Battery starting to put off my HD2 love :/

Hello..I am an overall very excited HTC HD2 user but i am having huge battery problems which is why i am asking for your insights In general if phone is idle it can go as far as 35 hours straight without any charging. But when i start playing around with it, browse menus , look through settings, launch apps e.t.c the battery drains like mad..sometimes even 3% in 10 minutes..
i do not know what could be the cause of this in particular since listening to mp3, watching movies does not chalk down too much power,i can even say i was slightly happy in that area(consumption and quality wise)..
so far i have done the below..
-hard reseted
-got a brilliant new mmc (transcend 8gb class 6 FTW )
-flight mode only during nights
-bsb tweaks
-some of the tweaks mentioned in the registry tweak for battery thread (not mmc ones, read alot about data corruption risks)
-tested battery (output voltage and mah are fine and it only gets warm after 3 hours of constant ndrive use-which is normal)
-i never installed anywhere else besides phone memory(apps/games)
-virus free
-i have no data plan so 3g/hsdpa access is not a possibility(also deactivated all connections from NoData app)
-disabled all auto update app functions(weather, footprints, my location ,time e.t.c)
the only possible deal i can figure out its to blame is the radio rom..
As i said earlier i am very interested in hearing your thoughts, comments, suggestions on my issue..Thanks for hearing me out
specs
manila : 2.5.19211619
Rom : 1.66.482.1 (gr) - official

do you use msn live?
i have the SAME EXACT problem, i do NOT have any apps running, i always use cleanram, every apps always get terminated.
as soon as i TOUCH my phone, the battery drains, this battery is rediculous, i have BsB tweaks with powersaving, i dont beleive how you guys get a full day out of this crappy battery when mine doesnt last 10 hours with just texing/and web browsing. im on my third battery replacement, i conditioned my battery three times and STILL the same problem, i feel like braking this phone in half, im using my blackberry bold 9700 now which lasts me 3 days with FULL usage ALL day, my hd2 is about to see the hammer soon
try flashing it to another rom
I stepped from stock rom to artemis and I use my HD2 often but with the stock rom i didn't even came to the middle of the day but with that artemis rom i can get till next day morning without charging plus it's very stable and i almost never do a soft reset and i use this artemis rom about a month now and i didn't even do a hard reset after flashing
sorry for my english hope you understand me
My HD2 will last 2 days constant usage. This includes web surfing and emails being pulled down all day via exchange.
The battery goes down quick to about 30% and will stay around there for ages.

I hear good things about artemis as well but i am afraid i am not up to the flashing challenge..too much of a chicken to play russian rulette worth 680 euros :3 (in case i break something)
just for a test select sign in with a different account so it wipes your details amd reset, use your phone normally and dont use live see how that gets on.
I had my phone running for 2 - 3 days of medium use. as soon as i signed up for live it was lasting less that a day even if i used task manager. I then wiped my details then it was back to normal again.

With Artemis you can hardly go wrong. It does not flash your radio only the OS part, you do not have to use HSPL but SSPL which is far easier to perform. It's all explained on the Artemis thread itself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612580
regards, Kuzibri
BTW, if anything should go wrong, almost impossible with Artemis ROM's, then you can always flash back one of the original stock ROM.s from HTC itself (1.66 or 1.72)

hmmm...this is actually interesting...the artemis post seems to be fairly close to stock rom...BUT..if i backup all stuff i got now, will the usual apps (spb backup e.t.c) store everything?like e.g pc imaging apps(acronis true image , paragon drive backup) ? and if they do...and something goes wrong i can restore from pc even if hd2 becomes unbootable?
i really wish there was something simpler than me meddling with flashing :S im more into-system knowledge oriented guy :S

By the way i have 1 weird question about all those ROMs..Are they created from scratch from their makers or are they just modified/edited/tweaked versions of the original OS (ROM) that shipped with the phone?
I ordered a battery bundle with a wall charger, 2X1200mh batteries and a Mirco USB wire for $14 bucks. This is my first full smartphone so its hard for me to get used to the battery life.

yea the hd2's minimal battery life is something that i never had to deal with before also... (i've owned other smartphones but usually could last 2-3 days with moderate to heavy use...) but then again.. i never had a smartphone like the hd2 before
regardless... i'm not sure if i'd be willing to carry 2 batteries around with me... granted i could just leave it in my car until its needed.. but i guess i just consider it a extra thing to remember before i go inside my house/ an extra step to complete before i sleep... would much rather have just one 1500mh
Battery Drain
Do you guys experiencing battery drain have Co0kies Home Tab installed?
There is a known battery drain issue with CHT if .NET version 3.5.9198.0 is not installed. The battery drain will disappear when 3.5.9198.0 replaces .Net 3.5.7xxx.
Don't forget to update the registry to activate the new version and deactivate version 2 or earlier version of 3.5!
Co0kieMonster said:
Some users have had trouble with the battery drain.
I've now added this solution to the first post.
About battery drain:
There is an incompatibility with older versions of the .Net framework that can cause the battery to drain too quickly.
If you have this issue download the latest .Net version from here and install it on your device.
Even if you don't have the issue, it's always good to have the latest .Net version installed.
Big thanks to mike2nl for providing this solution, and to MichelDiamond for tracking the issue while I was away.

Problems with Battery Life and Cooked ROM's

I have been using cooked roms on my blackstone for a while now. However, my concern from the beginning has been that these are battery drainer.
I bought it second hand and it had call time of around 60 Hours both IN and OUT.
On 6.1, I used internet very little, but I used to call a lot and listen to music as well for about 2-3 hours a day. In that OS, it used to go up to 3 days.
Then I came into the world of xda-developers and things changed . The battery didn't last for more than a day and a half with the usage I mentioned above. That prompted me to buy new battery.
Since then, On cooked ROM's, I leave my email check for every 15 minutes and weather to an hour. With this usage it hardly last for 2 days on the new battery and I hardly make a call!!
If I make calls, use Opera, it would die in literally half a day.
Can people share their experiences about battery life and cooked roms etc???
I really dont want to go back to 6.1 and I want to keep using 6.5 but the battery issues are really annoying now.
I have used pretty much all the ROM's (Energy, PQD, XannyTech, KWBR, blackStonehenge) with same usage and all of them have yielded same results so it's not ROM based...
Cheers.
I'm using the last ROM that Dutty made for us. With 6 email accounts checking every 15 minutes and an Outlook push account, blue tooth enabled and sometimes an hour of phone use. My phone can't go more than 4 hours on a charge.
Thanks for the heads up. In a few hours I´m getting my own Blackstone with a stock OS. I was already set to change the ROM but with this post will have to delay it a bit until a fix can be found.
Oh, it wasn't that bad at first, it could go a full day. It's just as you add programs and then remove them things get progressively worse. I really need to flash it again to clean it up but I hate having to set everything up again. I'm not a habitual flasher

Luckily, I have found one.
All you need to do is stop using your mobile on 3G.
I have tested it on Energy ROM. With 3G switched on, it lost around 25% of charge in a day on email check for every 15 min and weather for half hour. without any calls.
With 3G switched off and the rest of settings, the charge had only gone down by 12% and that included a couple of calls.
To be honest, I dont think you really need 3G unless you are using internet a lot. Even then, you may switch it on and switch it back off.
I will be trying the new MaxSense UI as well to see whether that helps the battery or not!!

[Q] Need help figuring out how to improve battery life of my HD2!

Hey guys. sorry if theres a thread like this already. im new to this forum and searched for nearly 3 hours but didnt find much of what i was looking for.
i have a t-mobile 1024 Hd2 with a custom windows mobile ROM LEO_firestorm_v7.4.23135-FX
and a android ROM (installed to SD)
mattcfroyo 1.5
and i also have setcpu installed. the phone(and both rom's) work great. the only issue is the battery life. my phone even when i would barely use it would maybe make it about 12 hours on a charge(doing very little web browsing, turning wifi/ bluetooth off when not in use, brightness around 30%). what have you guys done to get better battery life? should i install different ROMS? is there a WM rom that is basically barebones so it takes less resources and improves battery life? i dont care what the WM side looks like as i only want to use android anyways. i want to use Android as my main OS and how should i setup setcpu? really sorry if this thread is a repeat. if there is another asking exactly what i am please give me a link. im very new to this, so guides are very appreciated aswell.
i did find the thread "HOW TO: Wipe Battery stats to improve battery life" and ill be trying that. what i mainly want to know is how to guys have your roms and setcpu setup.
links to better roms/guides etc. are very appreciated. thanks allot guys.
any rom needs to be compatible with the 1024 hd2 though.
Hi and welcome to XDA,
I've my phone set up as shown in my signature. I don't use bluetooth, basically have no calls, some texts and fairly heavy browsing (web, tapatalk pro, newsrob pro) when I'm on the train. I have a 3mA-5mA drainage in standby. My phone will last 10-12 hours on a charge, after which I have to plug it in. I'm kinda used to it now, but last week I thought I'd give UltimateJuice a try. My phone lasted a little over 17hrs, though I probably used it a bit less intensive that day. The days after I got about 14-15 hours a day with regular use.
I have JuiceDefender installed, which also manages cpu speed. Basically it allows the cpu up to 614 Mhz when the phone is sleeping and 1190 Mhz when awake. Screen brightness is set to 15% currently. When I'm at home, JuiceDefender switches WiFi on automatically, when I'm outside it connects to 3G every 15 minute during 1 minute (adjustable).
Drainage is still somewhat heavier compared to WM, but I can live with it.
Sincerely,
Mac
looks like i found a solution today. last night i underclocked my cpu to 700mhz and i have not seen any performance difference and the battery is lasting allot longer. i have been using it moderately and the battery has gone down 8% in 3 hours of use which is already allot better than before.
i checked my battery power and after it was fully charged it showed 4.2mah so i knew that wasnt the problem. does anybody have the problem that their contacts(in android) are removed if they soft reset their phone? and if so does saving contacts to sim work to fix it? thanks

No, that doesn't sound familiar. Are you syncing your contacts with your Google account?

backup everything before you do this though. it's known to cause crash at startup and you won't be able to use your android again.
im having a problem with my hd2. i made a call today. and all the incoming voice sounded like a decepticon. kinda cool but definately not useful to actually talking to a person. what should i do to fix this? is it the rom i am using?
