Actually, the title is misleading. It only struggles to get a good signal in my house (and about 20metres around it - very annoying!)
I have an unlocked Touch HD which was on Orange. After cancelling the contract, I now have an O2 Simplicity pay per month sim which gets perfect signal in my old backup phone (Nokia 5140). When I put it in my Touch HD, it gets a very weak signal and the little G/3G/H/E symbol to the left gets greyed out. I though this would mean I couldn't use the internet but still make calls but the phone won't connect or receive calls with the O2 sim.
I've called O2 to get the exact settings for the device but they say they don't support it. The device seems to set the sim up ok on insetion with the wizard program. I know the sim works cause it works in the nokia. Is the Touch HD known to struggle for signal when other phones seem to work ok? Anyone have this problem?
O2 are sending me out another sim just in case but say that I have to speak to HTC to get the right settings. I know the sim works in the phone because it works when I'm at work, travelling around Northants in a car but just doesn't work in my house. O2 did ask if I have lead in the roof which may cause problems - the house is 120yrs old so it might.
Help! anyone?
My Touch HD works fine in and around Northampton, I am sitting near Rectory Farm with a 3 bar HSDPA signal. So a few things to check.
At the bottom of Comm Manager, touch the 3G bar, are both 'Network Type' and 'Band Frequency' set to auto?
What radio version are you using?
When you get a signal is both MMS and SMS working OK?
matt_not_andrew, just like you, I have just cancelled my Orange for an 02 Simplicity pay per month! Hopefully I'll get the PAC code on Wednesday, so I'll be interested in seeing how reception is.
Any clue what it's like in Wellingborough? Haha locals on the forum tonight!
No idea on Wellingborough but works well on Orange and O2 in pretty much all of the south part of the county.
I'll check those settings later when I'm finished DIY around the house.
I've done the exactly same thing, cancelled orange contract & now on o2 simplicity and my reception is loads better than before.
I use to have dead spots in my house and they've all gone.
Running dutty's wm6.1 v4.0 rom & used the standard connection set up.

The same trouble with HD in Russia
Hi, I live far from our capital city. IN the area with weak radio signal, htc hd has 1-2 sticks.. aven worse - lost connection, at the same time Nokia and SOnyErricsson works fine 4-5 sticks. Previously my HTC ELF works aroun 3-4 sticks in the same area. I tried to check Diamond2 - the same situation as with HTC HD.....
The same in Russia.
The details: Phone from UK, Radio 1.4, ROM - BlackStone Rus 2.0, WM 6.5. Settings - Full automate regarding GPRS detection and choosing.
I switched from orange to O2 pay as you go and I found that some of the Roms (Dutty's and NRGZ's in particular) don't configure the Mobile internet settings correctly for PAYG. The O2 settings vary from the contract ones and therefore you can never get connected unless they are set up correctly.
I recommend checking the following details in settings/ connections/ manage existing connections:
Access point name: payandgo.o2.co.uk
User name: payandgo
Password: password
Its never failed on me yet - although the mobile internet service from O2 has been a little intermittent over the last couple of weeks because of network problems they have been having.
Can't fault the O2 reception on the phone, I get much, much better signal than I ever did on Orange.
I did exactly the same thing last week! ie cancelled my Orange contract and moved to O2 sim only!
When I put the O2 sim in my Touch HD, after a few minutes I got a message saying that the data settings were wrong for the network and if I wanted to download the correct settings (or something to that effect). I then had to fill in a couple options to do with the country and network. A few mins later it asked to reboot and afterwards everything just worked as if by magic! I can get on the internet and mms works etc..!
=)
In terms of reception, I've found that generally my O2 2G signal is much better than 3G.
I've given in and cancelled the O2 plan and going back to Orange - at least I know that the Touch Hd will work on their network in my house.
I phoned O2 again and again and they said they couldn't give me any settings for the Hd as they didn't know how to support it?
Anyhow, got a brand new N86 on Racoon 35 18months for £25 (reduced from £35) so even with the data bundle thats £30pm which means I save further on my broadband - result!
The Hd will be the work SATNAV phone and the N86 will be for going out (photo's) and games.
Thanks for the help.

Guys - I'm trying to get hold of an XDA2 and put it on the Orange network in the UK. The main reason for this is that you can have 2 numbers connecting to the same phone on the orange network (a.k.a. business and personal). But I also like the idea of HSCSD - i.e. 28.8K data speed - faster than any of the others.
If anyone has done this and has any comments they would like to share that I will be a happy man.
regards,
i may be way off here but i dont see what the problem should be
a gsm phone should work with any gsm operator
i bougth my xda unlocked and without a phone company licence
i put in my sim and typed in the pin
i put in the grps settings myself
and it were all set
so as far as i see any unlocked xda should work
Hi,
I'm currently using an unlocked MDA2 on orange. No problems so far, phone works, gprs works. You mention HSCSD. This is not possible with the MDA2 - it is GPRS only. Or are you talking of carrying two devices, one for GPRS and one for HSCSD ? ;-)
Cheers,
Oliver
(Oliver - ) if you are using it GPRS with Orange then you would no doubt be able to have the 2 number service they offer.
As for HSCSD, this is a faster version of GPRS - see http://support.fujitsu-siemens.de/KnowHow/GB/Grundlagen/Funknetz/GPRS/GPRS-im_Vergleich.htm
The important figure is the realistic data rate in practical usage, and HSCSD appears to be 2-3 times faster. This means your bill will go up 2-3 times faster. But that's not the point is it?
Anyways, cheers d.
Are there any phone differences? T-Mobile have a better tariff suited to myself but is one better than the other?
Hardware is the same to the best of my knowledge on Imate K-jam, MDA vario, Qtek9100 and XDA miniS. I have just got Tmobile MDA vario and I am getting to like it more the more I use it. I have not found a way to avoid greasy ear prints on the screen though, yes I do wash.
Speakerphone is usable even in the car. If you go with Tmobile on a web and walk plan 40 Mb of data sounds alot but with real internet rather than wap I don't think it will go that far. Of course your milage may vary.
Al
Really it is down to the implementation of features such as voicemail for me. With o2, you just get a text message, but with T-Mob, you get the proper voicemail icon and the ability to dial voicemail from the hotkeys. Likewise, the online billing from T-Mob is miles better than o2. Finally, you get the option by default to have sms notifications of missed calls when there is no coverage (With the option to dial the caller from the hotkeys) and have voicemail activated. With o2, it is one or the other.
In short T-Mobile just works better. (plus you get a screen protector for free, not that great but still to be commended)
thanks for the info guys. is there really an issue with wifi wardriving in that you cannot remove old hotspots you have used in the past?
all i can say i had the xda mini s with 02 for 13 days i tried in vain to get a decent signal and talk to people from my home, i took it back after 2 phones and 2 sim cards it was crap. got the t mobile and no problems at all. can talk to people without hissing and crap signal and thats how it should be. well done mda and t mobile. sorted at last.
hope this helps
XDA-mini-S for me
Had mine for 3 weeks now, got it for free on the same tarif I was on (o2 200) from the o2 Store. No problems so far except the ear prints (yes I wash too).
Happy Happy Happy......
Hey, i'm currently using WM2003 on an xda2i.
What is exceptionally frustrating is if I want to use wifi internet, I have to to to
Start-> Settings-> Connections-> connections-> advanced and change BOTH drop downs to WORK NETWORK.l If I want to use GPRS internet I have to do the same but select MY ISP in the first drop down. Switching between communication methods is extremely annoying :S
Also, if I connect to GPRS and leave it on it auto disconnects quite quickly, (10-15 mins) and then the phone needs to be reset inorder to reconnect.
My question might seems illy, but can anyone tell me if things work PROPERLY on pater versions of windows mobile and on the blackstone as I've never used anything except WM2003.
Thank you for your help, I WANT this phone.
.........Ib a n e
The problem you describe is not present on my Touch (Elf) so I'm sure it's been fixed by now. In fact, I didn't have the same problem even on my Exec (Universal) three years ago.
Fantastic! thank you for the input. I'm slowly realising how much I am putting up with in my 2i. I love it, but I need a change, and I don't really want an iPhone.
Might sell my SOUL to afford a sim free Touch HD and this was a stumbling block.
Thanks for clearing it up
I'm also just wondering whether I can justify buying SIM-free and a SIM-only contract from O2, against the cost of a phone on contract.
SIM-free for 18 months:
Phone - £500
SIM card - £20 per month (including unlimited mobile web)
Total - £860
On contract for 18 months:
Phone - £100 (guess based on Touch Pro)
Monthly cost - £35 (including unlimited mobile web)
Total - £730
There's a huge difference in cost and I'm not sure I can justify it just to get one today instead of waiting a couple of months until O2 release the Touch HD on contract (assuming they do). But I really really want this phone. (In fact, mainly I really really want to leave Orange and go back to O2, whose network actually works where I live.)
To add further info to your original question, I've set up seven email accounts in my Touch and they check for new mail periodically (some accounts every two hours, some every 30 mins). If I've turned Wi-Fi on then the connection happens through Wi-Fi but if I'm out of range or Wi-Fi is off then the phone will automatically and silently connect to GPRS and check emails that way. I never need to touch anything. Once it's connected to GPRS it stays connected for hours with no problems.
The only slight inconvenience is that to send an email the two connection methods (GPRS and Wi-Fi) have different SMTP requirements. I can't send emails through Orange's SMTP server while connected to a Wi-Fi network, and I can't send through my ISP's SMTP server (through my home Wi-Fi connection for example) when I'm connected to the internet with GPRS. But this isn't a limitation of Windows Mobile; my laptop is just the same. My solution was to set up my own SMTP server through which I can authenticate to send emails regardless of how my devices connect to the Internet.
mm... yes hadn't thought about the SMTP but I have experienced this before. It is a slight annoyance, but a necessary one I guess without setting up your own server.
I'm glad to heard of your good checking experiences with the email.
mmm.... i'm not a fan of buying contract and using contracts. I prefer to try to buy SIM FREE outright, and if possible Avail of a simplicity contract with vodafone, which only requires one month warning to leave.
The reason I choose Vodafone is because O2 block MSN messenger... and I'm unsure about skype (not that I use it a lot, but I don't like being TOLD by my network what I can and can't use.)
I have no idea about vodafone 3g hsdpa reception though, might have to look into it.
Yeh, I swap from northern ireland, to southern ireland frequently, and as I am currently looking for permanent work, I don't know exactly where I'll end up....thus, contracts are not suitable for me right now.
I did see the Touch HD in a swiss shop for about 469 sterling. think it was www.digitec.com
I've emailed them to see how much shipping would be.
I'm starting to lose the will to live at the moment as i've got a bit of an issue with using my phone on the o2 network at the moment.
I'd be really grateful, therefore, if the folks with a Touch HD on O2 could do a quick test for me to see if it is just a handset problem or an O2 issue. The full story is outlined below, but you don't have to read it and can skip straight to the test at the end if you want!
My phone worked fine for 2 weeks and hasn't worked since there was a local network outage on o2 on Thursday of last week. After this, the phone will only work when i'm in a 3G enabled area and won't work when i'm in a 2G area (a bit of a pain as i live in a 2G area).
I've been trying to track this issue down.
Here are the tests that i've done so far
An old but still active o2 account works fine in k750 (2g only phone) at home location
Sim card from old O2 account doesn't work in touch HD at home location
New sim card hasn't worked in home location (2G area) since last Thursday
New sim card seems to work elsewhere in 3G locations (although some dropped calls)
If you put phone in GSM only mode when you are in a 3G area you get a signal but can't make or receive any calls
new sim card works in k750 (2G only phone) at home location
Sim card from wife's orange phone works fine at home location (although it is an orange 3g area).
Conclusions
1) Phone is broken
2) O2 local transmitter is broken or no longer will 'speak' to the touch HD since the network outage on Thursday
However, i've come across other people on the O2 network with the same phone (see http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=15778&start=30) in another part of the country and they are having the same issue, so this has got me thinking of 1 final test before I return my phone.

The test bit starts here

If you are in a 3G area can you switch your phone band to GSM only. After doing so can you still make and receive calls/texts?
If you are in a 2G area can you make and receive calls/texts?
Really appreciate any help you can offer here guys, as this is taking over my life at the moment.
Spud
I've got an Orange Touch HD, unlocked by "Unlock Now", and being used with a 3G o2 contract sim.
Switching to GSM leaves the phone entirely operational, and is generally advised anyway to save battery from band switching in marginal signal areas.
I can't test the 2g only problem as I am swamped by 3g where I live.
I very much expect that the phone WILL work in a 2g area as it has to have the 2g fallback if 3g fails.
V
I live in a 3G area and work in a 2G area and my phone works just fine in both, albeit the slow downloads you would expect in 2G. I'm on O2 with an HD that I bought independently of the contract.
Mine works just fine in non 3G areas on O2 with a recent O2 SIM, can even go from 3G to 2G and back again mid call without any problems. Haven't tried switching 3G off (bit late to be calling anyone tonight) but don't see any reason for it to fail. Have you tried a hard reset?
Thanks guys, really appreciate your input.
I've done all the hard resets and everything and the situation remains the same, the phone will work in 3G areas but not 2G ones, so it will be returned and hopefully the replacement phone will be okay
I live in an area where i'm just on the edge of 3g reception and for the last couple of weeks or so I have been getting calls dropped whenever my phone switches from 3G. I can sometimes get a few seconds of talk time before it drops but if I switch to GSM instead of auto I can't connect at all.
I've had this HD on O2 since December, from mobiles.co.uk, and have only recently started experiencing this problem.
My replacement phone has arrived and now works as it should.
Murph1 - seems like your phone has developed the same fault as mine, so it will need to go back to HTC or get it fixed via CPW
HD TOUCH very dissapointing....any results after repair anyone?
i can tell you that i have purchased a hd touch (around a month ago) and to be honest im not impressed at all….no matter where i am i do not get full signal, i was told that this may be the lack of 3g in my area, so i took it to carphone warehouse, they changed a setting…..and i still have no signal……….i have around 20 photos and 10 songs on the memory card, and already the phone is “lagging” and glitching……….the battery life is pants, it has to be charged every night……also when starting the phone its takes at least 3-4 mins until i can touch a key and the hd touch will recognise it! really is rubbish, so much that ive returned it today for repair, hopefully it will be sorted, but i cant see how they can make the battery life longer, the software faster and the signal better???? my advice is get an iphone (the exact comment i got off of a carphone warehouse employee when i took it in for repair today) but ofcourse apparntly i cant do that as im outside of my 28 day return period….hope this helps,
joe.....oh im on o2 aswell : ( my postcode is s81 (worksop, notts area)
Same problem - PLEASE HELP!?
I have a Touch HD on O2 - through Mobiles.co.uk.
It was working fine originally for 2 weeks - then suddenly I have very low "H" reception in my house (my old phone shows loads of reception with same sim card). If it switches to E or G receptions - even if I have loads of reception, I can't sent a text or call, or receive calls. I've even sat there at work, with 4 or 5 bands on E, and then tried to call myself from my work phone - it goes straight to voicemail.
So it seems that my phone will only work on "H" band/reception. Is this the same problem? I have tried contacting HTC support and hard resets..
Please can someone help?!
Thanks!!!
Does anyone have any idea? Please!! It's doing my head in!
When I first received the phone I found it to be laggy and not very responsive.
I am currently using Dutty's Extreme 2.6 ROM and Radio 1.13.25.24 and the phone runs like a dream.
The device is very fast and responsive. The reception is very good and the GPS fixes in about 10-15 secs. The best thing is that I used the phone for 5 days without charging and it still had 20% charge left at the end (i did not use TomTom in this period).
I am in the UK and I am on the O2 network.
Hope this helps.
The 5 days test came from Dutty's Extreme 2.5 ROM not 2.6.
So how does a radio really work? I think mine is actually faulty though, as it won't connect via E or G bands. Did you have this problem before you upgraded the radio and rom?
nhudgell, your error seems the same as mine. I would be able to make/receive calls in a 3G/H area, but it would go straight to voicemail in a E/G area.
If you are within 28 days of your purchase, return it for a replacement, if not, you'll have to go to a carphonewarehouse to send it off for repair.
P.S. i updated my radio on the phone that had the error and it made no difference at all, so i assume that it was a faulty GSM module in the phone
Sounds like I need to return it then (I'm over 28 days) - so I need to go to Carphone Warehouse? Can I not go straight to HTC and use their warranty?
Another one to get unlucky
Hi all
I have a touch HD which I bought off ebay(oh dear I hear you cry !). I love the phone, but like you had the 2g 3g prob. On 2g I can make calls (if I try and try again and am patient with the long connect time )but cannot receive calls they go straight to answerphone.
I found that with a virgin sim(I had an old one that still works) the prob vanishes and phone works fine in 2g or 3g.
But with any O2 card: mine or a new sim I got(to try and fix this) and my wifes I get the same prob.
Did your phone replacement solve the prob.
I spoke to O2 and they think its a software vs phone software issue, and said that they dont sell/support that handset and I checked its not on their website.
Did the replacement phones solve the issue is all now OK??
Any feed back gratefully received !
Simon
The Story continues....
OK here is the latest.
I spoke to Spud_work & Nhudgell who had this prob and they both confirmed that
A) They had replaced the handset
B) Problem had gone and so far had not come back.
(thanks very much for the prompt response and help guys)
So I called HTC and told them this - I found someone that was interested.
He said that he will look into what the repair people say and then I can update on here.
Just keeping fingers crossed that they CAN fox this as they did for others !
Final Update
Spoke to HTC and they agreed to fix. This required me explaining about the postings on here and what other people had done. I sent the phone back and it was back with me within one week the prob was fixed. I believe that they changed the main-board. They said that they had never heard of this prob, but I pointed them here !
Anyway if anyone else gets this same prob - send the phone back ! That worked for me !
Having said all that I now have a new and even more unusual prob - with the back light - looks like the phone might be going "home" again !
Hi,
Got my HD2 couple weeks ago, sim free. Now trying to go through the networks to see which has best connection for my area. Started with 3, now just brought a o2 payg sim with web bolt on. But when I try to go online it tells me cannot connect. This is my first wm phone, blowing hot and cold at the mo, sometimes so fustrating but at times blows me away with the way it can be tweaked.
Thanks for any help
damn you O2
Same here guys..any experience on this?
I've got a monthly O2 contract, and I've not had any problems, so I doubt it's a network issue. It would be worth getting in touch with them to be sure, but check the following...
Go to the settings tab and do Menu, All Settings, Connections, Connections, Set up my proxy server, and check that "this network uses a proxy blah blah.." is unticked.
If it is, give O2 a call and tell them you're having problems.
A few years I was on O2 Pay & Go, and the internet access I could get through that was very limited - just WAP and i-mode rubbish...
You need a data bolt on (if there is one)
O2 contract works fine in a ppc..PAYG don't get data. Data and web are 2 different things sadly, one of the reasons I left O2
PLz c this, help urself~
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5004177
Thanks for that. Working now, going add web bolt on now.
