Omnia II I8000 3G Question - Omnia II General

I know xda-developers is not for Samsung devices, but the experts and information here is unmatched on the internet......
I am looking at the Omnia II as I want a WinMo device that has 8GB or more of internal memory, my question is this.
The Omnia II has the following bands (from omnia.samsungmobile.com on the specs page)
EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS 900/1900/2100
I am currently on T-Mobile and would like to know if this phone would allow me to use T-Mo's 3G network, I have read that T-Mo uses 1900 and 2100 but everything I read says something about US2100 and ##1900 and that it's not the same as most phones are designed.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Also if someone knows of another phone with 8GB or more internal memory that is better than the Omnia II that would be great also (phone has to be 6.5 ready and I know I can just get any phone with a MicroSD slot, but it would be nice to have 8GB plus a 16GB micro card.

I too am investigating this as I am interested in the 1900 band for AT&T. All of the answers that I have found so far have been about as clear as mud! LOL
I will post back if I find any solid answer to this, but I believe that the T-mo 2100 band is somewhat different than the European 2100 band is. I am not sure about the 1900 band tho.
Later.........

Yes it works!

I'm using the Samsung GT-i8000 on US ATT (UMTS 1900) and am getting my usual 3G speeds. I'm coming off the ATT Fuze/HTC Touch Pro (which has UMTS 850/1900) for the past year so I know where the non-3G areas are in and around Chicago. So far, I haven't noticed any difference in coverage areas, 3G availability/unavailability or call quality (indoors and outdoors).
It's a great phone but I do wish it came with 6.5 on it...

T-Mobile supports 1700/2100 3G bands.

3G 0n AT&T w/ Omnia II i8000
I just recently got an i8000 Omnia but have not been able to get 3G reception. The best I am able to do is get Edge (2G). I am located in the Mpls-St.Paul MN area and have moved to the i8000 from a Samsung Eternity which always got 3G reception. Is there something that I a not doing correctly or a phone setting that I need to change? A reply would be appreceiated from anyone having success...Thanks!

Yes,
Unless you have good 1900 Mhz coverage you will not get 3G data from your phone. Only the Bell Canada version has UTMS 850/1900 data bands (3G+), Other Omnia 2 versions will not get any 3g data speeds unless there is good 1900 coverage. Unfortunately ATT is beefing up 850 band rather than the 1900 band as better penetration etc. I have even read in various releases that ATT is planning to abandon 1900 in favor of 850 in the next year or so.
Thanks to XDA developers for the OMnia 2 coverage !!!!

will athena work on u.s. t mobile 3g network?

anybody in new york or been to new york with your athena to see if it works with the new upcomming t mobile 3g network? they say its running on 1700 freq.
anybody have luck or an answer for this one?

that would be a no then, 2100Mhz is what the athena is capable of AFAIK
I have used the Athena on both T-Mobile and AT&T Networks in the US without issues.
I also have had no problems with T-mo in my area (central NJ) using 3g. I'm using an x7501...TJ

that seems odd, Current roms do not have the T-Mobile US band included, nor is the current radio capable of running the t-mobile 1700 band in the USA. ATT band is 3g/UTMS 850/1900 and Europe is 3g/UTMS 800/2100
T-Mobile Edge would work fine though
Hi, sometimes the 3g pop's up on my x7501 its not all the time but next time it does I will take a screen shot of it. Maybe its an error I have no idea...TJ
some roms incorrectly show that instead of edge !
Ok thanks...TJ
So is it possible to get T-mo 3g on athena?
T-mo finally rooled out 3g in my area, I thought my athena was 3g capable and could fly through the internet and never deal with slate Flinstone tablets and EDGE again! Sadly we do?
Their 3g is rolled out on 1700/2100 band only, so to exit the EDGE stone age, we must buy the G1 (not even close to x7501) or ask a crazy question to those in the know. Is the frequency band offered on a phone limited and fixed by the ROM / hardware, or is it software driven where a patch / upgrade could expand it's operantional band to include 1700/2100 UMTS alongside the voice 850/1900 band?
I can connect easily to TMobile. I get the "E" sign showing on the antennae.

It is hardware driven. Unfortunately this is why I'm going to switch over to AT & T because of the downgrade to get 3g service from a phone that NO OTHER Networks in the world uses is pointless IMHO. I don't know what T Mo was drinking or smoking, and when I asked the level 1 techs they said no future talks or expectations of using the NORMAL 1900/2100 Frequency like other 3g networks. Sux if you ask me.
Thanks for the note on hardware capability
I got similar responses from the techs at T-mo except I also got a moment of false hope when one incorrectly told me that their 3g is on 1900, I went nuts trying, then called back & someone else told me that it was in fact on 1700/2100. As I've been reading, their reason (though a huge pain in the ass for us) was to separate voice and data so one wouldn't steal bandwith from the other. Makes sense, though it would be easier to deal with if I had some REAL options other than G1 and crappy kids phones.
Since T-Mo has the best price for some pretty decent service (except EDGE that is), I've heard of some T-Mo users getting just an AT&T data plan alongside T-Mo voice, I'm not sure how it's done, do you need 1/2 simms, or what. If you find yourself doing this, I would like to hear your feedback.
Otherwise, I'll keep my fingers crossed that HTC will use some common sense, and use 1700/2100 in future US versions.

HTC Magic (Vodafone UK) - Trying to get 3g in the states?

I have just taken a job in the states and brought my phone with me. I was expecting to be able to get 3g when I insert an AT&T or T-Mobile sim card. Unfortauntely the best that the phone seems to be able to get is Edge.
After doing a bit of research it seems that in the US they are using differnt frequencies.
Does anyone know of a fix which would allow my phone to get 3g in the states?

T-Mobile are, I think, UMTS 900 / 2100 (perhaps like Vodafone in the UK and elsewhere, which is why we can all use T-Mobile-based rooted HTC ROMs in our phones).
AT&T is UMTS 850 and 1900.
At the moment no phone on earth can do both UMTS 850 *and* UMTS 900. These frequencies are used to provide longer range coverage in low-density service areas - in other words, most city-edge and countryside places.
UMTS 1900, 2100 and other higher numbered frequencies are used in higher-density areas to provide more calling / data capacity, but with the downside of more limited range.
It seems (googling) that AT&T do 850/1900 and T-Mobile do 1700 (as of May '08 sez Wikipedia), though the T-Mobile MyTouch3G does 1700 and 2100....so maybe T-Mobile now do 2100 as well (at least in some places). There doesn't appear to be much, if any overlap on 3G frequencies between carriers and users must be EDGE only on the telco that doesn't match their phone. Everyone does EDGE.
In New Zealand, where I am, one carrier does 850 and the other 900...but they both support 2100....and a 3rd carrier will soon be offering 2100 later this year.....so you do get *some* 3G on just one phone in built up areas where telcos need more capacity and use 2100....but you get nothing in the countryside and have to used EDGE/GPRS.
There are about 7 UMTS frequency bands all up (Wikipedia).....so any single device is going to be seriously challenged to support all those well.....and what telco would want their phones to do that anyway? Frequency incompatibilities prevent their customers from leaving.......which explains why there aren't any phones that do all 7.

If Vodafone (UK) & T-Mobile (US) are using the same UMTS frequencies, does this mean that I should be able to get 3g in the states? I am currently using a T-mobile (US) sim card but the phone is only getting an Edge connection. Maybe I need a ROM update??

I checked on the t-mobile site and Tampa, FL appears to be all purple.
Have you checked your settings?
Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Make sure 2G only is "Un-ticked"
If it doesn't work, maybe you would like to consider selling your one on ebay and buying a Magic {or other handset} from the US

Galaxy s 9000 with tmobile 3g usa?

Anyone here have the galaxy s 9000 euro version working with tmobile 3 g in usa?
I'm also interested in that. I'm about to buy a galaxy here in EU but I'm moving to california soon. There should be no issues however since the galaxy is a quad band phone
I looked into importing a HTC Desire from Tmo UK for use here on Tmo's US network -
Tmo europe uses 2100 band for 3g, Tmo US uses the AWS IV band (1700/2100) for 3G - i did a little more research and found that 2100 was the download side and 1700 for upload - and as Tmo here in the US told me my Tmo MyTouch 3G would work fine in europe, i figured i'd be good to go - maybe only have 3G speeds on the download side
got hold of a 2nd level tech at Tmo and he 'xplained it down't work that way - if the Tmo US network doesn't see both freqs (1700 & 2100) it will switch me to 2G data speeds
so answer is, it'll work for phone calls, but data speeds will be limited to 2G

I can confirm, I did a lot of digging myself and found the same thing. I'm from the UK but living in the US for a year or so. I was going to get a Galaxy S from ebay but realised they didn't have the 1700 freq so wouldn't get 3g with T-mobile over here ion the US.
My Iphone 3g from the UK only gets edge data transfer speeds here in the US as it too is missing the important 1700 freq...

Finally figured this out too after posting questions in different places. Found this article which had a very detail explaination.

One thing I'm wondering is if it is possible to flash the android radio version from a Vibrant on to an international Galaxy S to enable Tmobile AWS?
that question is best answered by someone far more knowledgeable than i am in software and android OS
i want 3g
I just recently bought the unlocked galaxy s to use for when I study abroad in Germany in the coming months. However, I am experiencing the very issue raised in this thread and have been searching high and low to find a solution to change the radio frequency to include both 1700 and 2100. Hopefully, flashing the firmware from the vibrant to the unlocked galaxy s will work, but I'm not experienced enough to even know where to start.

[Q] If unlocked, will it have AT&T 3G?

From what I understand, AT&T uses the 850/1900 GSM bands, which the Omnia 7 supports. I've heard conflicting reports on whether or not an unlocked Omnia 7 will work on the AT&T 3G network though.
I'm a little new to this smartphone business, so was hoping someone with a greater understanding could confirm whether or not it would be compatible. Thanks guys!
Yes
If you're in an area with the 1900mhz band, you'll have 3G.
At&t 3G in USA
Hi, i hope omnia 7 works with USA att network...if you remember guys ..when samsung vibrant and samsung captivate got unlocked they both can work on att and tmobile 3g network... when they unlocked they found both networks 3g frequency.... so, lets hope with this omnia 7 have both 3g frequency..
PLEASE SOMEONE CONFORM THIS... if yes then that will be great for us...
The Samsung Website lists the following frequenzies:
900 / 1.900 / 2.100 MHz
So if you're in an area where AT&T only uses 850 Mhz UMTS the phone will drop to 2G.
I have an unlocked Omnia 7 on AT&T here in Seattle. It originally was locked to T-Mobile UK.
I believe I am primarily in a 3G 850 area (with smattering of 1900.)
I have had great 3G connectivity on the Omnia 7. In fact, the notification bar often says 3G+ (which I assume is HSDPA.)
Here is an interesting thing. I also have a Samsung Focus, also on AT&T.
The Omnia 7 gets markedly faster download times than the Focus. Like 25% faster. If I launch two data-centric apps side-by-side, the Omnia 7 always loads faster.
It could be that the lack of 850 is causing my phone to hit 1900 instead of 850 and it is somehow faster?
Or maybe the docs are wrong and the phone can do 3G on 850.
But the speed difference is palpable and I have had 3G or 3G+ everywhere I've gone in Seattle.

Funny thing, that's where I would end up using it. How much did it cost to get from T-mobile UK / how did you do it, if you don't mind me asking?
There's a thread on Modaco; I paid around 19EUR and got an unlock code in less than a day.

Does this means that Omnia7 have tri-band 3G: 900/1900/2100 by default and "1900" was lock away by the Euro carriers? The network unlock code also unlock 1900 band as well?
By any chance does anyone in the Boston area have an Omnia 7?
Sorry for the newb question, but I can't seem to get a straightforward answer - does that mean an unlocked Omnia 7 can get 3G on TMobile USA? I'm in the Chicago area, and ATT is not an option for me.

if your carrier uses the 900 1900 or 2100 frequency....yes, if not no....
cannot be more straight forward than that...

[Q] Anyone else seeing this?

Multiple times ive looked up this phone in the past. Multiple times my dreams have been shut down because the frequency bands arent the same as Telus Canada. Multiple times have people told me, no, its impossible, wont happen. Then how come both the Windows Phone 7 and the dell venue pro site both have 1900/850 MHz EDGE? i realise EDGE isnt the fastest bug around but its much faster than GSM and its still is by definition 3G. and i was led under the impression that only GSM would work.
So what im wondering is that, ive heard that a new model for US is coming out in January, would the GSM/EDGE frequency be the same, just with 850/1900 UMTS difference?
And basically all i would be waiting for is a bamp from 3G to 3G+?
Telus 3G+
Telus in Nova Scotia HSPA+ network runs on 1900/850 (PCS/CLR). Its probably the same frequencies across the country.
I'm a new user, so I can't post links yet... however if you look at the telus mobility page and go to the Coverage tab, it'll tell you that they use 1900/850 for their 3G+
the wikipedia article on UMTS frequency bands also says telus uses 1900 and 850.
HSPA+ is part of the UMTS family. The Venue Pro lists UMTS 1900 and 850 as bands it can get... I'm assuming that means it can handle HSPA+
I'm just making assumptions, but it seems like the Venue Pro will run the HSPA+ network on Telus/Bell in Canada.
I sure hope it can, because I want a venue pro on telus myself!
Dont make a mistake, EDGE is NOT 3G and the frequencies the DVP uses for 3G, 900/1700/2100 will not give you 3G on the 850/1900 frequencies, that is for EDGE only.

That is correct.
Only 3 providers in Canada will enable you to get 3G with the Dell Venue Pro.
Those providers are Wind Mobile, Videotron and Mobilicity.
The phone supports AWS 1700, not UMTS 850 or 1900.

Ah! you're right. I looked at the phone specs again, and it listed GSM 1900, not UMTS 1900
well... that put a serious damper on my fun ... I really wanted one, but not if it can only do 2G around where I live.
Now to see what bands the omnia7 supports... I hope I don't have to settle for one of the ****ty phones released in canada. Seriously, we got all the worst ones.
Iv been waiting on the dell venue pro seeing to it was the only Decent phone that would work here Where i live at&t Alaska. now im screwed. Best phone I believe i can own as of right now is LG EXPO its nice btw . I know u can get that in Canada
