I bought an XDA EXEC on Ebay as 'spare or repair' which had a damaged screen which I replaced with my M5000 screen.
I unlocked it with Buzz's unlocker which worked fine. I tried my Vodafone sim which had no service so I then tried an O2 sim which had the same problem no service.
I have tried countless Radio ROMs and still the same.
I am now using Tomal's - v8.2: WM6.1 Pro
Rom version D.08.20 TML WWE
Radio version 1.09
Protocol version 42.42.P8
I have also rolled back to the original O2 XDA EXEC ROM but have the same issue with no service.
Could this be an antenna issue? or is it just dead?
Any help would be great. Thanks.
When I soft reset my uni next to my daughters baby monitor I can hear the uni searching for a signal through the baby monitor and then I get the no service again. Not sure if this would help any of you identify my problem?
Could be antenna. Blacklisted, perhaps?
do you have active service on the sims that you are putting in?

I phoned O2 last week to see if it was blocked? But the bloke I spoke to wasn't interested and basically told me my uni is dead without checking to see if it was blocked, I might attempt to ring again later?
How could I find out if the antenna is not working?
Is there a link on this site that has a picture of the inside of uni so I know what I am looking for if I was to change the antenna?
Thanks for your reply.

I have tried 3 sims which all work in other phones just not this one. Even though I have no signal I still get the 'G' next to the antenna icon.

When you open your Uni, the antenna is a large white plastic part attached to the mainboard by 3 screws and housing your camera lens and flash.
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/ind...1306605&imageID=29054213#a=1306605&i=29054213
On the pic you can see the Uni on the left with large white antenna visible. Make sure it connects to the mainboard underneath, there should be metallic prongs that should be touching the contacts on the board. When re-assembling, make sure the copper foil is attached the way it was, don't forget the flash connector position, if you reverse it, the flash will not work.

There is a website (I don't remember the URL now) where you can feed your IMEI number and it says if the phone was blacklisted. Google for it.
Edit: The website now does it for a fee (£1.99) but I've found this link that could be useful for IMEI check: http://forum.whatmobile.net/showthread.php?t=38259

I used a site a week ago that checks your IMEI for free which came back with UNBLOCKED but as a read somewhere on this site that someone tried the same site which said theres was UNBLOCKED when it was actually blocked.
So I'm not to sure about that site anymore???
I have replaced the antenna which made no change? But did find that my old uni dident work due to screw on antenna snapped off which is a bit annoying!!
Still need to phone O2 but its Sunday so that will be tomorrow now!
Ok I have phoned O2 for them to tell me the uni is blacklisted as far back as two years ago and can never be used again so its as good as dead? unless theres away of replacing a part inside with my old M5000 which will bring it back to life???
If this can be sorted then I will be a happy man again!!!
For your Uni to work, it needs a new mainboard. It is unclear from your previous post whether your M5000 works now, but if it doesn't, I say replacing the mainboard will not do a single bit of difference.

Thats a shame! My M5000 wouldn't switch back on after a ROM install failed which I took battery out thinking Sim was still in uni which it wasn't and never switched back on afterwards and PC would not recognise device.

hi folks,
i ve got a mda vario aka wizard. i am looking at using 2 sim cards in it. i believe the options are either to cut the sims and use an adapter. i am not very confident with cutting as i have messed it once.
the other option is the no cut dual sim adapter which does not need cutting. the link for it is below
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5831841323&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1
has anyone got any experience using this in a wizard. please let me know.
HELP MUCH APPRECIATED
CHEERS
Cutting the SIMs is a dangerous business. I tried a cut adapter in my Magician once, did not work. The adapter was too slim and the sims did not get well enough connected to the Magicians SIM slot. Adding a bit of paper did not help as well, only stressed the battery cover of the Magician too much. Luckily two plastic cards are delivered with the cut adapter models that you can stick your cut out sim chips in, but they are too thin as well, so bits of paper have to be added to get proper contact with the sim slot. After a while the pressure compresses the paper too much, so more paper is needed etc etc. And that is without taking in consideration the risk of destroying your sims by cutting them too enthousiastically.
Those sim adapters in the link you provided are a much better choice, no cutting needed etc, BUT they will not work in a Magician. they will not fit between the battery and the cover. I have not tried them in the Wizard, but since the battery is very tightly inserted in the Wizard even tighter then in the Magician, my bet is it will not fit in the Wizard either.
The good news is that brando (http://mobile.brando.com.hk/) recently released a twin sim adapter like you are looking for that will work in the magician, according to this thread in the Magician forum : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33658. You can try to email them and ask them if it will fit in the Wizard, i have been looking for one as well. Let's both email them and ask them if it wil work. I'll post their answer here. Good luck!
h there
thanks for that.ive anyway ordered the twin sim mentioned. will let u know when it arrives on its compatibility. was only risking 5 pounds!!

hi, I am curious if it will fit and work in your Vario, I will wait patiently for your experiences! Good Luck!

I'd be intrested in hearing how you got one as well.
Terran
at a guess i would say it will fit, at the moment i have another sim ontop of my sim in my wizard, all i did was fold the flap thats use to pull that battery out to the other side and now keep my other sim ontop of the one i'm using, it fits fine and the battery cover fits on as normal. i'm planning on getting the twin sim too
that's good news! At least we now know it fits, all we have to get confirmed now is that the SimSwitching software works...
Hi rags_999,
You say you ordered the twin sim for £5 - yet the one in the link is like $27 - can you post a link to which one you ordered
Thanks
Scott
Hmmm, just got this email from Brando. Not very good news...:
"Dear Jeroen Kok,
I am sorry that we haven't tested it on HTC Wizard. Also we have experience that this product may not work properly on Pocket PC.

hi scott,

Well i got my twin sim today and couldnt get it to work. it would pickup the orange sim i had as sim2 but not the one that was stuck onto the thing as sim1. I think it was more of a connection problem than anything else. I only got to play with it for about half hour as i had work to do so i will have another play and see if i can get it going. It does make the battery cover stick up a bit but i wasnt really concentraiting on getting it to fit flush, i just wanted to get it initially working first. The sim switching software shows up under the program list but as i could only get it working with one sim i couldnt test how it worked.
I'll have another play tomorrow or something and if i get it working i'll let you know. i'm really hoping i can as it would be very handy to be able to swap between my person and work number without swapping sims.
Dean
That's a shame Deanj, let us know what happens,l also when you don't get it to work. BTW, what adapter did you try, so we can learn from you which one to buy (or not)?
i actually own a magician and i've always orderred from Brando. so far all the product i orderred worked as adverticed/it should. i recently orderred from them a no sim cutting, 10th era dual sim card adapter. i started a thread in the magician forum discussing this product product. http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33658
hi folks,
 just to let you know that the twin sim adapter fits and works. switching is fine. recognises both sims. able to use new menu to swap between cards. though there is a small bulge of the back cover. you can get around this.
anyway wil write a step by step guide soon. its simple.!!
Rags_999
Great!
I am interested. Will your step-by-guide be posted on? here? and When?
Thanks
i shall try and do it this evening
Hi,
How big a bulge on the rear casing - anything I should be worried about long term?

Hi, which is your device? thanks
Hi, I am having trouble with my Jasjar and it is really affecting me! The problem is that when I am talking over the phone the person on the other side complains that they can't listen to all the things I say, they loose about 1 of 15 words I speak. I have tried using this on many coverage areas, different hours, with Bluetooth and WiFi turned off, etc... I am have installed and tested on my device the shipped ROM and the ROM version 1.13.53 with Radio 1.03.01 Ext ROM version 1.13.137. (I can't try any other ROM because they will cancel my warranty if I do so) I took it to a Support Center of my Mobile Phone Service Provider (Telcel in Mexico) and they tried with other SIM cards (other phone lines and 3.0, 3.5 Volts version) that didn't helped, they told me to use it in the Band PCS1900 and that also didn't fixed it.
So I want to know if my Jasjar is deffective or if this is a well known issue that will be fixed in the next Jasjar ROM Upgrade or that Microsoft will fix for the Windows Mobile 2005 AKU2, or if this issue will never be fixed for this device. Or of my device is faulty?
It has done this since I bought it from Expansys.
Any ideas???
Thanks in advance!

Microphone AGC
Try enabling the Microphone AGC in the Settings > System menu. It May help. If it is already enable then try disabling it and see if it make any difference.
Thank you, yes I already tried this Enabled and Dissabled, it also didn't helped :?
Anyway I think this setting only affects when you are Recording a note or something.
Rodrigo Gonzalez
the mic of the universal is to the left of the instrument. try and flip the instrument so you can talk into the mic. Just ensure you keep track where the mic is when speaking, i think that should slove the problem.
Yes, thank you zillocx I tried that the first 2 days when people started complaining that they were loosing some of the words I speak, I thought I needed more time to get used to the Jasjar, but after 2 weeks I have convinced myself that this is some kind of bug or something?
I have already tried using a Bluetooth headset (Nokia HS-11W) and is the same thing. I think they listen to me clearly when I am not using it since my Mobile Phone Provider changed my SIM card for a 3 Volts version.
This is weird and I don't want to return this unit because I have always encouraged people to get devices like the Jasjar instead of their normal phones and a PDA, but now they are proving me wrong!
SOLVED!
Hi, after many months and sending my Jasjar back to warranty without success of getting my problem solved...
I finally have 2 solutions for it:
1) With a Tested and Approved ROM from i-mate-> Rom version: 1.13.53
Radio version: 1.03.01 and ExtROM version: 1.13.137
I managed to solve this problem if I change my carrier, here in Mexico 2 companies offer GSM (Telcel and Movistar) if I connect to Movistar the problem dissapears, but they have few antennas.
2) With the new i-mate Test ROM version: 1.30.68 WWE
Radio: 1.09.00 and ExtROM: 1.30.153 WWE
The problem is solved without changing to another carrier! But! If I install Microsoft’s .net Compact Framework 2.0 the problem returns.
Any ideas what is going on here?
Is anybody is reading this?
Hi, well let me update you and tell you what I have found. I changed from Carrier and everything is working fine now, but yesterday I decided to open my Jasjar to see if there is any chance of improving the original antenna, I opened my device with the HTC Service Manual (There is a copy on the FTP). To my surprise I discovered that the Universal has 3 atennas for the GSM/UMTS Service (I don't know what is the purpose of each one), and my Jasjar is missing one of them!!!! And a conductive tape (are they really important???)
I couldn't believe it because my Jasjar was returned to warranty at Dubai, they changed the motherboard but they didn't realized that it was missing one antenna! Are they blind????? Maybe they are opening devices very cool with their sunglasses on 8) !!!!!!!
So I decided to make an antenna for it with the antenna of a Motorola phone I used, and my Jasjar worked perfectly with my past carrier (I haven't been able to cancel the contract so I am paying 2 contracts thanks to i-mate  )
So my question is do anyone of you knows the purpose of each antenna?
What should I do, should I contact i-mate and tell them they are blind and that I will sew them because of all I have been through?
Thank you very much and I hope this time you will help me guys!
Here are the pictures:
Not sure why there are 3 antenea but I can gaurentee that they will declare warranty void as soon as you say you've been poking around with it. Is it not possible to make an aeriel? By the way the conductive tape justs looks like a screening shield which could be replicated with some aluminium foil.
3 Antenna maybe because,...
Bluetooth,
WiFi,
GSM??

Ithing the missing one is GSM antena ... because wifi antena is locator on the side of your device
GSM Antenna
Yes you are right guys, it is definitely a GSM Antenna, I think it handles the outgoing data on a call (my voice), but only on some types of networks, because with my current operator (Movistar) it doesn't matter the missing antenna, the other person can hear me crystal clear, but no on the Telcel network. I think Telcel network is older, maybe I-mate just "deprecated" this part of the antenna, haha.
I know that I shouldn't have opened my device, but I knew something was interfering my GSM antenna, I thought maybe the wifi and the gsm antenna were very close on my Jasjar and that's why I was having this problems.
I will try to contact I-mate and ask them for the antenna, I hope they at least apologize, because had a lot of problems because of this little piece of metal!!!
I will keep you updated...

DUDE!!! YOU ARE THE MAN!! People have been complaining about me not receiving calls, so I finally started to investigate and after a long search stumbled across this post!! I opened mine up and bingo, I am missing this antenna as well.
I'm going to try to fabricate a replacement and see if things go better. Someone ought to pin this post or put it somewhere obvious as this is a big find!!
Thanks again dude!
UPDATE:
OK... I've been trying to fabricate a new antenna using some sheet aluminum, but it is too flimsy to keep the contact. Also bloody hard to cut to the right size (took me four attempts) and finally succeeded size-wise after measuring with a micrometer.
Can anyone please suggest an alternative? Is there a place to get a replacement antenna with all 3 in place?
New Antenna, no help...
I managed to make a more sturdy antenna using pop can metal. I ensured that the contacts were actually conductive and placed it in. However, I don't see a noticeable improvement in signal strength.
May I suggest that the 3 antenna's are for EGSM (900), DCS1800 and PCS1900? Presumably, that would also explain the different sizes in the plates...I'd say the largest one is 900, the second largest is 1800 and the smallest is 1900.
The GSM mode sets EGSM and DCS1800 which are the modes I used. The second largest antenna is the one that appears to be missing. I'm going to try service on PCS1900, but I don't think my carrier uses it.
Still looking for an OEM antenna if anyone can direct me there.
The display just suddenly failed. The backlight comes on but the display just shows bands of varying thickness across the screen. The image below is my best attempt to photograph the problem.
I can still access the device via mobile sync and can see all files and folders in Ram and SD card via USB connection on my laptop. The phone still works in that I can receive calls but no display obviously. The screen itself is undamaged physically and the device has not suffered any damage. I am unsure where to start looking - at the mother board end or the screen end for bad connection for instance.
The phone would be still under warranty from Orange but I've installed the buzzdev HTC Universal SIM Unlock so I guess they would not be helpful!
Any suggestions anyone?

Hello, I have a T-Mobile MDA Compact II with WM5 which worked fine for quite some time. A few days back the device suddenly switched off during navigation (don't think it was the battery) and after switching it on again it told me that the sim card is not inserted or invalid.
Help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & cu

Try pressing the sim card a little. Maybe put something between the sim card and the battery. See if it helps.
hello vlodeck,
thanks for the suggestion.... I've tried it but with no luck. I'm still getting 'sim card is missing' when tuning on the phone :-(

Since the case of the broken one was like brand new i baught another mda compact II from ebay and changed the main boards over, now it works perfectly (cross fingers, touch wood), the shop told me that it was complicated to take the main board out and change it, so here is me, a laptop and pc tech, i took it apart and had it back together within 15 mins and iv never touched a pda before, so quite happy with myself anyway i hope this mainboard doesnt break like the other, thanks.
Hi
I have just bought a diamond 2.
I have put my SIM card in and when I switch the phone on it comes up saying the SIM is missing. I have tried cleaning the SIM and re-inserting and even padding out with some paper. Unfortunately none of this has worked and the phone remains just as useless to me.
Apparently it is SIM-locked to O2, I am using a working O2 SIM. Does this mean that it might be SIM-locked to someother network or is it a hardware fault or could it be something else?
I have tried plenty of searching but that has yielded nothing so far.
Thanks for any answers
Jim
Hi
Have you bought this second hand? Perhaps it is locked for contract use and you are using Pay As You Go? It might also have been reported stolen and deactivated.
Do you know the SIM works, have you tried it in another phone?
Options are, try another O2 SIM, if that doesn't work contact O2 and ask them to check it, they might be able to tell you why the phone isn't accepted on their network. Alternatively contact the seller maybe?
If it is new of course take it back to the O2 shop and get them to check it, it could well be faulty.
Regards
Phil
Thanks for your response Phil
I have tried 2 different working O2 SIM's in the phone and they both don't work.
I'm thinking that because its saying SIM is missing it is not seeing the SIM as opposed to it being SIM-locked.
I have contacted the seller and he insists that it worked fine on O2.
I am really dissapointed as I was really looking forward to using this phone
I had exactly the same when I first powered up my TD2 - and I know my SIM worked.....
I found that I cleaned the sim by running on my t-shirt (obvious) - and then reinserted - with the same problem....
Then I pushed the card hard in both lateral and vertical directions - push the end of the sim towards the edge of the phone and then push down on the sim - it didnt even look like it moved to me - but when I put the battery back in - presto it worked.....
I'll give that a try, thanks
no joy with that.
Thankfully the seller has offered me a refund, just need to buy another one sharpish
