hi folks,
i ve got a mda vario aka wizard. i am looking at using 2 sim cards in it. i believe the options are either to cut the sims and use an adapter. i am not very confident with cutting as i have messed it once.
the other option is the no cut dual sim adapter which does not need cutting. the link for it is below
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5831841323&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1
has anyone got any experience using this in a wizard. please let me know.

Cutting the SIMs is a dangerous business. I tried a cut adapter in my Magician once, did not work. The adapter was too slim and the sims did not get well enough connected to the Magicians SIM slot. Adding a bit of paper did not help as well, only stressed the battery cover of the Magician too much. Luckily two plastic cards are delivered with the cut adapter models that you can stick your cut out sim chips in, but they are too thin as well, so bits of paper have to be added to get proper contact with the sim slot. After a while the pressure compresses the paper too much, so more paper is needed etc etc. And that is without taking in consideration the risk of destroying your sims by cutting them too enthousiastically.
Those sim adapters in the link you provided are a much better choice, no cutting needed etc, BUT they will not work in a Magician. they will not fit between the battery and the cover. I have not tried them in the Wizard, but since the battery is very tightly inserted in the Wizard even tighter then in the Magician, my bet is it will not fit in the Wizard either.
The good news is that brando (http://mobile.brando.com.hk/) recently released a twin sim adapter like you are looking for that will work in the magician, according to this thread in the Magician forum : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33658. You can try to email them and ask them if it will fit in the Wizard, i have been looking for one as well. Let's both email them and ask them if it wil work. I'll post their answer here. Good luck!
h there
thanks for that.ive anyway ordered the twin sim mentioned. will let u know when it arrives on its compatibility. was only risking 5 pounds!!

hi, I am curious if it will fit and work in your Vario, I will wait patiently for your experiences! Good Luck!

I'd be intrested in hearing how you got one as well.
Terran
at a guess i would say it will fit, at the moment i have another sim ontop of my sim in my wizard, all i did was fold the flap thats use to pull that battery out to the other side and now keep my other sim ontop of the one i'm using, it fits fine and the battery cover fits on as normal. i'm planning on getting the twin sim too
that's good news! At least we now know it fits, all we have to get confirmed now is that the SimSwitching software works...
Hi rags_999,
You say you ordered the twin sim for £5 - yet the one in the link is like $27 - can you post a link to which one you ordered
Thanks
Scott
Hmmm, just got this email from Brando. Not very good news...:
"Dear Jeroen Kok,
I am sorry that we haven't tested it on HTC Wizard. Also we have experience that this product may not work properly on Pocket PC.

Well i got my twin sim today and couldnt get it to work. it would pickup the orange sim i had as sim2 but not the one that was stuck onto the thing as sim1. I think it was more of a connection problem than anything else. I only got to play with it for about half hour as i had work to do so i will have another play and see if i can get it going. It does make the battery cover stick up a bit but i wasnt really concentraiting on getting it to fit flush, i just wanted to get it initially working first. The sim switching software shows up under the program list but as i could only get it working with one sim i couldnt test how it worked.
I'll have another play tomorrow or something and if i get it working i'll let you know. i'm really hoping i can as it would be very handy to be able to swap between my person and work number without swapping sims.
Dean
That's a shame Deanj, let us know what happens,l also when you don't get it to work. BTW, what adapter did you try, so we can learn from you which one to buy (or not)?
i actually own a magician and i've always orderred from Brando. so far all the product i orderred worked as adverticed/it should. i recently orderred from them a no sim cutting, 10th era dual sim card adapter. i started a thread in the magician forum discussing this product product. http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33658
hi folks,
 just to let you know that the twin sim adapter fits and works. switching is fine. recognises both sims. able to use new menu to swap between cards. though there is a small bulge of the back cover. you can get around this.
anyway wil write a step by step guide soon. its simple.!!
Rags_999
Great!
I am interested. Will your step-by-guide be posted on? here? and When?
Thanks
i shall try and do it this evening
Hi,
How big a bulge on the rear casing - anything I should be worried about long term?
Scott
hi scott,
i dont think the bulge is worrying. but there is a way around it. i am yet to try it. will let you know later today
Hi rags_999 - did you try your fix on the bulge at rear of the phone?

Any one tried any kind of solution to have two sims installed ? Software / Hardware ?
Terran
Hardware
the one where you have to cut the sim out and stick it into a single SIM.
then you will have to turned on flight mode and turned it of when you want to switch
work great for me (Qtek S100, S110 and now 9100-wizard)
See ya
Has anyone tried the 'king of double card'type dual sim adapters in the Wizard. I have one in my Himalaya and I heard that there is also enough room in the Magician. Would like to know if it also fits into the Wizard (planing to buy one) because I do not like to cut my sims!
Hi bruxelles5
i couldn't understand you bruxelles5 !! would explain it ? thank you in advance
You cut the chips out from two of your existing SIMs and insert them into a special holder that a fits in your phone's SIM slot.
Each time your turn the phone on and off (or use flight mode) it switches between SIMs.
An example here http://duosim.com/.
Another type gives you an extra menu on supported phones to switch numbers without having to turn it on/off.
Note - I've never used any of these gadgets so YMMV. And cutting up your SIM risks damaging it permanently.
I use a SuperSIM card that lets me store up to 12 different sims on the one sim card. It came with a reader that lets you copy your individual sims to the computer, then copy them all to the SuperSIM. Works fine on the Wizard.
Hey mitchelo,
This supersim sounds interesting. How do you switch from one sim to another using your Wizard?

I uesd a dual sim holder and this sim switching software on my xda 2s.
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=19046
Worked pretty well, although beta version did not always pick up one of the telephone numbers. They may have fixed this in the 1.0 version.. You can download the trial and see if it works on the wizard. I have not tried it yet..

Chris
The SuperSIM has a menu that lets you choose between the 12 numbers. It appears as an icon in the programs list. Just click it and you will get the menu.
I have a Telstra and Optus SIM on my supersim.
(P.S. this message was sent from my K-JAM )
Looks like a good bit of kit. Checked the web site out and it looks like it sells for $45 plus shipping. One question though. It talks about only being comaptible with sims that have a couple of different 'formats/protocl' (for want of better words) I am cluless as to what this is for Tmobile USA and 02. Can you shed any light on if I might have a compatibility issue using it?
Many thanks!
Chris
There are some sims that this won't work with. For example I can't use vodafone sim cards with it. I did some searching online before I bought, and knew that voda wouldn't work.
As the expression goes, 'google it'
ok, many thanks, will do. Probably better than trying customer care eh
@cbrow51:
Search the internet for any Ki extractor or a software called Cardinal (can't remember the link).
Extracting the Ki from your sim is the first step you need to create a backup. As of today we are able to extract that value from Comp128V1 cards only. SuperSim and similars are able to emulate these type of cards.
So, give that software a try. If it is able to extract the Ki, feel free to purchase the supersim or whatever.
Save your money for a dinner with your partner, if the software fails.
I hope it does help.
Silver.
You have to have a SIM reader that comes with the SuperSIM to check the Ki. Just google your service provider with something like "{your carrier} supersim". Worked for me.
Almost true, mitchello...
My dearest old smart mouse did his job seamlessly.
Furthermore some of the tools I am talking about are free.
When I was working for another company, I used to carry two mobiles with me. Until I found SIMEMU (still largely available for free on the net) coupled with a set of completely free tools that allowed me to backup my two SIMs into just one.
Search the net for SIMEMU... you'll see that the SuperSIM guy has reinvented the weel... getting payed for his efforts !
C'ya mate.
hi there. where did you buy this super sim and how would i find its compatability with uk network sim cards
cheers
I got mine on eBay. Ask the seller about compatibility, or look on Google.
hi there. thanks for the prompt reply. do you remember who the seller was on ebay. help much appreciated. cheers.
I got mine from a seller called "memoryku". He has several auctions like this one atm:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SUPER-DUAL-M...832609382QQcategoryZ10364QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
These only work with comp128 - v1 cards.
UK cards are not this so it won't work
Will Any dual sim adaptor fit the Magician or are the specific ones?
Also can anyone link me up to a good one?
EDIT: Does the dual sim adaptor that doesnt require cutting fit or not?

Thanks VJay, i dont fancy the idea of cutting my sim cards i have to say, does anyone know if the one that DOESNT require cutting fits?
nobody? I need to order it today you see
I think I saw some application where you can use a special sim, and hold up to different 16 SIMS on it, switching with some software clicks. Not sure though.
jaso2005: 16 in 1 won't work in the UK.
There are ghost sims (2 in 1 non cuts), but they are typically external I think. I haven't seen an internal one.
Cut sim worked great for me though!
V
well ive ordered one of the none cut ones in hope that it might just work! lol we shall see! ill keep you updated!
I once bought a 6-in-1 sim kit. i was able to copy only a pre-paid sim, but most regular sims today cannot be copied. i'm now using a brando 10th era no cut dual sim adapter. no need to power off or switch on/off flight mode to switch sims 'coz it has its own stk menu. i had to make my battery thinner though so it would fit.

I do use a dualsim adapter without problems. Changing between te two SIM's never lasts longer then 3 to 5 seconds.
Have you tried the adapter in a non WM5 phone?

where did you guys get these dual sim adapters? didnt even know they existed, quite interested to have one!
Hi,
http://www.magicsim.com/english/index.asp?new_id=27
They have got all kinds of solutions. I tried the MagicSim16 (16 SIM's on one SIM) but that didn't work, so I had to fall back to a DUAL SIM adapter.

le_cactus
Could you post some more references of the dual sim you bought? even a pic to let us identifiy the correct sim in ebay? Thank you
Hi,
I bought the 7th Era Dual SIM adapter. It's the one where you need to cut your sims. I figured the 8th Era solution wouldn't fit in the Wizard without doing harm to the case. I also tried the 9th era but I couldn't crack the encryption from my Orange SIM, the T-Mobile SIM however wasn't a problem at all.
A warning: If at all possible buy a duo SIM from your provider and cut that to pieces. I cut up my TMO SIM and it doesn't make a good connection with the SIM adapter. Luckely I still had the 9th Era card that I cut up with no problems so I'm using that inside the 7th Era adapter.
B.w.t. the 9th Era SIM card also worked with the Wizard. It's the best solution imho, but you need to be able to crack the encryption of your original SIM and as I understand it Vodafone and Orange SIM use a newer encryption that can't be cracked.
Hopes this helps,
Cheers,
Cactus
Hopes this helps.
Hi,
I also have a Wizard and use the MagicSim. I found that the problem is the Radio version. I have the MDA Vario by T-Mobile Germany. The shipped Radio version is 1.40.10 and have no problems with the DualSim.
Yesterday, I tested a newer OS Version shiped:1.3.2.5 (T-Mobile) new Version:1.3.7.11(Qtek). And then I flashed the Radio from 1.40.10 to 1.12.10. I tested my dualsim and nothing was happend, only i restart my wizard.
Than i tested another OS 1.5.4.2 with Radio 1.13.10 and 1.12.10 with the same problem. Than i restore the Radio to 1.40.10 and the dualsim works perfekt.
i hope u understand my bad english
Good luck...
dual sim card
now everything works fine, i don´t know if this comes from changing the network-choice of the handy: I had been in Austria and changed this item into manual ( from automatic). now I put back the old "automatic" modus and the simcard (or the wizard) finds a net in about 15sec... so changing from one card to the other is no problem..
But the backpart (Idon´t know the englisch word) will no longer fit perfectly, but it is only 2mm higher on one side.
cheers

I ordered a dual Sim from Ebay a month ago and received it a week later. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work. It just doesn't fit right, the stress on the battery cover is quite heavy, since the cover is under stresss from sticking out so much. I am afraid the plastic bits will break and the cover will become useless. The stress is caused by the thick little black chip in the adapter, that does not fit into the sim slot. Also I cannot get the adapter to work, the Vario reports an invalid Sim. This can be due to a defective adapter ( caused by me twisting it while trying to fit it without the battery cover being stressed) or by my ROM version or even the T-Mobile Simcards, which have been reported not to work with dual sims in some threads. I previously tried a cut-out dual sim in my Magician, but no dice, the wretched thing would not work. my simcards still worked, but the Magician kept seeing invalid sims. Probably also a case of my destroying the little bugger ( I am not very carefull I guess, but of an impatient guy who cannot handle those cheap ass fragile things).
Ok, my question is: can someone post some pictures of the way they fitted the adapter and how much the battery cover is sticking out?
It would help me big time in deciding if I will try a third time to get it right. thanks people!
I recently bought a MagicSIM from a German eBay seller (http://stores.ebay.de/CironStar) including cutting service. Three days after sending him my two SIMs, I received it back yesterday and it works great in my Wizard!
What I like especially is, that you don't have to enter your PIN each time when switching the SIM.
I still fear those cut-up job ones... even if they do it for you; one wrong move and *snip* goes your SIM - have fun explaining that to your operator :/
I see they now offer a no-cutting-involved version as well. Has anybody tried this type ? It seems like it'd at least double-up in thickness, and there's a chippy bit that goes outside of the area where the SIM goes which definitely looks like it'd get smushed by the battery.. so I'm sceptic
what is the main purpose you guys use a dual sim adaptor? is it because u need to travel from country to country all the time? Another question is, once u have fitted two SIMs in your phone, can they BOTH receive calls at all times if someone called u on either number?
toneslee - yes, dual SIMs auto-switch the active SIM from time to time, and you should be able to receive calls, text messages, etc. on both.
My main reason to do this would be so that I can drop both my vodafone and lebara sims into the thing. Lebara is nice and cheap for my international calls (work, girlie, etc.), but is stupid-expensive for national calls - so I'd like to use my Vodafone for that.
Right now that means I have to keep two phones Which isn't tooooo bad.. but if at all possible, I'd rather just keep the one.
@ toneslee: You CANNOT receive calls on both Sims simultaneously. Your device has only one GSM radio and can handle connection to the GSM towers, data and voice from only one SIM at a time. What the dual sim adapter that ZeBoxx uses can do, is automatically switch which SIM is in use every 1 to 30 minutes, thereby trying to catch as much calls in both numbers as possible. But true simultaneous reception on both SIM cards is not possible. They cannot be active at the same time, so when one Sim is registered in the network the other is not connected and people calling that number get the same thing like your phone is off, e.g. voice mail.
correct Though I thought they switched a little faster than 1 minute >_<
I'm using a cut sim in my magician, although the "technology" is so basic, there's no reason why it shouldn't work with any phone. Cutting was fine, just do it carefully and use thin scissors. In my experience, there's still enough "space" to make a mistake and for it to still work. You have to be quite unsteady to screw it up and slice right through the middle of the "chip" in the mini-sim.
The only problem I had was that the sim was now too thin so I slid some slivers of paper between the metal sleeve and the mini-sims, and it works fine.
I have two numbers, one contract and one historic PAYG that I keep in case old friends don't have the new number.
V
Thanks for the explanations, guy. I understand now.
Anyone tried those
Hi
has anyone tried one of those multi super 16 in 1 sim card thingys..
basically a sim card that you can load with 16 identities...
+ a usb dongle thing to program it..
i was thinking about cloning my sim card so i can keep it in 2 phones one for work and one for when on the lash.
Supersim 16in1
yes, it works fine. I have 5 phone-numbers on it. but you're able to clone only the (old) v1 simcards.
ermm how do i tell ?
How do i tell what version the simcards are ?
I love my wizard, but sometimes I want to take something smaller with me. I have another cellphone, but I don't want to have to pull them apart and switch the sims every time I swap them. Is there anything out there that will make an exact copy of a sim card so i could keep one in both of them and then just turn off one when I'm not using it?

they do that here in Bulgaria, but you have to be VEERY careful to switch off the unused one..
I know it is a lenghty process and takes a day to clone the card
guttrhead: what country are you in?
Have a search on the board for multi sims or clone sims.
Basically, in Western Europe, you're unlikely to have much success due to the encryption system used in the SIM.
V
Most providers here in europe offer DUO SIM solutions, where they provide you with a second sim with your telephone number so you can put that in a second phone or a car system. Most of them only charge a small one-time fee for it.
Of cource only one of the SIM's can be active.
Cheers

I'm in the US on cingular. I'm thinking about just buying something like this from ebay. If it doesn't work, at least I could use the sim utilities it has, considering the wizard doesnt really have any.
guttrhead: as le_cactus says, if you can get a 2nd sim, get one.
However, cloning a sim requires cracking its protection. In this country at least, that can be destructive to the sim, and even then, not successful.
I've posted a number of posts on this issue. But I have no experience with US sims...

Multi SIM Cards avalible here in Thailand as well. Switch by *100# from Phone to Phone (up to 4 phones. Check with your provider!
I've just ordered one of these super sims. Looks like the donkey's dangler, then I can keep my wizard and universal on the go and switch as desired.
If it works of course...
I have a similar card reader + card... from another copmpany...
It works fine with portuguese cards... I have it for 2 years now...
As naugthy said, it really takes quite a few hours to read(crack) the original... just depends on how fast is your computer... mine took about 8-10 hours per card (2 years ago...)...
But they also warn that cracking the card *may* be destructive for the card... But if it happens, you can try to contact you network provider and ask for a replacement because it «just stopped working»... or something...

It looks good .... but does it allow you to use your telephone service? Reading the details on the advert it seems to me that it only copies the data from your sim but mentions nothing about using it for calls/GPRS/GSM etc.
If it works let us know. I am a bit wary about swapping my sim between my MDA Pro and 6515 and this gadget looks an ideal solution if it really does work (I have my doubts :? ).
I will report back. And out of geek interest, I will be doing the cracking on an AMD FX55 processor with 4Gb of dual channel RAM, so I will time the cracking process.

The kit I have has a card reader/writer and copying software. You need to copy/crack the sim card and save it into a file in your disk. You do this for the sims you want to copy (I have 2 cards, one for each network).
After that, you copy these files into the multi-card using the same software, and you're ready to use it.
It works perfectly for calls, gprs, gsm... In the SIM apllications area I have an extra app that enables me to switch between cards.
The card I own (not the one that was posted) only has one problem: it cannot have a PIN.
Can i just get another cingular sim and load the settings onto it, or does it have to be the super sim that comes with it.

It has to be the superSIM that comes with it...
At first I thought I'd wait for someone else to try the super-sim. Now I am regretting changing my mind.
No problem with the order - nice and quick. Super-Sim, USB sim reader, Installation CD and instruction card in a neat bubble pack. The instructions were not very clear to me (poor translation?) and contained warnings that some sims were not compatible and the copying process may destroy them. The instructions on the CD were a little clearer so I decided to take a chance.
Tried it with the T-Mobile sim from my MDA Pro. 3 Hours later it told me it wasn't going to work. Same for the o2 sim from my XDA2.
Both sims still appear to be working but as I understand it, the more cycles of trying to 'crack' the sims, the more chance of destroying them. This makes me reluctant to try again with different settings.
Sorry if I seem a bit vague but I didn't really know what I was doing. I could have done with better instructions.
Anyone know a little more about this please?

I too would like this info. I travel a lot and my company gives me a prepaid sim when I am traveling for them.
Later.......
There is already a thread on this, use the search to find it. basically you have two options: The one where you cut your sims (try not to destroy them, with me this method did not work because the dual sim adapter was dead) or the one where you put your sims into a dual sim adapter. the last method leaves a large bump on the back of the device and causes the battery cover to bulge. I tried it, but the bulge is too ugly for me and the chances are that the cover breaks. use search to find more info on this subject.

Worked for me in my Motorola Razr V3 but was troublesome in the Cingular 8125. I haven't tested it since I upgraded my OS on the 8125. But will do that soon.
the vavolo (sim clone) wont work in many countries due to the type of sim.
