Bricked my Rogers Dream. - G1 General

So tonight I was feeling good and decided to try messing around with my Rogers Dream. The first thing I did was install the latest radio firmware. And after applying the patch I noticed something... the radio and SPL should already be updated because I followed H's instructions on rooting the phone. I prayed that I was wrong. I looked on the Rogers logo as I was booting my phone as a wave of horror washed over me. It's bricked.
Ok, that was dumb. But let's move on. Any suggestions on what I should do? I've looked around and the impression I get is there is no way to unbrick it. Now if I'm completely wrong then I would be most grateful if someone could direct me to instructions for unbricking my phone. If not, I'm going to try sending it back to Rogers... which I don't look forward to doing.
If they don't fix it then would a bricked Rogers Dream help anyone? I'm willing to send it over to anyone who could make use of it.
Edit:
holdennull said:
Yeah, I did. I'm pretty sure it's bricked. However, I just got off the phone with Rogers, after they told me to take out the battery and put it back in and hold HOME and POWER. I did as I was told, pretending that I haven't the slightest clue. Now they're sending me a new phone and I have to send mine back so they can check for water damages and stuff; hopefully they don't bother to check for my tampering and then do something horrible to me for doing so.
Thanks a lot for the input guys. Sorry for wasting your time.

I've tried that but it doesn't do a thing (well it's still stuck at the Rogers screen).

Bad idea... water damage is not covered by warranty so he will get charged full price of the device. "Bricked" phone will be revived by HTC and will be sold or set out as a warranty replacements. T-mo users have had their share of bricks so we have an idea of how it works
On the side note.... HTC Dream will most likely survive water damage if you let it dry for about a week. Well, at least my phone did

Aren't there water tamper stickers in these phones? They change colour when exposed to water, so Rogers would find out easily if there is the possibility of water damage.

Hi holdennull,
I have rogers G1 bricked while doing SPL upgrade talk to rogers tech support and they ask me to send the phone and they will send me the replacment, but I have same question that did you charged for tempering or rogers only look for physical and water damanges.
Please advise

I think I bricked my Mytouch :(

Yep, so I went ahead and decided to take the plunge.

I created my goldcard and went ahead and followed intructions accordingly to theunlockr.com goldcard guide. Except I used Engineering SPL 1.33.2010 (SAPPIMG.zip) and used update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2010-signed.zip (UPDATE.zip) for the process and used the Google ION as the base image and now I don't have fastboot and i get stuck at the HTC screen. I was fine before I downloaded the Google ION recovery image and updated with Aman-RA's bootloader. Nothing works, so is it a comfirmed brick, and if so will T-Mobile take it back seeing as the screen say "HTC Magic"?
Before I get the lecture I understand I hold all responsibility and hold no one liable but myself. Sadly I feel a part of me has died.
I don't know if tmobile is any smarter than rogers, but when i bricked my htc dream, i simply took it to rogers and said that i turned it on and it was stuck at the boot screen.
They gave me a new one without question.
Intresting. Did they replace it then and there. You see I've only had this phone for 2 months with the insurance package and was wondering if they give you a new one then and there, and if they make you pay some sort of fee up front. I'm new to T-Mobile so I have no idea as to wat to expect, but hope that they replace it.
i am tmobile and had a friend who's tmobile and he bricked his. he took it to a tmobile store and said that it told him to update something and now it wouldn't work. i dont know if it was boot screen, i just know he bricked his and they did it no question. not sure about if he had to pay. i dont think so since they thought it was a problem on their behalf. i say try it, if it doesn't work, try again another day with different rep. if that don't work, smash that mofo and just pay the security deposit. better than buying it all over again but this time for like 400$ because of no plan. :S
Yeah i bricked mine a day after having it, and got a new one next day. i dont think it matters when you do it.

Well I called instead and had an Android expert walk me through some steps to try and get the phone to work. She had me hold "HOME" + "POWER" without letting go. I couldn't help but laugh on the inside as she was telling me what to do while I was playing dumb. "Nope... Nothing is happening! The MyTouch 3G screen is still just hanging there ma'am". We did that twice and she finally told me she was sending me a New or Refurbished one with free UPS Express Shipping "yay" since I have the insurance and because its a premium phone.
Another thing to, she had me look at the back of the phone behind the battery for a white, red, or pink dot. Luckily mine was white. She tells me later that thats a water damage indicator and that if its white that the phone is fine otherwise water damage is present. I did not know that, but its useful information nonetheless

I bricked my Rogers HTC Magic and I did the same thing. I called Rogers and told them that when I turned the phone on it was stuck at the rogers logo. They guided me through a small process which obviously didn't work. Then they decided that my phone was dead upon arrival and sent me a new one withing 3-5 days.

Right now I'm using a Sony Ericsson TM506 while I wait. Ugh* I got used to having the MyTouch that nothing else feels right. Crappy ass phone. Once I get my replacement I will be giving the SE back to my son.
Sounds bad. have you tried ADB maybe it finds your phone so you can add recovery again.
If you can get into the Fastboot screen (or get any screen for that matter), doesn't it mean your phone ISN'T bricked?
Why were you laughing at pressing home+power that should get you to the recovery screen if it had flashed properly.
Did you try taking out the battery, pressing and holding Back+Power as you reinsterted the battery?
If your phone isn't bricked it would have taken you to the fastboot screen which from there would allow you to boot into a recovery image and reflash your SPL.

I was simply laughing on the inside because I knew that wasn't going to work. I had already tried that before calling and I got nothing from the phone. The Boot loader was taken out when I tried to flash the Google Ion Image to it. Apparently it doesn't come with a bootloader or something. Either way I messed it up, and it wouldn't fastboot.

Can I bring back a bricked HD2 from TMOUS?

I flashed the right hspl 1024 version. Then I flashed the wrong rom. It was one from dutty on 3/28. Now I have no bootloader mode, no boot, no charging, It sometimes gives a error for drivers when I plug it in. It will not hard reset, or go into boot loader mode from the buttons on the phone. Could some explain how to bring this back because I cant return mine.
Mistakes happen and that is why the HD2 has this separate forum. I hope there is a way to bring yours back. I wish the different ROM versions weren't so different as to cause this to even be possible...

That's a completely different set of hardware, and has no bearing on whether or not someone can bring an HD2 back from the dead. Android phones are much, much harder to totally brick.
Let me tell you I did the EXACT same thing and I couldnt get mine to turn on or ANYTHING it was completely dead! I called Tmo and I had to send it back to them under "defective" and they sent me a brand new one and I will NEVER make that mistake again!
Sorry I miss understood. I thought he was asking if he could return the phone.
I have returned a g1 I bricked before.

I think I made this guide on another forums
SRY to break it up 2 u but you have a HARD BRICK
Yup! ^_^ sad I know No way of fixing this one
You should try this
Step 1: Enjoy staring at your cool new HD2 for hours
Step 2: Scream REALLY LOUD! cause you got a Brick phone
Step 3: find some one you REALLY DONT LIKE
Step 4: throw your cool new hard brick at them
Step 5: laugh out loud and say some guy from the internet told you to do it
Step 6: sue XDA and ME for inducing you to try new things with your cool phone
Step 7: have sex, drink a beer, watch a movie and Go buy a NEW phone
Step 8: ENJOY
-Note-
if you get another brick phone please follow steps 1 through 5 agn.

While T-Mobile can send the phone back to HTC for a reflash, there is still overhead associated to this. I'm afraid too many of these "bricked" phones may lead HTC to harden the SPL security.

That depends on whether they are able to start the phone enough to see the spl. If they can't, then they won't know it has a hard spl installed.
If it's within the return/exchange window I'd bring it back with a "I have no idea it just stopped working" look of innocence. I doubt most of the TMo sales staff even know how to check things like SPL numbers, etc.
If you deny any wrongdoing, and plead your case, i bet they swap it for you just to make you go away. And if you do get a no answer, I'd even try again with a different staff person, some are gonna be easier than others I'd imagine.
Or, alternatively, if you bought insurance, you could drop it in a bucket of water and bring it in soaking wet. Of course technically that's fraud, so let your conscience be your guide on that one.
Good luck.

3 is there anyway i can completly break the phone so it wont even power on so tmobile cant tell what ive done but still replace it under warranty

Smashing the thing with a sledge hammer should do it, but I strongly believe that this will actually void your warranty.
I suggest that this is a real bone-headed move on your part and you deserve what you got. Returning the thing now for warranty is FRAUD since this is CLEARLY *your fault*. Flashing the 1.33.2005 SPL is not only POINTLESS, it also can be done SAFELY *even with a non-matching radio installed*. Of course you would have to actually read the instructions to learn what the safe way actually IS. Not that its hard to find... its in this forum's WIKI: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/phpwiki213/index.php?pagename=HTC_Dream_Bootloader (look under "new/safe install instructions"). Wow, you didn't read that, did you?

Yup. I did this to my first HD2, the night I got it. I managed to take it down to T-Mobile the next day, and convince them it was a bad model, and they gave me a new one, but they only do that in the first 14 days after you purchase it.
There really is nothing to do but get a new one.
Personally, after I got my second one, I just stuck with the stock radio.

The second post on the radio thread was probably from my doing as I flashed a 2.05.50.xx on my T-Mo and bricked. I got mine off of cragislist and luckily it was under 30 days and the guy was cool enough to do (...for discounted Wii and 360 moding) a replacement for me.
But...It all goes back to what then seniors have always said when I started on the ROM dev forums. READ! I know you are getting that left and right and it doesn't change your situation, but YOU WON'T do that again.
Don't flash (or mod) anything late at night is a good rule of thumb...I HAVE learned my lesson when I disobey that rule...luckily Walmart/Target are unaware of gut swaps. But I bricked my HD 2 and did a semi-brick on my old Tilt before the semi-brick information was available at no fault of my own. I am sorry for your situation... I HAVE BEEN THERE. I keep a cheap flip phone (since I left the CDMA world) handy at all times since my first Brick way back when.
I don't even post that much anymore...I just read. But I am still a flashing junkie.
Hopefully, you will get a replacement and have attained some wisdom from the situation so it won't happen again or this thread you started will keep others from the bricking wayside.
It's most likely not a brick did u try to put your sim in an other phone? I think a fine.. :/
I recently bricked an HD2 (not radio related) and was told by a few people that if I send it to HTC and they figure out the device has any custom/cooked ROM or an SPL that is hacked, or from a test ROM (MFG spl) or basically anything that isn't an official/shipped release then they'll hit you w/ a $600 fine. And I'm assuming they don't send the device back to you..
Just what I've heard, and maybe it was just for my 'type' of brick - My thread
And no, i don't have another method, was just gonna inform him about JTAG if he wanted, I guess the ".51 Radio brick" isn't quite as hard to recover as it is others (correct me if I'm wrong).
thank to EVERYONE for all your input. i'm still on a quest to try and salvage this phone because like i said, it wasnt even mine. i already thought of exchanging it at tmo, but my friend got it off of craigslist, so thats out... and i am a former employee of tmous, and i know all the little sim card tricks and what not, and that wasnt successful either. im trying to find someone with jtag gear locally, but here in hawaii there arent a whole lot of options as far cellphone repairs and reprograming... ive bee scouring the net looking for other solutions, and if i do find something, i will be SURE to post it here so that others with the same problem can bring their phones back to life... thanks again everyone!!

Bootloader is the power and two volume buttons together right?
Volume down plus power, ,, both plus power is hard reset.
Which model HD2? Tmous or regular?
’trying to flash Android,, ’ did your friend byanychance follow a guide that said he must flash some rom to downgrade the spl? (All non Tmous stock roms will brick a Tmous)

Seeing that it is a TMOUS and it will not boot to bootloader it is probably radio bricked. The only fix for this is JTAG, contact MobileTechVideos.com they offer JTAG services and are the best I know
plus their price is very reasonable as well as they offer a money back guarantee if they can not revive the device.

What do you mean by a flat battery? faulted battery?
sorry mate, me too once had in the same condition as urs i guess, no other way around than JTAG
^ at least, there's still hope..
riff box is there for a reason. its user friendly making jtag procedure as simple as ABC..
flat battery = no power (busted or no charge, as the case maybe)
There is another possibility that has happened that know one has brought up yet. Sometimes there can be a screen issue causing the phone not to show a display. This happened to me before and I just used my insurance I have through T-Mobile to get the device fixed. Even if you don't have a warranty through your carrier you could call up and talk to them about it. Just say something like you woke up in the morning and looked at your phone and it was blank. That there is no damage and your not sure why it just all of a sudden stopped working on you after a nights charge. Sometimes just knowing what to say works. Not always but you could luck out, worst thing is they say there is no warranty left.
^ a long shot IMO but its probable... my cent
I would agree it is a long shot. I've had great luck though by simply calling back. Like lets say I get an answer I want, I'll hang up and call back to talk to someone else. Normally that does the trick. For instance one time I had a problem with my credit card company after bring in the hospital for awhile I hadn't made a payment. One person said I would need to make a $400 payment and there was nothing they could do to help. I hung up and called back, talked to someone different and that person took off $400 from my bill so I didn't end up needing to make a payment. Just shows that you slipped be persistent.

Thank you to everyone for their input! I greatly appreciated it
No problem.
Off subject but man this slideit keyboard really made a lot of mistakes. I didn't notice until I reread my comment. It looks like I'll need to go back to touchpal.
