my wifi stops working when

Can anyone explain why my wifi connection is dropped when I put my phone into standby mode. This does not happen when I am using GPRS?
If the battery was not so crap I would not need to keep putting it into standby mode.

I guess its because when the device is in standby all the PDA functions are stopped, but the phone functions are not. GPRS is connected via the phone line which is active in standby mode thus it does not drop.
This does not sound out of the ordinary to me.

thanks for confirming my fears. So does anybody know how you can use this device for 8 hours (working day) with wifi switched on? I normally leave it logged into IM when I am at home and do not want to leave it charing all the time.

Try Start-Settings-System-Power-Advanced and untick the battery Power Timer.

Agile is clever enough not to power off the device but and all that happens is the screen dims. I am trying to put the device in to standby but leave wifi on along with running agile messenger but this does not seem to be possible. The reason for this is to prolong the battery life by not having the screen on as wifi zaps my juice so much more than GPRS.
It is however possible when using GPRS as the phone function works when it is in standby.

i needed to do this on my dell axim too, used a program called screenlock which kills the display and locks the buttons. you press 2 buttons to wake the system. Wifi and other apps continue running.

be careful, if you cant work out which hardware buttons its using, you'll have to soft reset your device (if it works at all, i've not tested on wizard)

just tested and it appears to use messaging and voice speed dial as its 2 buttons

Tips on Getting the Most out of your Battery

Anybody have any tips on getting the most out of your battery. I'm currently rumming WM6 business edition and just want to know how I can get more out of my battery. I have read to turn off wi-fi and gprs when not using it.. is there anything else that can be done. I have all the battery patches but i dont feel as if they are working..any help would be greatly appreciated

Turn off your phone overnight. You can get an app to do this by schedule (I cannot remember the name, sorry).

Do you mean turn my phone off when i recharge? I ususal recharge during the night

i pretty much never run out of battery and i am running windows mobile 6, all i do is just make sure the screen is off (the button on the top right) and it really helps the battery out

Do you do this during the night or throughout the day. Thus having the phone set to turn off after 5 mins of inactivity

by the way, how the heck can i disable "gprs always on" thing? i don't need gprs often, so it just hangs out there without a real purpose, and probably draining my battery a bit...

You can use NoData. Works well for me. Needs registration to the website:

that just lets you turn it on and off. is there any app that turns on only when needed ie you try to access the internet or get a mms messaging

WM6 should do this after a standard install...by default! Make sure you have GPRS AlwaysOn turned off (Using a Registry Editor search for "Always" and find your matching Internet Connection. Set the value of the AlwaysOn DWORD to 0, not 1.)

i press the button on the top right whenever its not in use. And of course at night.

i set the display to the 2nd bar from the left. it saves way more battery then having the bar in the middle. i turned off the beam. i set power off to 2mins and backlight out @ 30secs. i push the power button (top right) during any phone call to turn the display off. my battery can last me all day and i talk/txt alot.

Buy an extended battery?

I meant turn it off if you leave it overnight without charging it. My point is moot if you charge it overnight anyway.
I charge mine at work mostly, so I don't charge it overnight. Generally I do so every couple of days.

Found it..but there is not a way to actually turn off gprs if I use it for direct push correct?

ok..not to start something but if uve gone as far to buy a ext battery and ur still not happy w/ batt life sell ur device and buy a nokia they are great on battery.. u cant expect to get good battery life out of this thing..i mean look what it does...

What kind of battery life are you seeing with the WM6 BE rom? I installed it a week ago and so far I've been AMAZED as the battery life. With my reg-tweaked Cingular 2.25 stock rom I'd end the day between 45-55%. Now It's 75-80% solid.
Also, it seems that Wifi uses less power in this rom too...

As of right now I'm not using my extended battery because i wanted to go back to the original battery that came with the phone for a short time since the other battery is bulkier, I only like to use it during the weekends when I'm not close to a power source. I've used all the tips in this thread and they have all worked as my battery has been going strong. thx

Is there a way to keep it from disconnecting when the phone goes to sleep?
Because if i want to keep bejive on, when i wake up the phone it tries to connect through 3G...
oh and.. in a related matter, is there something i can do so it asks me if i want to connect to 3G, instead of just connecting automatically?

in the tool click menu>more settings>connections>Enable wifi on standby mode.
click ok > done. reboot the device. that's it.
wifi remains active when the phone goes in standby.
(when the phone is set to blank screen mode wifi turns off anyway. this seems not to be configurable.)

I think is easier to unthick to turn off screen....Or to dimm light after few second unthick both battery proprties advanced,....

Was wondering if its possible to keep the wireless still turned on when the phone goes to standby. As in 3G is always on, thus always giving me new emails

Easy....
Download Shap's Advanced Config Tool. There is an option to keep the Wifi on even when the phone goes on standby.
Once Advanced Config Tool installed, launch it, go to Menu/More settings/connections/Enable Wifi on Standby.
also I would recommand you to download a basic freeware named ScreenOff (by Applied PDA software), and use it to turn off the backlight without turning off the Wifi.

I've always having trouble to maintain the WiFi connection whether it's using battery or AC.
I've installed the Advanced Config Tool, the "Enable WiFi on Standby" indicated already enabled. Then I used the ScreenOff. After about 10 seconds, the WiFi connection was lost as I verified it by pinging the HD2 from a PC. It's plug into AC all the time.
However if leave the HD2 just "dim the screen", that seems to be the only way to maintain the WiFi. Obviously set it not to go into standby after 30mins (the default value).

when you go into wifi advanced settings you can select power mode. when you set power mode in the medium setting, wifi keeps connected even in standby! and it also doesn't drain your battery while in standby. just try it. first select high power mode and turn phone in standby. wifi connection is lost. when you turn it back in, you will see wifi connecting.
with power in the middle setting, turning phone in standby keeps wifi alive, with very low power consumption. and when you turn phone back on, you will see that wifi is already connected.
i use wifi all the time when at home. my data connection is turned off. and still my push mails are recei ing through wifi!

Not that easy, I tried all power modes and in all occations it whent of after 1 minute (ping timeout). Weird that all roms behave so differently

My HD2 acts very strange. when my wifi connectivity is on & IDLE (no data activity, device is not in standby mode), my ping results vary from 50ms in average to 200+ and sometimes I'm experiencing even higher spikes of 500ms+.
I have tried to change the wifi's adapter power scheme to "best performance", but it doesn't seem to change something.
However, as long as there is an activity, my ping replies from the HD2 seem to be fine (less than 15/10ms).

seems like some powersaving feature... when idle, why should the wifi chip work at top speed.. just like cpu scaling....

my power saving slider is in the middle and still when the screen goes off and I switch it back on the wifi is reconnecting.

Have you done the ping test from another PC/laptop on your network? Wait for about 1 minute after the screen is off and if you still can ping your HD2, I think it's probably your push mail somehow manage to maintain the wifi connection. I might try that if that's the case as I've tried absolutely everything else and so far abosolutely nothing can keep the wifi constantly on if the screen goes off.

i can still ping it after a few minutes... what you say about push mail and keeping wifi on makes sense... first thing i do when configuring my phone after fresh install is setting up my push mail... maybe that's why my wifi is always on.
You could set up a free gmail push account?

I'm not sure if my problem is related at all but my wifi only seems to connect to my router when it's diconnected from my PC. I'm sure before I upgraded to 1.48 ROM it stayed connected. Any idea guys?
oh, and I've only ever had it in the middle power saving mode and it looks like it does disconnect when it goes into standy.

I've set up gmail account as well nut as far as I know it's just IMAP or correct meif I'm wrong. if It's not push mail, it'll still kinda polling isn't it? what's your view?

Good news guys, I've finally managed to get the WiFi to stay on even after the screen is off. Yes the trick is the "push mail". I deleted my original gmail imap account and set up a Microsoft Push Mail based Gmail account. Then did the ping test and it's staying on for sure now. But I did notice that it'll have 1 packet drop occasionally.

wifi disconnecting in standby
my hd2 stayed connected to wifi in standby, then i applied a few tweaks and .cabs, i had a few little issues like the screen freexing and not refreshing so i did a hard reset, since then wifi wont stay connacted when the phone is on standby, it is confusing

[Q] Data does not sync while hd2 is on stand by

I have setup the phone to sync weather for example every half an hour. If the phone is on stand by it does not sync. It is as if it turns off the data connection. Any help would be appreciated.

Any ideas? It will only sync when the phone is awake and unlocked? If the phone is locked it doesn't sync

That is the only thing I have noticed so far.

No help at all? Basicily data does not sync at all when the phone is on stand by. It is as if the data connection disconnects. I cant seem to work out how to "keep it alive" Any help would be appreciated.

In sleep mode the screen is turned off, all system processes are suspended (including data transfer), and the CPU is throttled down to its lowest power state - no activity. However, all instructions and data still reside in memory, and dynamic RAM memory chips require power to hold their content.
So what kinda sync do you want to have?

The main one I would like to have updated is the weather. I do not see the point of being able to set the weather to automticly update every half an hour if the phone does not do it while in stand by mode. If I turn the phone on and update maually it works fine. Is there any way to sort this?

My phone will automatically update itself if the set amount of time as passed while it was in standby mode. Meaning, if I set it to autoupdate every hour and I've had my phone in standby mode for 2 hours, when I wake it up, it will automatically sync the weather and any other data that should have been syncing during it's standby phase. Does your phone not do this as well?
There is also an app called "Screen Off" which will ONLY turn off the screen and not put your phone in stand by mode which means that all data and such will continue to function while your screen is off.
Oh and I was waiting on a definitive repsonse to the "only weather" question I asked. Obviously, just your weather not updating properly and ALL your data not updating properly are two very different problems.

I did not read the first post carefully. So you mean - the system timers do not work properly - they don't wake up your phone from standby for weather update?

I have mine set to do the same, but fo example for again the weather, I have it set to update every 1 hours, when I leave the phone on overnight and check it in the morning it does not update untill I press the manual update button.
Say I had the phone updated at 11pm and put it on stand by, check the phone at 8am the last update time was 11pm. It will stay at 11pm and only when I press the update button does it then update. It is not an overly big thing but I am under the impression that If I set the phone to update every hour even if it is on stand by or not the latest it should be behind is 59 minutes!
