Tips on Getting the Most out of your Battery - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Anybody have any tips on getting the most out of your battery. I'm currently rumming WM6 business edition and just want to know how I can get more out of my battery. I have read to turn off wi-fi and gprs when not using it.. is there anything else that can be done. I have all the battery patches but i dont feel as if they are working..any help would be greatly appreciated

turn IR beam off too...

is that set on by default?

Turn off your phone overnight. You can get an app to do this by schedule (I cannot remember the name, sorry).

Do you do this during the night or throughout the day. Thus having the phone set to turn off after 5 mins of inactivity

by the way, how the heck can i disable "gprs always on" thing? i don't need gprs often, so it just hangs out there without a real purpose, and probably draining my battery a bit...

You can use NoData. Works well for me. Needs registration to the website:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=246171&st=0

that just lets you turn it on and off. is there any app that turns on only when needed ie you try to access the internet or get a mms messaging

WM6 should do this after a standard install...by default! Make sure you have GPRS AlwaysOn turned off (Using a Registry Editor search for "Always" and find your matching Internet Connection. Set the value of the AlwaysOn DWORD to 0, not 1.)
Let me know if you need any other help.

i press the button on the top right whenever its not in use. And of course at night.

i set the display to the 2nd bar from the left. it saves way more battery then having the bar in the middle. i turned off the beam. i set power off to 2mins and backlight out @ 30secs. i push the power button (top right) during any phone call to turn the display off. my battery can last me all day and i talk/txt alot.

I meant turn it off if you leave it overnight without charging it. My point is moot if you charge it overnight anyway.
I charge mine at work mostly, so I don't charge it overnight. Generally I do so every couple of days.

Found it..but there is not a way to actually turn off gprs if I use it for direct push correct?

ok..not to start something but if uve gone as far to buy a ext battery and ur still not happy w/ batt life sell ur device and buy a nokia they are great on battery.. u cant expect to get good battery life out of this thing..i mean look what it does...

What kind of battery life are you seeing with the WM6 BE rom? I installed it a week ago and so far I've been AMAZED as the battery life. With my reg-tweaked Cingular 2.25 stock rom I'd end the day between 45-55%. Now It's 75-80% solid.
Also, it seems that Wifi uses less power in this rom too...

As of right now I'm not using my extended battery because i wanted to go back to the original battery that came with the phone for a short time since the other battery is bulkier, I only like to use it during the weekends when I'm not close to a power source. I've used all the tips in this thread and they have all worked as my battery has been going strong. thx

battery woes :(

ok guys as advised by someone i fully drain my vodafone magic till it dies and then charge it to a 100%.
last night i did the same just before goin to sleep, when i woke up in the morning the battery was at 76% after about 8 hours.I just had 1 missed call,1 sms,1 tweet and 1 email.
How can the battery drain so fast for no work at all???
pls help......
Do you have alot of widgets running? What do you have switched on, Bluetooth,GPS,WiFi? How often do you have the "Data Synch" set for? All of these drain the battery, if they are all working at the same time it goes pretty quick.
Clinton
Woa! For the battery to drain overnight to 76% is crazy. never had this problem with my magic. It actually last very long.
But 76% overnight most likely means your battery is faulty and or you are leaving gps, wifi, and have quite a few things running on the phone like ClintonH stated.
however if you have everything off, as well as the brightness set low. Then contact Vodafone and let them know your issue. they should replace your battery at a free cost.
I suggest people use their battery for a week or 2 to see better results with their battery life. I started having poor battery life with my magic but now I can last about 2 day before I recharge it again.
As other user mentioned, it also depend what you have on or running in the background when your phone is on standby. I suggest you use task manager applications to kill unnecessary applications that might be running.
thanks guys
nope i have gps bluetooth and wifi turned off
i turned the background data off from settings
will try gettin task manager and see if it makes a diff!
thanks once again

Yes, are you by any chance downloading apps? Sometimes they hang and the download stops / continues lots of times. And when they complete your trackball flashes white.
ok thank mate i'll keep note of that!
I read a quite interesting post in the vodafone forum.
A user complained about the battery life of his HTC Magic. Check the answer from Wayne_Vodafone:
The HTC Magic employs a battery that requires overcharging and topup charging. You must charge it as much and as often as possible. The more you charge the better the battery life becomes. So after a few charges you should see the benefit of this. Letting the charge drain out undoes this so try and charge as often as possible

It actually seems to work. At least for me, try it for yourself.
I have to charge my HT-03A every night if I do not want it to die the next day. I am assuming that is why HTC gives you two batteries, because the battery goes so fast. As long as you are able to carry that second battery around with you, and be able to charge it every night, I don't really see a problem. But for it to go from 100% to 76% overnight means you are running programs that you do not need to. I will add that I have Wi-Fi continuously on, and my Contacts and Calendar are continuously synchronized. With barely any use I am usually at around 50% by the end of the day.

Pretty interesting, and that was an official vodafone response? Why wouldn't HTC say that in the first place? Will give it a go anyway...
Yeah, was a official Vodafone Response.
For me: I've loaded mine over night this morning, now its 19:26 and it's still over 85%. I used it for some SMS, receive a MMS and some WLAN.
ok guys thank u so much for the responses,im gonna give it a go too!

about the flashing trackball.......it still happens...no notifications.....
You never want to drain a Lithium-Ion battery. NiCd batteries have memory, in which it's better to drain them. But not Li-Ion. They will die quicker if you do
ok thanks xantonin.....
i charged my phone to 100%,then made a call for 41 min, battery went to 91%.
went to sleep immediately after that, woke up in morning with 1 missed call and 1 sms, after 8 hours......battery at 70%......thats not right is it?

That could be right.
Depends on what's running.
Where are you checking for 100%?
If you are charging until the green light comes on - that's 90%. The phone takes longer to charge passed 90% than it does to charge up to 90%.
I charged to 99%, and drove around with the GPS on for a few hours (about 2) and came back at about 75%.
However some days, when I charge my phone over night (true 100%), I can listen to music on my way to work (40 mins) on my phone, play with it a bit at work, and 3 hours later it will say 94%.
So, the battery is very touchy it seems...
Try turning off 3G (It's still pretty fast on 2G, try it for a day)
And also make sure GPS is off. Keep your brightness no more than 30%, and make sure WiFi is off. Make sure you don't have any widgets that connect online either.
You should get good standby time
Use apndroid to save battery life
Download apndroid from the Market. Use it to turn off the cellular internet before you go to bed and whenever else you want to save battery life.
There's also an app called Spare Parts in the Market that could help you. As well as giving information about your battery status and battery health, you can also see stastics of your application usage and battery history. A very useful app!
Plus it also enables other features like enabling fancy animations for the keyboard and screen rotation.

Battery Life Vogue Android

So, I recently got a vogue and immediately put android cupcake on it. (great work devs btw )
So here's the problem, I cant get through the day 7 am - 12 am with light to moderate use without needing to charge.
I would like to keep 3g/background data on during this time.
Has anyone had any success having their vogue-androids last this long?
Are there any advanced power managers that allow you to change the backlight quickly and easily or allow you to turn data off during certain times? (like data off for a 1/2 hour and then data on for 1/2 hour)
Thanks,
Kevin

There's an app called "Locale" which is apparently awesome, but I haven't tried it myself. It changes settings based on your GPS location, but I'm not too sure about time of day. You may want to check that out.
As for the battery lasting that long, I dunno... I don't think I'd fall into the "light usage" category. My battery typically lasts from about 7:30am till 9 or 10pm though... I'm not too sure, I usually plug it in when I get home from work around 6.

That would need more battery, since it would need GPS.
We don't have network-based GPS yet.
I have had the same problems with battery life on my vogue even with light usage. Also I don't believe CDMA has the same issues with 3g causing higher battery usage like gsm does. I have tried widgets to quickly toggle the backlight and gps function but only saw minimal improvement. Not sure if the increased battery usage is just a fact of android or if there remain porting/performance issues still to blame.
i've got my background data set to off and i keep gps and stuff off unless i need it and i've got my email set to update every hour and i found this actually gives me better battery life than when running windows so i just went and bought an extended battery off ebay and hopefully it'll get through a complete workday(10 hrs) where as right now i'm getting between 6 and 8 depending on how much I use it.

My battery used to drain pretty rapidly.. 7am - 2pm... but now it lasts from about 7am - 6pm. I think theres a certain amount that the battery can condition itself. I've tried discharging and charging and I do believe that its helped.
Do you guys notice that battery readings are not accurate though? Apparently it has something to do with the temp. sensor in the battery not being correctly configured. For example, if my battery is at 20% and I plug it in the charge, it'll jump to 40% in a matter of 10 mins.

Togga has been replaced in Cupcake by Modem. They do the same thing, essentially. If you want to turn off your data connection, open Modem and click Disconnect.
Also, in your default.txt make sure the pm.sleep_mode setting is set to 0 for best power saving.
Lastly, update all your files to the latest. The newest rootfs.img is supposed to bring more power-saving functionality. I just installed it this morning, so I can't comment on it yet.

i checked my text and it is set to 0 already! not a good thing when it only takes 5 hours to drain 50% of my battery life. i hope this can be fixed in future builds, i may have to go back to winmo for the time being because i need my phone for work.
i really love android though!

Do you have "Use Background Data" unchecked under Settings > Data synchronization? This makes a huge difference. If you have unchecked already, I don't know what to tell you.
with the previous rootfs (just before the new one today 2009-08-04) I've been getting 10 hours with moderate usage, backround data enabled, contacts and gmail auto syncing and locale set to turn my ringer off based on location (btw, I do beleive we have agps working now). Upgrading to the newest kernel and rootfs with more improvement to see if I can get a full day as I am awefully close now.
oh, and I also have a weather widget updating every hour, pretty good battery imo.
EDIT: Tip for battery life, I have my default screen brightness set pretty low, about 30%, as this is fine for most indoor conditions. I use an app called fastbright placed conveniently on my home screen to immediately turn my screen to 100% with the click of an icon when I am outdoors. I also use locale to turn the screen all the way down to 10% when the battery is less than 10%. Both are recommended apps.
I think I was getting much better battery life before introduction of rootfs, like on the order of 4-5 hours more (running hero themed ion). Anyone else have this experience, or is it just me?

Actually yeah, I tried the latest initrd and rootfs today, but it seems like it's a bit lower than it usually is this time of day. I think the first implementation of rootfs was better than this latest over the non-rootfs versions, though. Maybe I just used it more. I kept all the same settings and usage for the day was typical.
Best option is to buy the Extended Battery from DealExtreme for $8.. search for HTC Touch S1 .. the back cover doesn't fit properly but you can always get a one that fits from ebay..
this battery lasts me thru out the day even with heavy usage.. and for $8 u can't go wrong
Today I didn't touch my phone for the first 4-5 hours of my day after charging overnight, and was down to sixty-something percent. I know that on older initrds I was doing much better than this, at least 80% at noon with no usage.
I'm wondering if optimizing memory with the new rootfs stuff has been a trade-off to poorer battery life. Since I'm using mssmison's hero themed ion which is screaming fast, I haven't noticed a difference with the root stuff and think I'm going to try switching back.
I'm switching back to the 7-30-09 initrd.gz, because that's the last one I know my battery was doing much better with and will post back after running it tomorrow.
My issue with battery life is that my phone doesn't seem to know how much battery it has left. It will be on 60 percent, I'll plug it in and 5 minutes later its fully charged.
Or after it comes off the charger overnight, it will go down to 60-50 almost immediately but stay there all day while at work with light usage. I also hate that it doesn't know when its full, I hate to overcharge the batter. So many opinions on if it damages it or not.

Well, Its normal to get hot when taking a long call.. (10 min or more), but while in standby, it should NEVER get even WARM (mine stays cold as ice ) !!!
The power drain maybe is cuz your phone is heating.. The heat expands circuits and increase the power drain.

I wouldn't rush to send it back. It all sounds normal to me.
You must remember that the batteries will take a few weeks to attain full capacity operation.
Keep them on charge as much as you can (mains or car/plane etc), don't switch off at night, don't cycle them and don't drain them excessively.
If that does not give an improvement THEN take them back.
When I first got my TD2 I was appalled at the battery life and bought a spare battery. I have never used it.
And when they get warm it shows that they are happily being used or recharged and is no cause for concern.
Hi Cairo,
First of all, sorry for my english.
In my case, I bought my TD2 this summer, & I had some of these problems with the battery.
I'll tell you my steps, perhaps it could help you, if not, you must talk with HTC support.
First, use modaco's nodata to disable HSDPA/3G, use only GSM, it's much better to save battery. the link :http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
Second: Active Sync.
You need a task manager to see notifications.
you must find one of the repllog event.
Use this http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm.
In notifications tab find "repllog AppRunAfterTimeChange" and disable it.
In my case I have disabled two events more, PushInternetScheduleTimeChanged and PushInternetScheduleTimeChanged1 and everything works fine.
After that, in process tab, if repllog appears, kill it, and in notifications tab find again the event "repllog.exe /remote /h",disable too, and use a reg editor (dot's taskmgr has one) and search in hkcu\software\microsoft\ActiveSync, find "KeepAlive" and you must change 1 to 0.
In this case, activesync will never start again, till you connect td2 to laptop or pc with activesync (it changes the value from 0 to 1).
I hope you could understand me and the info is ok for your td2.
Regards

Battery issue - Return to warranty?

Hello everyone.
I have a big issue. The battery on my phone seems to last very short.
Max 24h and I'm not talking a lot lately (using my work phone instead). Only have 20 mins of calls in two weeks.
I've disabled auto-weather updates, no emails installed, HTC Location Service is disabled basically no connection.
I've left the phone over night, charged at 100% and when I woke up it was at 78%?
I'm afraid that if it drains so fast and I'm not talking, how much will it last when I'll start using it as a phone?!
Before I take it to the shop for warranty, do you have any suggestions, tips...thoughts...anything?
I'm on:
ROM: 1.72.831.1 WWE
Radio: 2.09.51.03_2
I'm not using 3G. I'm on Edge (showing an E in the upper side of the screen).
Thank you very much for helping!
Did you really turned off 3G in optins? Turn it off.
Did you install some kind of a program that runs in the backround constantly?
Did you format your ROM and battery when you bought it? The way to do it is to fully charge your battery then fully empty it to the end and then when he is turned off charge it over night. Do it 3x like that and that should do the job.
If that dont help try to "hard reset" it and than do the "format battery" again.
Mine over night drops from 100% to 97% with the same options like yours.

I haven't formatted it 3 times. Only once. When I use task manager, no program shows as running.
How do you format the ROM and how do you really turn off 3G?
Thanks a lot!
First of all, install battclock and check the mA drainage of the battery.
You disable 3g from settings\wireless.

3G turn off
Settings -> Wireless controls -> click on the phone (on the left icon of the phone) -> scrool down and click "Band" -> Select: GSM and select: GSM(your frekvency provider)

I've left the phone over night, charged at 100% and when I woke up it was at 78%?

There are parts of my apartment where the phone cannot decide if it wants to connect 3G or HSDPA. When I leave the phone there, the battery drains much faster than if I leave it in a place where it is connected all the time only to HSDPA or connected all the time only to 3G.
So it seems like the network acquisition/switching has a greater impact on the battery than simply being connected (via either HSDPA or 3G). But I'm not an engineer, so maybe I've drawn an incorrect conclusion?
where do you check hsdpa connection? thanks

Sorry, this is one of those things that my phone just does without me understanding how it works
I'm sure some actual phone genius on here will weigh in soon...
anyone? some more suggestions?
Your battery needs at least three weeks of constant charging to establish max capacity.
Don't do anything but charge it as often as you can. Don't cycle it in any way. Don't discharge it excessively just keep it on charge as much as possible. This will maximize the capacity and give you the best battery life from Lion cells.
Turning stuff off will only lower the drain not improve your capacity. After you charge constantly then look at turning stuff off.
That's how Lion cells work best.

Prolong time between charging

Hello!
Today my battery on my Epic 4G with Froyo drained after 12 hours. And actually, I didn't do anything. I'm still new in the Android. Can you share your best practice what you are doing to prolong time between charging? What apps you are using, what you are turning off, etc.?
Thank you!
First step is to install Spare parts and figure out what is in fact draining your battery. You need to check if its running instead of sleeping when the display is off. Also check in settings under About Phone > Battery Use to see what is using the most battery.
The biggest thing I did to help my battery was killing the drm process. Also when your phone reboots put it in airplane mode for a couple seconds so your time without signal won't be 50% and killing your battery. And if you use wifi change the sleep to never. Other things I leave gps and Bluetooth off till I need them and I keep the brightness setting all the way down and I don't use live wallpaper.

I've checked the Spare Parts. 98% of running time is process called kswapd0. I don't know what is it.
What do I need to do to prevent it?

Thats a new one to me. Seems like other galaxy S phones have the same issue. No idea what causes it.
