Delete TF3D? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

I do not use TF3D, and was wondering as it takes up around 20MB of storage (i think) can you simply delete to save space and help speed up the device?
If so what files/folders do I delete without affecting other programs?

2 Options:
Disable It
Flash A New ROM

I have it disabled but it still takes upthe space on the device. Can anyone recommend a good clean basic ROM (as in no TF3D installed and really no other WM apps as well such as MP3 trimmer etc)?
Thanks

Try flashing a Naked Rom like THIS one then. You can add what you want.

First steps with a Touch Diamond 2

Hi people,
I have just got my new Touch Diamond 2 and it's beautiful. I have spent several days googling looking for the best place of expertese for tweaking and customising, and it seems this is the place. I have never owned a Windows Mobile device or a HTC before, but I'm PC savvy and I want to tweak my new phone.
Among other things, I want to:
Be sure my phone uses Wifi when available instead of contract internet
Tweak the TouchFLO home screen (including analogue clock and RSS)
Find a list of the best and/or most popular mods/software
Where do I start and what do I need!
Congratz
As I've heard and noticed from my own TD2 is that it always uses wifi over data. But if you really want to be sure you can disable Data Connection in the Communication tab whenever you want to surf.
You can also in All Settings => Personal => Buttons configure that long hold button disables Data Connection.
As for tweaking I would download Diamond Tweak and Advanced Config
http://www.touchxperience.com/en/advanced-configuration-tool/downloads.html
http://montecristoff.webs.com/diamondtweak.htm
First law of windows mobile: keep the internal disk clean!
Install every new piece of software on the memory card.
For my TD2 I got a 16Gb microSD card and started with Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3 to tweak all storage-related paths to folders I created on the memory card.
A good place to start looking for tools is freewarepocketpc.net. A lot of more than decent free applications. The ones you don't like can always be removed in settings/system/remove programs, and replaced by commercial tools.
I disagree.. I used to install everything on the external card; and found two major disadvantages:
- some app will run a lot slower!
- if you use your sd card to store music video and other stuff
you better not have to change it...
I m more inclined to install less apps that filling the memory card with it.
The main use I have for the memory card is to store backups, documents, music, and install cab files.

Yeah I saw those button settings but couldn't work out what they meant. What is this long hold button? Is it the dial button that if you hold puts it on speaker phone? And how would you configure it for disabling a data connection, I don't see and option that would allow this?
I have seen that freewarepocketpc website, and had a snoop around. I have an 8Gb card coming today (hopefully!) and I was waiting to get that to install software on it. I read that might slow down some apps, now I'm not so sure what to do. However I want to avoid installing a load of software to try it out, then uninstalling it. It is windows after all. That's why I wanted some recommended software from people on here.
Question: Will that configuration tool allow tweaking of the TouchFLO stuff? Has anyone changed the clock on the TouchFLO Home page thingy?
Thanks all for your help
You have to chose the tab "End Key" under the Button setting menu and then chose the "terminate data connection" option
Ahh I get it now, had a look at those keys thanks. Going to use Advanced Configuration Tool when I get my memory card (still not here yet!)
The best single piece of advice I can give any TD2 owner is to ditch TF3D and at least try living without it. Your rewards will be more available memory, faster operation, increased functionality, full use of applications' today screen plugins, less (or no) bugs, and the cost is it doesn't look as nice.
In a couple of months' time, WM6.5 will be out and then even the looks will be there.
After much research I have ditched TouchFLO and got SPB Mobile Shell 3. I keep hearing about bugs but I am yet to encounter one. I have to say that SPB Mobile Shell 3 is what I would have expected to have on a phone like this. TouchFLO looks good, and I have a friend that loves it, but you can't customise it very easily. Simply having the widgets in SPB Mobile SHell 3 makes it a better, mnore customisable and quicker interface.
I currently have Total Commander as an explorer replacement. I'm not sure if this is the best, but I have yet had time to do proper research. It's supposed to have a registry editor in there, but for the life of me I can't find it :/
Had some serious fun with video playback. I wanted to play full quality (not HD) dix files, DVD rips and the like. After much fun with different software I found that Coreplayer blows everything out of the water. My expectations had dropped about what I might be able to watch on my phone after having problems with other media players, but Coreplayer can play full movie DVD rips with no stuttering and it looks awesome.
Still some fun to be had tweaking, for example finding out if/how java stuff will work, trying to find something for email/sms, and some "cool" apps to impress my gran.
I'm no expert but purely from personal experience the first steps are:
1) Install Resco Explorer
http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp
2) Install HTC hotfix for Diamond 2
(http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=249&cat=0&dl_id=563)
3) Install .NET Framework 3.5 (requirement for a bunch of 3rd party software)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en
4) Install SKTools (needed for many things but especially for next step)
http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_products.html#tools
5) Use SKTools to disable ActiveSync (results in huge improvement of battery duration)
5a) Disable the repllog.exe (which is the application behind ActiveSync) associated with ""AppRunAfterTimeChange"" in Notifications Queue
Alternative way is to install Dotfred's Task manager and kill repllog.exe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3175757&postcount=50
5b) Follow the steps 1-7 in the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=288352
5c) Install eLiAs_ASyncKiller.cab
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3048077&postcount=40
6) Install HDTweak for various tweaks (eg for improvement of TouchFlo response)
7) Install sdkcerts (needed for "cosmetic" interventions eg Hall Feica fonts in TouchFlo, slpashscreens, topbar etc)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=471604
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3661976&postcount=80
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3861405&postcount=2
8) Install Diamond D3D Video drivers using the first attachment from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475493&highlight=ATI+3d+driver
Before installation download and run the fourth attachment (Lights.exe)
Install the drivers and then run Lights.exe again to see the huge improvement
9) Install G-Config (for forcing applications to go into landscape mode)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3848546&postcount=3
10) Enjoy your Topaz
P.S.: Backup your Contacts, Calendar etc frequently

I have the Diamond2 as well... wouldn't I want to install 'Diamond Tweak' instead of 'HD Tweak'? Are they essentially the same thing, or does HD Tweak offer more functionality for the Diamond2?

Program Memory

I am fairly new to this forum and I am sure this has been explain on here once before. But I though this might be a little easier than searching through countless pages of posts. I want to know if there is a way to clear up the program memory. If I could I would like to be able to delete the Office mobile stuff if that would help. Dont see a need for it since I work on macs mostly. Of if there is way to trim it down. At the moment my program memory is 43.87 MB and it says 40.91MB is in use but I only have window media running and only 3MB available. Is there something I can do. What is taking up all memory. Even after a soft reset. The most I have ever seen it go up to is like 14MB and that is just for a while then it begins to rundown. Thanks for you help in advanced.

You would have to flash a ROM without Office Mobile. Look on The Wingster (http://thewingster.com/roms.aspx) and find a ROM that doesn't include Office Mobile. I tell you if it doesn't include it, so it should be fairly easy to identify that.
But going into the registry wouldn't be where you'd delete that stuff. You'd find it in the file explorer, \Windows. I'm not sure if you can delete those files though. I'd just flash one of the numerous ROM's that doesn't include Office Mobile, there's many of them.
Office Mobile is in most cases (there are CABs out there, so that you can install it on stirage card) in the ROM and can't be deleted in an easy way. The File Explorer doesn't delete it. Midnight Commander can delete files, which are in the Main ROM, but only use if you know what you're doing! This program can delete all files - important system files, too!
The most easy way is, as ace already said, to flash a rom without Office Mobile. But be careful and read a lot before you flash a new rom! A broken flash may cause a broken phone!
That is one of my biggest fears is bricking my phone and not being able to bring it back. I am currently running SPB Mobile 3.0 and I like that a lot. That is what I would like to run permanently. Maybe when i upgrade or buy a new phone I will practice on my old wing. Thanks guys for the info!
program mem == application mem
storage mem == files on your device
application mem is used by programming which are running nothing else
storage mem is used by files stored on your device
freeing up app mem don't give more storage and virsa versa

Wife's new Tilt2

Hello everyone.
My wife recently picked up a Tilt2 and is migrating from her Palm TX.
She is looking for a replacement for Pocket Money, Pocket Quicken, and something else I've forgotten the name of but she's looking at SPB Pocket Plus, Pocket Finance Diary lite (from mobile9.com), and CryptoWallet, none of which did I find listed in Apps thread.
If anyone has used these apps are they not worth the cost? Are there any simular apps that perform better for less or free?
For games she is looking at Happy Lines, Uno (it is in the Apps list), and Matching Hearts; and would love other recommendations for any Bejeweled-like games. She also would like a music player which has a random play feature. I see several listed in the Apps thread but didnt research enough yet to see which has that.
Thanks for any and all help or comments.

Hey Popa, welcome to this corner of the forums
The only question you asked that I can help with is the media player..I can tell you that the built-in HTC music player has a random play option, and it's a nice simple option if she doesn't need much flexibility. However, most any of the commonly used 3rd-party players (coreplayer, TCPMP, nitrogen, etc) certainly can do that as well, so you just have to gauge what else is important in a media player for her. WMP is also built-in of course, and also not half-bad for basic use.
One more thing to help you out...I'd highly recommend running the two cabs I've attached on her new phone. They change some settings in window's memory management that free up memory much faster when apps and processes are done using it...they'll save you a lot of headache when she would have come to you complaining because her new toy is running like molasses (which could still happen...keeping this phone running smoothly especially regarding memory can be a real challenge). The 3rd cab is up to you, but it's a very helpful utility written just for the Tilt2 called CrudScraper that lets you rip out a bunch of the stock apps (only the ones you choose) and crap that AT&T was nice enough to load it up with for you. It's not a cab though, just run the .exe from her SD card and it's self-explanatory from there. Let us know if you need instructions on running the cabs too.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll get some answers to your other questions soon...but if not, you might want to post in the general windows section of the xda forum since most of those programs will work on a lot more models than just the TP2, and you might get more exposure and response that way
SPB Pocket Plus works fine and syncs with Money. I liked the old money client you used to get better but it gets the job done.

Hmm, are you sure you're not confusing Pocket Plus with something else (e.g. SPB Finance)? Pocket Plus is more of a system utility, that doesn't sync with anything. Besides, not all features of Pocket Plus are compatible with WM6.5, so that's something else to take into account.

Install them both to the device, they're very small, and then once you do that you can delete the cab if you want...though I recommend keeping a copy on the SD card of any cabs that you use, so you can reapply them easily if you ever hard-reset. These automatically run in the background once installed, no need to manually start anything.

I have been running these cabs for a few weeks now. it seems they stop working after a while. I have noticed my mem usage was in 65-70% again and even after a soft reset, stil up there. Only thing that works is reinstalling the SSK TP2 cab then miraculously back down to 49%. Am i missing something on keeping these running in the bckgrnd? i mean i dont mind reinstalling but feel kinda silly doing it over and over.

[SOLVED] Does cooking in applications slowly slow down your ROM?

Hi
Another quick question by me... Lol, as the title says.
Thanks, again
Depends on the application. Manila sure will since it's basically always running and also adds tons of files to your file system, but other apps will not unless you are running the app actively. Ultimately, the fewer files you have in your rom, the faster it will generally perform. A stripped down rom will be faster than a bloated rom any day (all other factors being equal). Things like HTC Phone Canvas will eat up about 10MB of ram, which will also slow your device, so you could go with the WM stock dialer, but then you lose features. So, you may have to decide which is more important, features or speed.

Thanks mate That's what I was looking for.
And sure QuePPC
thanks a lot buddy
I disagree here a little.
Cooking in applications doesn't slow down the rom.
It depends on system resources the application is using.
A installed cab after is using system recources as well.
Manila is a bad example to my opinion as it's actually a system itself if you know what I mean.
I don't think lighter roms per definition will perform faster but it's the choice of applications that make the rom fast.

I agree with leo here. A bloated ROM will not outperform a light ROM "any day". A bloated ROM with a bunch of services or DLLs that are always loaded in RAM, will generally speaking, perform slower, but THAT's not always the case.

My benchmark testing of bloated roms vs stripped roms (all other factors being equal) show that bloated roms do in fact benchmark with lower scores than stripped roms. Of course there is a difference between benchmark tests and real world application.

That was true with older devices. I'm not so sure that applies to current, modern devices which we cook for. No doubt, bepe is a smart guy, but... all the programmers I've met in my life don't really have a clue about much of anything, BUT what they do... > programming. Da_G would be one exception to that, but they're few and far between.
If I'm not mistaking cooking in a application means there's more available ram because the application is already preserved in rom.
Installing a cab after means it will use more mem as it's loaded completely in ram.
The more ram you use the slower the device.
Cooking in a application in rom shouldn't affect the speed as long as it doesn't use system recources (running the app, ram).
Probably a benchmark right after flash will tell you that the light rom is faster but what about if you start using the rom and a user needs to install cabs because of the apps he's missing?
So on the long therm a 'bloated' rom will gain more speed then the light rom because the apps are already in rom.
Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I always taught about it.
It seems to me that there are two ways to view the question posed by the OP. One is the question of whether cooking in applications slows down the rom vs installing the same applications via cab. The other is whether cooking in more applications slows down the rom assuming that you never cab install the application post flash.
In regards to the question of cooking in vs cab install, I'm not sure why you would think that cab installing would somehow permanently take up ram space, unless by "ram" you're referring to storage space. But consider the fact that with many applications you have quite a bit of initflashfiles.dat code to go along with it. Take one of the most commonly cooked in applications in roms today, Opera Mobile -- here's what my initflashfiles.dat for Opera looks like these days:

So, what does this mean? It means that for every line of code, you have double the files that are needed to actually run this application. What's going on here is that every files gets put in the windows folder and is also copied to the designation specified in the code, which is where it is actually used. There files are in most cases not ever used at all in the windows folder, but there are there nonetheless. I guess a really slick chef would write a provxml that would delete all the duplicates in windows for a really slim rom (that would be a neat trick).
When you cab install these same applications, the files are installed directly the the designated folders, and you don't get duplicate files put in the windows folder like when you cook them in.
I know, you're gonna say "so ok maybe you have some extra files, who cares?" Well, a few extra files are cool but they really do start to add up over time. Take the Manila packages for example. I think that most Manila 2.5 these days is typically over 3000 files. When your device has to run an app that resides in the windows folder, it has to search through all the files that are in the windows folder to find the needed file(s). The more files in the windows folder, the longer it takes to find and load the desired file = fact. How much longer does it take is the real question. Is it something that we can actually perceive, or can it only be found through benchmarking. The point can easily be proven/disproven by any competent chef by doing a Manila build, then disable manila and benchmark. Next build an identical rom without manila and benchmark that rom. I can pretty much guarantee that the rom without manila will out perform the rom that includes manila, even with manila disabled.
The other thing to consider with cab installs vs cooking apps, is that many apps have dll and exe files as modules natively, and when these modules are cooked in, they are loaded into the xip, which obviously occupies xip space and can potentially eat up ram. When you cab install apps, the modules are converted to files in the cab installer, and do not occupy the same xip space. Typically more space in the xip = faster processing and more available ram.
Firstly, awesome replies. Oh and to make my original post more specific, I was basically asking: "Do more files in the ROM make it slower?" But I'm glad that there were other answers

When do modules go into RAM? And if lots of modules are cooked in, but none to Slot 0, will it still affect overall performance negatively? I remember Da_G saying that with new windows 6.5, we have more freedom when using modules.

It can't be done. Those files are in ROM. The files aren't duplicated they are linked. So there is no a waste of space, only you get a really crowded windows folder.

When you install an application it goes to the "writable part of imgfs" kindof, it is not ram. That was in 2003 era

They appear to be duplicated to me, unless I'm missing something. Look at your opera skin in the Opera9/profile/skin folder. It is the exact same size as the same file in the windows folder.
Okay so atleast that's cleared up...
How exactly do you delete files with a .provxml's? Is it any different to just going and deleting a file with Total Commander? 'Cause when I tried that it didn't work, even after removing system attributes and what not..
Can you remove files from Windows dir?

The only way to get rid of files cooked into windows is with Task 29.

We all know we cant.. do that, some apps lets you overwrite some files... and some apps lets you delete some files, i guess is something related to attribs like "system file" or "read only" i dont know exactly.

or... flash your device... and unplug it from the pc when the upgrade is in any percentage of progress
I guess this guy is asking the same as me...
Wich Programs use the files in Programfiles directory... and wich programs use the windows path files?
I know all the standalone exe programs can read or are compiled to read files directly from Windows\ and some other have in the registry the path to program files folder and of course subfolders, or simply hardcoded in exe to read in program files.
If you use app.dat you will see that you have the exact files into program files\ and in windows... so yes! is a waste of storage to have them but... most of the programs use that path to work.
Nope I do think they are in ROM and not in RAM so Mac_es is right there are no duplicates.

need some help uninstalling apps

hi!
i have been trolling around xda for weeks and finally here is my first post..
im having some problems getting rid of the software that came bundled with the tmous hd2. when i go to settings(sense)->applications->remove programs, i see JUST the b&n ereader listed there.
i seem to have irretrievably lost my sd card and i suspect some of the bundled software was preinstalled on the sd card itself. i was able to spot the rest (like slacker, telenav, etc.) in the program files of my device memory.
the problems are that:
1) the start menu is still cluttered with icons of apps that dont exist (due to lost sd card). nothing happens when i run them.
2) even the apps that do exist (like telenav - installed on my device memory), i dont know how to uninstall.
i really need some way to clean up my phone... any way to solve the above problems?
thanks!
p.s.:
i suspect that the b&n ereader is listed in 'remove programs' because i ran that software and updated it over wifi - which led to a fresh install.
my rom is 2.13 if thats of any use...
The thorough way is to use a cooked ROM. But if you don't want to go that way, you can go though and comb through the phone memory>windows and the start menu folders and delete stuff that belong to the apps (but be careful about what you delete, you don't want to delete important system stuff)

i thought of doing that. but drawing a parallel from windows (PC), what you are suggesting is that i should delete all program folders & shortcuts manually instead of using the control panel->add/remove option.
but that is sure to leave behind orphaned registry entries, dlls etc. just like in windows (PC)? and any windows(PC) user knows that that isnt a very pretty way of doing things...

it will leave the registry entries. I have made a lite rom that you can use if you don't want any traces of the programs on your device. look in my signature
Silenced, the catch is that it's not possible to remove apps that are baked into the stock ROM through any regular means (i.e. the add/remove dialog). In your case the best thing is to just clean up + organize your /windows/start menu folder...you can delete or move any of the ".lnk" files in there as they're just shortcuts to the same thing in the /windows folder. Just remember that if you move something that's attached to a quicklink on your home tab, you'll have to dump the quicklink and recreate it after moving the .lnk file.

hmm you're right... i remember that even a hard reset i did yesterday didnt change the state of these apps.
apps stored in rom arent going to make any difference to the phone's performance anyway. so ill just follow the cleanup method you all suggest for now... i have had this phone for just about 24 hours now. its my first killer phone (i upgraded from nokia e65) and am in no state of mind to start flashing cooked roms yet
i wonder if there are any registry cleaners for windows CE.
thanks all!

Yes, MemMaid has a registry cleaning function/option...there may be others, but that's the one I know.
As for all the stuff you'll need to learn for your HD2, make sure you read the guide below (if you haven't already):
