I dont know if this has been brought up. But I dont have a data plan but I would like to have push mail which I know is not possible with Wifi. As far as I know, push mail sends a message to the phone and tells it to connect to server to DL message.
Is there any way to intercept that message and have Wifi turn on to download the message?

If you turn on the wifi before launching the email doesn't it use it instead? this does not solve the problem as you mentioned but at least you get the email via wifi...
pushmail and wifi is just a bad idea. pushmail only works properly with an "always on" connection. wifi sucks way too much power and i doubt and device can stay on for more than 6 hours. also wifi it turned off as soon as the device goes into sleep mode to save power
that said, i game across cooked roms in the past that had pushmail enabled on wifi

After upgrading my SPVM3000 to ROM 2.16.1.3 FRE (Orange), I set up a push email account at 4smartphone and all work fine.
But while Push Email is activated, if I activate WiFi and browse internet with PIE, Wizard freeze as soon as the first page is dowloaded.
If I switch Push Email and Edge connection off in Comm Manager before switching on WiFi, I can browse internet without problem.
Have anybody noticed/resolved this problem ?
Do I have to think I'm the only one with this problem ?
I believe your problem is because push email always uses the GPRS connection regardless of the state of wiFi. When WiFi is activated and the push email heartbeat kicks in, Gprs is brought back up and your WiFi connection is trashed. YMMV on the end results I guess. On mine, PIE can't connect.
This is a bug IMO but I understand the issue. Consquently, you must disable push email in connection manager before enabling WiFi. Fortunately, the two buttons are right next to each other
I'm a little surprise that it's a bug, as nobody speak about it in this great forum.
Problem with disabling push mail is that if you want to not have push mail during the night for exemple, when enabling push mail this is lost and push mail is always on at all hours.
Other thing is, I'm using VJVolubilis to toggle WiFi (via a hard button) and not connection manager.
I suspect more a bad parameter somewhere...

hmmm... your WiFi handler most likely explains your lockup complaint that I don't experience. Believe me, the GPRS downgrade caused by the push email heartbeat is a bug. However, it's very possible that this hasn't been explored much here due to the low number of AKU2 upgraders who also run push email. Also, my experience shows that sometimes you don't even notice that the WiFi connection "downgrades" to GPRS when the heartbeat kicks in again. This because the wifi tower icon is still shown and the only real way to spot it is to run a thruput test like www.2wire.com.
M$ really needs to make the direct push driver WiFi aware, however there may be something to do with the conflicting requirement to leave our Wizards in standby mode during email reception that makes this a difficult feat. Perhaps a better (read "more possible") implementation would be for it to open a seperate hidden GPRS connection that's not tied to your ISP or Work network connection settings.

I have the same problem. I am running 2.17.7.2 WWE, 2/10/06, 02.07.10, 413.1.03.
Can anyone confirm that they are able to use GPRS/WiFi simultaneously with no issues on any ROM? Preferrably, with Direct Push enabled.

Hello there folks,
After much reconfiguring of our exchange server, i have push email working!
However, i have found that occasionally when WiFi is on, the phone will still sometimes try to establish a GPRS data connection.
Does anyone know of a way to stop it doing this? I would prefer WiFi to be the prefered data path.
Any help would be appreciated!

push mail doesn't work over wifi. You need to keep the GPRS connected for this. You can still activesync over Wifi, but push mail is depending on a cellular network.

That doesn't make sense to me. Push should work better over WiFi.
Although I don't know for sure, I wonder if the fact your GPRS IP address and WiFi one will necessarily be different makes the Wizard hop back onto GPRS if that's where the push session was established.
If you cancel push, then establish WiFi and then re-establish push, does it still try jump to GPRS?
Out of interest, what tweaking did you have to do to the server? Our IS guys applied the service pack, and for a brief period, I tested push and it worked, now it seems to have stopped working. I can establish the session, but nothing gets "pushed". If I log in to Outlook, OWA and push, I can see my test messages land on the first two, but nothing on the Wizard until I manually sync it...

I'm not bothered by the fact that DP tried to re-establish my GPRS connection as much as the 8125 locking up whenever I enable WiFi while already in Direct Push mode. If I can figure out why that happens and stop it I can stop messing with my Wizard and actually enjoy it more.
M$ says that they can't support direct push over WiFi because the device turns off WiFi when in powersave mode which disables direct push.
I thought that was a lame reason and told them that at MEDC. We should be allowed to make that decision and direct push should adapt to whatever network connection we're using IMO.
This is not an issue of whether Direct Push should work over WiFi, this is an issue of not being able to use the device at all when WiFi is enabled while Direct Push is enabled.
If Direct Push wants to use a GPRS connection, fine, I don't mind. But I should be able to enable WiFi as well with no consequences, and Direct Push can still use the GPRS connection while the WiFi radio is on.
I have successfully tested this and it works. I was able to send my device an e-mail and have it notify me while WiFi is on, and when I browse the internet it uses the WiFi connection, not the GPRS one. But after a while of having both connections enabled, through some kind of bug or glitch the device will slow down till it eventually comes to a screeching halt.
There is no way that this is like this by design. If you can't enable WiFi with Direct Push enabled, then the system should force you to disable Direct Push before enabling WiFi or vice versa. But I believe it's a bug because even the WiFi icon has the ActiveSync animated connection when both connections are enabled, which leads me to believe that Microsoft had anticipated a WiFi connection being active while Direct Push is doing its business over GPRS.
Now, if you could please give all of that to MS, and maybe get some kind of reply I would be forever in your debt!

Prob a silly question, but once the phone goes into standby (screen turns off), I take it the Wi-Fi connection is broken ?
Asking in case of push mails, because I do not get anything when in standby I take it that because Wi-Fi is also down.
Note - Just trying not to use GPRS, 3G when at home.
Another question does anyone know what the Wi-Fi power does, best battery or best performance other then what it says how is it doing that ?
Yep, Wifi is broken when your phone is in standby.
And Pushmail only works with GPRS and not with Wifi as far as I know.

To my amazement active sync works when your device is in standby and WLAN is enabled.
I use it now on the office and at home to receive my e-mail.
But to get it working properly you will have to disable "when new items arrive".
My device sync's every 5 minutes and notifies me when there is a new message.

I have a new AT&T Pure with an exchange email address set up to receive emails as they arrive. If the phone is not in standby mode the emails come in without a problem at the same time I receive them in Outlook. Once the phone is in standby mode (screen turns off) emails come in sporadically or not at all until I wake the phone up. If I just set it to dim and not turn screen off I am fine. Is anyone else having this issue?
I've found ActiveSync on my Touch Diamond2 very unreliable. It will work for a while but repllog.exe crashes at some point, usually overnight. Only fix is to restart the phone or manually kill the task - it's often doesn't respond to shutdown (indicating it's crashed) and has to be manually ended. Doing a sync immediately always works.
I'm hoping that they've fix this bug in WM 6.5...

This is a brand new phone with WM 6.5. Everything works finew when phone is not in standby. Once in standby emails don't come in when they should.

You mean by standby, not cable/activesync attached?
I'm still wondering about gmail push, I set everything up as said, but when I'm cabled to my work computer, I don't get gmail.
I have to disconnect and then get gmail push. **sigh**
Ahh, isn't that a setting on ActiveSync? Something about allowing internet connection when docked. I think when a WM is connected via ActiveSync, the internet connection goes through your PC which sometimes is blocked.

No, I unchecked that, same result, even after powering off/on. I think that option is misleading
some thoughts and my experience...
Do you expect emails to arrive over wifi, or gprs, The behavior is different by design.
As they arrive, in schedule settings for example only works as most people expected over gprs.( this is also called microsoft direct push) and can be toggled on/off in settings tab on most htc phones.
this also requires a constant open data connection over gprs. the phone will try to open it for you if you enable direct push option.
its also important that the carrier supports long http requests over grps for direct push to work correctly.(this is why gprs need to be open all the time)
if you deactivate the gprs-data connection, direct push will fail until it succeds a long http to the eas server again.(exchange active sync)
when i use direct push option over gprs, emails always arrive instantly (within a few sec.) to my phone regardless of standby or awake. 98% of the time anyway...
Now i have set mine to sync over wifi. however not pushed to my phone as it only works over gprs.i usually set schedule to 5 min.
if set direct push/as arrive over wifi the schedule seems to change depending on how often emails arrive. the polls seemes to be longer and longer apart if mailbox is idle. schedule a bit unclear...
i figured this out by setting a constant ping from pc to the phone and watched the response in standby mode.( wifi not set to always on even in standby) so i got response time out most of the time.
i noticed that after a certain time the phone began to respond to ping for a few seconds( active sync activated wifi in standby to check email according to my setting in schedule and then deactivated it).
if i had unread emails in my exchange mailbox they arrived in the phone as well.
i also read a paper where the direct push schedule where explained by microsoft. it is constructed that way to save as much bandwidh as possible,
i have based this on my observations only.
it would be nice if someone could find a technical paper explaining this further.
tests was done on htc p3600 and stock topaz. wm 6.1
i will do tests again on the 6.5 rom as they come online.

Phone is not docked nor am I connected with wifi. Just a GPRS connection. What I mean by standby is that I have the setting enabled to turn off screen after 1 minute.
I have no problem with push email from my exchange server. Remember Push email only works with cell data connection as pointed out. And if you establish ActiveSync connection with a desktop PC, it will be auto-disable and changed to polling instead regardless if you keep the data connection open or not.
I have never connected this phone to a PC.
exchange active sync and wifi
i previously had a TYTNii (Kaiser) which would exchange sync through my home and office wifi (over GPRS) when wifi was available and connected.... However on my Topaz i am unable to exchange sync through wifi when connected for some reason. it will only work through phone connection with wifi off. It appears there are additional connection settings with this WM6.1 device... (priority settings for one connection type over another) but im not sure how to set this up... Help on getting exchange sync working via wifi would be appreciated thanks..
I'm having a problem. My university wifi often requires me to use a browser before I can actually use the internet. The problem is that my email and text messages rely on the internet.
Is there any way to shut down wifi after some minutes if there is no internet connection? I really like my battery life when wifi is on, as opposed to always having 3g on.
Why would text messages rely on Wifi? (assuming you are using SMS through provider). You can turn 3G off and then use the notification power controls to turn wifi off quickly.

Well when wifi is on it shuts off 3g and android uses data connection to get emails and MMS. Regular text dont use the data connection I guess. I have noticed I cannot recieve MMS when im on wifi as well. Any wifi

Not sure about that option, but you sure can shut down Wifi, when the phone goes into stand by.
Settings >> Wireless & Network >> Wifi Settings >> Click on Menu & select Advanced >> Wifi Sleep Policy. Select when Screen turns off.
I would also mention, any type of wifi setup that requires you to login via the browser will not be a good option. As soon as the phone puts wifi to sleep, you logout, so when it wakes up, wifi might be connected, but that doesn't mean you get past the login page. Luckily at my university, there is a special wifi for faculty/staff that doesn't have that page like it does for students/guests.
I use Google voice for everything so my text messages rely on the internet. Disconecting wifi during sleep would solve my problem, but now I'm relying Solely on wifi since I switched to the Samsung tab data only plan, which oddly enough doesn't work on android phones.
