Prep for sale - G1 General

I want to prep my jf 1.51 g1 for sale. I want it to stay rooted and keep the apps to sd that i have on it. How would i go about prepping the phone. If i just perform a wipe, will it still have root?
and just in case your wondering why i want to sell my g1, i received a promo at work and having a blackberry is very very necessary. I'm looking at the 8900.
Thanks for the help guys.

PM sent. I'm interested in buying.

How much? I am looking for a DEV phone. One i can plan around with and not **** up my main G1.

here is my craiglist ad with pics so you guys can see
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/mob/1280468631.html

Where did you get the car mount?

just to let you know, Craigslist supports HTML not forum codes BB codes you are using. Use the HTML code Photobucket provides you instead.

Thanks for the html advice
I made the changes. the car mount is not specifically made for the g1 but after a month of searching, it was the best mount i found. The sides are soft so the phone is not scratched. I'm selling everything for 150 dollars.

Opinion on selling rooted G1 - Quick Qs

I'm gonna be selling a rooted White G1 probably on ebay soon. (Got a newer Black one on its way) I just wondered whether you think I'd be better reverting it back to stock to sell or listing it as rooted/jailbroken. I've no other big mods on it like themes, just root and some cache's put onto the SD Card.
Would you be more inclined to buy a ready rooted G1, or would you rather buy stock and do the rooting yourself? Just wondering what people's opinions are.
Thanks - Daisy xx
i'm guessing you could probably get a little more for a rooted phone, as there are a lot of lazy people out there who can't be bothered finding out how to do it.
i remember people were buying jailbroken Iphones for stupid amounts when it was first done. do some research on ebay and see whats selling for more
oh, and be sure to put whether it's a UK, American or Developer firmware.
thinking about it, if you flash the ADP1.1 (developer) firmware you'll probably get more because it sounds more impressive
I've not put ADP 1 on it ecause of the glitch with phone numbers, and i'll probably be selling UK only . Will have a check on the bay. When I searched recently tho, there were plenty of G1's for sale but exactly none actually mentioning being rooted.
We'll see Ta for that xxx
If you do sell to the U.S., put the RC30 on there so it has MSN and Yahoo messenger.
I think you should remove the cache from the SD unless you plan to include the SD already set up with ext2 partition on it, and explain to people on the auction what it is so that they won't be confused about the size missing.
Ya I likely would remove the Cache to SD anyway as it tends to reset itself when you wipe. It's not currently got an EXT2 partition anyway, as you don't need that to pop the cache's on the SD Card, so no size is missing from the SD card.
I'll probably list it (and leave it) rooted with as much info as I can about that, and see what happens, as the fone behaves perfectly normally even if someone who didn't need root bought it. Then if i don't sell it I'll consider returning it to stock state.
Ta for the help and I'll let folks on here know when its listed in case anyone is interested (I can format an EXT2 partition though, ready for saving Apps to SD Card if anyone wanted that)
Dais xxx
yea get rid of the cache to the SD. Other than that people pay more for a modded electronic hardware. Original Xbox? Xbox360s, Wii's (all consoles pretty much) and the wing i remember selling very well compared to others. With a higher profit from it if it werent. gl
Why not leave it rooted - so it sounds more exotic - but give the option to revert to a standard build if buyer requires? That way everyone's a winner!

Hi Daisy,
How much do you want to sell it for? Send me a PM.
Regards, Minty (UK)

I'll list this on ebay (Still rooted but with a full data wipe and no cache's on SD card ) sometime this evening with a Buy It Now of £250 plus £6 Special Delivery so feel free to nip over and splash out (Includes 8GB sd card too!!)
Daisy xx
EDIT - ebay link here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290294087153 - Item number 290294087153
Truthfully I would not sell it rooted. Here is why.
Some one who wants to buy an already rooted phone because they don't want to learn how is not going to know how to update it. If that is the case they will be stuck on rooted rc30. I rooted my friends g1 but now he is dependent on me to update it for him everytime there is an update. I would think you would get a lot more money if its unlocked. IMHO.
That is a fair point, actually. I've modified my ebay listing a little, and will see if it gets a decent price, if not I'll revert to stock and sell as such I do figure that if they are not techy, they likely won't bid and be put off by the fact I've said it needs some Knowledge to update.
Regards, Daisy xx
I just sold my white G1 on ebay for £220 plus p&p. I left JF1.3 on there, and only had the 2gb SD card.
Mine was unlocked too.... so at £240 you should get a buyer.

What should I do?

i've been thinking of getting a Vogue for about $190 (is that a good price or can i get it cheaper?) so i can use Android. I currently have the Dare which sucks and its bugging out on me. I have been lurking and reading a lot of posts here to educate myself but i have a kind of network question...If and when i buy the Vogue i would have to upgrade my plan to include email and such on it which is an extra $15 a month, which adds up after a while. I can can talk the reps into not activating the email portion (yes they can do it and have before), but will the gmail app be usable on android??

Firstly, the HTC Vogue is currently going for about $50 bucks - whomever is selling you one for $190 is really REALLY liking your naivete
As for GMail app - its web based so you can access your mail as long as you have some data plan to access the internet
Detroit Doug
where can you find em for $50? (the verizon version)
I would say check ebay, but if you are planning on spending around $200 i say just wait a couple more days for the Diamond to come out.
not only best to wait and get your money worth, but also as long as your going to be getting a CDMA device dont worry about it being Sprint/Verizon or whomever, once unlocked you can use just about any service at worse you may have to install whats referred to as a carrier .cab (simple click, wait for install to complete, done)
Detroit Doug
for verizon
u can use the phone w/o data plan if u want. it is has numerous capabilities. if you need data you can add that as part of your plan. you can use texting plans also for texting. but if you want to send and recieve picts or flix you have to pay data. the verizon phones cases have a history of cracking. i guess the diamond is about to come out on verizon from the previous post. i would compare specs with the voque or "touch". the touch does not have wifi or g accelerator. the gps is locked on the touch by the verizon folks but the kind folks here and at ppg have ways around that.
so can i get full android functionality on the diamond?

I imagine you should be able to, I would research the Android threads as well as the Android help desk thread here and also review the diamond threads for anything related to Android first before making any purchases
Orignal Android was designed on the HTC Vogue, one of the reasons it came out and was ready to rock when it hit the forums as it did and just so your clear, Android is a linux shell, it wont replace the WinMO operating system, you just click on the haret.exe and it will boot up into a linux shell/os (unless there is a ROM out to flash the phone over to Android fully - I havent kept up on Android all that much to search for it LOL)
Detroit Doug
i know it only runs on top but it works very well on the vogue as an everyday OS which is what i want on the diamond...i have looked into it further and apparently development is slow. as far as i know right now they dont even have data, voice, or sound working. thank you for your help

I have run it alot on my vogue a while ago, while impressed I wouldnt want the extra steps for day to day use with restarts of the phone and all
As for data, it does work, you just have to start IE, Opera, whatever and get a data connection before starting Android and you can browse all day
Sound was working last I knew (video/music)
As far as development though, Im not surprised its slow, its linux after all, not alot of app writers for linux let alone android porting to a winmo device especially when windows development can be hard enough to get right (Windows ME and Microsoft BOB anyone?? LOL)
Basically it boils down to if you want a phone, get a phone and get one that YOU want that will do what YOU want it to do, if its as a phone with data, internet, text your choices are wide open, if it is something with Android (which really at this point is a shiney new toy thing although usable somewhat for day to day) then pick up a Vogue or Diamond/Touch Pro and be ready to play with it and do alot of work to make functional - Just my opinion -YMMV
Detroit Doug
o ok then...do you know of any place that consistently updates progress on the development of this? everywhere i looked stopped updating in january some time...
I'd check with your carrier first before using another carriers phone. I know for a fact that Bell Mobility WILL NOT activate foreign phones.
I've been watching ebay for a Bell touch and the best ive seen is about $150... not much cheaper than buying a new one.. (a hundred bucks or so, but new is nice)
GG
the problem with that is i don't want to renew my contract (which enables the discount) so i am going to get one off of ebay and Verizon's open phone policy works perfectly for sprint phones that verizon also carries
well my DARE is crapping out and i have decided to go ahead and get a Vogue for under $100 and wait for the Pre to hit Verizon. i will throw money at that and be happy

[Q] HD2 - which version to get?

I'm finally thinking of getting a smart phone to replace my X51v and Sony-Ericsson flip phone combo.
I'm currently on T-Mobile in the Atlanta area, and am thinking about a HD2.
It's a WinMO 6.5 phone, so all the apps that I'm used to, including my I-Go GPS, will run on it. I'm very familiar with WM6.5 since it has been running on my X51v since Lenny came out with a cooked ROM.
However, TMOUS is not selling this phone anymore. So, it looks like I have to go the eBay route. And, there are 2 possibilities - the T-Mobile version and the international (Leo) version.
1) Can anyone offer good reasons to go with one version or the other. Just wondering if the Leo will work with TMOUS 4G,or do I need the TMo version of the phone for this.
2) I also have a plan that they don't offer anymore -"T-Zone Talk & Text Nationwide" that I got when the SE T68i came out in 2002. It works with tethering and with pretty much unlimited browsing on my phone, will it work with the HD2? Or, will I need to change plans.
Thanks for any insight.
Rob

both will come with a good warranty service
Thanks!
The T-Mobile site says "Out of Stock", which is why I started this thread. I'm thinking they are phasing them out for the HD7.
I'll check out the other site you listed. Also, Walmart and Amazon show them in stock. And, Amazon sells both versions: the T-Mobile and the International.

I was in our local Tmobile yesterday and they had one on display still but you are probably right. There is no reason for them to keep them around if they want to sell HD7's. they were listed as 99 bucks with a two year contract.
In order to get 4G on T-Mobile US you MUST have the TMO US version of the HD2, international versions will not get 3G or 4G, only EDGE speeds.

I just got 2 new HD2s at the T-Mobile store off of Dallas Highway (120) and Barrett a week ago.
They told me that they are phasing out the HD2 and replacing it with the HD7. They still may have some in stock in the store...I don't know.
I went to the store because after I placed the online order they told me they were on backorder....I went to the store and got my phones, but it looks like they are still shipping out the ones from the online order as well....So I will have a few extra. I was going to send them back, but I'll sell you one for whatever it costs me to keep it. I can meet in the Douglasville or Dallas area. e-mail me at [email protected] if you're interested. I get e-mails right away.

I got mine for free over the black friday weekend ^_^. Online deal only but the guy in the store matched the online deal for me.
Try Walmart
I got mine a few months ago from Walmart.com and saved a lot. You might find it even cheaper now in the store IF they still have any. Try that before you go the eBay route. You want a new, clean phone if you can get it. Unlike a lot of others, my HD2 has worked fine from Day 1. Like you, I wanted to replace my old Dell X51v and old Nokia phone. I have a lot of apps that I couldn't find good replacements for in Android or iOS, so I wanted to stay with WM6x for a while longer. I have not found any of my old apps that do not work, although some are clearly meant for stylus use and a little hard to use with fingers.
I will suggest this: if it works, don't make any changes other than loading your applications. Mine is still the same OS version it came with. I just put the default task manager as a quick link on the main screen so I can shut down apps that don't have their own Exit method. In the Start menu folder, I created some sub-folders to organize my app shortcuts. That way I can have all my apps only a couple of taps away (Start/folder/application shortcut). I don't have to do a lot of scrolling to get to the apps I use the most.
I have had no problem with T-Mobile in my area. (However, even though my area is supposed to have the higher speed service, I don't see it in my downloads.)
If you can get an HD2 you will have most likely the last WM6x device. It is the end of the line.
Good luck.

[Q] questions about streak

i am thinking about purchasing a dell streak here in the u.s from best buy and on att, i have allways had windows mobile phones (8125 , tilt and fuze) have flashed so many roms on those i cant even count them but as far as android goes i am dumb as of now about the os. if i get a locked us streak can i put froyo 2.2 easily on it? it comes with 1.6 and i want flash support. also i dont want to wait for the bloated att rom upgrade so will a uk rom work? last is i have a grandfathered medianet data plan for many years since my 8125 for $19.95 unlimited but best buy is saying that on the streak i will loose that and am forced to get a 2gig for $30 because the streak is a smartphone and my fuze is not? i asked them if a puchased an unlocked streak from ebay if i could just put in my sim and not change my contract and they said it would not work. are they full of it.
sorry for all the questions but i dont want to srew up and be stuck with a phone that i cant upgrade roms on and a contract that will cost me for 2 years
Yes you can load up a different rom...I went to best Buy and bought my Streak, and I had it hacked before I even put my sim card in it...
BUUUUTTT, your old Media Net package is another matter....if you buy your phone from Best Buy ON CONTRACT, they will screw up your account. Off contract or off Ebay or CraigsList, you will be fine just swapping your sim...
*and the fact that they don't consider the Fuze a "smartphone" just kinda proves the point that they will screw up your account 3 ways: fast, soon, and in a hurry--jus sayin
thanks for the info, i realy want this phone but the contract change sucks, i looked at my past data history on my fuze and i stream a lot of tv from orb to my phone and i was not close to the 2 gig mark but i like to be safe with an unlimited plan, you said you purchased yours from best buy? did you have to change your plan at all?
I came out of an iPhone earlier in the summer, so I was "grandfathered" on the unlimited plans which are not offered anymore. Yes, Best Buy did change my plan...but thankfully, I was able to call right back in and get things fixed...actually, they only changed me from the UNLIMITED IPHONE to the UNLIMITED SMARTPHONE data plan...
well i pulled the trigger and got one, came with 1.6 so do i need to unlock it first to update it to 2.2?
thanks
I was in the same boat about a week ago.
Try this write up I just made. At the very least it'll put you in the right direction as far as what to use and what order to do things in..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=891609
I followed these steps and it took my 1.6 Streak to 2.2:
http://android.modaco.com/content/d...how-to-install-official-dell-2-2-upgrade-pkg/
Only difference was step 18 I used build 315 which was the latest at the time. I'm pretty sure build 318 would work in it's place as well. You can download build 318 here:
http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_318_12821_00.pkg
well i have 2.2 installed. had to use the streakdroid QDLTool method and had to use my wifes computer with windows 7 32bit, could not get it to work any other way (white streak and windows 7 64 on my comp) is there any easy way to upgrade to the newest build of 2.2? what build is on the QDLTool ?
thanks
What version did the qdl tool give you?
Sent from my Dell Streak
the extracted folder is QDLTool3rd_20101022_GAUSB1A130500
THere are 2 more after the one you are on now, 309 and 318...
there are links floating around that allow you to dl/and update right to the phone for the lates versions.
Sorry, I couldnt post the links, I am on the road, hopefully someone can help out...I know that I saw them on the streaksmart/pocketables boards.
Good luck
are they direct upgrade links? on streakdroid it said after i used the qdl tool i could go from within the phone and do a update? but it doesnt ever connect
found it in another thread

Need some info on Aria

So finally my gf is going to get her first smartphone!!! I think I am moreexcited about it than she is.... big steps in life..
anyways I had suggested the aria for her...well the only way to get it now is through att online.. not in any stores as they are going to discontinue it...
my question is I have been reading so far that it cannot be rooted and hacked once its been updated... is that like a forever thing? or can it be downgraded then flashed?
also does anyone know if it comes from att online already updated and set up?
I dont want her to get this phone if it is completely locked down...
the only other phones I suggested are the atrix and inspire.. however she likes the phones but she thinks they are just too big..
right now it looks like the atrix is going to be the way to go.... especially if this phone comes updated and unrootable.....
please any thought would help out.. especially if anyone knows if att updates the phone before they mail it to you.
thanks,
Nsomnia

If it comes from AT&T with the Froyo 2.2 update applied, then it will be un-rootable, even if you downgrade back to 2.1.
If they are discontinuing the Aria, then I would say the chances are that the current stock on hand does not have the Froyo 2.2 update on it are very good and it's worth taking a chance on.
A couple things:
Are you starting new service with AT&T, or eligible for an upgrade and thus getting the phone at a discounted/free price OR
Are you paying full no-commitment pricing as you are already AT&T customer?
Either way, you might want to look at http://wireless.amazon.com/HTC-Aria-Android-Phone-AT/dp/B003RCJA6S/ref=sh_br_ph_12?ie=UTF8&transaction=INDIVIDUAL_NEW. Their price is good if you are buying the phone outright, it's where I purchased mine. You can also start new service or do upgrades via them as well I think. Their return policy is also sweet, you get up to 30 days to return the phone in case your girlfriend doesn't like it.
Mine came with Android 2.1 OS and I had it rooted and a custom ROM loaded on within an hour of opening the box!

So wait - if the phone has been updated to 2.2, it can NEVER be rooted and modded, like EVER?
That may change my eBay buying habits for this phone...

Oooh. That's scary.
You might try HERE. They are listed as having the 2.1 OS.
I need it unlocked to use up here in Canada - hence my worry about it coming with 2.2 on it. I'm just going to try to communicate with the eBay sellers and hope they know what they are talking about.
Unlocking a phone for use on other carriers is completely separate from rooting and installing custom ROMs. You can unlock a phone that has AT&T official 2.2 update on it.
Yeah, but wouldn't I be stuck with a bunch of AT&T apps I could never use in Canada?

Thank you so much for this link! I've been looking at the Aria as my first Android phone, but AT&T only offers a refurbished one as an upgrade. I could get the refurb Aria for $0 or an Inspire for $99 through AT&T. Like the OP's girlfriend, I don't like the size of the Inspire. Also looked at the Captivate, but it seems big too.
At Amazon, I got a new Aria for $50. They added the extra data plan at checkout. Should get it Tuesday.
