So finally my gf is going to get her first smartphone!!! I think I am moreexcited about it than she is.... big steps in life..
anyways I had suggested the aria for her...well the only way to get it now is through att online.. not in any stores as they are going to discontinue it...
my question is I have been reading so far that it cannot be rooted and hacked once its been updated... is that like a forever thing? or can it be downgraded then flashed?
also does anyone know if it comes from att online already updated and set up?
I dont want her to get this phone if it is completely locked down...
the only other phones I suggested are the atrix and inspire.. however she likes the phones but she thinks they are just too big..
right now it looks like the atrix is going to be the way to go.... especially if this phone comes updated and unrootable.....
please any thought would help out.. especially if anyone knows if att updates the phone before they mail it to you.
thanks,
Nsomnia

If it comes from AT&T with the Froyo 2.2 update applied, then it will be un-rootable, even if you downgrade back to 2.1.
If they are discontinuing the Aria, then I would say the chances are that the current stock on hand does not have the Froyo 2.2 update on it are very good and it's worth taking a chance on.
A couple things:
Are you starting new service with AT&T, or eligible for an upgrade and thus getting the phone at a discounted/free price OR
Are you paying full no-commitment pricing as you are already AT&T customer?
Either way, you might want to look at http://wireless.amazon.com/HTC-Aria-Android-Phone-AT/dp/B003RCJA6S/ref=sh_br_ph_12?ie=UTF8&transaction=INDIVIDUAL_NEW. Their price is good if you are buying the phone outright, it's where I purchased mine. You can also start new service or do upgrades via them as well I think. Their return policy is also sweet, you get up to 30 days to return the phone in case your girlfriend doesn't like it.
Mine came with Android 2.1 OS and I had it rooted and a custom ROM loaded on within an hour of opening the box!

Mine was purchased through the online store and it had 2.1 on it. So the chances are quite good you'll be able to root.

This is what I did and the phone came with 2.1. that was 6 weeks ago. Rooted and rommed...
So wait - if the phone has been updated to 2.2, it can NEVER be rooted and modded, like EVER?
That may change my eBay buying habits for this phone...

Oooh. That's scary.
You might try HERE. They are listed as having the 2.1 OS.
I need it unlocked to use up here in Canada - hence my worry about it coming with 2.2 on it. I'm just going to try to communicate with the eBay sellers and hope they know what they are talking about.
Unlocking a phone for use on other carriers is completely separate from rooting and installing custom ROMs. You can unlock a phone that has AT&T official 2.2 update on it.
Yeah, but wouldn't I be stuck with a bunch of AT&T apps I could never use in Canada?

Thank you so much for this link! I've been looking at the Aria as my first Android phone, but AT&T only offers a refurbished one as an upgrade. I could get the refurb Aria for $0 or an Inspire for $99 through AT&T. Like the OP's girlfriend, I don't like the size of the Inspire. Also looked at the Captivate, but it seems big too.
At Amazon, I got a new Aria for $50. They added the extra data plan at checkout. Should get it Tuesday.

They don't care about consumers? I suggest to remember them who pay the bill...
Thats really messed up, and i believe that rogers is to blame for this, ppl been in contact with them for months and they said they had it in the labs testing, now we know that it was all lies, i'm got fed up a week ago and i rooted min and i'm running Amon RA 1.6.2 Donut rom, the same rome that HTC/Rogers says can't run on my rogers phone.
I'm not using a rogers sim in mine, and i hope most of the android customers leave the company, hit them where it hurts, their profit margin.............
Throw Cyanogen on there, also there's other roms like the one listed above.

To me, the problem is not costuming ROM or not, but We have a BIG problem with telecommunication in Canada, I'm a little bored about that... And I study in Electronic and Telecom... Haha, vengeance!!
yeah couldve told anyone that rogers dont give a damn about their consumers. Just know that any possible upgrades will nevercome. Their version of upgrade is get a new device and even that aint good cause theynever get the right devices. Telus got the touch pro 2, hero, they'r getting the droid/Milestone. rogers dont give two ****s but oh well. Now that telus has gsm we'll see how fast they lose customers. I hate telus to but at least i got better options and can still stick with android.

Hey everyone,
PSA: If you break your phone / get a new Hero from Sprint it WILL come with 2.1 pre-loaded. This means ( to the uninformed) that you will no longer have the ability to root your phone, until a exploit is found. Please be advised. I just picked my replacement up, and there it was plain as day.
You have been warned.
--27s
Mine didn't, Just got mine yesterday had 1.5 on it.
My phone shuts off intermittently, and I'm wondering what the odds are I'll get a phone with 2.1 on it. Heck, I might even get a moment like gunnyman did.
If you pick it up from a sprint store im sure it will have 2.1 on it, if you have sprint mail it to you it should come with stock 1.5
FWIW, I was at a Sprint store the other day and watched a guy buy a brand new Hero and I asked if it was 2.1 or 1.5. The girl that was working said it's 1.5 and that he could upgrade it if he wanted to but it's not required. She said all of there Hero's left in stock are that way, but any new ones from Sprint may come pre-upgraded. Just thought i would share.

I did not have a choice. The Radio fried up. (no I did not try and flash anything GSM...*rolls eyes*)...the techs just said that the radio was toast. (no pun intended)..and here I am.
Well, with some social engineering and a little luck, I managed to get an original 1.29 "with out google branding" hero from my local sprint store. They had it hiding in the back or something. I would recommend trying the same..
What they told me at my sprint store when i went to get my replacement was "Oh, Our Techs got borred so they updated all of the inventory to 2.1."
Needless to say i wasnt happy.
So, I accidentally got my 4g taken away through all the flashing i did, and I took it today to a sprint store to get it fixed (before i did this, i grabbed my old sd card which is 100% clean, also used the guide on how to downgrade from a rooted to stock, and then i upgraded to froyo stock).
It took them about 40 minutes of checking and stuff, at which point they came out to tell me the phone was flashed prior to the point which would void my warantee or w/e. Meaning even though i reseted my phone, upgraded to stock froyo, and cleared my sd card, they are still able to tell that your phone has been flashed.
The good news is that I have insurance on it, meaning i can get a brand new one for 100$. Just gonna report it lost, and get another one for 100$ and sell the old one on ebay
How could they tell? What sys info could there posibbly be that would let them figure out it had ever had any other rom version?
Couldn't you just ##786# and then Menu > Reset all before taking it in (with official firmware of course.) ?
When you claim your phone lost or stolen, they block that ESN so it can't be reactivated.

already did. I reset it several times from recovery, through the phone and through ##786#. After which I used reset the phone to unrooted 2.2 froyo. Going to reset it one more time today, with some different files, and take it into a different store. See if that helps. If not then I'm just gonna report it as lost, sell it on ebay, and get a new one.

When you make a claim through Asurion, they have no access to your Sprint account only to see if you have the insurance plan so they have no way to access your account to restrict the ESN and label it lost or stolen so that is where the loophole lies......

I have a little bit of a bone to pick with them.. about two weeks ago my wife lost her palm pixi... we put a claim in and I paid the $100 for a new one. Got the phone in but did not activate it due to me moving this last weekend. During the move, found her phone. I call asurion and tell them to take the flag off the ESN so I can just reactivate her phone. They say they cannot do that and since I found her phone to send it in to them. I told them ok, after I transfer her data I will send you that phone and you credit me my deductable. They said no.. I said then take the flag off of her phone and I will send you back yours and you give me the deductable. They said no... I said ok, well screw you.. I am selling the phone you gave me then and using her other to sell for parts and buying her an Evo... the damn pixi can pretty much be had for less than $100.. pricks.

Pretty sure there was never a block on the ESN. Trust me, i know a few people that did the same as me, and they never blocked the ESN. Also I know a guy who just called it lost, and never even deactivated/turned off the phone. Received the new one and sold it, while still using the old one.

I checked the S-On, but i never checked the PRI. Could of been the reason they found out it was rooted.

edit: actually it's more than 350 since I'm no longer able to upgrade and would have to buy the device without a plan.

pfft, six figure incomes are for women. My income has 8 numbers, then a little dot, then two more numbers..
He probably couldnt tell you flashed it himself, he probably did everything he could to fix it, or he probably went through some sort of checklist of things that could break 4g and ways to fix it; and then just came to conclusion that you must've flashed it in order to break it.
sorry i gotta call BS on knowing you rooted the phone ! ive rooted and returned to many for various hardware troubles never never had any body tell me i had a cooked rom flashed on the the phone in question
I was fully prepared to dive in and upgrade my Atrix 4G to a Samsung S4, when I discovered the problems with MF3 and the locked bootloader. At this point, any new phone I buy is guaranteed to have the update of doom.
I would drop AT&T in a heartbeat, but Sprint's network is crap, and I hear a lot of complaints about T-Mobile's coverage around me as well.
So unless there's something I'm not considering, it's AT&T or nothing right now.
So here's my dilemma - do I get the S4 and gamble that the bootloader will be unlocked sometime in the near future, or do I avoid it like the plague and continue with my Atrix 4G?
I'd appreciate any advice, especially if there are options I'm not aware of. I'm in the northeast and travel to the NYC area often.
Maybe switch to AT&T's no contract $60 talk/text/2gb plan and wait for the nexus 5. You'd be on the better carrier, off contract with an unlocked phone.
Personally since I like to flash I would avoid and just pick up a gently used one from Craigslist or Swappa that you can still loki.
Or pay a little bit more and buy an international variant with unlocked bootloader.

First, I don't think its necessarily guaranteed that you can only find or get an MF3 version.
- If you want the S4, it's worth going to a few stores and stating that you want to buy an S4, but only if it still has the older UCUAMDL -or earlier; anyway NOT the UCUAMF3. They (you) can check by looking on the sticker on the box -it has both serial number and the rom version.
- For a while the red versions of the S4 were selling slowing, so that's an option to look for.
- Also check dealers that are lower in volume like Radio Shack or Walmart/target store to see if they have a box. You could check Best Buy and even the ATT store.
Second, remember, there is nothing wrong with asking --I bought without asking, but went back just for the heck of it (Costco) and asked if they had any -most were MF3, they looked without giving me any grief. I think they might have still had one MDL, but that was a couple of weeks or more ago.
Even AT&T people won't give you grief about asking. When I went in to compare their stock S4 and my Shostock 2.1 (now 2.2) S4, the staff could care less about having a custom rom and rooted. . . so go ahead and ask!
Third: I would not recommend buying right now with the expectation of getting a new exploit shortly.
- It may happen, but this seems like a tough bootloader to crack. Also, it is getting harder and harder to create exploits period. So, it could be found this afternoon, but in general any new S4 exploit will arrive later and later.
- You really will be frustrated if you buy with the intent to customize the rom and can't.
Fourth: it may be small consolation, but MF3 can be rooted and you can add back all that root-needed good stuff. Also, the phone is a nice phone stock rom or no.
Bottom line -#1. go ahead and ask around -you may get lucky and #2. don't depend on MF3 being broken soon or not soon. Such a think is so hard to predict.
Good Luck!
I got the MF3 version and was disappointed to hear about the locked bootloader, but I rooted it, removed the bloat and now I have no regrets. They'll get it unlocked soon and then I'll probably hop back into the flashing addiction, but it's a great phone and I can't beat AT&T for their coverage and reliability.
My $0.02.
Sent from a van down by the river using my AT&T Galaxy Note 2 and Tapatalk 4.
I traded my iPhone 5 for a Note II then for an S4 only to find it with MF3. I then traded it for an MDL S4, all done via Craigslist. I'm on AT&T, which has far better service for me than any other carrier, unlocked it via service mode and will try my luck with it in China on Monday for a month. I'm waiting for the Note 3 to drop so I can then trade up to that. So all hope is not lost having an MF3 phone. The screen is beautiful, camera is great, and it feels great in your hand. I don't regret being an iFanboy for 7 years only to come to the wonderful new world of the "dark side" Best of luck!
OP it's very possible you can go to somewhere like a super store with light traffic and find one that's been on the shelf for a while..you can always return it and try again.

Huh. I didn't realize that I might still find it at a brick and mortar store. Those places seem to use AT&T's pricing, which is more expensive than I would pay on Amazon - but it might be worth it to get a pre-MF3 version.
Best Buy, I noticed, only shows the 16 GB version - not the 32 GB.
Given that this phone has a MicroSD slot, how much does this affect things?

I've seen a number of posts that the stock ROM can suffer from lag, which dissappears when people put a custom ROM on it. Does rooting the phone, by itself, allow you to overcome this?

You ask about 16 v 32. I have the 16g and it is fine I have a 32g sd card and still have room.. you vcan add and use a 64g card if you want. .
Prices are not bad. My phone at Costco was cheaper than anything at Amazon or elsewhere. And they have the 14 return policy like att and 30 day exchange. .. so good prices are out there

Hello folks! I've been rooting Android devices since the OEM Droid, but I feel out of my depth with my new endeavor
I just scooped up a brand new Sprint S4 on the cheap via craigslist(literally 30 mins ago).... but here's the plan:
I plan on taking this new S4 over to Straight Talk to see how I like it. But, I've NEVER transferred a device between carriers before, and don't know what the crap I'm doing. I'm assuming I need to unlock the phone before activating with Straight Talk(not a problem, I'm sure I can get 'er done. I've only ever unlocked AND rooted both together, but assuming I can figure it out).
But after I activate with Straight Talk am I up a creek as far as flashing new ROMS on the device? Can I still root and flash (whatever) via this same device thread?
I'm coming from a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I'm actually out of contract for the first time in 17 years, and almost can't believe it. The stock S4 is light years better than my rooted and overclocked Nexus, so worst case scenario, I'm plenty happy with staying stock if I'm SOL. But I'd LOVE to tinker with this puppy if I'm able to.
A good shove in the right direction would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks for taking to read this post!
it would appear I didn't do enough homework Looks like I've got my work cut out for me just to get the dang phone to work with Straight Talk.
Your best bet to get your CDMA phone working with them is to call customer service to check out the ESN. Or if you get good t-mobile or att reception in your area, you could always unlock it and pick up an att or tmo sim card to use.
There is this thread that shows how to unlock a Sprint S4 for domestic GSM carriers if you're interested...

A good shove in the right direction would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks for taking to read this post!

Again, on top of our private messages... I'm on straight talk and so far very happy. Only thing I can complain about is not having 4g...which I never had, so I've never experienced it. The flash service through ebay, the guy will take control of your PC and you can have it done when the flasher scheduled you a time. I bought my s4 on ebay with a bad ESN for like $389 a month after release. Also, the native hotspot doesnt work, but works once you flash the hotspot hack and use a widget from the playstore to turn it on/off it works perfectly. I personally use exlir 2 as my widget. I'm on a Sprint phone and it's flashed to Verizon's towers too, which is better in most areas. Other then that, for rooting/ROM purposes, I have zero issues. Signal/GPS is perfect. It even takes the OTA updates as long as your pure stock.:good: Using Odin .tar files is okay.
On second thought, the ebay service is illegal...your cloning a phone. Straight Talk thinks I have a Blackberry

I know I'm late in responding, but you made a point I found out after the fact. No 4G when taking the CDMA phone over to Straight Talk. This was a deal killer for me. I've since turned the phone on craigslist, and am looking for an AT&T version now
My only question is- How do you flash for specific towers?
congrats
