Opinion on selling rooted G1 - Quick Qs - G1 General

I'm gonna be selling a rooted White G1 probably on ebay soon. (Got a newer Black one on its way) I just wondered whether you think I'd be better reverting it back to stock to sell or listing it as rooted/jailbroken. I've no other big mods on it like themes, just root and some cache's put onto the SD Card.
Would you be more inclined to buy a ready rooted G1, or would you rather buy stock and do the rooting yourself? Just wondering what people's opinions are.
Thanks - Daisy xx

i'm guessing you could probably get a little more for a rooted phone, as there are a lot of lazy people out there who can't be bothered finding out how to do it.
i remember people were buying jailbroken Iphones for stupid amounts when it was first done. do some research on ebay and see whats selling for more
oh, and be sure to put whether it's a UK, American or Developer firmware.
thinking about it, if you flash the ADP1.1 (developer) firmware you'll probably get more because it sounds more impressive

I've not put ADP 1 on it ecause of the glitch with phone numbers, and i'll probably be selling UK only . Will have a check on the bay. When I searched recently tho, there were plenty of G1's for sale but exactly none actually mentioning being rooted.
We'll see Ta for that xxx

If you do sell to the U.S., put the RC30 on there so it has MSN and Yahoo messenger.

I think you should remove the cache from the SD unless you plan to include the SD already set up with ext2 partition on it, and explain to people on the auction what it is so that they won't be confused about the size missing.

Ya I likely would remove the Cache to SD anyway as it tends to reset itself when you wipe. It's not currently got an EXT2 partition anyway, as you don't need that to pop the cache's on the SD Card, so no size is missing from the SD card.
I'll probably list it (and leave it) rooted with as much info as I can about that, and see what happens, as the fone behaves perfectly normally even if someone who didn't need root bought it. Then if i don't sell it I'll consider returning it to stock state.
Ta for the help and I'll let folks on here know when its listed in case anyone is interested (I can format an EXT2 partition though, ready for saving Apps to SD Card if anyone wanted that)
Dais xxx

yea get rid of the cache to the SD. Other than that people pay more for a modded electronic hardware. Original Xbox? Xbox360s, Wii's (all consoles pretty much) and the wing i remember selling very well compared to others. With a higher profit from it if it werent. gl

Why not leave it rooted - so it sounds more exotic - but give the option to revert to a standard build if buyer requires? That way everyone's a winner!

Hi Daisy,
How much do you want to sell it for? Send me a PM.
Regards, Minty (UK)

I'll list this on ebay (Still rooted but with a full data wipe and no cache's on SD card ) sometime this evening with a Buy It Now of £250 plus £6 Special Delivery so feel free to nip over and splash out (Includes 8GB sd card too!!)
Daisy xx
EDIT - ebay link here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290294087153 - Item number 290294087153

Truthfully I would not sell it rooted. Here is why.
Some one who wants to buy an already rooted phone because they don't want to learn how is not going to know how to update it. If that is the case they will be stuck on rooted rc30. I rooted my friends g1 but now he is dependent on me to update it for him everytime there is an update. I would think you would get a lot more money if its unlocked. IMHO.

That is a fair point, actually. I've modified my ebay listing a little, and will see if it gets a decent price, if not I'll revert to stock and sell as such I do figure that if they are not techy, they likely won't bid and be put off by the fact I've said it needs some Knowledge to update.
Regards, Daisy xx

I just sold my white G1 on ebay for £220 plus p&p. I left JF1.3 on there, and only had the 2gb SD card.
Mine was unlocked too.... so at £240 you should get a buyer.

How much? I am looking for a DEV phone. One i can plan around with and not **** up my main G1.
here is my craiglist ad with pics so you guys can see

Where did you get the car mount?
just to let you know, Craigslist supports HTML not forum codes BB codes you are using. Use the HTML code Photobucket provides you instead.
Thanks for the html advice
I made the changes. the car mount is not specifically made for the g1 but after a month of searching, it was the best mount i found. The sides are soft so the phone is not scratched. I'm selling everything for 150 dollars.

Need some info on Aria

So finally my gf is going to get her first smartphone!!! I think I am moreexcited about it than she is.... big steps in life..
anyways I had suggested the aria for her...well the only way to get it now is through att online.. not in any stores as they are going to discontinue it...
my question is I have been reading so far that it cannot be rooted and hacked once its been updated... is that like a forever thing? or can it be downgraded then flashed?
also does anyone know if it comes from att online already updated and set up?
I dont want her to get this phone if it is completely locked down...
the only other phones I suggested are the atrix and inspire.. however she likes the phones but she thinks they are just too big..
right now it looks like the atrix is going to be the way to go.... especially if this phone comes updated and unrootable.....
please any thought would help out.. especially if anyone knows if att updates the phone before they mail it to you.
thanks,
Nsomnia

If it comes from AT&T with the Froyo 2.2 update applied, then it will be un-rootable, even if you downgrade back to 2.1.
If they are discontinuing the Aria, then I would say the chances are that the current stock on hand does not have the Froyo 2.2 update on it are very good and it's worth taking a chance on.
A couple things:
Are you starting new service with AT&T, or eligible for an upgrade and thus getting the phone at a discounted/free price OR
Are you paying full no-commitment pricing as you are already AT&T customer?
Either way, you might want to look at http://wireless.amazon.com/HTC-Aria-Android-Phone-AT/dp/B003RCJA6S/ref=sh_br_ph_12?ie=UTF8&transaction=INDIVIDUAL_NEW. Their price is good if you are buying the phone outright, it's where I purchased mine. You can also start new service or do upgrades via them as well I think. Their return policy is also sweet, you get up to 30 days to return the phone in case your girlfriend doesn't like it.
Mine came with Android 2.1 OS and I had it rooted and a custom ROM loaded on within an hour of opening the box!

Mine was purchased through the online store and it had 2.1 on it. So the chances are quite good you'll be able to root.

This is what I did and the phone came with 2.1. that was 6 weeks ago. Rooted and rommed...
So wait - if the phone has been updated to 2.2, it can NEVER be rooted and modded, like EVER?
That may change my eBay buying habits for this phone...

Oooh. That's scary.
You might try HERE. They are listed as having the 2.1 OS.
I need it unlocked to use up here in Canada - hence my worry about it coming with 2.2 on it. I'm just going to try to communicate with the eBay sellers and hope they know what they are talking about.
Unlocking a phone for use on other carriers is completely separate from rooting and installing custom ROMs. You can unlock a phone that has AT&T official 2.2 update on it.
Yeah, but wouldn't I be stuck with a bunch of AT&T apps I could never use in Canada?

Thank you so much for this link! I've been looking at the Aria as my first Android phone, but AT&T only offers a refurbished one as an upgrade. I could get the refurb Aria for $0 or an Inspire for $99 through AT&T. Like the OP's girlfriend, I don't like the size of the Inspire. Also looked at the Captivate, but it seems big too.
At Amazon, I got a new Aria for $50. They added the extra data plan at checkout. Should get it Tuesday.

[Q] Resale Prep for my Fascinate

I read this thread, but my questions go a bit further and I didn't want to hijack it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449820
___________________________________________________________
So the time to upgrade has come for me (to what is irrelevant), and I must do something with my trusty Fascinate. I could keep it as a backup, but my inclination is to sell it and I’m a complete noob to the smart-phone resale market. I know in looking at ads that it has some significant value, but I’m not quite sure how to prepare it for sale. Here are the questions I’m looking for input on:
1. Best resale channel – I know that XDA has a for-sale board, but would eBay be a better choice in terms of exposure?
2. The “clean ESN” question - My phone will have a clean ESN when I sell it, but how to prove that to a potential buyer without risk to me? I’ve read that there is some risk to revealing your ESN, but I’m not sure if that’s real.
3. Revert to stock? I’m currently running makelegs’ CM7 kang and Glitch 13.1, and at first I thought reverting to stock would be best, but I’ve read where Verizon is struggling with their current ROM’s problems so I’m not so sure.
4. Sell with or without my original 16 GB SD card? I’ve never had a failure with it, and if I sell on eBay I’m not sure if including it would increase the overall sales value to make it worthwhile. If I choose to sell it with the phone, I know I should make sure it is wiped.
I can only speak to #1, #3 and #4. Ebay would be a much better option IMHO. Lots more potential buyers. I just saw a broken fascinate go for $27 (+$10 shipping), and it had multiple bidders. Not bad for something that doesn't work at ALL!
If it was me I would return the phone to stock. You do not know the person that would buy it and they might not know anything about rooting/ROMS/etc. If you give them one that has a custom ROM on it, things might go bad for them.
If the phone works I would include the SD card, but I would make sure I wipe it.
I would recommend craigslist over ebay - much easier to be scammed as a seller and ebay costs a lot to post+sell+ship.
Also leave it as is, and ask the seller what rom they want on it. If they sound clueless, just do them a favor and revert it to factory and pretend you never asked.
Also in regards to the SD card, I would default it to no SD card, or if you got like a 2GB one - stick that in there. You'll need it for your next phone - and a 16GB would be $15-$20 more, and selling the SD card w/ the phone won't net you that much more.
As far as ESN, if it's on craigslist - you can verify it on VZ's website after you two meet, if it's over ebay/online - I guess you would tell them after payment you'll give them to ESN to verify? (not sure, i've always sold through craigslist)

1) eBay
2) they can check it themselves on Verizon's website. Put in your description that you will disclose esn to winning bidder to check themselves if they choose to do so.
3) always return to stock. I'd Odin eh03 from droidstyle's guide.
4) i would sell the SD card with it. Most if not all phones come with them anymore.

Thanks to all for your input. I'll likely revert to stock and sell it on eBay with the SD card.

Advice on purchasing an S4?

I was fully prepared to dive in and upgrade my Atrix 4G to a Samsung S4, when I discovered the problems with MF3 and the locked bootloader. At this point, any new phone I buy is guaranteed to have the update of doom.
I would drop AT&T in a heartbeat, but Sprint's network is crap, and I hear a lot of complaints about T-Mobile's coverage around me as well.
So unless there's something I'm not considering, it's AT&T or nothing right now.
So here's my dilemma - do I get the S4 and gamble that the bootloader will be unlocked sometime in the near future, or do I avoid it like the plague and continue with my Atrix 4G?
I'd appreciate any advice, especially if there are options I'm not aware of. I'm in the northeast and travel to the NYC area often.
Maybe switch to AT&T's no contract $60 talk/text/2gb plan and wait for the nexus 5. You'd be on the better carrier, off contract with an unlocked phone.
Personally since I like to flash I would avoid and just pick up a gently used one from Craigslist or Swappa that you can still loki.
Or pay a little bit more and buy an international variant with unlocked bootloader.

First, I don't think its necessarily guaranteed that you can only find or get an MF3 version.
- If you want the S4, it's worth going to a few stores and stating that you want to buy an S4, but only if it still has the older UCUAMDL -or earlier; anyway NOT the UCUAMF3. They (you) can check by looking on the sticker on the box -it has both serial number and the rom version.
- For a while the red versions of the S4 were selling slowing, so that's an option to look for.
- Also check dealers that are lower in volume like Radio Shack or Walmart/target store to see if they have a box. You could check Best Buy and even the ATT store.
Second, remember, there is nothing wrong with asking --I bought without asking, but went back just for the heck of it (Costco) and asked if they had any -most were MF3, they looked without giving me any grief. I think they might have still had one MDL, but that was a couple of weeks or more ago.
Even AT&T people won't give you grief about asking. When I went in to compare their stock S4 and my Shostock 2.1 (now 2.2) S4, the staff could care less about having a custom rom and rooted. . . so go ahead and ask!
Third: I would not recommend buying right now with the expectation of getting a new exploit shortly.
- It may happen, but this seems like a tough bootloader to crack. Also, it is getting harder and harder to create exploits period. So, it could be found this afternoon, but in general any new S4 exploit will arrive later and later.
- You really will be frustrated if you buy with the intent to customize the rom and can't.
Fourth: it may be small consolation, but MF3 can be rooted and you can add back all that root-needed good stuff. Also, the phone is a nice phone stock rom or no.
Bottom line -#1. go ahead and ask around -you may get lucky and #2. don't depend on MF3 being broken soon or not soon. Such a think is so hard to predict.
Good Luck!
I got the MF3 version and was disappointed to hear about the locked bootloader, but I rooted it, removed the bloat and now I have no regrets. They'll get it unlocked soon and then I'll probably hop back into the flashing addiction, but it's a great phone and I can't beat AT&T for their coverage and reliability.
My $0.02.
Sent from a van down by the river using my AT&T Galaxy Note 2 and Tapatalk 4.
I traded my iPhone 5 for a Note II then for an S4 only to find it with MF3. I then traded it for an MDL S4, all done via Craigslist. I'm on AT&T, which has far better service for me than any other carrier, unlocked it via service mode and will try my luck with it in China on Monday for a month. I'm waiting for the Note 3 to drop so I can then trade up to that. So all hope is not lost having an MF3 phone. The screen is beautiful, camera is great, and it feels great in your hand. I don't regret being an iFanboy for 7 years only to come to the wonderful new world of the "dark side" Best of luck!
OP it's very possible you can go to somewhere like a super store with light traffic and find one that's been on the shelf for a while..you can always return it and try again.

Huh. I didn't realize that I might still find it at a brick and mortar store. Those places seem to use AT&T's pricing, which is more expensive than I would pay on Amazon - but it might be worth it to get a pre-MF3 version.
Best Buy, I noticed, only shows the 16 GB version - not the 32 GB.
Given that this phone has a MicroSD slot, how much does this affect things?

I've seen a number of posts that the stock ROM can suffer from lag, which dissappears when people put a custom ROM on it. Does rooting the phone, by itself, allow you to overcome this?

I use a 64gb SD in mine. I haven't found any storage problems yet internal or external.
You ask about 16 v 32. I have the 16g and it is fine I have a 32g sd card and still have room.. you vcan add and use a 64g card if you want. .
Prices are not bad. My phone at Costco was cheaper than anything at Amazon or elsewhere. And they have the 14 return policy like att and 30 day exchange. .. so good prices are out there

Is this the phone I should buy

I hav an LG x power. I bought it for the big battery. I knew it was a little slow on the performance but I did not care. My main concerns were big battery and expandable sd card and lastly gaining root.
Lo an behold there is still no root to this thing. And I cannot even run many apps because the internal is 16gb and all the bloatware takes up a ton of space so there is no space for me to update a few simple apps. I cannot use the external SD card as system expansion for apps. I am thoroughly confused as to why I cannot do this as I thought that was always an option. You put an SD card into it and then the system asks if you want to use it for system expansion or as a removable external. When did that stop and why? Seems like a no brainer.
But enough about bashing my old piece of crap phone. I need to upgrade. I want a phone with a removable battery or possibly an oversized aftermarket battery. I want to be able to root just to get rid of bloatware and maybe a hotspot. Roms are cool but that is not a priority, i just hate bloatware. A decent camera is all I ask for. I want to be able to put at least a 128 gb micro in the expansion slot for all my music . And decent price for a used or new one on swappa. Maybe 2-300. I dont lease phones I buy them outright.
I have done my research and it seems like the V20 is what I want. Does anyone have information that I am missing?
There are some aftermarket batteries for the V20 (at the cost of a larger, bulging backplate), but chances of rooting at this point are slim to none if you have a newer security patch. Someone here is working to fix that, but at the moment root is pretty much a no-go. Plenty of storage at 64gb and SD card slot can handle the 128gb SD card you're trying to use. You can move apps to the SD card on the V20 as well if 64gb isn't enough.
If you get an unlocked model of the V20 it won't come with bloatware and the stock apps remain intact (can you believe some carriers remove the radio, file explorer or even the gallery?) If you're limited to a carrier version bloat can be removed without root through the use of ADB.
good catch thanks. I know that I have bought other electronics and the dealer took it upon them self to update the firmware before passing along to the customer thinking that they are being helpful.
The models that I know for a fact can be rooted are the AT&T H910 and the unlocked US996. I have not verified the firmware on any others. Well, I can tell you that the T-Mobile H918 on the latest firmware can't be rooted yet. The VS995, and LS997 also can't be rooted on the latest firmware.
probably should have mentioned I am sprint.
hmmm. any others models that fit my criteria as well as sprint?
If you are on Sprint, and you want a phone that is guaranteed to be rootable, you will need to get an unlocked US996. You can unlock the bootloader on LG's website, and then root away. If you get a used LS997, it may or may not be rootable -- it depends on what firmware version it comes with.
