Decrease Connection Time for Mobile Data! - Networking

Have you ever noticed that it takes a month of Sundays for your Windows Mobile phone to... actually connect to the server and start downloading? Watch for it the next time you go to a website with your phone.
From my experiences with AT&T, it's because their DNS services suck giant... coconuts. They're overloaded, slow, and take forever to respond to a query. (For those that don't know, a DNS server is like a phone book, it converts domains (names) like www.google.com into IP addresses (phone numbers) like 74.125.67.100)
By changing the DNS servers for my MEdia Net connection, pages begin loading up to 30 seconds faster. It's not a speed boost speed wise, but it greatly shortens the time you're waiting for the page to pop up.
Directions for Windows Mobile 6.5:
1. Click "Start"
2. Click "Settings"
3. Click "Connections"
4. Open "Connections"
5. Choose "Manage Existing Connections"
6. Choose your connection (In my case, MEdia Net)
7. Click "Edit"
8. Hit "Next" twice until you get to a page asking for a User Name and Password. DON'T CHANGE THIS or you will lose your data connection! (view attachment)
9. Click the "Advanced" button. This opens up the TCP/IP settings. DON'T CHANGE THIS (view attachment)
10. Select the "Servers" tab. This is where you change your DNS server. Set to "Use Server-Assigned Addresses" to use your carrier's servers. (view attachment)
11. Select "Use Specific Server Addresses" and enter your DNS server addresses. I have personally had great luck with:
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6
I personally use 4.2.2.2 because it's easier to remember. There are many other public DNS servers out there, just Google! (view attachment)
12. Hit "OK", and if the connection is open, you will get a dialog asking to save. Click "Yes" (view attachment)
13. TEST IT OUT!
-------------
I'm very interested in seeing how many other people report connection speed decreases by changing their DNS servers. This weekend, I was at a racetrack near Green Bay, Wisconsin and I couldn't connect to any websites at all. The connection kept timing out. I became curious, changed the DNS to 4.2.2.2 from default, and I had instant connections.

Well, I'm on tmobile Edge connection and everything is fine for me so i can't feel your pain. have you tried skyfire browser to browse or are you talking about downloading emails?

My Exec won't browse GPRS!?

It did work, but something happened and now it doesnt!? I've reinstalled the Exec_Connections.cab file that someone nicely posted, I select Basic etc and it runs through the procedure.
When asked I select UK and PostPay and it then reboots my Exec.
My O2 Active connection seems to work fine and I can browse O2's online Active (pointless) website without problem, however when I try to visit an external URL outside the O2 network, i.e. Google.co.uk, I just get an error.
Any ideas?
I'm sure Mike wont' mind me posting the Private Message he posted to me, but I've removed the Usernames/Passwords - if anyone wants them, PM either of us.
The funny thing is that upon adding this, I entered 'Mobile Web' as the profiles name, and it stated that this name already existed!? So I wonder if the correct settings ARE in there, but they're hidden/disabled??
----------------
These are what I use on my O2 set-up
Start/ Settings Connections Tab, Connections icon, Select Manage existing connection.
On The MY ISP screen select Edit and for the name type MOBILE WEB GPRS, for the modem select Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G) from the drop down box. Press next, Access point name is mobile.o2.co.uk then press next user name is ###### (or if you want to reduce the web download to speed it up and save some cash use the user name of #####, this prevents graphics etc, password is ####### domain is left blank, press Advanced button, select Servers tab, check the Use specific server address DNS is 193.113.200.200 Alt DNS is 193.113.200.201 press OK top rh select Finish and press YES to save changes - Mike
Few more quick questions actually...
I'm shortly travelling to Barcelona, do I have to...
1. Let O2 know what I'm roaming with Online200?
2. How much will GPRS cost me over there?
Cheers, Ash
Try 0870 600 3009 for Customer Care. It's usually a good idea to check for roaming as there may be restrictions on the account.
I can't recall EU GPRS roaming charges off of the top of my head. Sorry
Have a nice trip though.

terminal services client help!

can sum1 please post step by step instructions on how to connect to another computer on a home wireless network, network is 100% would love to get this working!
thanks
Make sure both wifi adapters are ON (both PC and PDA)
1. On your PDA, go to Start->settings->Connections->Network cards
You should find two tabs "Wireless" & "Network Adapters"
2. Click on Add New (in the wireless tab)
3. Give a convinient name, and select "This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection"
4. Complete it by hitting OK
5. Go to "Network Adapters" tab, and choose "tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet..." adapter
6. Provide a specific IP address (eg. 192.168.1.2) & subnet mask (eg. 255.255.255.0)
7. Press OK to complete it!
8. Now, on your desktop, double click on your wireless connection tray icon, and then click on "Properties" button
9. Double click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list to get the tcpip properties
10. Select "Use following IP address, and specify an IP (eg. 192.168.1.1) & subnet (eg. 255.255.255.0)
11. Press Ok, and close all dialogs
12. Now, right click on your wireless tray icon and select "View available wireless networks"
13. If you've got all the above steps right, you should find the Adhoc network you created on your PDA (...you should find the name you provided in step 3!)
14. Connect to it, and you have your wifi adhoc connection established!
Now you can do the following -
1. You can browse the contents of your desktop through Resco by setting up a simple Network drive (as long as you have a username and password for a user account on your desktop, it should be pretty straight forward to do it in resco!)
2. You can use Terminal services client
a. Fire up TSC, and type in your computer's name and press connect
(you can find out by right clicking on your "My Computer" icon and then clicking on properties) Eg. "Laptop" (without the quotes)
b. press connect, and you should see a login screen!
c. Enter your username and password that u use on ur desktop, and you should get things rolling Wink
Cheers!
San
ok, don't want to use adhoc, have a netgear dg834g, are the instructions the same for the adhoc, as in the ip setup?
One point to note, at least on my setup...
If I try TSC and enter my servers name it attempts to connect via GPRS,3G. If however I enter the IP address it connects with Wifi perfectly.
Not sure why but I can live with it...

My bet would be that your wifi might not be giving you DNS services and your GRPS is.
You would think so, but my laptop and all the other PC's in the house happily connect using TSC to my server using its NAME instead of it's IP. I just thought it was some thing to do with the Universal.
Anyone knows how is possible to set a different port of 3389 default?
I try to write 192.168.1.X:XXXXX but it's impossible..it says The server name is invalid.
Thankx

No way to redirect on the client side but you could redirect on the server side with a port forwarding type app. Kind of defeats the purpose of obscuring port 3389 though.
the problem with wifi gprs umts vpn and tsc all relate to the same issues, namely "." in the addresses.
the full stop and name issues usually relate in some way to the "my work" and "internet" designations of your connection types.
to cut a long story short, if you are having difficulty using IP addresses (I have never got a name to work), then place the IP address you are trying to use in the exceptions section of your connection type.
this way, the OS allows the "." in the addressing.
I think the "." issue is not allowed when you are the "my work" connection type, as this is designed or expects to a name for the connection. this is so even if you are using myserver.mydomain.com as the addressing.
if it detects the fullstop, it assumes you want to use the "internet" connection, disconnects what you are looking for and starts using the "internet" designated connection, and if it cant find one uses the 3g/gprs and auto launches.
what a wonderful system, and I dont really fully understand the need for "my work" versus "internet" but it is at operating system level from microsoft, and occurs on all the WM2005 devices as far as I can establish.
if you search on "my work" vpn gprs or similar through the forums, you will find a detailed outline and explanations.
i encountered the problems when trying to use TSC over a VPN over either WIFI or 3G, it simply kept cutting out after 2 seconds, or couldnt find it.
IP addresses are far better, far faster if you can use them and know them, add these into your exceptions as you will find that they rarely change and it should all start coming together.
hasnt been mentioned and dont know if it is different for the m5000 on WM5 (iam using an m1000 with SDIO WIFI)
If i have the PDA Connected on the Wireless network to enable me to connect through TSC i always have to ensure that my work network is selected for both of the two options in Network Management, (start/settings/connections/connections/advanced/select networks)
The top one 'programs that connect to the internet should connect using' is the key one for me, i have an orange gprs connection i need to ensure this has orange gprs or it will not connect, and vise versa if connecting through wireless it has to be My Work Network

Internet access?

Hello, I was just curious as to if there is a way to surf the web on your T-wing without the 19.99 data plan. I used to have the Tmobile Web on my tweaked Nokia 5300, and Sony Ericcson w600i and I accessed some site pretty well using OperaMini. I had desktop views of myspace and other websites.
I was also able to use my phone a modem when I was away from home (by re-configuring my browser).
Wondering if there is a way to configure the wing to use the same access ports as those other phones, rather than pay a whooping 19.99 for total internet plan, when my home cable internet is only $29.99.
Any help.....mods please delete this thread if it violates the rules.
I don't believe so...
Around last July, TMo began to upgrade their security and block the t-zones access for 3rd party apps. By September, even the $5.99 plan wouldn't allow Opera Mini or Google Maps to work. Even port scanning voicestream.com from my computer came back blocked. I eventually broke down and got the $19.99 plan. I just cut my minutes back, and text and Skype over EDGE to make up the difference. The Total Internet plan used to be $29.99 so it could be worse, I guess. Do those settings still work on you Nokia? If they do, what are they and I will test them. All the ports under 216.155.165.050 have been blocked in markets that have been upgraded to EDGE.
I strongly disagree because up until the end of Jan 08, I still accessed most websites with my nokia 5300 just having the 5.99 tmobile web feature. Of course, T-MObile sold the phone to me and locked access to/with third party software. I called them for support, and they would not help. They asked me to call Nokia. I called Nokia and they told me to call me phone company. So I said, F--k it!!!
And I went the hacking route. And Lo!!! I could access the internet. And that's what I'm looking for with the wing right now. I talked to a tech guy with T-Mobile and he wouldn't tell me much, but from what he told me, it seems the data plan is just a scam.....an excuse to give you the same thing for more money just cause you have a more expensive and "more capable" phone.
We'll see...
Good luck
Well I have,
ap = Internet2.Voicestream.com or wap.voicestream.com
proxy = 216.155.165.050
port = 8080
dns = 216.155.175.105
alt dns = 216.155.175.106
You will have to change back to the original settings if you need to access email, and this should allow IE and some 3rd party apps to to work. I need my email for work and it's too much of a hassle for me. These work where I have GPRS but not where I have EDGE. Maybe you"ll have better luck than me.
I was still able to access websites with my p900 using opera 8, but not opera mini. And opera mini on my hacked V3 just stopped working overnight. Were you browsing with opera or the internal browser?

Thanks for your responsee....are these settings for the T-wing or just a regular phone?
Should be any phone, they are network settings not phone specific. You can try wap.voicestream.com too.
This might article help you with your laptop as well.

I can get it working without any problem
Working for me also
I have a Dash and a Wing on T-mobile, I use the $5.99/mo data plan w/ a proxy. I have never had a problem running 3rd party apps except Google Maps. I am able to use Google Maps, however I occasionally get a message about not being able to connect to the internet. If you could tell the application which connection to use (like you can w/ PIE or Email), I don't think any apps would have problems accessing the internet.

I'm using the Open Touch rom, and I tried configuring the proxy last week, but failed. Could you show me the process of changing the proxy settings.
I went to Settings> Connections> Connections >
then there's the TMobile Data with 3 options:
- Add a new modem connection
- Set up my proxy server
-Manage existing connections
It is after here that I get lost becos i chose manage proxy server and it would not do the trick for me.
Review the following steps and see if these help, found from my cheat sheet. With the original TMobile Wing, I just focus step 24-29.
1. Open up your keyboard and get out your stylus because it will make it easier
2. Start menu --> Settings
3. Go to 'Connections' tab
4. Then click on Connections app
5. Select 'Set up my proxy server'
6. Select the 'General' tab
7. On the general tab, name it "WAP" (or anything, really, that's just what I used) -- if you haven't messed
with this before, it will say "My Work Network"
8. Select the 'Modem' tab
9. Click on New...
10. Name the connection "Tzones" (again, that's what I used)
11. Under modem, select 'Cellular Line (GPRS)'
12. Click Next

17. On the 'TCP/IP' tab, ensure "Use server-assigned IP address" is checked and that nothing else is
checked or filled-in
18. On the 'Servers' tab, ensure "Use server-assigned addresses" is checked and that nothing else is checked
or filled-in
19. Click "ok" in the top right corner (or press the OK button next to your space bar)

I think I lied......I'm probably not the best person to leave in a chemical lab alone....may blow things up.
Ok. I had the settings as above and I totally forgot that although I had switched internet features from Data Plan to TMobile Web, the change had not been effective.
However, when the change became effective at the turn of the day, yesterday, there was no more connection for me......anyone knows what possibly happened?
I was out of the country for about 6 months and used to use $5.99 T-Mo Web all the time on my Hermes and Wizards. I just called them to re-add it because it's not listed on the My T-Mobile website anymore. They did add it but no sites are loading. Maybe they did block the 216.155.165.050 proxy? This is frustrating, I think $20/month is too much for crappy Edge speeds anyway. I've had a 3G phone for a year and have not once ever been on 3G. If I can't get this $5.99 plan to check my gmail somehow in the next few days, I'm calling them back to cancel it.

Big problem I think a lot of people are having is the proxy settings and port number. sometimes if you use the network wizard to configure your settings, you get (216.155.165.050) that is wrong! it should be (216.155.165.50)! that extra (0) before the (50) has caused a lot of people to have an unusable connection. also make sure the port settings are (8080) and not (80) that too seems to have caused problems.

Absolutly correct. The proxy must be 216.155.165.50, not 050, they are two totally different address'. The port must be 8080 and not just 80, again, different address' all together. I have been using the proxy trick to access the internet. I have used it for about a year now and I have a super fast connection and have access to my emails. Only limitation I have found with the proxy trick is there is no youtube to watch!
I live in Orlando Fl and I use the internet everyday.
Can you still send mms messaging? I noticed when I did this with my wifes Wing, she couldn't send or recieve picture messages. But the proxy works great on my Shadow with no problems what so ever.

yes, no problems whatsoever with mms. just make sure the above settings are correct.
does tmo still offer the 5.99 for the wing? I cannot find the option to add it in my plan / service option on the website

I was wondering how to know if WiFi has priority over 3G when its enabled because I notice when I have WiFi enabled and do send and receive in my outlook it's turning on the data connection option in connectivity (thats 3G I'm guessing) and downloading stuff. Ideally I'd like it to use the WiFi if its enabled but am not sure if it is?
Can someone clarify please!
Thanks
I'd like to know the answer to this too.
The only solution I've found which is quite crap to be honest is to set up a fake dummy connection or go
All settings > Connections tab > Connections > Advanced tab > Select Networks
Then choose My ISP or anything that doesn't have a modem connection defined. You'll then have to turn on wifi whenever you want to access the net. This isn't exactly ideal to be honest.
From what I've found out today and from searching on here is that it's the windows mobile live client has got it built in to prioritize GPRS/3G etc over Wifi ...
utter crap so I looked up alternate ways to get hotmail you can use pop3 and stuff but not sure it will sync like IMAP does, but that's the only solution I've found for now. So change the network connection to something other than mobile web when you're on wifi then change it to mobile web when you're on the streets etc and don't have wifi access.
Must be a better way though??? There's been so many people ask this on this forum and everyone of them got half arsed replies.
Outlook plus pop is ok, that is it use wifi if it is available and 3G otherwise. The problem is on hotmail accessed using windows live.
I found a solution in using HTTPMail provider 1.5 to access hotmail (it is not free but cheap enough). You can find it googling around.
I read reports around about problems during installation so I simply extracted the files (HTTPMail.dll, MIME.dll, HTTPTransport.dll and HTTPMailReg.exe) from the cab and copied them under \windows, registered manually HTTPMail.dll, MIME.dll and HTTPTransport.dll using regsvr_arm.exe (you can find it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=80255&d=1207768826) and registered the software using HTTPMailReg.exe
After installation an hotmail account can be created using this procedure.
Open Inbox
Tap Accounts and choose "New Account"
Enter your a fake e-mail address (not hotmail, otherwise windows live kiks in) and tap Next
Skip auto configuration (otherwise windows live kiks in) and tap Next
Set the user name to your complete e-mail address, enter your password, check the "Save password" option and tap Next
Set the Account type to HTTP and tap Next
Depending on which service you are using enter "hotmail" or "msn" (without the quotes) for both the incoming and outgoing server names, leave the domain field blank and tap the "Options" button
Set the connection to "The Internet" and tap Next
Set the maximum amount to fetch for each message or accept the default settings and tap Next
Set the maximum age for the downloaded messages and tap Next
Good luck.
i would be interested in this too.
at home, i have a wifi router and i'd like the phone to use that connection when reachable/available. then, when i'm not at home and there's no other wifi available, without doing any manual setting, it should skip to 3G.
is the device working like that by default? any special settings needed?

Can you run over this please as I'm not getting the screens in the order you've written them.
1. First screen I get email address so I put in a fake one.
2. Second screen I get "Your Name" field and then "Account Display Name"
3. Third screen I get "Incoming Mail Server" ... what do I put here? You said "hotmail" or "msn" ... but what exactly... pop3.hotmail.com or what?? and other field is account type. I see HTML there so I choose that.
4. Fourth screen is "Username" and "password" I put that as my hotmail username (not fake) and proper password...
5. "Outgoing Mail Server" ... again what to put for this?? Advanced settings on this page ... I've set it to "The Internet"
Left the rest of the other pages as default when I go to hit send and receive I get an error saying:
"The URL does not use a recognized protocol (80042001) Error Source: HTTP Status: Logging On"
hmm??

1. Ok.
2. Insert whatever you like.
3. Insert literally "hotmail" or "msn" and select HTTP.
4. Username should be the complete address, for example [email protected], password ok.
5. Again, insert literally "hotmail" or "msn", advanced setting ok, do not check Outgoing... and Use the same... should be grayed (disabled)
Before that you must register the DLLs (using regsvr_arm.exe) and the software (using HTTPMailReg.exe) and soft reset.
Followed all of that exactly as you said registerd the dlls and the software soft resetted and got a different error 80042002 HTTP Forbidden

I'm sorry but can't say what the problem is.
Just in case this is my account configuration (after the initial configuration I edited the address on the first page to the correct value, maybe you should try this too).
It sounds to me as though the people with the problem of cellular data connection kicking in when there is a valid wifi connection ought to examine the settings in whatever application is playing up.
e.g. someone mentioned that pocket outlook opens a 3G connection instead of using the wifi connection. In this case go into email settings (windows messaging application, menu/options then choose the email account that is causing the problem) click on "edit account setup" then press "next" 3 times and press on "advanced server settings". Check what is set under "Network connection:" In order to use the currently available connection this must be set to "The Internet" If you have set it to your cellular data connection for instance "orange internet" it will always use that connection and ignore the wifi.

I can only choose "Internet" under email settings and not my cellular data..?
The options I have are:
Orange WAP
Orange MMS
Orange Internet
Work
The Internet
I ended up just putting in my hotmail details manually using POP3 and set it to use the pop3.live.com:995 and smtp.live.com:587 rather than this whole HTTP issue with SSL and authentication for outgoing and inbound mail. "The Internet" for the network connection to use and made sure it leaves messages on server so now it'll sync without removing them off the inbox and uses the wifi first rather than the 3G.

I have Telenor/Vodaphone in Sweden and am having similar difficulties. It works well to use "The Internet" if I am on a wireless network. However, if I am without wireless I get connection error and have to switch network to "Telenor Internet" for it to work. Can anyone help out?
I'm currently trying to resolve this same issue on my girlfriend's MWg Zinc II running WM6.1.
The strange thing is, I have a Samsung Omnia, also running 6.1, with (as far as I can tell) the exact same setup for email and connections, but I don't have this issue.... ie when I'm connected to wifi and I sync my hotmail, it uses the wifi connection and does not try to connect using cellular data.

On both phones, when I "choose the email account", the next screen to appear is the Windows Live settings screen (where you cannot select the options you mention), not the standard email settings screens... so this method does not work for me.

I've had the same problem on my new Touch Pro 2 on T-Mobile, but didn't have it with my Vodafone v1615 (HTC TyTN II).
If you still have this problem, may be worth taking a look at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4063850&postcount=4
This has fixed my problem.
I have had this problem with windows live for over 4 years, all other applications will use wifi over 3G if its available.
Windows live will only use 3G, which is an absolute nightmare when traveling as i dissable data and make use with WIFI in hotels and cafes.

Connection manager and proxy servers.

My device is simple smart-phone with windows mobile 6.1 professional operating system. I have a problem with the connection manager and proxy servers. Let me explain my problem.
My application needs to get some date from the Internet. I use for that GRPS connection. But I need to specific WAP connection with PROXY. Below I put all steps which I do to make that kind of connection.
1. "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Connections"
2. Click the "Connections" icon.
3. Click the "Advanced" tab.
4. Push the "Select Networks" button.
5. Push the first from the top "New" button.
6. Enter a name for new connection (for example "mywap").
7. Push the "Modem" tab.
8. Push the "New" button.
9. Enter a name fro the connection (for example "mywapcon").
10. Access point name (for my operator is "wap").
11. Click the "Next" button.
12. Enter a user and password (both "wap").
13. Click the "Finish" button.
14. Click the "Proxy settings" tab.
16. Check the "This network connects to the Internet" box.
17. Check the "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet" box.
18. Click the "Advanced..." button.
19. Click the "HTTP" item on the list.
20. Enter the "Server" host (for example "proxy.host.eu") and "Port" number (for example "8080").
21. Click "ok" button.
Now, I have a new connection which I can use in my application to connect to the WAP Internet with proxy. Below I put the steps which I make to request for my application about proxy and connection.
1. To get a GUID to my new connection I use the "ConnMgrEnumDestinations" method.
2. This GUID I use to make a request to the connection manager. I use for that the "ConnMgrEstablishConnectionSync" method. When the connection occurs the method above returns the handler to the my connection.
3. Now, I try to check about proxy servers to my connection. I'm using for that the "ConnMgrProviderMessage" method and a returned hander.
I read about that a lot of articles but it still don't work correctly. When I call the "ConnMgrProviderMessage" in the step 3, the operating system returns my the "E_NOINTERFACE" error. I don't know why because I defined the proxy server for this GUID connection.
Did you have that kind of problems in your applications ?? Can you help me ??
