Hello everyone, Ive been a long time reader of xda, have an htc advantage, htc touch dual, and an htc wing. I have flashed more roms to my advantage than i could ever remember, sadly I forgot my old username so here I am with a new one
Lately I have only been using my advantage as a bedside alarm clock, and I want to try Android. I prefer the body lines of the hero, but I would like the future option of using 3g. I am in Alaska and using tmobile. I would like to switch to ATT at some point in the future, and currently there is NO 3g service where i am in alaska with either providers. From what I can tell, the Rogers version of the magic is hands down the one to get if you want to run the hero rom. Ive read many posts that say it lags with the 192mb versions. I also want to get as full of a google experience as possible...OTA updates, Access to the Android Marketplace, google maps etc. Can anyone confirm that if I purchased an unlocked rogers magic off ebay, would I be able to get OTA updates over an edge connection in the USA? I do believe that the rogers magic should have the bands to work with ATT 3g right? As I said, there is no 3g service here, but when i switch to ATT later, and travel I would like to utilize the 3g. Just looking for some insight on what will more than likely be my next phone. Planning on purchasing tonight if we can come up with some answers!
The Rogers Magic will run on AT&T but not on T-MO.
You get access to the Market but not paid apps, you'll have to root to get full access.
You wont get OTA updates from Rogers, I'm a customer and they told me no go on OS updates. Have to contact HTC for that, but if your rooted does it matter?
Flash the latest/greatest ROM.

ok well The Rogers has the 288MB you want:
and it also works on tmobile edge but on 3G however it works on att edge/3G. so if your thinking of swicthing over to att than this is the phone for you.
Ok, so if I root the phone, then I would have complete access to the android market? If purchasing an unlocked Rogers Magic, do i need to worry about getting one of the "perfect spl"s that isnt rootable yet, or is that only an issue for other versions?
Yep you'll have full access if you install "Market Enabler" after you root. I have not heard of any Rogers Magic haveing the "perfect SPL" I think so far it's only for the MyTouch and Hero.
Clinton
ClintonH is correct all available Roger Magics in the market are rootable.
Awesome, thanks for the great information. Looks like I will be purchasing one from ebay this weekend, unless you guys can recommend any reputable online shops to order from. I'll be just using the edge connection on it for a little while until i figure out how im going to get outta my tmobile contract...I currently have two active numbers under my contract with tmobile Not in much of a hurry though as i'll only be able to utilize the 3g when im travelling.
I actually have one fs on Ebay right now. Check out dgravo27 . It is the Rogers version.
Looks like yours isnt for sale anymore Dgravo, I just bought it! Too many other ones listed with 288 mb ram, however, they have the vodaphone logo and I dont think half the sellers even know whats inside their phones.
I am aware that the Rogers version of the Magic will work fine with AT&T but I really want an unbranded version. Where can I get the unbranded with 850/1900 3G US frequencies? I am ready to buy either one but want to see prices on the unbranded before I jump to the Rogers. Anyone want to offer suggestions? Anyone got one to sell?

I think the Rogers is your only route. Its the one i have; and really if you're gonna be rooting and changing the ROM's theres no way to tell it was ever a Rogers branded device, albiet from the Rogers logo on the back cover.
You can buy new battery covers that will replace the one with the "Roger's" name. If you're in the U.S. ever single T-Mobile store will have a variety of choices to choose from. They are for the myTouch but it's the same case The front of the Roger's phone doesn't say Rogers, instead it says HTC.
I went to the tmo store yesterday and got a "skull" battery cover (for $20!!!) and tried it on before leaving the mall, in seeing that it didnt fit quite right, iI returned it. If you have a Rogers Magic, it wont fit. That is if you're wiling to strip or break the plastic slides jamming it on. Sad. I was looking forward to leeching off the Tmo launch of the less capable myTouch...
Oh no! I had no idea. Why is the mytouch a lesser phone? Does it not have 288mb of ram?

Read around, it only has 192mb of RAM and is not rootable yet either.
not lesser just crippled.

Oh wow, I just assumed that since it was a new released phone here in the US it would at least be the same specs as the Roger's version. Looks like I assumed wrong
I have AT&T, and i've heard I needed a rogers phone to be able to use all the features of the phone.
Theses are the cheapest 32a (288 ram correct?) HTC magics that i've found.
Why is one cheaper than the other? The one that doesn't say rogers, should I be able to use fine?

thank you
I believe vodafone only carries the 32B variant and would not support ATT3g anyway.
I think they do 900/2100 bands.
Only Rogers has the ATT bands, which makes sense since it used to be Rogers-ATT wireless.
I actually have a Rogers Magic and a T-mobile myTouch. I have to say that the performance is indeed better on the Magic. However, the ATT3g network is really not that big a deal. I can save a few seconds here and there, but nothing to really write home about.
Ok ok so I really want this phone but I don't care for the look of the Sprint version here in the states. It's fatter and bland, tacky looking... I'd like to get an imported one and use it on either T-Mobile or AT&T... I've heard some folks say that only Edge is possible on AT&T with the current model that's out but I'm wondering if you guys know any different? I'd be willing to use this on T-Mobile US or AT&T as long as I could get the 3g speeds... Are there any version of the Hero out right now or that have been confirmed coming out in the near future (within the next 30 days) that will be able to be used on AT&T or T-Mobile?
No - what you've heard is correct. At present, if you're in the US and want a Hero with 3G, it's either the Sprint Hero or nothing. However, there isn't really a whole lot of difference hardware wise between the Hero and the MyTouch 3G.
Regards,
Dave
I've read that the hardware is similar but I was kinda pining for the Sense UI which is what really got me excited about Android... before that I wasn't a huge Android fan. I'm all about the UI
I wonder if there is a way to install sense on a mytouch? Also as far as I know the US version of all other android phones only come in white and not black or dark gray which is what I would want. I could be wrong about that though.

There are custom Hero roms for the MT3G.
Well the main reason I wanted the European version aside from the 3g instead of the CDMA was the look of the hero... the MT3G doesn't have the chin and thin/sleek design that I like.
the hero wont work at all in the US? or just no 3g?
I am currently using the Hero on AT&T, you will not get the 3G band. The phone works great on Edge and I dont seem to see any speed difference from my 3GS Iphone.

how's it working out for you? i recently bought a Hero and i was deciding between that and the iPhone 3GS (coming from a HTC Touch Pro / Windows Mobile user). i'm also on AT&T so i' going to be going from 3G to Edge.
I would wait...

Note that this is a different model than the CDMA version that Sprint has. I think there are 3 possible things that will happen:
The Hero will be sold in an unlocked North American version.
The Hero will go to AT&T.
The Hero will go to Rogers, the Canadian mobile company that currently sells the Dream and Magic/Sapphire.
i have a problem. my hero arrived yesterday and i have at&t (us) and under phone status it works just fine. it shows i'm running edge, phone calls work. but when i try to go online and use any kind of data connection it doesn't work, anyone know what's going on? everything works on wifi but it doesn't pick up a data connection on edge when it says edge on phone status.
FIXED: nvm, i figured out i had to input the APN settings manually since the phone came unlocked from China.
Just buy a rogers HTC Magic and put one of the many hero roms on it. The rogers one has the same 3g bands as at&t. The only difference is the 3.5 not there and only a 3MP camera but I really don't see a difference in the 3MP and the 5MP. Atleast not from the magin & hero compared.
I am planning to buy a HD2 just to run android on it. I have the option to buy TMob HD2 (bigger RAM and ROM) and the HTC HD2 (smaller RAM and ROM).
Am sure that almost all the Android ROMs work on both phones. I just want to know, which of these runs android better?
I really like Desire HD but its currently very expensive here (~US$ 710) and I don't want to spend that much. whereas HD2 (both Tmob and HTC) is available for ~US$ 435. So am thinking of buying HD2.

If you're from the US, you should get a TMO HD2 for sure, they're the only ones you'll have 3G possibilities with, and you have more internal memory. EDIT: That's assuming you have TMO as provider. If you don't, you won't get 3G on your TMO phone.
If you live outside the US, you'll need an HTC (well, they're both HTC of course) if you want 3G, but you can still use a TMO for everything but 3G if you really like to have that 512mb extra internal memory (not the best choice if you ask me).
If you're Australian, I'm not really sure what you should do because I think they have an even different version.

not sure where ur from , if your from ASIA T mob is the deal coz u get 3G!!, well u can actualy gte one on XDA for as low as 250$
If you are in the US and have ATT, get the Telstra/Australia version as it has support for ATT's 850mhz 3g band I think. Just depends on where you're located and what carrier you have. I would go with the version that I could receive 3g service on.
Get TMOUS HD2
I don't know what you guys are thinkin but all hd2's are tmobile in america. so if your from another country than this question is legit but if your in america all hd2's are htc and tmobile branded.

Yeah, but you can still order one from Australia, which will allow you to get 3g with at&t in USA.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I am from Pakistan and there is no 3G here. my only concern is the performance of both variants. with more RAM and ROM, does TMO HD2 perform better as compared to the HTC HD2 while using android?
For Australian HD2 be aware the "Next G" version is model 9193 ( 850 - 2100mhz), you can still get the 8585 model that has different frequencies that are 900Mhz - 2100mhz. This is not great for Australia as there is the Next G network from Telstra (works well everywhere with minimum 3G but H in metro) and the 3G network (3G in metro areas and normal edge network elsewhere).
You need to check which model you are getting as there has been an influx of 8585 models available on ebay.
I'm in the US and had the Euro version of the HD2 several months before getting my TMUS phone. I tried every Winmo ROM available on both, finding no discernable difference in performance. I can't address any potential performance differences in Android however as I sold my Euro phone prior to Android builds being introduced.

There will be no difference when running android. Only difference between phones is 3g radio and rom size. Rom size will give more storage space once android can be installed on rom, but there will be no difference in performance.
