Tons of articles on it, but here is one anyways:

My question is: Since I already have the T-Mobile G1 unlocked and using it on Rogers, I wonder if they're either going to support the frequency of 3G that my phone supports, or if the Rogers G1 will have the different frequency. Hope they release more details soon so I know if I should sell this one to grab one that I can actually get 3G on :S
Any thoughts?
I wonder pow much they'll rape yu for data charges.
I used to live in Vancouver, and know what a rip-off data charges are up there.

** this says that rogers has the 1700/2100 AWS spectrum in Canada. Presumably, the Dream and Sapphire (there is no such thing as a "G1" -- this is a TMOBILE-ONLY rebranding of the Dream) launch will coincide with the enablement of this network.
Oh, you'll note how much they paid for AWS.... "In total, Rogers will pay $999,367,000."
heh heh... nearly a billion smackers, but they've got 20 MHz in all areas of the country.
no, rogers is 850/1900. so im hoping i can get it on AT&T 3G. that would be so awesome

You, I'm sorry to say, are an IDIOT.
If you would actually read the whole thread, you would see that no, Rogers also owns rights to a 20 MHz spread of the 1700/2100 AWS band as well, which they will presumably be launching with the Dream. Why pay a BILLION DOLLARS for something if you're not going to USE IT?
True
So June 2nd G1 from T-Mobile can use 3G ?!
what about fido?!
I'm waiting for $30/6GB data plan
its like... almost unlimited
nothings for sure yet...
either rogers will start running the new band that t-mobile runs, or the devices have a different radio compatible to rogers' current 3g band
update: seems like the Canadian HTC Dream will run on AT&T / Rogers 3G bands:

the 3G wont work with the tmobile version. different bands for 3G.
I am aware that the Rogers version of the Magic will work fine with AT&T but I really want an unbranded version. Where can I get the unbranded with 850/1900 3G US frequencies? I am ready to buy either one but want to see prices on the unbranded before I jump to the Rogers. Anyone want to offer suggestions? Anyone got one to sell?

I think the Rogers is your only route. Its the one i have; and really if you're gonna be rooting and changing the ROM's theres no way to tell it was ever a Rogers branded device, albiet from the Rogers logo on the back cover.
You can buy new battery covers that will replace the one with the "Roger's" name. If you're in the U.S. ever single T-Mobile store will have a variety of choices to choose from. They are for the myTouch but it's the same case The front of the Roger's phone doesn't say Rogers, instead it says HTC.
I went to the tmo store yesterday and got a "skull" battery cover (for $20!!!) and tried it on before leaving the mall, in seeing that it didnt fit quite right, iI returned it. If you have a Rogers Magic, it wont fit. That is if you're wiling to strip or break the plastic slides jamming it on. Sad. I was looking forward to leeching off the Tmo launch of the less capable myTouch...
Oh no! I had no idea. Why is the mytouch a lesser phone? Does it not have 288mb of ram?

Read around, it only has 192mb of RAM and is not rootable yet either.
not lesser just crippled.

Oh wow, I just assumed that since it was a new released phone here in the US it would at least be the same specs as the Roger's version. Looks like I assumed wrong
I've decided to take the leap from win mo to android and want to purchase the Magic as my frist android device, however I'd like some help choosing which model i want, as there a few variants..
first of all i'm on a small wireless carrier which uses t-mobiles 3g bands (1700/2100) but i would like to buy a 32a model for the extra ram..however, after some searching the models that ive seen and should be 32a ones, only have the 900/2100 hsdpa bands..
So my question is, is there a 32a variant of the Magic that also has the 1700/2100mhz hspda bands?
No one knows where or if it is even reasonably obtainable?
I cant seem to find anything and doubting if it even exists...
There is a limited edition one coming up soon with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Actually you could get yourself an htc ion, the one that was given away at the Google IO conference. Its htc branded so it has the 288 ram, this is what me and a friend did and its a noticeable difference. Now when we load custom roms its a lot snappier. Your best bet would be to look on ebay.

We all wish. Ions don't have 288 ram, they have 192 just like the MT3Gs. I have an Ion, they're all 192. Do some searching and you'll find confirmation and ways to check your own phone through adb.

Google Ion is unfortunately hardware-identical to the MyTouch 3G. I'm pretty confident that there aren't any 32a models that support T-Mobile 3G. I wish it were easier to mix-and-match features, but unfortunately we're stuck with the models that they decided to make and there's too many variables for all combinations to be made.
My wife has had her G1 for less than a week, and i really love the phone.
Now, the only thing i noticed, is that i do not use the keyboard that much, or rather, that i prefer a screen keyboard.
I know i do not need to use the keyboard on the G1, but i think the myTouch is thinner without keyboard.
So, i was wondering,
1) is the myTouch 3G basically a G1 without keyboard? is it thinner than the G1?
2) what model is the one to be soft-rooted (i don't want to do test points, or similar complications).
3) 3G is quadband, meaning, it would work on AT&T?
4) Would most Firmwares work on it?
Thanks!

1) The Mytouch 3G has better battery life and more ROM memory, the Mytouch is thinner than the G1.
2) 32B Mytouch 3G (the one without the headphone jack, although I'm not sure what you mean by soft-rooted. If you mean easier to root, then get the 32B Mytouch.
3) Yes, but you would only get EDGE service, and you would have to unlock it.
4)1.5 and up work, I'm not sure how 2.1 ROMs are on the 32B.

I mean that i want to do the "root" myself, and i do not want to have to solder anything. So, all the myTouchs can be rooted? How difficult are the others?
Checking the AndroidSPIN DB, it looks like the 32B is the one with most of the ROMs, and the 32A (Fender?) has just a few ROMs, and no 2.x ones, making the 32B the one to get. I'm right? Any explanation why? How can i make sure i get the 32B's?

Why? If it is quadband, shouldn't it work on AT&T? (Actually on Claro in Argentina) For example, the Roger/AT&T Nexus One, works 3G in Argentina.
get a rogers magic (32a) better than mytouch as it has more ram
also there are tons of roms for 32a ... pretty much all 32b/g1/mytouch roms are available with kernel port
Good to know. But if i do not want a keyboard?
the rogers magic does not have a keyboard.. it looks identical to the mytouch..
EDIT: i should call it the HTC Magic 32a as there are other carriers than rogers who carry it, i just happen to be on rogers..
also both the mytouch and magic are fairly easy to root, relatively similar in difficulty ...

The Roger's HTC Magic uses the same 3G bands as AT&T US phones, so it would work for 3G service. The 32B Mytouch, does not, it uses different 3G bands.
Lets try yo sumarize.
I want: Android phone. ROOTEABLE WITHOUT HARDWARE MODIFICATION.
Nice to have: AT&T compatible 3G.
CANDIDATES
Dream/G1: KEYBOARD.
T-Mobile version is NOT compatible with AT&T 3G.
Rogers version IS compatible with AT&T 3G.
ALL VERSIONS ROOTEABLE WITHOUT HARDWARE MOD. ?????
myTouch: NO keyboard.
T-Mobile version is NOT compatible with AT&T 3G.
Rogers version IS compatible with AT&T 3G.
32A & 32B ROOTEABLE WITHOUT HW MOD. ?????. 32A VERY FEW ROMS. ?????
Magic 32a: NO keyboard.
Rogers version IS compatible with AT&T 3G.
32A ROOTEABLE WITHOUT HW MOD. ?????
I'm correct about them? Any other suggestions?

yes it is rootable without hw mod, i dont know any phone that requires hardware mod to root
32A VERY FEW ROMS. ?????

and the 32A has TONS AND TONS OF roms just look in the dev section of this forum... even the newer mytouch 1.2 (32a w/ headphone jack) has roms now...
So all 3 (Dream, myTouch, Magic), on all versions (32A or 32B) are rooteable with more or less simple sw mods?
When i searched the androidspin db, the 32A myTouch had only 4 ROMs listed, while the 32B myTouch had 10 times more. Or what i'm missing?
So, with AT&T compatible 3G, myTouch and Magic would fill my requirements?
EDIT: on ebay the MAGIC & MYTOUCH are listed together as the same phone. What i'm missing?
first off not all roms are on android spin, just look in this forum, right here, right where you are, no where else, its all here.. ill even link to it (Look at all the threads that have 32A in front of them, all roms)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=493
the mytouch is basically a google branded magic with different guts than a non-google branded magic. they look IDENTICAL and you can not tell them apart other than the "google" on the back of the phone, or by going into fastboot..
when buying on ebay ask the purchaser if it is a 32A device or a 32B device.. or just get a "Rogers Magic" and you are guaranteed its a 32A device.. which i would highly recommend as it has twice the ram as the mytouch (32B) devices...the MyTouch 1.2 , which is a modified 32A, also has roms available, however not as many (yet), you can see those in the forum above listed as (MT3G 1.2, LE, Fender), all roms listed as (32A) are for the original 32A and NOT the MyTouch 1.2 32A
and yes. all 3, well 4 including the MyTouch 1.2, devices can be rooted by softmod,

Great explanation.
So basically, all Rogers phones have UMTS 850/1900, correct, and the one i should get is the Magic Rogers, or any Magic 32A with UMTS 850/1900.
*** HTC Dream ***
T-Mobile G1 = UMTS 1700/2100 MHz
Dream Rogers = UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
*** HTC Magic ***
32A (288MB RAM): Rogers --- T-Mobile myTouch 3G v1.2
32B (192MB RAM): T-Mobile myTouch 3G --- Vodafone Magic --- Google Ion
Rogers UMTS 850/1900 --- T-Mobile UMTS 1700/2100
Digital, PLEASE take time to research what you are telling this man. He almost went a spent 300 - 400 dollars on a new phone just to find out he wouldn't be able to root it. That's pretty messed up, man.
Rogers take JTAG to root. After the 911 update, there is no root. Only with hardware modification.
So if you buy a rogers now, no you will NOT be able to root without a hardware modification.
By a T-Mobile myTouch. MUSH easier to root. 32a might have better specs, but you're going to be stuck stock.
You CAN go with a fender which is 32a, but you won't have much ROMs as digital pointed out.

Crap. So, if I understand, we have:
1) Magic Rogers - 32A - 288MB RAM - JTAG to Root - Many ROMs.
2) T-Mobile myTouch 3G ORIGINAL - 32B - 192MB RAM - SW Root - Many ROMs.
3) T-Mobile myTouch 3G v1.2 NEW - 32A - 288MB RAM - SW Root - FEW ROMS - Also called FENDER or LE.
The one WITH the 3.5mm headset jack is the NEW myTouch from T-Mobile?
What about the HTC Dream from Rogers? Any recommendations on that?

Both Rogers are unrootable as of now. ONLY with JTAG. If you want a Magic, I highly suggest finding a Google ION, if you can't, a plain 'ol myTouch 3g 32b.
Yes, your chart is right.
Edit: RAM isn't THAT noticeable. I'm running newest cyanogen with NO swap and my phone flies. Thats just my opinion, though. Not really a "fact."
Great. Thanks.
Isn't it the Google ION the same as the HTC Magic from T-Mobile? Or is a Magic from Rogers?
So, one last question. I don't have a T-Mobile/Rogers card, and with the G1, i had to do some tricks to activate without 3G (connect to the PC and do some ADB tricks i found here).
Would i be able to activate in Argentina with another SIM somehow?
EDIT: just to make sure, the myTouch WITH the 3.5mm headset jack is the NEW myTouch from T-Mobile, the one that has FEW ROMs yet, right?

Google ION is just HTC with NO T-Mobile bs on it. But, yes, it's pretty much the same.
I really don't know about activation, man. I live in the U.S. Couldn't help you, sorry.

Do you know if the ION will require activation?
What do you mean "require activation?" EVERY phone has to be activated. It doesn't just come with service.
Meaning no need to activate because is a developer phone, or that you can bypass it, like you do with moded ROMs.
This seems to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=588293&highlight=activate
I have recently purchased a 32A Three branded HTC Magic (Hutchinson Australian Phone Providor).
After a bit of research, I have noticed the Magic was released with 850mhz support from Rogers in Canada. Most other releases sold in the US, EU, UK etc did not support this band.
As Three roams on Telstra's 850mhz network, I was wondering if anyone who owns a Three HTC Magic can verify whether the Three version does? (I am aware the Vodafone 32B version doesn't)
If so, when I plan to root the phone and load a new ROM, will I lose 850mhz support if i upgrade the Radio firmware?
If that is the case, what is the best and/or newest Radio I can use on the HTC Magic that supports 850mhz? (as I need the ability to roam).
Eventually I would like to try one of the Gingerbread or at least Froyo releases on it.
Any advice is appreciated.
