Ok im just reading things about android and this community. Im a user of windows mobile since 7 years ago and all windows enviroments more than that and know nothing about java and not trying to light fire on this here but i would really wanted to know what advantages can bring this new OS to the WM user. The hardware seems the same but i mean as there are so meny people here that came from WM i want to hear from them ....Why do they made the switch?
I have read about the multitouch and capacitive screen but what about, community support, apps, customization, overall feel as a phone and perpectives of the platform, issues to resolve......you name it.
Thanks in advance for your anwers

In short, just great. I Have been on tytn II, Diamond, Xperia - and im now on the HTC Magic. I feared i would miss the keyboard, but dont really, and the OS - it's just great.
No more waiting for screens to update, no more strange windows errors, all in all, im not looking back.

same as above. Absolutely loved my Kaiser and Dell X50 before that but love my new Android phone even more. I think the transition was even easier as I'm a big user of Google products (search, calendar, email, contacts) anyway.
me too love it had a htc touch and htc diamond before this! love the android now!
hows the overall responsiveness comparing it to WM?
is it true that we need the cloud (gmail etc) to be able to sync? what about outlook sync? its there support for office docs?... seems that is as upgradable cause i have saw many ROMs here..........thanx for the above answer
another: having a data plan is mandatory to use the phone?

The interface on the OS is dramatically better, but when it comes down to getting work done WinMo is technically more capable in a lot of ways. I prefer Android because it's just flat out more fun to use, but if you need to get serious work done with your phone then definitely do your homework before making the switch.
Mmm... ive been thinking yeah. thats why im asking
As you said the interface its just amaizing even to wm6.5 imo and interaccion with big capacitive screen is a plus indeed. but still havent got the gist...ill do more reading thanks as is going to be a major step and think to buy a phone for at least 1-2 years.
still open to others opinions.

I Started my PDA life on a Moto Q, then a Excalibur, Wizard, Kaiser, Diamond & Then to a Blackberry Curve (dont hate me it was only a couple weeks) & now on a g1 while waiting for my MyTouch 3G to arrive..
I Can tell you that basically everything is smoother & faster. Even when compared to TouchFlo the android interfact is easier & faster to access what I Want when I Want it then WinMo
I'm on WinMo for years, see my signature. I would say I'm a Power User with deep knowledge of WinMo. Switching to the Android powered HTC Magic was easy.
- The usability is much better, capactive screen is incredibly good (the resistive screen on the WinMo devices made me sick as I'm rather use fingers than the stylus)
- customizations + extensions through Android market are pretty good (Nitrodesk's Touchdown gives me the one major feature that I was missing on Android here in Europe: Exchange Sync)
- I'm missing nothing else from WinMo (compare the time MS had time to develop and enhance WinMo and the time Android devices are on the market), not even the very detailed settings options which seem to be good for Power Users, they are just unnecessary in the end.
-It is easy for developers to create and deliver applications
It is strange that MS as one of the pioneers in this market became just a "slow follower" and did not manage to turn the corner. It is the same as with the Iphone: even the first version is almost as good as WinMo, what about version 2.0 and 3.0...? Usability counts.

The problem windows faces with it's OS is that winmo is well understood. It's tried, tested, and true to it's followers. If they suddenly revolutionized the whole thing, people would get pretty angry. A lot of people who own winmo phones, own them for their business and development needs. These aren't the kind of people who want to **** around with sudden change to their previously solid operating system.
All that aside, I just moved from the Touch HD, to the Magic. I've gotta say, I love it. I'm an electronics enthusiast. I like to play with new technology. If you're all about trying something new, android is about as new as it gets. The best thing about it is, it's not some sort of gimmick, it's a real alternative to the way things are on windows mobile. That means that, while being completely different in a lot of ways, it can still do the same tasks.
Another thing to love about the android is how connected it is to everything via the marketplace. I do quite enjoy the selection of windows mobile software, but the method of buying it is very antiquated. Get out your credit card, shop around at a bunch of sites, find your app or game of choice, pay, download, install... So much trouble.
The Google Market feels solid, and is constantly updated with plenty of useful (or time wasting) apps. The best thing is, there's a huge selection of free apps. If you find something is missing from your phone, go to the marketplace (one click on the home screen) and do a search for it. You'll find something to solve your needs.
Another nice feature of Android devices is the ability to add widgets (or shortcuts) to your home screen. You also have three home screens available just by swiping your finger from left to right or right to left at the home screen. This means you can put all the apps, widgets, and shortcuts you want on the screen. AND you can arrange them in any orientation you'd like. Android IS customization at it's best.
The last thing I'll say about the Android platform is that thanks to the marketplace and the ingenuity of independent developers, you'll find apps that allow you to use your phone in ways you'd never even considered. Take the HTC Magic for instance, it's got a built in magnetometer (compass) that allows you to not only find yourself in google maps, but also see the direction you're facing and basically watch your phone while walking to your destination. You can SEE where you're going.
Another strange use of the magnetometer is done by an app called "Metal detector". I'm sure you can guess what it does. While I won't be out at the beach holding my phone out and searching for spare change, it's still kinda cool showing your office mates what your phone is capable of by identifying metal wiring in walls, or whatever.
What I'm trying to express with all of this is simple, the Android platform is a greatly different experience from winmo, if you're looking to crave some new tech, take the plunge. But remember, it's a whole other ball game, which means it takes a little bit to get used to.
I recommend doing what I did, get all excited about it before you pick it up, that'll ensure a lot of smiles when you turn your new Android device on for the first time.

All i can say is..
Had the Touch, Diamond, Xperia...
Play with more because of my job....
But Android is a breath of fresh air..
Nice integration, nice looks, response nice, love the market... i,m happy i switched.
Only thing i miss a little bit is messing with some settings and registry...

I totally agree, except with this:
"The problem windows faces with it's OS is that winmo is well understood. It's tried, tested, and true to it's followers. At least for me, as a WinMo "Power End User" (private and in business) it was easy to switch. I think that a) the number of true hardcore business users is too small for WinMo to survive and b) Android will very soon provide the missing features and capabilities to those users. Let's face it: there are only a few things missing for company use like (native) Microsoft Exchange Sync and this is already available in some countries and will IMHO soon be available for all. MS Office support is next that will come I think. 3rd party software is already there. We will see...
I really liked what youve written here cause ive been doing some other readings and learning . First i wanna thank you all for sharing your experiences. I should say than even knowing than android is still a bit immature i am very tempted, as all of you were at a moment, to give it a try. As you all have stated, its difficult to understand how ms being a almost a lonely leader together with palm for many years in the pda market, have been careless about the usability and interface of their os and the convergence and integration of features from pocket pc to smartphone have been slow ihmo. Apple for example did a very good job in a relatively short time taking a successful concept like the ipod onto production of a very usable product like the iphone that, we like it or not, is today still a bomb after some years in town. Google nowadays have only 3 devices on the market as far as i know, and improvements and updates have come fast. I saw the sense ui in the new htc hero and even though it resemble touchflo3d seems a refreshed finger friendlier version.
For winmo imo, dont think that lacking the marketplace is going to be a disadvantage for long time as ms is going to have one like every major player already did, but once again a little late. Same with compass and other cool features many ppl enjoyed. I see winmo as a very strong os with many many capabilities and it has served me well over all these years. I love integration with apps i use like office, pdf readers, outlook sync for contacts, task, emails, .net framework, flash support, the ability to be tweaked and customized and above all the support of this community which ive became a fan of. Also i have read da vinci code and saw some episodes of dr house and prison break in my phones. But no matter how many third party apps and shells you through on it to avoid dealing with the old fashioned pc like interface, at the end every user will have to deal with that. There is a performance cost in installing many apps as enhancements to the shell, as in any os, instead of just having these visual features as part of the standard api, because they have to run concurrently with the basic shell and that makes your interaction slower and slower. So mostly i have to admit that winmo interface and today screen basically today lacks the level usability and simplicity of these newer os user interfaces. Thinking only in the techie capable or corporate user will probe to be a wrong strategy as blackberry’s rim realized at a time.

Android vs Win Mobile vs iPhone
Hi all,
I switch from HTC Touch to iPhone, later to HTC Magic and now I have a HTC Diamond 2.
As you can see WM -> OSX -> Android OS -> and WM again. WHY?
I really like gadgets and testing new platforms, but as I also use the phone for working, the best suite for me is WM.
Don't you need to work with excel, word, powerpoint and pdf documents?
With Androidyou have to buy 3party apps for this.
Don't you us Outlook? No native support for Android.
Don't you receive mails with attachments? No native support for saving them to the SD in Android.
Of course you can use other apps that can more or less solve those needs. But, why do we need to invent the wheel again?
And what about iphone? Really good hw, lovely OS but plenty of locks from Apple. You have to jailbreak, and install lots of 3party sw.
Conclussion: For professional use, WM has all you need just out of the box.
If I only could flash my HTC Magic with WM ..... sniff.
Bye.
Well i think ill keep my old friend for some more time and wait for now. i want to buy with a contract but with rogers now we only have xperia x1a... alternative is the g1 and the magic that without a keyboard has a point againts my personal preferences. xperia is way a better phone than the one i currently own of course but not sure yet because of lots of complainings about keyboard design, cracks and other issues in its forum. thank you all

Sadly, I miss the random errors in WinMo, because it reminded me, that just like XP and Vista, this is one of the true mobile os's. It will **** up, and it will do so with the ever annoying dialouge box.
Android, is different. the good different. Wait, the great different. Only problem Ive had is that rogers had to go and screw it up by flashing their terrific bs version onto what is one of the best phones I have used.
And the iPhone, please. I have one. Whoever considers that to be a 'OS'. Get your head out of the propoganda machine. The day it has at the least multitasking, and not that bull**** popup notification, i will consider it a OS.
Atleast with WinMo, and Android, there is a good sense of **** the **** around and if all fails reflash the rom to original. iPhone, you can jailbreak, screw around, but thats it.
Coming from a a Diamond, then a iPhone, to my current Blackberry and Android, I think I would rather have the latter two. Sure WinMo and the iPhone are great 'in the middle devices', but in the end when I have serious business to do, I stick with the blackberry, because nothing beats it, everybody knows that. Business = blackberry. WinMo and the iPhone sound like a good choice, but anyone worth their butter knows that a keyboard of a blackberry can save your professional ass. And Android I like, because like WinMo it is truly open to no end, and my fun lies with screwing around and messing with that phone. Sure not the best money spent, but Android phones are more explorative and user friendly then anything else. Ramblings of a idiot maybe, but its more, what really floats your boat. My friend said 'avoid the magic, and the dream. the magic isnt that easy to use, and the dream just looks like shreks ****' but i splurged and I love it. 50/50, sure. But its what YOU want out of your phone.

You called the android platform immature.. Well you are both right & wrong.. Yes it is in its development stages still where WinMo is still very mature..
But its like saying that the Virgin High School Validictorian who doesn't drink or smoke is Immature where as the 40 year old drunken drug addict who lives with his parents is more mature because he is old enough to buy cigs & beer..
There on 2 different playing fields.. Switching was soooo easy once I finally made the plunge.. & I Find that even with my diamond I Was resetting the phone once every few days.. My Android once every few weeks..

As you I do love messing up with a phone... I got infected with this disease here . Flashing woow ... lets you change the face and performance in minutes, new styles, apps, things to try. That left out iphone and blackberries cause they cant keep up with that. Nothing against them really, I know they are really good at what theyre meant to, but I make changse and update very often always trying to get the most out of the thing. Official updates arent enough for me. Agree with u that pre-emptive true multitasking is an asset but mentioned the iphone as an example of responsive and coherent interface. Have friends that cant live without their iphones but have to admit that all of them took it for trendy reasons without even reading a review and were astonished cause they all came from dumb phones.

Yeep inmature relative not only to age but number of devices in market right now and os released nothing more I think. But i got your metaphor. Im not saying its more or less stable.... just dont know Its a way of saying is a very young OS relative to WinMo. Indeed seems that, as you said, switching to android is easier than making the trip to WinMo and that was my point because this learning curve have to do mainly with the interface been intuitive and coherent .... dont you think?
BTW did you know any fact or feature you think make android more stable os than winmo? Or its just a feeling?
Opinions ........

I am stuck on some "fun" apps I have which are M$...such as Insaniquarium. I love my ebooks which are on repligo or pdf.
I am a busy mom to 9 year old twins...my dinosaur Wizard has been a stable friend for almost 4 years. On road trips I hand it to a kid to watch a movie, or listen to MP3s, or to play one of 20+ games I have installed. It serves as my phone book, scheduling manager, I've even used it to create a last minute presentation.
I am looking to move to the My Touch, as old reliable has seen better days...but I am needing the same abilities as I listed above.
Will I get this with Android?? On the Tmo site it says it sync's with M$...so can I run my M$ based apps on it (like Insaniquarium), or will I have to buy something new, and or settle for not having a favorite app?
Any help you can give would be appreciated. For my needs, will the My Touch be a nice fit, or should I consider buying a used Kaiser from e-bay?
Thanks in advance.

I originally started my love affair with Windows Mobile in my early teens when I received a Compaq Ipaq for which I had no real need for at the time. I then progressed to an Artemis (XDA Orbit), later a Touch Cruise (XDA Orbit 2) and finally last year a Rhodium (Touch Pro 2). While aware of Android's rise, and almost purchasing a Hero at the time I bought my Rhodium, I stuck to what I knew best.
At the time I believed my choice to have been the correct one. While the Hero looked pretty cool, I couldn't leave behind WM. I thought the TouchFlo 3D/Sense was beautiful (weather animations!), if only skin deep, and apps such as Coreplayer and FPSCE reinforced my belief that WM was still a relevant OS.
That was until I started playing around with the XDAndroid Port.
It was then I saw the potential of Android. The highly customisable interface, social network/google account integration, the awesome apps on the market and the speed of the webkit based browser! Everytime I returned to Windows Mobile I felt underwhelmed. I was never a fan of the iPhone however understood it had changed the game in regards to smartphones. Android was the best of both worlds, open source with a great community, fully touch UI with a growing appstore gaining support from major brands/developers.
While the Rhodium port was gathering pace, it was suffering from power management issues, backlight/wifi problems and most importantly, no sound. I knew from experience with the Touch Cruise that the progress was going to be slow but how long before a fully working port was available was anyones guess (Still not there!). It was then that I decided my days with Windows Mobile were coming to an end. Google had recently released the Nexus One which for me was perfect and after a few weeks of deliberating I made the jump and have never looked back.
Now I was always a vociferous defender of Windows Mobile but from the moment I got my first real taste of Android, I saw it for what it was. It hadn't really changed since that Compaq Ipaq and was so out of date it almost smelt off! I still have a soft spot for it, hence my lurking around the old boards seeing how you're all getting on. Since I heard about the breakthrough regarding the HD2 Android Port i've been looking on with great interest. It's fun reading through the threads and seeing people going through the same process that I did only a few months before.
Now I've seen a few posts where people have already stated that they are now seriously considering selling their HD2 and moving on to a "real" Android phone. My question is, how many more of you are there? Have any other people had the same change of heart now they have seen the possiblities?
Regards.
From the title of this article, I thought you meant the iphone 4!!
WM still does it for me - a mobile office, not a silly teenager's tweeting toy, it's still good, and I will use my remaining WM 6.x gadgets as long as they hold out.
When that happens which is probably in a year's time, I'll see what the market looks like, right now, it looks like it will mean a move to Android, but you never know WP7 might come through.
You never know, the iphone 4 may turn out to be a good phone.
rjstep3
I probably will. I like stability and if Android can stop my soft resets I'll be happy. Plus, I miss the apps. Even though it's infuriating to download the most popular task manager in the market place and to discover it has ads. Then you download the next one down and it also has ads.
I may be a little blind but Im sitting on the fence as Im sure many others are-
At the moment I have an unlocked HD2 for AT&T. This present me the following options:
1. Hold onto it for its beautiful screen, sexy home page, and accept the clunky deeper interface that is wm6.5 (Not trying to bash, its just not meant for finger friendly, and im also one of the users who suffers from slow texting issues and quick battery drains. Yes, ive tried the roms. Moving on.) The fact that I follow the Android for HD2 thread religiously shows that I am in the Android fan corner for HD2. This fact alone is one huge reason for staying power. Android on HD2 would extend the life of the HD2 dramatically. Meanwhile, WM6.5's screens past the homepage arent going to be getting any prettier.
2. Sell my HD2 Buy a Samsung Captivate since its AT&T's first true Android Smartphone and is getting rave reviews. Use my phone upgrade to get an Iphone4 for cheap, turn right around and sell it for 600 bucks (Yes, two have just sold in Phoenix for this much as well as on eBay). Be happy with my new Android phone and some extra spending cash for apps
3. Hold onto my HD2 until WP7 arrives and determine if I will use my upgrade for a new WP. If WP7 turns out to not be my cup of tea (But come on, XBOX Live and Zune integration? Im pretty much sold on that alone ) with any of the phones offered, then I shall resort to either option 1 or 2 above. I am still a huge fan of Windows Mobile, and I realize WP7 will be more akin to Apple in terms of closed source, but WP7 is what Windows needed to do. They needed to redo the deeper menus and make WM more finger friendly. Its the right step and I just hope they nail it.
Either way, Ive got my choices and am still completely on the fence. I just played around with the Captivate today and its quite an amazing and speedy phone. Not nearly as sexy as the HD2, but the functionality out of the box just felt great.
Im sure many of you are on the same fence as me and I wish you all the best in making your choice.
My contract runs out in Oct for my HD2 and I'll probably switch. Thats unless Navionics release their seachart app on Windows Mobile. if they do I'll just change to a sim only deal.
I bought the HD2 a few days ago on ebay. So far I've really enjoyed HTC sense and some other features
but the one thing I don't think I can live with is the crappy email program that comes with the phone. I absolutely hate it.
Generally speaking, I was impressed with winmo and found myself liking it despite all the negative reviews.
But I think I might switch over to the iphone.. plenty of apps, works pretty well with gmail... Otherwise I'll get some other android phone with HTC sense since thats really is a big thing for me. that and the led flash
I'm going on a 3 week trip to Europe... I guess I'll check out how far along the ports have come and then make my final decision then.
I disagree ... I was playing with Verizon's Droid X which is coming out soon - practically HD2 with Android (like EVO) and I'll tell you what: Android is one choppy OS - transitions wise iPhone wins all the way - I have HD2 and I am happy with it... it simply has better transitions then Android and what that means to the end user is most of the phone... If there is customization but the choppy one - no one will stick with it... And if 1GHz is not enough to make it smooth - I do not know then what is needed to make it smooth...
Great feedback guys! Just want to make it clear that in no way am I bashing the HD2 or WinMo, I just want to gather how many people who are using the Android port are now considering making a permanent switch. Obviously if a stable daily use ROM becomes available you won't have that problem (and I may even consider switching to HD2!!), but I succumbed to my impatience once I found myself using the unstable port more than my native WinMo OS.
Thanks for the response.
Android on HD2 isn't stable yet and won't be for a while.
I already had an Android phone before the HD2. I'm not really into the 'apps' scene or into social networking apps or games on my phone, so there isn't really much in Android for me. The google apps were better and it didn't slow down on txt messages.. but that's about it.
Android wouldn't play many video formats.. not sure if it could access my file server.. the pdf reader was poor quality.. the browser would forget all my tabs when memory ran low (probably not an issue on HD2..).. apps still crashed..
Despite WM's lack of polish in the UI and other things, I think I still like WM more. I'll probably still use WM more even if I install Android.
Just got 3 hd2's for the family. Wanted the highest spec'd winmo phone to give wp7 a chance. I haven't been that impressed with Android, apps still crash and with cht and max sense, I don't see what an android phone can do that my hd2 can't. Would never switch to at&t.
already made my choice and win mo and the hd2 won
why?...
i had a desire and hd2 for a week to trial both and although the desire was impressive i found the hd2 to be better for what i used a "phone" for...
video - more options (xvud, avi's etc) and better quality on hd2
camera - clearer and more detailed
apps - yes the android market has lots of apps but like iphone most of them are crap!, the only thing id use that winmo doesnt have is layar. winmo still has fpsece and a few more pieces of software thats unique (loving Meteor at the minute)
i also took the gamble that we'd have a decent working android port at some point anyway, are we likely to get some porting winmo on an android device? lol - not likely, so i figured that with the hd2 id got the best of both worlds and therefore more choice...
seriously, go back 2 years and you wouldnt have had the choice of different OS's on the same device. its a good job theres so many clever people in this community, they've really made a difference!

Too true. Whilst I really like my HD2 and most of its features suit what I do, WiMo (in my opinion) is now over looked when it comes to new apps. I already mentioned the Navionics seacharts app that i really want and having decided to try Skype, I go to the site to find thats dropped for WiMO. I can't wait for fully functioning dual boot WiMo/Android on my HD2. That would be phone heaven

apps - yes the android market has lots of apps but like iphone most of them are crap!, the only thing id use that winmo doesnt have is layar. winmo still has fpsece and a few more pieces of software thats unique (loving Meteor at the minute)
i also took the gamble that we'd have a decent working android port at some point anyway, are we likely to get some porting winmo on an android device? lol - not likely, so i figured that with the hd2 id got the best of both worlds and therefore more choice...
seriously, go back 2 years and you wouldnt have had the choice of different OS's on the same device. its a good job theres so many clever people in this community, they've really made a difference!

Noticed a few posts regarding the video playback options so thought i'd inform you all that Android now has just as many, if not more playback options than WinMo. That was the biggest single issue for me when I made the switch. I used TCMP and Coreplayer for years. Being a Usenet/Newsgroup subscriber, I download all of my content in xvid/x264 and being able to simply drag the files across to my phone rather than convert to .mp4 was a killer feature for me. I somehow JUST mangaged to get by converting the odd film or two for long train/coach journeys!
Luckily in the past month or so, a new media player has arrived called RockPlayer, which is the first legitimate xvid/wmv/x264/mkv/mov/asf etc. player on Android. The performance is great and the UI clean and simple. It may lack the deeper options of Coreplayer, however I only ever found myself playing with the rendering options etc. when I encountered laggy playback, albeit on less powerful devices than the HD2.
Anyway, video playback should no longer be a worry for anyone considering Android. However, if like me you are outside the US, there is no Android screen as large as the HD2 (No Evo 4G ) and for that reason, I look back at you guys with envy!!
Thanks again for the great response, it's great to see the range of opinions on the matter!
Regards.
Never gonna give it up never gonna let it down ! Win 6.5 HD 2
naaaah... I'll stick to hd2. I am just a winmo man I guess... maaaan... I love this device. who needs all those fart apps? the ONLY two apps I might miss are Plants vs Zombies and Rebirth (gotta love dat synth music ).
other then that - leo... a true king of the smartphones. lol
I can't wait for a flashable android rom for the hd2. tbh, i'm just bored with minmo now and everyone seems to be making apps for iphone or android these days.
The android port for the hd2 is what made me want to go back to android. So the other day I picked up the samsung vibrant lol. I still love my hd2 though still keeping it

Maybe im just different but why not have both? I am a tech guy who likes all platforms. I own 4 symbian phones, 2 winmo phones, and for games I own a ipod touch. I thought about android many times and was always waiting for the hardware to catch up and there are finally phones running android that have the specs I would like but they all went with cdma versions. So I will see what comes out in the future for a top spec gsm android. Another thing is I dont ever buy phones on contract and firmly believe that the carrier and phone you use should have nothing to do with each other. I bought my HD2 because I wanted a new winmo phone and there is no denying that the HD2 is the top choice for winmo. Remember no one phone will fill all your needs and manufactures do that for a reason, so you buy more phones... but this is where the consumer gets confused and think if they want new features they need a new phone, just have both! In the end though I will most likely stay away from android and go with a meego device for my linux phone kicks, as I am questioning why google feels the need to be around me 24 hours a day, in my search engine, in my web browser, in my computer OS, in my TV, in my phone? Call me old school but thats to much for me to give one company all my info, I like to keep it deverse among many companies so no one company knows everything about me. Again, maybe im just different?
Now I've seen a few posts where people have already stated that they are now seriously considering selling their HD2 and moving on to a "real" Android phone. My question is, how many more of you are there? Have any other people had the same change of heart now they have seen the possiblities?

Having owned the Iphone2 I returned to HD2 because in my opinion Apple delivers outdated technoloy, tries to control even media content and the information value of the Apple "Today" screen is exactly zero.
A great toy for "in"-people. After two days your tired of the fancy applications and start using apps which make sense. All of these you can get for WM. Since I have not used Android I wouldn`t dare to comment. But looking at pictures of the GUI it seems to be not very different from the HTC-Sense GUI.
All in all I see no need to think about anything else than HD 2 ! I´m afraid that WM 7 will rather be a step back in the direction of Apple. Lets hope for high value software development for WM 6.5.XXXXX
I´ll keep my HD2 for another generation, I´d say. I´m perfectly fine with this
brilliant device. The apps, mods and tweaks for Manila/Sense are what I would
miss, Android does not come with that much office related stuff I use and need.
In a year or so, we´ll see an updated iPhone 5 (or whatever they´ll call it),
we´ll know more about WP7, and HTC will have HD3 and other nice devices for us.
I´ll never again buy Samsung, their products are never really close to 100%,
they just make too many half-finished products at mediocre quality.
Motorola? Nokia? SE? No way. Therefore, no options for me.
Here's the thing ... I have been using winmo smartphones since the first SPV hit the UK. I have always loved them for their customisability (did I make that word up?) ... customisingness ... you know what I mean
With forums like this for constant tweaks and themes and apps and all sorts, winmo has been great for me. With an HD2 and sense 2.5 custom roms my phone does nearly everything I want it to ... phone/net/messaging/camera/music player/weather/twitter etc etc, and it does it in a very pleasing eye-candy laden manner, one which is customised to exactly the way I like it and is easily changeable when I get bored of looking at the same wallpaper/icons/taskbar/softkeys etc etc, which inevitably happens every few minutes.
Now, I know that winmo as an operating system sucks balls, but I am looking at the overall experience that I have with my phone - I gotta say that the HD2 is the fastest, most reliable phone I have ever used. The HTC sense stuff is probably the reason for most of it being good & looking nice.
So I find myself messing around with android, obviously which is noweher near finished, but you can get the general idea of it. Now, it looks very nice, and it seems to have some nice features ... but really, what is the main reason people want android so badly? I have looked around the android forums and seen that there are some custom roms & tweaks etc, but is it anywhere near as customisable as winmo?
Everyone seems so down on MS, and wondows 7 looks set to be another **** up, but look at the fun we have all had from winmo so far. Without the constant tweaking, customising, forum dwelling etc, I think a huge part of my mobile experience would disappear - the best part.
What do you guys think? Are there good reasons why android could be more fun than winmo in future? Does anybody still love their winmo experience ... even despite the actual winmo bits?
Let's talk.

I think many users are looking at Android, because it straddles the line between ultimate customizability (WinMo) and a modern touch-enabled application-rich OS (iPhone). While many of the tweaks for WinMo are to change the UI to suit the user, a large number are also needed for the smooth operation of the devices, which some don't want to bother with, myself included at times.
WinMo is fine for me, because it provides me an acceptable level of Exchange integration, decent web browsing and email support. However, Android provides those as well, in a more consistent experience, without as much need to worry about random bugs that plague the otherwise decent experience.
Hello Guys,
i am french.
i am using winmo since it starts. i have bought more than 20 phone devices.
actually i use the hd2 and i find it very great.
i see android also. i agree with you.
winmo is good because you can do everything or near with it.
but some great editors has decided not to continue dev on winmo like skype...
some great games also does not ported or developed on winmo like belote (french card game), sccrabble (in french), etc, and some great apps.
but i continue to say that winmo is great and with forum like here it grow everytime.
i hope that new devices like hd2, in future, winmo will find a place with a new terrible version.
there is a lot of things to say but the most important is that everyone have a prefered system and continue to compare them will permit to make a good choice.
thanks to xda... without you all, i don't know..

Yeah, I guess I am thinking of this in a purely selfish way. I imagine the part of the overall winmo ownership that bothers with all the tweaking is relatively small, so in the big picture I guess there are alot more people who rely on stock windows mobile roms that are lacking.
Is android that customisable? E.g can you edit icons on the programs list? Is it just a bit early and android will soon have all the tweaks that winmo currently has? I am hoping so because it is open source.

I agree with you about the developers. For a long time I thought that SBSH was the best software company around, but they abandoned their winmo apps in favour of iPone a long time ago and they lost pace with the htc sense/touchflo market and now their famous today apps are history, pretty much. Seems like many developers have/are abandoning winmo, looks from some reviews fo far that windows 7 will fail.
The key is that Windows Mobile as we know it is about to die a death - there is no support for it any more from either Microsoft or application makers. And from what we have read of the upcoming WM 7, Microsoft seem to have taken a leaf out of Apple's book in that it takes away a lot of the control from the user and is a whole lot less customizable, which is the main feature that appeals to the current WM user base. As such I strongly suspect WM 7's life cycle is going to be short as it seems to me it hasn't really got a target audience - people who want an easy ride and have their hand held buy an iPhone while people who want more control buy an Android device. Who is going to buy a WM7 device? Certainly not the current WM users as the differences are such that there is effectively no similarities beyond the name.
Android is by far the best operating system available on a phone in my opinion. It has the advantage of ease of use along with being highly customizable, the best of both worlds so to speak. It's support is increasing all the time (there are more Android devices than iPhones now) and with Google's muscle it's going to go from strength to strength.
Pretty much what everybody said. Mainly Pagnell made good point.
Let me make my little point too.
The thing why many wants ANDROID (including me, now that I have tried it) is that because Winmo remained the same for a long time. It's basic architecture and overall experience is aimed at older less powerful devise. I use my phone for entertainment and web browsing. The web expericence (opera 10) is imho the best of Handheld OSs, but entertainment lacks a lot. There are only few good looking games. There are even fewer which uses new technology as G-sensor. And multitouch is totally messed up because of the HTC.
So the main problem is, that Winmo aplications (and system as a whole) is aimed for larger scale of phones and in that sense doesnt provide good applications for the newest models (like HD2). Only Great entertainment app for WinMo that can stress HD2 is FPSEce which is also my best reason to stay with Winmo =)
The main reason why I stayed with WinMo is the ability to install applications to memory card... can't do that with the Android...
WinMo is not as bad as you think... check out the link:

I agree entirely. I think it's a shame what seems to be happening to winmo - I don't know how much credibility the forum-user community has ever had in the mobile devices world, but for me as a user it has been an exciting experience from day 1. My mobile experience has been interlinked with forums & customisation since day 1 and it has involved sharing a great deal with a great deal of people on the web. I have/do enjoy it as a part of the experience.
If android takes over as the place to be for all the fun of customising then so be it. MS should hang their heads in shame for allowing winmo to die off, but it has been fun.

You can with Froyo 2.2
I hate the only thing about Android that is really pain in the a$ - transition effects are LOUSY ... not comperable to iPhone and that is the biggest flaw of Andorid. Even WinMo Sense has better transition than Android... Tried EVO and X - LOUSY CHOPPY transition effects and not comparable not only to iPhone but not comparable to WinMo as well.
Moving from WinMo to Android, I realised that there is no equivalent of ActiveSync (or WMDC) for direct synchronisation to Outlook on the desktop. I prefer to keep my PIM info to myself and not rely on the cloud based services Google is encouraging.
Is there an Android equivalent?
Each system has its own benefits and drawbacks. With WM I can use offline gps maps with igo or tom tom, I can get great idle battery life, great outlook sync and several UI options with sense(max, cookie) or SPB Shell. Android is more sophisticated under the hood, looks and feels more smooth, has a great app market and is actively being developed and updated.
Having both of these on the HD2 is something other smartphone users will never have the opportunity to have.
I'm also tired of android and iphone users killing windows mobile. Most of them have never used it and aren't aware how well it can run. WM takes a little effort to get a custom rom and good software but its still a good system.
Indeed! Having both winmo & android on an hd2 seems an appropriate pay off for years of supporting mobile development on forums.

which runs on exactly how many devices??? (without rooting and running a custom ROM)
I really don't know why you guys say that winmo is more costumizable than android. I own a tmobile g1, nexus one, an HD2 and have owned other winmo phones and I can honestly tell you that android is as costumizable or more than winmo. IMO Android is superior in almost everything than winmo. Really the only reason I bought the HD2 was for the screen. I had never owned a phone with such a huge screen . You can't compare winmo to android port for HD2 since it is nowhere near finished. Just look at the G1/Dream forum, there are ALOT of roms, mods, themes, apps and tweaks for it even though it was the first android phone ever and has been left behind by much better and newer android phones. I'm a power user with my phones (even take it when going to restroom lol) and even though I love the HD2 hardware I can't leave android. I guess everyone gets used to a certain OS and it depends alot on a user's needs but I'm just giving you MY opinion and by a means I respect everyone else's opinion.
Right now, WinMo is way more customizable than android. Most android users that say android is as customizable don't even realize everything that is changeable and skinnable and customizable on winmo. Pretty much EVERYTHING on WinMo can be changed to look and act the way you want. It takes a lot of work and time and playing around to do it and get it working good, though.
WinMo is the most versatile mobile os available right now, imo. The main issue is that support and developers for it are coming to an end. It was always aimed more at business and power users and was never made user friendly enough and never advertised enough for the average phone user. WinMo was originally designed as a pocket pc os, then when phones and pocket pcs converged, phone functions were added to winmo. Android was designed as a phone os to begin with, and are adding more functionality as its developed, so its a lot more user friendly and understandable to the average phone consumer. Android is catching up in its versatility and functionality as it developed, and will one day be more functional than winmo, i'm sure. But WinMo is a great os to power users, business users, and people who know it well, and it will be a while before android matches it's versatility. I know many android fans will argue that, but I've used winmo for 8 years and android for more than 2 years... and I love them both... but I would pick winmo over android right now. In a year, I may change my mind as android is constantly being developed and has a LOT of apps, while WinMo is dying.
But the great thing with the HD2 and most current winmo devices is that we can run android also... so when I need to run a specific android app or just want to play around with android, I can quickly boot into it. You can't boot into winmo with android devices. I think I will be using my HD2 for a long time, as it's going to be probably the greatest winmo device ever made, and I'll be able to use android... and the way the devs are developing android on the HD2, I think it will actually be close to as functional as a native android device a lot sooner than I thought it would be. It's being developed quicker than any previous android port to a winmo device in the past.
As a avid android supporter and a owner of an hd2 I really like having both windows mobile and android.
with the recent port of Android to the hd2 I am happy to have my widgets back .
A lot of what I missed about android was its skinned interface. Sure windows is skinned but when you by pass sense you end up seeing the ugly windows ce look.
It drives me batty.
Also windows is dying. It is getting hard
er and harder to find apps. Those apps also dont get updated either.
I have no interest in windows mobile 7
And I had it with the iphone and any other apple products.
btw android is just as customizable as windows mobile. Much in the say ways .. atleast in my opinion
I would agree with mustang_3kgt, it also baffles me when people argue to get hd2 or to stick to it because it is very customisable since it is based on WinMo. I use my hd2 since february and i agree that it is customisable and it is pretty easy once you know what you are doing. But customisability of a phone in my opinion should not be measured by the mere ability to customise every single bit, but by the existing possibilities to customise. what i mean for instance is the number of themes available for hd2/sense 2.5. as far as i know there are just 4 themes: GTX, Fallout, Buuf and Anastasia, thats it. yesterday i checked nexus 1's forum and on the first page i bumped into 5 good looking themes. i know you would say you have winmo and customise your phone in a way you want to, but not every user has the necessary design skills.
as it has already been said, winmo is a dying platform, android in a hardware like hd2 (4.3 inches screen) is the future
What is all this winmo is dead and abandoned stuff?
There is as much or more activity on this forum for WinMo as there was a year ago.
There are many more websites and forums devoted to WinMo and WinMo apps than there was a year ago.
There are two new WinMo marketplace sites under active development.
Microsoft just released Office Mobile 2010 and gave it to their 6.5 customers. Is that abandonment? Phones are still being sold with WinMo on them new.
There are not as many WinMo apps, but does there need to be? When did quantity, not quality, become the better parameter?
All you have to do is mention a need for an app on these forums and if it seems worthwhile a team jumps on it and develops it.
With WinMo there are almost as many themes as phones. It is so customizable that everyone can have their own amazing theme.
What did the man say? "The reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!"

New Project Thread
Why Save Windows Mobile?
Code:
[I]ok so the reason i amposting this thread is because we all know that windows mobile is dying due to: windows phone 7, android os, web os, and iphone os. i say that is total bs. not just because i am a die hard WM fan but because we are still creating more possibilities for our current WM devices. MAny of us have WVGA devices: topaz, rhodium, leo. and there are VGA, HVGA, and QVGA users out there too. and alot of us either cant change to newer phones because of the plan we are on (im on sprint SERO), no money, or we just want to keep the phones we have. i fall under all the above.
More and more worderful mods are arrising for HTC Sense, like CHT, new tabs, and max manila. we have fully customizable themes for nearly everything. will we see this kind of user capability on WP7? not sure as of yet.
So here is my proposition. We can let windows mobile die like the outside world wants, or we can keep on pushing until it is illegal to do so. [/I]
im just combining all the ideas that i know many of you want to see happen:
In my opinion. the WM UI is so barebone and versatile, all the resources we have now can make this last alot longer. just put the pieces to the puzzle together. If any of you developers out there are interested. please let me know so i can update the post.
TEAM WM
I will try to post more info as i create it or find it
TO BE CONTINUED......
+1 to this,
I'd like to see some development on Windows Mobile. I know programming is kinda hard for this OS, but still, within talented hands still you can make wonders.
Devs are abandoning WM, because it's easier to do so.
Also don't force into new hardware, as most people cannot afford or change phone every 1-3 months. Also I like my HTC HD2 as it is.
IMHO Windows 7 phone OS is plain bloatware.....
Here are some updates
http://sacdev.codeplex.com/releases/view/59079
Good idea.
Personally I have tried Android on my HD2 and come back to WM 6.5.2 as WM still has convinience of functionalities relevant to corporate/business environment.
Yeah im trying to get more people to hop on while there is still stuff going around for WM.
ok guys i got an invitation to this "WM Group" and i fully support it. Yes i am one of those people that believe, that winmo can do all the things that other platforms can do.
Tell me what android can do better than winmo for example. All that it has (and winmo cannot have) is animations. You wanna talk to me about the marketplace? Yes sure, it is a nice free library that you can find almost anything fast, but still this can work on winmo too, the only problem is that a lot of apps are paid in winmo (and they should be, developers need support, they don't work for fun)
WP7 is a useless thing. Microsoft had something with 1000 potentials, and they gave us something with 100. All it can do is play xbox games. The guys didn't even include silverlight or flash or countries support (good luck with that). Don't tell me that it will come with the next update and blah blah blah. They had like 5-6 years at least in order to complete this "operating system", and the final result was a black themed iphone with boxes.
I was testing WP7 on my HD2 earlier, and i was thinking that at least 60% of the things i was seeing there, can be transfered to winmo.
Anyway, it is true that a lot of developers have moved over to android or wp7 or iphone. I don't think that there is a chance of bringing them back, but i do believe that a new developer team can take place, and fill in the "gaps". But these people need motivation, and most of the time, this means donations. People go where money go.
I am doing my part with RapidRead , when i saw that TapaTalk was not going to happen on winmo, i was pissed, so i decided to do it on my own.
This will be hard for me to write, as I really like WM too, but here we go:
WM is based on 5 or maybe even older kernel, optimized for devices with crappy or no GPU acceleration, rendering all on CPU. Everything is done on CPU. And as much as it is optimized, there is not enough CPU power for the rest of the system. If the system would incorporate newer drivers (as WP7 does from MS) and render all IE, UI, ... on GPU, half of the job would be done.
Now move to the other part - app programming.
WM is featuring a lot of similar code to desktop Windows, even more in .NET environment. But just take a look how much it also misses! It lacks any D3D/OpenGLES development! Well there is some D3D in .NET, but it is really stripped down. No universal OpenGLES and so on, and so on, and so on.
WP7 brought us (developers) awesome Silverlight with XNA support for gaming (DX9? I've seen some DX11 libs in system btw), enabling people to write one core for game and run it on all PC, phone and xbox and just always enahance the control to mouse and keyboard, touchscreen or Xbox controller.
Also not forget about lazy programmers for WM that lack any optimizations, or any suspending when not used - it is normal on winmo to have running app on background eating your battery and half of your CPU.
Should I continue?
yeap, 90% of what you said, is that MS gave you a platform (WP7) to play games. go buy a psp instead of a pda
It isn't all about games. WM is filled with glitches that MS isn't going ever to fix. Like taskbar often going blank (not repainting). These glitches force you to reboot the phone - and how can you use that, when half of the time you have to reboot it each time you do something?
taskbar going blank on winmo?
like never EVER happened. not even once. i didn't even know about that.
my WinMo is rock solid, i guess you need to change roms or apps
It happened me on all ROMs on all devices I had (Kaiser, TP2, HD2). My own ROMs, stock ROMs, other's cooked ROMs .
Do not mention Opera 10 getting stuck in background (and not to be able to re-launch it without reboot, since you can't have two modules or files in memory with the same name). Let's face it, WM is old and new OSes provide way better options and opportunities.
On the other hand, WM is PC with phone. Android is phone with PC. WP7 is cool phone. iOS is cool phone.
Ok we are not here to argue although i understand where youre coming from. i do have an itouch because i like games on the iphone but as far as the overall picture WM has proved to be a working medium between a computer and a phone which most of us really need and use throughout the day. Lets face it. When a new app has its 15 minutes of fame and your friends all bragg about it. maybe you will miss out on that. but is it really worth spending $100s for something new when there is no need to?
we dont need to live on our phones it just needs to be with us. and i think the philosophy is opposite for Apple especially. Viva la iphone killer!!!!
So I got like half hour ago totally mad WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT WP7 CAN'T SYNC ANYHOW NORMAL XLS OR DOC without sending it over internet (email, download it from web). Then I got * on not supporting BT keyboards. Then I got even more * FOR NOT SUPPORTING TETHERING.
Then I got * on Android for another ton of stuff.
And now I am back on WinMo, ready to build perfect OS for phone. On WinMo, everything works. Although there are parts that * me too - sometimes getting stuck, whole VM engine, rendering of graphics, nearly zero games that are worth playing (okay, FPSeCE is good).
WP7 is baby, very young, not capable of doing stuff that I am used to do. And WANT to do.
Android has very bad (at least from what I expected from it) Bluetooth capabilities. Even iPhone owns Android with BT support from what I want.
I am going to need a lot of developers, source code to WM and WP7. Who can help (mostly with the 2nd and 3rd part), PM me. The 1st one after I get the 2nd and 3rd one, thanks .
Although taking iOS source and modifying it would do the same job haha . That's another option LOL.
Sorry, I had to get it out
The thing that really bugs me about the whole growth in smartphone popularity is that when you here about a new app or feature that one of the two leading os's just got or can do... and i can almost garuntee that windows mobile can do it or already had done it...
i see my friends loving their speech to text on their android devices and i tell my phone everything to do through my bluetooth headset.....
wm was way ahead of their time ...
i too have had the taskbar malfunction one too many time but as i look around for a device that i would like to get like an android phone or wp7
i can't help but come to the conclusion that the best viable option is to get an htc hd2...
this way i can try android and wp7 or go back to what i know and love...
people laugh when they hear you have a windows mobile phone... only cause they are told about them from other people like they are the ancestors of the smartphone ... which they are...
but i am only 19 ... 20 in two weeks... and i have decided to hold off getting anything else besides wm until there are non left in the world...

I agree. I too have come back to Winmo 6.5.2 and satisfied for everything being fully functional...
I'm glad people are stepping up to the plate I haven't developed anything for WM in a long time, since I felt many people had stopped caring about it. Looks like I was wrong. The rendering engine is a real challenge on WinMo, but with almost full access to the entire system, development is so much easier than on WP7.
Long live winmo
I agree with you guys whole heartedly. I received a Windows Phone 7 phone from Microsoft for free for testing but it runs on T-Mobile. I onlyhave it for 2 months and Verizon is not coming out with a WP7 phone for god knows how long silo I will be back to my WM phone. I have and always be a fan and have been keeping up with the projects and software as much as I can. I efgen had a hand in a few projects. Check my signature for my software thread and I will continue to support this thread without gusto.
I would love to see more developing for Windows Mobile.
Highest on my list would be a fantastic Google Voice client.
Ok i read everything you guys wrote and i totally have to agree with you guys. Winsmob could has the potential of being the best os out there but what did microsoft do? They just abandoned it and try to do a fresh start with a less than 50% complete os. Dont get me wrong i like wp7 (well only cos of the keyboard), i loved winsmob better with all the feathures even if some are not consistent and there are not some many apps out there. Its just that i'm not a developer but if i could i would reprogram winsmob with features i like in other os. I know its not as easy as i make it seem but hey thats just how i feel.
i would also be cool to a have a decent facebook application and a decent youtube application for windows mobile 6.1
I have tried my best to like wm7 but imho its lagging far behind Android and dare I say Apple, although it is faster.
I like the new look with the tiles and the rest of the ststem, but get past that to the functionality of it and it does seem lacking.
I can't use it on my pc as disc storage to transfer files, what were they thinking.
No navigation aid
Even putting your own ringtone on it is a bit of a chore, in this day and age of tech could they not have come up with something more user friendly, ie put mp3 on phone-select said mp3 and then choose "set as ringtone/notification."
If I'm honest I just don't see the point of this phone 7, I really feel they have missed the boat, Google and Apple must be killing themselves laughing.
I know I will probably get flamed for this but its just my opinion and I know I can go back to wm6.5 or Android (which I will), but just wanted to try it, glad I did as I'm due an upgrade soon and was seriously thinking of a windows 7 phone but will stick with Android or maybe try Blackberry
Anyway thanks for listening.

The USB storage is a little disappointing but not as disappointing as Android's failure to play movies without serious editing skills.
The overall experience is far superior to Apple and Android.MI
it's really a stunning OS, Zune and the social sites, is not unlike a high quality magazine...I've used and enjoyed many Android builds (Thank you XDA DEvs), owned every iPhone, a Galaxy Vibrant S too, but my favourite is the HD2 particularly now running Windows Phone7 flawlessly.
oh and Netflix too
I think its important to remember that Microsoft got seriously screwed over on WM. They provided the core OS that was very very open which was great of course, but 3rd party companies an carriers took advantage of that. HTC for example, there initial versions of touch Flo were terrible, there graphics driver support was non existing, carriers then filled the thing with crap an modded it some more then we all blame MS for it being slow and unstable.
I think as much as I like wm for its openness, I believe MS had little choice, back then MS let everyone else make the image of wm an that bckfired. This way might be a bit of a pain just now but I believe as MS gets more in tune with developing it will get better.
Tell me, MS released updates to wm all the time, how many legit updates did your carrier give you?
The carriers had MS by the balls on the WM model of operating and it was Ms that got the flack

I totally agree. I was a WM developer when it was was first introduced. I love WM's open architecture and the POTENTIAL it provided.
Now, I love WP revamped UI/UX and some of the development tooling around it. However, IMO, I think it is too far towards the Apple route in that it tried to lock down too much. I would have loved it if they moved towards Android's paradigm.
I have a couple of friends who refuses to move off WM because they loved the fact that WM is so powerful and you can pretty much do anything to it. We will see what hapens in the next few months. Hopefully MS will release some updates that makes WP more interesting.

Couldn't agree more, maybe thats what I was trying to say but just ended up ramblingon on, it was 01:30 when I wrote it.
I agree to some extent, I am currently dual booting Android and WP7
I really enjoy the UI and fast slick appearance of the WP7, in fact its near on perfect until....you try to use more than one app at once and try to simple drag a file across to your phone.
Microsoft have got to sort out these few point NOW:
Enable the ability to run two or three applications at once, ie try playing Tunein Radio then send a text or do anything other than simply use tunein radio. this is just one example.
The only multi task available is music, this was how iOs started three years ago, I know you are working on it, but this update has to be released NOW...
Cut and paste yes this is hugely desirable, sort out the Marketplace stability and search functions, perhaps add folders all these things would be nice.
BUT the Multitasking issue is HUGE, take a look at Ebay or any other second hand phone sales forum, notice the increase of Windows Phones on there, I feel sorry for people who are restricted to just WP7, MS release a pathetic update that bricks a large percentage of phones and all the update is for is to pave the way for future updates, technology moves so fast, MS need to move fast on these updates, dual Tegra's, 3D phones, are nearly here and MS are floundering about with problematic updates and delays
It was a percentage but I wouldn't go as far as saying a large one, again multitasking brought wm to its knees sometimes, I agree it needs opened up a bit so I'm quite untreated in seeing what the new multitasking model allows. It will get there I'm sure but I think its important to let them build on what they have in a stable Manor, id rather that then them opening it up and some not so good developers release garbage that slows the system. Forinstance does your radio program stop all UI updates if screen is off or on another program... Dunno but just a thought
WP & HD2
HD2 is my first SmartPhone and my first go at customisng with ROMs etc.. Previously I've always had Sony Ericsson mobiles.
WM6.5 is a beast of an OS, true MS (infinitely hackable, proved by the existence of Xda) and made pretty and usable with HTC Sense.
As I use my phone for work as a PDA with 3rd Party CRM software I was concerned about the loss of function I was going to see with WP7. I need multi-tasking and touchscreen Signature capability, but I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade. I had some problems at first with the SD card, but since upgrading that the experience of WP7 has been hugely impressive. It looks good and does what it does very well. I've found it very stable, no awkward freezes or white screens (post SD Card change).
I've not tried the Maps app properly yet, but if it hooks with GPS, shows me a route and follows me as I drive (like Google Maps on WM6.5), I'm happy with that. I don't need or want the annoying turn by turn voice control of some over-paid celebrity or underpaid Google-geek.
I have lost the ability to use it for work, but I don't really like work that much anyway. And I have a spare HD2 to play with.
I've not used and have no plans to use Android or iOS, but from what I've seen of friends i-Phones, I'm not missing much apart from a huge library of catapult games and i-Gun apps (the Nuance Dragon Talk-2-Text(ish) app would be very nice to have though).
Thanks but no thanks, I'll wait til WP7 has been updated and the public finally get behind this awesome OS. An official ROM for HD2 would be lovely, but with the stablity, functionality and speed of the cooked ROMs I'm not too fussed.
Far from laughing, once MS gets this OS into gear and throw even a fraction of i-Apples marketing budget at it, Android & Apple are going to have a huge Windows shaped problem on their hands.
If what you want is an OS that you can tweak the hell out of then 6.5 is for you. If you just want to use your phone for phone calls, e-mails and music etc... then WP7 has got my vote.

A thread about getting iOS ported to HD2.
Sorry if i've gone off topic but......
m$ missed the boat? NO! They are a NEW boat which is growing and gaining speed. Just wait.
..wp7 is a unique os and feels great. It's not perfect yet but that will come in time when the most wanted features will be added.
For me Android is nice..but I like wp7 better! Even with it's shortcomings at this time.
I have had WP7 in the past on my HD2, but came back to Android...
reason, WP7 is trying to following iOS model, which does not work (for me) as MS dont make their own hardware.
Also, am guessing they rushed out the OS release, just to avoid being forgotten,
but in my view they could have waited a bit longer and release a more fully featured OS.
Granted a compnay develops a new OS , its going to have few misses here and there, but MS has previous experience of Mobile OS and that should have been better used.
Having said all that, I dont see MS loosing the Mobile battle, they have huge R&D capability coupled with past experience and ofcourse money.
If I have to stick my neck out , I would say the following can do wonders..
1. MS changes the Metro UI to make it more appealing or provides an option to do so.
2. Makes the OS a bit more open
At any rate, if we can wait for atleast 2 major(not minor like nodo) updates, the OS should be lot more capable.
I do like certain aspects of Win7 but they need to catchup pretty fast.
I was on Android too, but after WP7 was installed on my phone I do not wish to go back. The main reason: SIMPLICITY!
There are other reasons as well, like speed, beauty, ease of typing, etc.
Just yesterday I was helping my newbie friend set up his HTC Desire, and while doing so I was reminded once again why I do not wish to go back to Android. Too many steps in setup, screens slow to load (yeah guys, lets not pretend we don't see 'loading' way too many times when switching between screens, i.e., People, Bookmarks, etc) and a score of other things which turns me off. This is not to say that Android is bad, by no means, it is a great system and some people may prefer it to anything else. A matter of personal choice, no problem, I understand.
But please, please, stop bashing WP7 for this or that. It is a new system and while it may be so it is still much better than both Android and iOS were in their incipient stages. Or are you pretending you have forgotten that?!
MS is a too big of a company to enter this race with a half product, they are here to kill.
Look at what is coming up this year:
Multitasking MS Style
IE9 Browser

Totally agree with you as I said the same in a different vein earlier...
but just wanted to point out that 'loading' screen on HTC Sense based devices you see is a sense thing not stock Android..
I don't think MS tried to follow iPhone OS or similar!Thats why they created a newly simple OS.. Android is trying to mimic iPhone as the OS is pretty similar with it! the reason i gave my HD2 for an official Wp7 device is for the originality of product! I loved my HD2 but when i flashed wp7 the whole senario changed instantly! It's the 2nd time i respect Microsoft for doing such a Big step (the 1st was windows 7 PC).
The Wp7 OS is simple, user friendly and really fast because no apps or sources are running in the Background and that's really cool! The features are really awesome.. i only agree that they didn't include more features such as copy-paste, Home wallpapers and more; but for sure they will come up! Before the official realease i said "what the fcuk Microsoft did to this OS??? I hate it!" But actually when i got it in my hands i said "this is pure awesomeness!!!!!!!!"
WP7 has great potentials and i really love it; and i am glad they forgot Windows 6.5!
I am also glad that they came up with updates in no time! I am rest assured that they will update the OS frequently!
I think MS hit it right on with wp7.... yeah, it's limited right now, but what OS isn't on their 1st release. WP7 is way better than android or iphone was with their 1st versions. And already MS is getting an update ready to include multitasking, which looks awesome the way they're doing it. I think WP7 is going to catch up to android and iphone fast, and possibly pass them up in the next year or 2... we'll just have to wait and see.

Actually if you had read the first line you would have seen that I really wanted to like the system, I am a huge Fan of Microsoft maybe thats why I feel dissapointed with WP7. You call me a tool or troll when you've not even supposedly read the post, I expressed my opinion in what I thought was a polite manner, if a little $ upsets you that much then I feel sorry for you.
This is so typical of most forums, there are always a few who can't make a post without being rude or insulting.
Microsoft can still come on tops. Make Wm6.5 Open Source
I really hope they do make it happen, and I hope the next few updates prove me wrong and produce a top notch phone.
I've had the HTC Rhodium pretty much since the day it came out and at first I loved it but now I am only a microscopic inch away from chucking it in the garbage. The tink that annoys me the most is that its a beautiful device with potential to beautiful things. And it can do some wonderful things, just not without glitches and lags. When I'm at a bar talking to a potential client (or sex partner for the night) and I hit contacts (i'm running windows default bcuz its a quicker loadup time than HTC sense) the list should just pop rite up right? but no I have to wait about 3 minutes for my phone to figure out what I want to do, that enough time for the person I'm talking to to change their mind about giving me their number. and its not just with contacts. I try opening a program in the start menu, the screen freezes for a few minutes then decides to execute the command. I click on a song file in windows explorer, the screen freezes for a few minutes then decides to execute the command. I type in a url in Opera, the screen freezes for a few minutes then decides to execute the command. I've even tried hard resetting the phone count-less times to put this lagging problem to an end. And that only momentarily sovles it, but the lagging eventually comes back. It doesnt have to do with memory bcuz I have a 16microsd card and all my images, music and saved files are on there. So I just assume its the OS on the phone.
Since I am due for an upgrade anyway I am wondering should I go for the Android (HTC EVO Shift) or the WM7 (HTC Arrive). I'm not looking for whats going to be the most popular or fancy or even the most customizable just looking for functionality. and info would be greatly appreciated
I personally have no expirience with WM7 but Windows has always had a problem with lag and their mobile OS. If your not into customizing just want something reliable the Evo Shift is a good phone. Android is better about lag problems with my expirience. Also if for some reason you have lag issues you can always root and get voodoo lag fix and take care of it. Also Microsoft was rushed to release Windows 7 so there still bugs and it needs more time to mature. The Evo Shift is running a pretty quick 800ghz processor and compared to the stock evo is actually faster. So my personal opinion would be android and the Evolution Shift

Have you tried over-clocking you tp2? Def helps..you'll see and feel the difference right away.
android SO is excellet i prefer android defenitly
WP7 is closed source and if you are into modding and customizing your phone, it's not for you. Android is open source and the EVO Shift is an excellent choice. Stick with that HTC brand, Samsung and others have been known to ditch their devices fairly early and give no more updates. HTC does a pretty good job with the Android updates and has the most development going on around it IMO.
I acually bought both; HTC HD7 and Samsung Infuse 4G. WP7 interface is smooth and beautiful. Aesthetically, the interface is more attractive than Android. But, no flash support and it's a little slower than Android. I also had a TP2 and I customized the heck out of it. Android fills that need for me. Also, with the TP2 I became addicted to flashing ROMs. Android fills that need as well. Android is super fast, too. So having experince with both, Android is the better of the two.
I've been looking at both platforms, and I've found the WP7 to have more towards my needs. Sure, the tiles are a bit bland when compared to the Sense UI, but its very smooth.
The WP7 is currently in its infancy (damn microsoft, starting from scratch and ditching 6.5), but they are making efforts to fix that. If you know C# or C++, then XNA on WP7 will be a smooth transition. Although the device is closed source, you can unlock the phone with the SDK.
Android uses an alteration of Java, which I've see as a mess. XDA-Developers has accumulated a large community of Android users and many android phones, so there is a fail safe if you mess up your phone.
My recommendation to you is to go to the stores and try the phones. If its not a live demo (i.e. plastic shell with a sticker on the screen), then ask for a live demo. Play with them, and imagine that phone in your life.
Well... thats kind of a 50/50
WP7 looks plain with that home screen, and it lacks lots of things.
Android is a bit slow when downloading things from the Market without using Wifi (my experience), and u can customize your home screen and layouts.
Hmm, I'd probably say go Android
i would go for tmobile g2x the fastest phone
I know the original post is a dated one, so I'm not sure if the original poster is even reading replies at this time, but..........I'd question why his phone freezes for minutes at a time doing anything...the device is only slow when using stock TF3D, which he stated he isn't, and even then, stock TF3D doesn't freeze for minutes at a time...seriously, does anyone think the manufacturer sent out a device that freezes for minutes at a time? Do any of your phones freeze for minutes at a time? Have you seen other threads for the TP2 that claim their device freezes for minutes at a time without them stating they just needed help because they'd done something to it they didn't know how to reverse?
I have a custom rom on my device now, which is a lot faster than stock, but if I had to go back to stock, I wouldn't want to ditch the phone, because it's a wonderful phone, even stock. It never froze on me for minutes at a time (well, there WAS that whole sms freeze thing before the hotfix was released)...but other than that, it never froze for minutes at a time, even stock....say "I don't like this wm platform" or "I like android more" or "I like wp7 more" or "I have no idea what's going on"...but don't say "The TP2 normally freezes for minutes at a time and it's natural for it to do this, it's how it was released"....
Now...yes, a friend of mine does have the evo shift which of course I have played with, it's a very nice device and I prefer it over the Evo 4G which I also have (my personal phone Tilt2 AT&T, my "business" phone, Evo 4G Sprint)...my business phone, lol...basically I give that number out to customers to call me on, other than that, I do everything from the Tilt2...if I was forced to decide on a device...I'd keep the Tilt2...WP7 will mature in a while....I'm interested in seeing what they and the manufacturers come out with in about a year, until then, my Tilt2 runs awesomely thanks to the Chefs who build custom roms, and it's wayyyyyy better looking thanks to the people here who theme.... I don't have "phone envy", I think if anyone came from a new android device or wp7 device who'd never used a tp2 like mine before they'd have phone envy...
No sim on the HTC Arrive
On my phone, it does freeze up for a few seconds when loading basic programs. Like, when opening the contacts program or start menu, there is a 4-5 second lag (despite the phone immediately vibrating to confirm the action). In the newer phones, they have a 1GHz as required minimum while the TP2 has a 528 MHz processor. If the TP2 had a 1GHz processor, the loading time will take a second or even less.
The phones mentioned, the HTC Arrive, it doesn't have a SIM card. The HTC 7 Pro, which is the non-sprint phone, still doesn't have a SIM. So trying to get the phone while being on AT&T, either complain to HTC or wait for another phone. The LG Quantum (for AT&T) is pretty nice....but there could be better.
Personal, i will go for both of them, maybe one at the time and then switch to another.
Both of them have weak/strength features, so it's up to you guys to pick what is the best for you.
Android for sure. It is the youngest mobile OS and besides it is improving faster than any other OS. It got the potential to become the best OS and is better than WM. Also the android market has a lot of very funny applications available. In addition the interface of Android is excellent and does not lag like WM one. I bought Rhodium one year ago and with my knowledge now if I could I would go back in the time and get android phone. Not that I'm sorry for getting TP2 - it works a lot for me but kinda WM is like a cliche compared to android and I wish I had bought an Android phone more than WM phone.
I think I've said enough good things about Android that would convice you to buy a phone with this OS. If you have the money buy LG Optimus 3D - dual core processor, Android, 3D View and 8 Mpx camera....just awesome ))
Go to android! Install android port FRX07 on yor TP2! Very good work
Awhile back I was thinking the same thing, but as of today I still can do more with my T2 WM6.5 than the Android, iPhone, and WM7. Although I had to do lots of hacks and tweaks to get there. But, for me, this is what I love to do.
The WM7 is going towards the iPhone philosophy. You pay for it, they tell you what you can or cant do. If you like to do lots tweaking this phone is not for you. If you are of the soccer Mom ilk then maybe WM7 is for you.
For me the Android is still too new. I have also heard that of all of the smart phones out there the android gets returned the most.... Not sure why. Though if someone were to take my beloved T2 away I probably would go for the Android.
Android, without question. Some people tend to find Android cumbersome (all of the settings, menus, etc.). If you're one of those people, get a Windows Phone (extremely young, but has nowhere to go but up). I tried it once, and it wasn't enough for me. It was an iPhone, with a different look.

How so? I'm really curious. And I tend to agree with the WP7 = iPhone statement.

But what about privacy?
I realize that all 3 (MS, Apple, Google) are not really doing well in that regard, but Android pretty much requires me to have a Google account so they can log my mails, searches, etc..
I'm not reall very fond of that, that's why this post is still written with the TP2.
After testing WM6.5 and Android, I would say Android for the huge amount of apps, widget, aso that u can use. System is stable and fast too...

People freaking out about digital privacy (in terms of data mining) recently is hilarious. Companies have been data mining you for decades through other means, (store purchases, credit cards, tons of other stuff) but nobody cared about it.
Google uses data anonymously, and things like locational data are not stored for more than a couple days (unlike Apple mapping fiasco). You should not let that be your sole reason for staying with an outdated device and obsolete OS.
One nice thing about having a Google account and an Android phone, is you never have to worry about backing up your phone contacts and email ever again, or migrating that stuff to another phone. You just enter your Google login when you buy a new phone, and its all automagically there.
To the OP's original question: Android all the way. I debated this for some time too. But WP7 is a closed platform. Android is infinitely customizable, and tons of mods and hacks, just like in the old spirit of WM.
