[Q]Elf freezes with official & cooked ROM? - Touch GSM General

Hello!I got a HTC elf for about 2 months and i got some problems with him for about some time it freezes from sudent without doing anything and sometimes the power goes off and doesn`t want to turn on anymore,i do not know what to do with him now. Please help me
PS: The phone is bought second-hand in case it helps but this happens only for about 2 weeks

man HTC touch elf phones are quiet delicate also (from its back side).
i believe you might have fallen it somewhere hence its back side of the phone has become loose so hence it would loosen up the battery...every tym you pressure at its back side I to had a similar enigma, i just tighten the back part and later it worked properly..

Anyone can give me some more details about this kind of problem and solution to this please maybe a tutorial with pictures?

did u drop your phone?? i used to drop my phone alot aswel and so had the problems of turning off time snd again too! probably th battery has loosen abit..try keepin a thin paper/cover over th batt/under the batt cover to make it fit tight! about the freezing problems i didnt have any..might b bcoz ur phone is old(2nd hand) - or having inner circuit problems maybe!

It felt for about 2 times but was with the housing on it and i do not think it had suffered anything but i will try tomorrow to put something on the back cover of the battery to see if it has any results. And about the problem with freezeing i disasambled the mainboard and made it with contact spray so i don`t think it does that because it isn`t make a good contact something or things like this, and the problem is that it does power on very hard after the freezing and sometimes it just goes off from sudent and do not want to power on any more. The phone is SH but when i bought it it didn`t had any of this problems

Hello again!I have tried your ideea with putting something betwean the battery and the back cover but it steel freezes do not know what to do with it anymore!please help me solve this problem!!!(

probably the plastic piece will solve ur problems.

I allready tried this and for a moment i thought the problem was solved but after abot 3h the device was power off but after yesterday (cuz sunday i disasambled the device) i didn`t happened anymore but today the device was low battery and i do not know why cuz yesterday morning i took him from the charge..very bizzar isn`t it?:-?

Mine started to have the same problem, I have it for two years and no problems until now. I cared about it very well, so no fall-downs or scratches. I updated everything in SW I could but it doesnt solve the problem. I also replaced the battery, no effect. I think it will be electronic issue. Wish someone could help us...

Hi,
I think I had the same problem:
- the phone froze in standby (sometimes after 30min, sometimes after more than 5 hours).
- if standby is disabled it NEVER froze (but i had to charge battery one a day).
flashing was no solution (tried blue elves, onyx and tess).
i shipped it to htc-repair-center three times, but they could not repair my device (altough they tried and shipped it back to me DEFECTIVE).
Now I have a replacement Elfin which works perfectly.

So nobody has a solution for this?

Has anyone found a solution for this cuz i tried the plastic thing but nothing seems to solve the problem i disasambled the elf and put contacts spray wd40 on it and heated but nothing the phone still goes off and freezes i still use the plastic things over the processor but i think that it does this because the processor is overheated and thats why it freez and turn off and do not whant to turn on maybe someone had tested to put a piece of aluminium in stead of the plastic thing to cool the processor?

I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.

screen corrupted / faulty

I got a serious problem with my mda vario here.
sometimes, 7 out of 10 times, when i get a call the screen gets totally corrupted and jumbled like on the picture in the attachment. i can only see black vertical lines on a white screen. in order to make the screen work properly i have to turn the phone off/on (stand-by mode) then.
does anybody know where the problem is?
i have to confess, that the phone slipped out of my hands and fell on the ground 3 times so far.
thanks
well, you say youve dropped it 3 times already? is it possible that something may be loose inside? is there cosmetic damages from dropping?
yes, there are some scratches on it. i don't really think that something is loose or broken, because the screen gets only on icoming calls corrupted.
so i don't think that it is due to a loose contact or something like that...
I have exactly the same problem. I personally think it is unlikely that dropping the phone has caused it as it corrects when you cycle the power button. Any help on this from other forum member would be much appreciated.

Oh dear ... somethings in the air...

My phone is crap like hell... gotta hard reset and reconfig the damn thing. acting up lately...
(ps... AFAIK i barely dropped the phone... maybe 1 or 2 times. nothing more)
I have the same problem
I have read the service manual of wizard and said:
Unusual Vertical / Horizontal lines or partial display
(1) Check the connection of LCM FPC whether is properly connected. (Is a conector between motherboard and LCD)
(2) Try with another LCM. (LCM=LCD Screen)
(3) Try with another Main Board.
(4) Replace LCM if necessary
(5) Replace Main Board if necessary.
(6) Once the defective part has been identified, verify it again with the defective part whether the
symptom could be duplicated
Any sugestion?
Okay..
so far, i have installed Molski 2.26 rom (30meg free version) and upgrade the radio rom form 2.25 to 2.47.
I have not had another occurance of this so far.
Maybe a fluke.
Screen fixes when pressure applied to bottom of the screen
Guys,
I now have to keep my finger pressed hard against the bottom of the lcd unit to get the screen to display to work properly. it is under warranty with Imate but they want me to send it to Abu Dhabi for repair. I'm in Canada and concerned that I may not get it back.
So has anybody else identified this as being a loose connection rather that a real hard fault. Also has anybody fixed their unit by dismantling and reseating the connections.
Finally has anybody used the Imate repair service and was it timely & reliable?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Mick
This is a real hard fault.. had it with my mini s, took it into the shop, it was away 2 weeks... and in the end they gave me a replacement!!
I agree - took it completely apart and cleaned everything ....
And still have the issue.
Serves me right for buying something in Middlesbrough I suppose
It must be a hard fault with the LCD assembly. Will have to see how Dixons handles an overseas repair.
Take care & thx,
Mick
I had the same problem, in the end i took it into my local t-mob shop to have it repaired, they ended up sending me a new one.
Well, I've exactly the same problem since the past two-three weeks, it also occurs only in the morning. I'm living in the Netherlands and this is happening since it's rather cold over here, especially in the morning (3-4 degree Celcius). Since my bedroom window is open during the night, it gets rather cold in my room.
During the rest of the day it is +8 degree Celcius, and the phone works flawless. Maybe this problem has something to do with the Temperature?
Temperature
Bebob - don't thin so as I have had this problem for a number of months and the temp here in the summer is high (30+ degrees C)
It looks to be a bad connection type issue and may be a bad screen cable. It makes sense though that the issue is at the bottom of the screen cos this is where we press the select buttons all of the time.
Pls keep me posted on how you do. mine is going to a local repair shop (on my dime) tomorrow to see if they can fix it.
If not can any of you guys recomend a new unit that could be considered an upgrade to the KJAM ?
Many thanks
Mick
suggestions needed
friends, i have o2 mini s and got the same problem with screen for the last 3 weeks....
can anyone tell me that will the problem aggravate or else will i be able to use my cell properly for few months...
and also what will be the approx cost of repair..
all suggestions will be warmly appreciated...
It's happened to me as well. I have lived with that for one month now. It is happening, when I touch the cursor keys or when touch the lower part of the display. I tried "shaking/hitting" the xda and it looks better, so I assume it is a faulty connection cable.
I have active Cleartype and no more vertical lines for the past 2 days.
I seems to be a problem when background is white and leters are black.

similar problem
i dropped the phone (T-Mobile MDA Vario) and now when i turn it on the screen is fine for 5-30 seconds but then it scrambles, but works again if i smack the bottom of the phone on my hand!
t-mobile staff told me there are sensors to identify if it has been dropped. I'm suspicious that it could even be programmed to go "faulty" once it is dropped as the screen is fine for a limited time so it obviously works somewhat. do you know if this is the case? or what's happened? also is it a simple thing i could do myself? i didn't take out insurance so that's why i haven't just claimed off that as i'm really broke
Any help is appreciated

whiteish screen / over temperature
hi,
I have a problem smilar at qtek 9100. I had upgade to my ppc wm5 to wm6 around 3 week ago and overclocked to 221 mhz with batery status today plug-in . 2 days ago Screen became whiteish (almost no contrast or over gamma) and working temperature is around 30c. I tried to re-flash with many kind roms but noting chaged.
Is there anybody has these kind of experice. If I can not solve. I am planing to buy new LCD ( I am not sure new LCD will solve the problem)
Thanks
Same problem here. Dropped it ONE time and the screen went crazy. Sent it to my t-mob shop and they got it repaired. They said in the report that they changed the "flex". Dunno if this helps.

Screen fading to white ongoing issue- MONEY AHEAD!

Hi all,
I need help, suggestions, anything with an issue I've had for a while. Since the time I started loading WM6 the screen has been randomly fading to white. I have LSVW latest rom 22/4 SE and 1.40.10 radio and 1.40oli although it doesn't matter what rom you load. I tried going back to WM5 and its better but now still fades to white as well.
on advise from oli and legolas I purchased a new battery but still have the same issue.
I have dropped my phone once which resulted in a crack to the right of the DEL/CR keys so could it be a HW issue and if you think so is it one I could open up the phone and fix?
Any and all help appreciated
IN FACT IF SOMEONE CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE I WILL DONATE SOME CASH TO THEM!
test
Im updating to
LVSW 4-23 Full, Radio 1.40.30.00, SPL 2.10.Oli, IPL 1.04
seeing if any difference comes out.
This is not the first time this issue has been reported:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-301003.html
The conclusion is that it's hardware related. It may be as simple as one of the internal ribbon connectors having a less than firm connection. It may be brought on my anything from physical movement or pressure to internal pressure if the device gats warm. However, it is possible that there is a failing component. IMHO, a case of take it for replacement/repair or first check connectors if your brave and not worried about a warranty.

HHmmm interesting thread .. the only issue i have out of that is the fade to white one.
Maybe Hardware .. i got the phone off ebay and now it has a crack in it .. so i dare say it isnt under warranty any more. (even though its a max of 6 months old).
It may also be software. I experienced the WSOD on my JASJAM when playing with the GPS-related DLL's. Once this problem appeared when switching on the camera. The screen would turn white and soft reset would not fix this, only power off/on would sort it out. Seems that the drivers do not reset (some of) the hardware to a known state on boot.
Had EXACTLY the same problem. Hoped it would be a software problem. Hard-reset a few times to no avail. Upgraded to a couple of the WM6 ROMs. No change. I did notice that when it was cool it tended not to happen, but after being on the phone a couple minutes or using the PDA for a while, it would do it AGAIN.
One weird thing I noticed was that if I did a Soft-reset and held down the Left Soft-key, I could "force" it to fade to white on start-up! VERY WEIRD.
I finally bit the bullet, and sent it back to Telstra to get it sorted. Didn't want to void warranty myself.
It has been just over 2 weeks since I sent it off, and They have sent this reply...

So, I guess it IS a hardware problem. But then again, that kind of reply, sounds a bit "dodgy" as it doesn't seem to "technical" does it?
Hope this helps.

Their reply was not very technical - does not surprise me however. The people who repair these devices are usually faced with some component/connection/screen or a m/board that needs replaced. They often fail to take account of something as basic as the case pressing on the screen or other components - particularly when device is warm. So they replace the component they think is faulty and then discover the problem is still there. With this issue in particular I think that there are no faulty components just the case is a fraction of a millimetre too tight for the internal components and hence swapping out parts can have no effect. With this fault I advise people to go for a replacement not a repair if possible.
NB: This issue should not be confused with white screen that may appear after installing particular software or when an application crashes, or when the flashing of a new ROM goes wrong! The hardware issue arises most commonly when the device gets warm or put another way goes white after maybe 10 minutes of use and will continue to go white even after hard reset.
Mike
I have this same problem! =(
My phone screen recently (4-5 days ago) started to go white. I never saw this happen with my own eyes but when i picked up my phone and its sleeping i push the power button to get to an all white screen. I can hear noises when i touch the screen but no image other than white. I can solve this by removing the battery and putting it back in, then my scren works fine....its not verry often just like 1-3 times a day.
I want to try a hard reset but have a question first: My phone is unlocked by the ebay guy i got it from, will a hard reset lock my phone back to Cingular?
Next i want to try upgrading my ROM and Radio and anything else...im looking in the wiki for instructions on how to do this. Any help? What else shouls i upgrade?
Ive only had my Hermes for around 2 months so im new to much of this.
THanks!
I recently purchased a Used Imate Jasjam (Ex Telstra Australia) with this issue.
I pulled the unit apart, and reseated and pressed the Power and LCD Display Data Cables... attempting to ensure they were firmly fastened.
I then upgraded to LVSW's Latest WM6 Release.
I have had the Phone go to White once in that timeframe since. I brought it back by pressing the power button of, then one again.
I don't feel that it's really a "100%" Faulty Part... Because it works fine othertimes. It almost seems as if connections or a Data Cable has an Issue.
I'm intending tonight and using the Phone over the weekend to see if the issue continues to occur.
BAD NEWS!!
Well, got my phone back after a bit over 3 weeks I think? I kept ringing the repair center and emailing. Finally they said it was ready, and was sent back to the shop I bought it from. Rang the shop "no it's not here yet, we will ring you"... now the repair centre to the shop is a 20 min drive... on the 3rd, I rang again at 1pm and "no it's not here yet, we will ring you when it arrives." At this point I was really getting p*ed off. So I went to the shop, and demanded, and guess what was AT the Shop?!?!?!
Anyway, after 1 friggin day, I have lost the Red & Green phone buttons! As of tonight the whole bottom section no longer work, and the screen has gone white again.
The repair report listed 3 things replaced...one was a "bezel" another was a "poly" something. I will get the report a list the replaced bits if anyone likes, but their descriptions are kind of strange if ya ask me.
Anyway, I have to send the phone back for repairs again, which could take another 3 weeks +, which I think is completely PATHETIC OF TELSTRA, especially for the fact they dont give the same phone or even similar to "loan" while I wait for my defective $1300 phone to get "repaired"... (more like 'fiddled with' & "yeah, she'll be right mate"...
GRRRRR!!!!
My girlfriends phone was having the same problem. Try popping out your SD card and putting the phone into/out of sleep and see if that brings back a visible screen. Thats how we determined her situation was a hardware problem and not a problem with the rom.

Yes, sadly this is kind of predictable as I said in an earlier post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1233420&postcount=7
This is why, as I said, get a replacement not a repair if possible. My view is that the individual components are fine but connectors come loose or the heat generated causes pressure to be put on the screen etc So it's a problem with some cases and how the innards in some cases get squeezed. So off course changing the top poly board, connectors, bezel gasket, may by pot luck make a difference but is just as likely to make no difference at all.

Status Report:
After having my phone playing Video's Through the Night (My Way of a "Stress Test" to Generate Heat) I woke up the find the screen to be "almost completely" White.
Usually its gone completely, however in this instance I was able to see the icons through the whitewash.
I put the phone into sleep and back out and the Display is fine again.
Being that these phones are much easier to pull apart and put back together than my old JasJar I might to do some further experimentation.
I think the issue will have something to do with either one of the following
- Heat
- Pressure on the LCD from Parts Around it
- Faulty Ribbon or Power Leads to the LCD
My suggestions
- In the Case of Heat... I'll run the Same Test, with the Phone Directly in front of a small airconditioning unit I have.
- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

We wait to see. Mind you one guy on these boards found he could get half an hour from his device if he put it in the freezer for a while - so I'm not sure that air-con will be strong enough!!!
Mike
Well Results.....
After pulling apart the unit and reconnected, I think I found my cause to simply be excess pressure.
I've removed the "Black Plastic" Micro SD Card from its Blanking Plate.
Since I've done this... not one White Screen Whatsoever.
I don't use an SD Card, so the issue is resolved for me, however it is very interesting.
Could be Pressure or Heat (Small Hole Might Increase Airflow/Allow for Greater Dissapation or something)
Hi folks,
i've also small experience with this "white screen" issue and just wanted to inform you about it.
I got the device from my former boss who did already complain about this "white screen" issue on his O² XDA trion with original ROM. (honestly i did not really believe him due to my experience with couple of other devices so after i got the device i was just wondering - ok back to the facts).
I installed on Friday the Windows Mobile VI Pro - BLACK 2.5 Release and until today it was running (as far as i remember expect one time) nearly perfect w/o white screens. About 45min ago, i flashed the device with BLACK 3.0 Release and got until now about 5-10 times a white screen.
I assume this is not a hardware ONLY issue but indeed very strange.
I'll go back to 2.5 and will look forward if i get again the white screen or it'll be ok.
Cheers so far

You are right to ask the question "is it hardware or software".
1
We know a white screens can arise if folk duff up flashing a new ROM.
2
We know there is a hardware caused white screen that comes and goes often when device gets warm.
3
But there maybe white screens caused by some kinds of crashing software or a buggy ROM etc
Crucially in terms of finding a cure will be distiguishing between these.
2 for most people is easy - take it back and get a replacement.
1 is a matter for the ROM upgrading and fixing boards
3 is a case of trying different ROMs testing 3 party software by selective installation until the problem starts or stops.
In your case I am worried that this is a number 2 device as it did sometimes get the problem before you flashed the ROM and now it's worse. It may only be worse because this particular ROM is generating more heat and consequently more white screens. (see explanations elsewhere).
I suppose if it's an occasional problem you might live with it but otherwise it's replacement at best and repair as a rather dodgy alternative.
Mike
Hey Mike,
well, before flashing the device with a custom ROM, in my opinion it was really difficult to use it.
By flashing it with V 2.5, it was very good usable and with V 3.0 it returned to become more unusable. Nevertheless, i upgraded 10min ago with HARD-SPL-V7 and it's running fine now (i've been wating with downgrading to V 2.5. If it returns to become unstable, i will downgrade to V 2.5 again.
I'll keep you informed.
yes for this particular "white screen" issue it will be useful to hear how things go - thanks
Mike
White screen - in my case definitely a hardware issue
Hi folks,
i was testing and playing around with my Hermes and today i found the problem (very funny because now i can't reproduce it anymore but just read ahead).
Today i was playing around and after pressing by accident on the case of the Hermes, the screen appeared disappeared and changed into white.
Please download the video i recorded from the attached link - you'll see that it was able to reproduce it by tapping on the case:
http://asuka.descipe.de/dphome/test/HTC_Hermes_White_Screen_issue.mp4
Please use VLC or MPC (additional codecs required) to watch the movie.
Honestly i'm not sure if this can be reproduced by anyone but this makes the whole situation much more clear.
Any feedback is welcome.
Cheers

Strange screen problem

Hello xda community ive got a strange problem that i wish you could help me with, sometimes my HTC Wizard 2.x IPL freezes and the screen goes white with like a 'fading effect' for no reason, its most probably hardware problem right?
same white screen of death here.
I am having the same problem. I have not been able to isolate if it is Flash memory problem, battery or some other hardware problem.
I was having some major problem with my early 2006 version of T-mobile MDA. I had upgraded to the official T-mobile upgrade ROM when it was released a couple of years ago.
The phone started flaking out this spring. at one point I had to buy a new battery and charger because I had discharged the internal battery too far. I've also "jump-started" the battery using a bench power supply to apply a constant current to get it up to speed when I had a dead battery at work.
And, when I busted the USB/power connector, one of the re-work techs soldered it back on after I dissambled the unit.
Anyway, I had been having lock-up problems before the latest dead battery issues, and had wanted to try a new ROM. When the unit did a hard reset of its own, I decided I had nothing to lose. It had been resetting itself several times a day.
I installed Slim Diamond, and enjoyed WM6 greatly. Phone worked more or less fine for more than a month, and then it started failing again. I found myself having to remove the battery to recover, and sometimes keeping the battery out for hours seemed to help. It got so bad it wouldn't even boot to a usable phone before giving me the White Screen of Death.
I managed to get it back to bootloader and re-install diamond. Worked fine getting booted, and I made some calls. then locking up in WSOD again. Blasted a Prodigy ROM onto it. Booted and let it sit connected by USB. Everything seemed fine, downloaded e-mail etc. Then, unplugged and left the house. When I tried to call, everything went fine until the point where the call should have stopped ringing and connected. Then, WSOD.
Is there a non-hardware fix for this, some ROM or tweak?
If it is a hardware fix, what is the likely culprit? I can do SMD work if needed.
Thanks
Whazoo
P.S. I should mention that when the WSOD would strike, the phone locks up completely, and if left like that, the battery gets warm.
excactly what happens to me..btw for some reason i think its battery problem, because i got it off ebay and ive seen other similar problems with bad batteries for some reason..hope someone can help us

I was thinking that. I had noticed that it failed most often when trying to make a call, something that is power intensive.
I tried something today. I left the SIM out and just used it as a PDA. It seemed to work longer between reboots. However, it still rebooted while connected to a USB power source. Also, it seemed to not want to charge at times.
Even more interesting is this thread which may be related.

The excessive battery usage seems to fit with what I am getting. I wonder if something has been triggered which causes the system to drain th battery quickly, and lead to low-voltage conditions.
I am having the same problem, sometimes the screen is filled with vertical lines and then fades to white. Only thing that helps is sliding out the keyboard. I think this is due to the faulty flex cable that connects the motherboard and the screen. I have ran some tests when my device was disasembled (but powered on). The screen was working fine, even when i was bending and streching the flex cable, but after asembling it back again, screen glithes continued. I've then reinforced the flex cable connector on the mobo with some rubber pads and electrical tape, and this seems to be almost working (screen jerks only happen 2-4 times a week)As Whazoo pointed out, those screen jerks used to appear more often during power intensive tasks, like receiving a call. Probably this is due to the loose cable connection. Less power than needed is flowing through the circuits and this causes the sreen to "crash".
BTW I have T-Mobile MDA
I have the same issue with my xda mini s and have been contemplating disassembling my phone for a closer look.
It is difficult to take these phones apart ?
Cheers
TT
I've had the same issues. I suspect faulty hardware. Do you guys experience "dancing" pixels short before a WSOD? Those dancing pixels can be overcome when applying sufficient pressure to the bottom of the phone. I personally suspect a worn flatcable between motherboard en LCD unit which fails to make a solid connection between both. I have to mention that I too have jump started a "dead" battery once. WSOD problems started occurring several moths after. I doubt it is linked.
Currently, the phone is stuck in bootloader, being unable to flash a new ROM on to it since it keeps on rebooting itself every few seconds to minutes. I guess it is a total loss. The phone lasted only a few months when the stylus started to drop out and it took only 16 months before the dreaded WSOD started. At first only a couple of times a week while increasing after a few weeks. I recon a motherboard transplant could fix the problem.
Hi,
got the same problem. And i have also "dancing" pixels, the screen seems to "flicker"
oh dear!
I'l have to see if this is a simple flex cable issue. Of course I had just convinced the wife the MDA I have was a hopeless case. I replaced it this week with an 8925 off eBay that I unlocked and flashed to the HTC WWE for Kaiser. BTW, the Kaiser/8925 is a nice upgrade. So, I'll take apart the old phone and see if I can get it working. If so, I'll keep it for a backup.
One question I have is why does it seem to be related to radio usage and battery drain/short life.
mine begun after changed 2.21.0olip
flashing bluring and reboting.
i´m trying find a original rom to see if fix it...
after i upgrade to wm6 the old one (wm5) that was corrupted and missing files its draining the battery in few minutes.......
----------------------------------------- xx ------------------------------- xx --------------------------------------
7 days trying fix it....
My friend was think a batery problem... He buyed a new one and used the original rom on that. The defect not desapear. The screen still blur, flashing, and the batery begin to warm up to fast, one day the batery was near blow... the batery was too fat, like a pig near christmas!
He give me the Wiza200, I find a used batery, thats work for 4 days and begin to warm up, the celular was draining to fast, and the batery warm up to fasssssst tooo. after 2 days its just no signal...
Take of batery, wait 50 minutes on charging. Turning on, reboot, reboot, reboot, reset, then it begin to be normal, after 5 minutes, no signal, and flashing and bluring the screen and itelf reboot and lock on boot screen... Anoyed i used a ATX pc power suply direct on + and - contacts, soldered some capacitors on main board and same problem. Its draining near 500ma... with sim card its work fine. i can use the games for near 20 minutes, no blur screen just reseting. I take voltages near the processor and radio and sim card suply its almost stable... variation of 10mVolts - 50mVolt... I changed the capacitors for new ones... The mobile begin to be more estable, but bluring and rebooting when put the sim card, reseting near 4 - 5 times on windows... and be estable again... but no signal.
I made a full rom backup, radio etc... tryed to change ROM... nothing change, then I tryied change radio... used the hardcpl.... sucefull changed the radio and the the ipl and cpl.... puff its just reseting and reseting again... Just dont reseting when on it was on bot block screen. I lose time searching a original ROM... My friend send me last rom used... all software back to original and the problem.... Damn...
This device was used near a beach for 2 years...
Unescrewed, again open the case... lift the shields.... clean... clean and clean... this device stoped to reboot, but no signal... wi fi useful, windows ok... used it for 2 days with no problem... when its locked up, and i reset it... Damn dont turn on, just on boot screen, and blur and flash screen and reboot itself near 3 seconds...
I lose my mind. I dissasembled all, put all things on water and a little of a soap, washed all device... for 30 minutes.
warm up all device for 40 celcius for 40 minutes and reasembled... Nothing... warm up with 40 celcius for more 30 minutes...
Wow. its turn on again......!!!! And COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOlllll no more drain the batery!!!!!! Excelent signal and im using the fone! 40 minutes and its normal... y go to street, receive some calls and its alive!!!!
Resume: 90% of hardare celular problems is sweat of hands, just need clean.
I hope help someone with it
Same prob a year ago.
I had the same problem a year ago. Sorry to say I never found a solution. I ended up buying another used one from eBay. ROMs won't help I flash my phones a lot looking for the perfect combination. I think you are on the right track with the connector between the display and MB. I think it has to do with condensation and heat. Explains why heavier powered use causes the problem. The more battery drain, the more internal heat. When I finally gave up on mine, It wouldn't boot anymore. Actually it does boot and everything is working. I've even received calls with the screen white. I picked it up a couple months ago, tinkering with it. I put a fresh battery in and it booted up and lasted about 10 min. I was excited for a while thinking time had fixed it. Bummer. Good luck. I hope you find your solution.
i've been experiencing vertical lines & flicker with my tmobile mda especially within the submenus. found out that by lowering the overclock (omapclock) to a value near its default clock speed, the problems disappear. i'm guessing it might be related to overclocking my gadget.

HTC is turning off :(

Hello everyone! I have problem with my phone because sometimes is turning off without any reason, I bought brand new battery and is still same when is switched off and I want to put it back on i must take off battery for couple of minutes, then put battery back and then switch on anybody know whats happened?? And how to fix it!!
It's the most standard problem with htc models touch and elf...
This problem is hardware based! in this condition there are only 2 things you can do:
1.send the device to a htc service center and get the motherboard changed for $300+ if you are out of warranty.
2.Or open the mobile and put a piece of thin plastic in between the omap prosessor chip and the steel piece tha goes over it and then put the second cover on top in order to apply pressure to it because the solder pins that are in between the cpu and the mobo are not connecting properly and lose contact so the phone goes off or freezes then goes off and some times stays off. Make sure that there is enough but not to much pressure applied to it! it worked for mine but i did it because it was out of warranty... its a temporary fix but if you are gentile to it after it will surely work for a few more months...
IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE OR YOUR TOUCH/ELF IS STILL IN WARRANTY DO NOT TRY IT!
I will post a pic that i took when i did mine if anyone is interested... Let me know...
Thanks for reply!
Uff.... first way to fix it is a little bit too expensive! And 2 way to do it seems quite easy, so i try to do it this way Could you add any picture of this and just tell me how to open this phone?
Many thanks!
@Firestarter42
Thanks man!!!!
did what you said, the plastic trik, and the phone is back to life (it was totally dead and didn't charge) you save a life today!!!
I had the same problem untill one day when he didn`t want to turn on and now i do not know what to do with it how to make it work again
Dear Sir,
I have just tried method 2.
My elf didnt have a metal cover on the processor, lol... got it used from someone... or should I say abused? lol
anyway, I hope it works. will update...
here's a link for the demonstrated tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476152
Thanks a lot again.
I haved the same problem.....and i realize after many times that I didn't change my ipl and uspl!!!so my cocked rom frequentely turn off my device!!!now it's all right!!!!!!!
i had the same problm too....
it kept turning off and just a few weeks ago it would never turn on...
i did try that trick of keeping the plastic thingy on the omap processor ... it worked for a few weeks max after tht it happened as above
finally took my phone to htc.. told them it was gift and i dont have the invoice... actually purchased frm ebay for 150$ .....
they checked it was in warranty,.. they replaced the board... hurray... my elfin is alive again.. and in wm6.1
hope htc fixes this crap issue as many face this problem
My HTC elf was freezing, rbooting and so on, i was thinking that it was a windows/flash/third party programs problems ....
BUT I confirm that the method "open the mobile and put a piece of thin plastic in between the omap prosessor chip and the steel piece tha goes over it"
brings my htc elf to life again ... stable !
(i've done it with a metal piece and not plastic.)
Thanks for the advice !!!!
my elf was freezing and turning off so i try this 2. method and it works, and elf is much faster then before in my case...
I've never had this problem before but this week my phone switched itself off (so had to boot up again) a couple of times. I did try a new custom rom but I've also been using a different charger (USB mains adaptor) and a replacement battery (this seems to be a poor replacement battery which seems to make up the battery level.
So I don't know what was causing it. For some reason, removing the SD card and re-inserting it seems to have done the trick for now but I'll keep watching it.
Hi guys
My phone is, usually at night when there is no use, switching the screen off, the earphone green indicator flashes but the phone will not turn on when I press the power button, I have to do a soft reset each time to get it back on again (even though it appears to be on with the flashing green light). I cannot get calls or text and my alarm fails to sound. Have overslept a few times now!. Also, its battery has gone for a ball of ^&*%. Will this trick help? Thanks a lot!
Turn off as in literally 'poof!' or, it will restart?
The only way to get it to restart is to do a soft reset, or remove and replace the battery. The phone's green light will flash but there is no way to the screen to activate or use the phone - make calls, use the alarm, receive etc. The screen stays black, no use trying the power button either...

Thankx your solutions worked out with my HTC Touch and i get replaced omap processor
power problem on Elf (not the usual)
hello guys, i have an Elf T-mobile that someone "lost" i found it, but was bricked...i unbricked following the awesome guides on the forum and installed on it the original italian rom (obviously am not german)
but...here's the problem, when i press the power button (should get it into stand by mode like every pda does) or also when goes on stand by itself, just shuts down !!!
then the pda auto soft resets, until the end...doesn't have the "auto power off problem" like i readed on the forums...however it tried but didn't solve the problem
i think is a problem with the radio, or the IPL or SPL (i tried 1.11.0002 IPL and 1.11.000 SPL...then 2.2x.xxxx IPL and SPL...now i tried 3.14.0002 IPL and 3.14.0000 SPL, also tried different radios...
but the problem remains...
EDIT: Problem solved, changed the little battery in the motherborad, it worked for me
help

I'm presuming you mean for option 2, as 1 is quite obvious
Anyways, I haven't done this, but I am posting my best guess (untried, untested, just a theory).
Open your phone up and completely dissamble as described here. Completely strip it down so you only have your mainboard. Clearly take all the necessary precautions before hand (backup, etc etc.)
When done, you will see there are blank shields above where the chips will be, if you look, you can see little dimples, you can ease these off here. This will get you into where the omap processor is. You can then put the plastic on top, and make sure it is done as described. Should literally be a case of putting it all together and hoping for the best after that. I will have a look at some point (can't promise when) and see if I can take some photos of where this will go etc.
An alternative would be to try and reflow the joints of solder with a heat gun... very dangerous considering how tight the components are packed in, and overkill.

where to get small battery on mother board

my touch shows only white screen

hay from today morning my htc touch shows a white screen and a crack on the bottom corner of the screen.i am sure that it dint fell down.
then what may be the problem?
anyone knows pls tell me...
white screen?
When you turn on your phone, there is no smart mobility.
Crack?
Is that an LCD problem?
i have the same problem with the WHITE SCREEN. bought my ELF 3450 second hand over the net. i am from the Philippines by the way and HTC units are not yet very common here and also the parts/accessories. it worked fine for about 3 months with minor problems such as Auto-Restart/Auto Power On/OFf which was solved using the "plastic on the OMAP chip method" - tnx for the forum for the info by the way and charging problems which was also solved by buying me a aftermarket charger. but recently the problem of AUTO OFF occurred again until it did not work at all. so, i tried to check the Plastic over my chip but to no avail the fone was dead. so, i decided to head to one of our local cellphone repair shops and have my OMAP heated thinking that maybe there are just contact points inside who became loose. when we tried to power on it was good for a few minutes then i noticed the screen went darker and darker and then it was all WHITE. we restarted it but it's just WHITE. tried to send messages and call it but there is no response from the fone. i'm afraid i toast it bad or may be it's just the LCD who got toasted, i am clueless.
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME WITHMY PROBLEM. CAN I GIVE LIFE BACK TO MY ELF? WHAT'S THE CHEAPEST & BEST SOLUTION TO THIS? THANX ...
Generally white screen problem are caused by defects in flex connecting the LCD to the mainboard or the connector itself. Try to disconnect and reconnect the LCD, if doesn't work - replace the LCD.

You warmed the OMAP? Interesting....
This problem sounds really complicated.
And im quite surprised of your 'warming' method.
I've had the exact same problem combined with the fact that my touch was resetting constantly. I was about a minute away from throwing it out of the window when I tried the plastic-piece-on-omap processor-technique described in one of the threads here. It solved the rebooting problem, but not the white screen issue. After a very frustrating couple of days where the screen started to blink and shake and then eventually turned to white alltogether, I lowered my brightness to the second stop from start, and since then I haven't experienced the white screen anymore. I believe it is heatrelated.
Whilst not being a full solution to the problem, at least it renders the phone usable.
Hope this helps anyone.
Heating the device very seldomly solves anything, but causes more problems that you originally started with.
iam using htc touch (p 3450) for nearly 18 months . (bought & using it in india ) my hand set fell two times in water and about 15 times fell on the floor (from shirt pocket) . still its working fine .
and iam using "opera mini " for browsing the internet . for some sites iam using "opera mobile " . when iam on opera mini , continueously for long ours , suddenly it turns white . never come to normal screen unless restarted . but it happens sometimes , may be because of memory or heating up of some H/W .
Hi hotchamo,
my htc touch elf hat a similary issue, and my father just "wringed" it gently until the white screen disappeared. You should try it carefully, since it may help and it won't harm. Just take in in both hands and turn them in the opposite direction, so that the case gets slightly twisted.
If that doesn't help you should open it and check the LCD flat cable connector...
Best regards,
scheutak
Again - flex connector problem. 'Wringing' it gently will eventually result in your LCD cracking, by all means - go for it, it will solve your white screen problem. Permanently.
