First feeler to find out who else will be getting this device. So far really havent seen anyone (besides jmarice) speaking of the Magic in Japan (and he was luck enough to get a Google version). It comes out tomorrow, and heres to hoping that it isn't going to be as crippled as the mytouch (perfected spl - I've been lurking and reading much). But everything else about Japan's cell phone indrustry says it will, for a country so advanced, their cells really seem to be lacking. Not to mention, from what I understand from Docomo, the android flavor coming pre packaged in the phone will only have a Japanese UI - FAIL. Again, heres to hoping for an easily rooted version!
Smart phones are really a new thing in japan, with the Iphone only droping about 2 months ago. Most phones here are clam-shell style and each generaly have their own propirtary OS. I have been using a AU W62CA - Casio G'z One v3 Latest model, Sharp phone - water proof, Can make calls up to 30 meters underwater(not that you could speak), but texting does work. Great phone but locked beyond belief....
Any one have any info - Leads - Anything...?
*UPDATE* Just got the phone, and it is bilingual...Dumb store clerks...
So it shows

Let the learning ensue...
That means you wont be able to flash new SPL on the device until someone finds out how to fix the "perfected" SPL issue.
Hi everyone.
I am living in Japan too and having a softbank X02HT running wm I am really interested in HTC magic but really don't want to switch to DoCoMo. I am wondering if I buy HTC magic from oversea carriers (for example vodafone), will it work with softbank's network? I think it should,'cuz softbank's network basically is vodafone's , before they retreated from japan market and sold their network to softbank.
Thanks in advance.
yehp, picked up the ht-03a too.
Yeah stupid store clerks, they told me it didn't have a full keyboard... *sigh* Anyways, I got the same information regarding the versions. I haven't tried rooting it yet, kind of waiting and seeing....
I got my phone last week too. I'm interested to know what the possibilities are for rooting. Loving the phone anyway though.
the other day I saw a thread in the sofware and devolopment forum somthing like a work in progress, been watching that closely...but as of now.. guess we just have to wait...
I picked up my HT-03A about a week ago. I have since been playing around with it like a little kid and racking up a good bill in the meantime. While I have absolutely no idea as to what you guys are trying to accomplish, I have a small problem that I would be very grateful for if some light could be shed on it.
Since yesterday I have been seeing a folder in my email program titled ".ERROR". I am not sure if that is my fault, mopera U's problem, or possibly a common error across Android. What concerns me about this is if my meddling has caused it and it is also attributing to mopera being very slow at retrieving my IMAP emails.
What service are you tring to IMAP...? With gmail, the stupid built in email program (witch views lables as folders) keeps makeing a new folder/label called trash, no problems, just annoying.
I was actually not referring to Gmail, but the email program that Android comes with. I used it to connect to mopera U through IMAP, but it doesn't work correctly. It will often not inform me of any mails I receive to that address for hours at a time. It also has the problem I mentioned above, the .ERROR problem. I gave up on trying to figure out how to use the system and am using Gmail. That runs much more smoothly, albeit having too many emails coming to me. I figured out that it is not so much the service itself, but the connection the service has with the program. Not sure who is to blame, could be me for all I know. Regardless, it is a nuissance that I would rather not deal with.
hmm... I use the 'email' program in android to check another gmail account (other than the one that is linked to my phone) and hot mail... I havent had any problems, there are setting to tell the program how offen to check for new mail. Are you talking about Docomo's imode email? the one that is inclulded with the mopera account...? I really don't know too much about it as I swiched to docomo just for this phone and never had one of there emails, and now use gmail as the primary phone mail... but one would think that your local docomo shop should be able to shed some light...
I had to cancel my imode email when I purchased this phone in order to use the mopera service, which I was told is the only one I could use with this phone. I was given a mopera U email account, but the man who helped me did not know how to access it and had to call around just to get me instructions off the website on how to set it up. I thought that was weird considering he has the same phone. He told me that Gmail is the better option to use, and now I see why. I tried many many times to set up the mopera U email with the email program, but even setting it to 5 minute intervals on an IMAP setting will not result in it checking. Often I will have to take it off the screen saver mode in order for it to automatically check. I have had instances where it wouldn't inform me of an email for more than two hours after I received it. That to me is unacceptable. imode was always lightning quick with how it operated. I think it might be my phone though, because I notice that the phone will not always switch to my Wifi network even though I am in range. I will often need to take it off the screen saver to have it switch, like I mentioned above. Sometimes it will take Gmail a little bit of time to receive emails as well. I had thought of going in to ask, but I doubt they will know what to do.
I have only had that problem once, I brushed it off as the battery was low, so it may be true... the 'gmail' app has been rather spot on, havent noticed any lag with it yet.
And for wifi, I use an app called wefi, it seems to do really well, it scans for open wifi and tries to connect, but there is a place where you can set up preferred networks.
Also from what I understand, you can use almost any Japanese ISP for the internet service...I don't know where you are but they offered me OCN but I went with what ever..
And I have never met some more poorly trained store employees as at mobile shops in Japan...I never leave less than amazed at what they don't know...
Japanese HT-03A questions
Hi,
I'm looking to buy the HT-03A here in Japan, and I've got a couple of newbie questions.
Are there differences between the Japanese handset and the European/American ones that I'm reading about online?
Would I have full access to the European/American marketplaces?
If I try to flash a "Hero" ROM onto it, will it still work with Docomo's network?
If you know the answer to any of these questions, I'd be very grateful!

#1, As far as I know, Japanese unit is shipped with 2 batteries and 2G Kensington micro SD card, then it is google branded.
#2. At this moment, you can access only free apps.
#3. Yes, it will work perfectly as another customoized WM6 units do. But, it's your own risk. (Actually I had my magic bricked while rooting).
If you want to flash, I suggest you should fully read related threads and documents around here.
Finally, it's All of your own risk!

If anyone has a couple minutes, could you go to your

Wireless networks
And let me know your mopera settings?
Minus your user name and password that.
I am running my ht-03a on haykuro, but it didn't keep the mopera settings.
If you on cyanogen or haykuro, please let me know.

You only have the limited market with un paid apps out of the box - but after root you can use the "Market Enabler" app... and get access to all the apps..
and I have run a Hero rom on the Docomo net work with out any problems (Fat1ly's rom I think).
and the APN settings for Bizhodai are
Name: Mopera U
APN: mpr2.bizho.net
Rest default
Alternitives that work (unsure of the impact on billing, so be wary)
Name: Mopera U Settings
APN: 0120.mopera.ne.jp
Rest Default
AND
Name: Mopera.net
APN: mopera.net
BTW, I am running Cymod and havent had any problems (except i forgot to make a nandroid of the default DOCOMO Rom, incase I ever needed to go back, so if anyone would care to zip one up for me, most appreachated.)

That will work if you have mopera email account.
So, if you did not have, that is meaningless.
I don't have a mopera email and it worked fine for me... but like I said, I don't know if it is billed the same as with the Pakehodai or not... so I gave the warning...

Don't worry about it. Mopera U Settings(0120.mopera.ne.jp) is only for mopera email settings, so you can not access internet via Mopera U Settings.
Accorting to rumor(?), Docomo have delveoped and been running new APN system which checks IMEI every time user access bizhodai APN.
Also, the new one is mpr2.bizho.net. So, if you access internet with a unit which is not registered to Docomo, you will receive a huge amount of bill even though you contract to bizhodai plan and set correct APN.

The company I work for recently (3 months ago) bought 3 ATT 8525's for people who travel. All 3 of the phones have this issue where when they go into their power save mode, and they will not send or receive Email or produce notifications about new email. It appears to me that when the phones go into this power save mode they turn off the wireless card in the phone. I have made every effort to figure this out myself but I finally broke down and called ATT who then transfered me to HTC. HTC told me that this is a bug in the phone and that they do not have a solution for it other than trying Windows Mobile 6. However, since ATT has not released WM6 for the 8525, and I don't feel like bricking a phone, the company decided to go ahead and buy the ATT 8925, hopping that the new phone wouldn't have this problem. Unfortunately it dose.
So getting down to my question. Does anyone know how to get these phones to send and receive Email, through WIFI and not the cell network, when they are in their power save mode?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Oh and BTW, after toying around with the 8925 I do have to say that the new features included in the phone are quite nice, hate the chrome though.
Thanks
Via WiFi? No. You wouldn't like the battery life if it did.
Battery life
I don't really care about that right now. I'm just looking for a solution to the problem i am currently having.
Could be connected to this:

you need to disable the at&t proxie to use wifi to send mail/etc
To have the wifi alwayz on even in standby is not wise, you batter will die fast ......
I have no issues using Active sync with exchange 2007 i get emails even when in power save maybe you should get some exchange accounts

You don't understand the gravity of what he told you. The battery life would literally be 2-3 hours.
Manually pressing the power button and tapping 'check for new messages' is a much better solution than being completely unable to access email for 3/4 of the workday because the battery has died.
Think about it.
Also, on your install CD, you'll find some AT&T software to push email to the phone automatically, waking up the phone using SMS. And, as other people have suggested, these phones were designed with Microsoft Exchange in mind and setting up an Exchange server would also help your problem.
Thank you for the replies.
Dose the "push" feature work with non exchange email servers. The only reason I ask is because we don't have an exchange server.

I took a look at this and it seems to describe the problem i have very well. In regards to the battery life, is there a way to have the WIFI turn on when its time to check mail and then turn off after its finished? I would really like these phones to be using WIFI most of the time even though we have an unlimited data plan, WIFI just seems to be faster.

ringy2 thank you. I'll take a look at that.
You know I have been working off of the thread linked above and I have gotten the phone to the point where it seems to be checking our mail server over GPRS/3G (I have turned the WIFI antenna off). The problem now is that the when it goes to check messages it won't DL any new ones that may be on the server. Any ideas?
Do you not have unlimited data with at&t? If you do then there is absolutely no reason not to leave wifi off and just use that for email. As for checking emails and not getting anything new. You need to adjust the settings for your account.
surrept, Yes we have an unlimited data plan and at this point i have given up on getting the phone to check via WIFI. As for the settings, what are you refering to? I have the account setup and i have configured it exactly how it is supposed to be. i have it DLing full copies of messages w/ no attachments, and it is set to check mail every 5 min (will change this back to 15 once i have finished testing).
Um, BTW - AT&T did release WM6 for the 8525... VERY much worth it. However, I'm still going for a 8925 for the doubled RAM/ROM & GPS...
I highly doubt that. Again i have looked in every deep dark place that the internet has and haven't found any WM6 ROM that I can DL from ATT site. you are probably referring to the "official" ATT ROM that i have seen floating around. Im not going to put that on these phones because, one I work for a descent size company and I don't want to be breaking any law and such on there behalf. Two I don't feel like bricking any of these phones. I want the warranty to be valid on them. If it was my personal phone i might try it. but since these are the companies phones it ain't gonna happen.
I recently unlocked my G1 to work with the ICE Network here in Costa Rica.
I was actually stuck for like 3 hours thinking about flashing and trying differen methods for the activation because for some reason it wouldn't catch the 2G Data Services (After I Followed alot of APN Settings etc)
When I was about to give up , I saw what seemed like a new icon (which ended up being that it was receiving data)
But I also noticed the R in the signal strenght icon, which I managed to figure out was Roaming.
This has not gone off since I got the phone, I got Donut 1.6 , I got the phone yesterday, It works perfectly, It receives calls, Dials, Msgs fine, everything like my old S.E phone, the internet is even a tad faster, but I'm kinda worried about the Roaming sign being there.
I'm not really worried for any International SMS like it was reported, because the crappy service here doesn't even have that, so It won't happen, and I don't even think Roaming exists here.
Any help to that?

Thats the only thing I saw. Saw a couple other places that had the same info. If that don't work then maybe someone else can help you thru.
This isn't an APN problem, it is a SIM problem.
Your provider has one set of numbers on your card, and another set of numbers that actually identify the network, and they don't match. Technically, from the phone's point of view, you *are* roaming, even if it is the same provider. From the provider's point of view, you *aren't* roaming.
Up until cupcake, we had that same problem here in Canada when using the "Fido" network (which is owned and operated by "Rogers"). The network identified itself as "Rogers", the SIM cards identify themselves as "Fido", the phone think's its roaming.
So; you don't need to worry about roaming charges when you are actually connected to the correct network.
BUT; You don't have an easy to read display to tell you when you are *really* roaming, nor can you make configurations that are based on whether you are or are not roaming.
Edit: You might be inclined to report it as a bug against AOSP. Even though it technically isn't a bug, the workaround for it needs to be input and that needs to originate as a bug report. http://source.android.com/report-bugs

Thank You very much.
I actually wasn't really worrying a whole lot, because Roaming doesn't exist here in Costa Rica. ( We are expected to barely get 3G this year, and there is a wait list for that for about 200,000 people ).. If your signal goes out, thats it, you got no signal .
thanks for the quick reply, another thing I wanted to ask. I've had the phone since like Sunday, and When I got it it was Version 1.01, So I got 1.5 Cup Cake, and eventually 1.6 Donut without even trying the phone at any point, I'm getting alot of force close msgs, for something regarding android action or something like that, I don't recall the exact msg, but I keep getting it , when going to the home from a application (any) or doing something rly fast, it blacks out, resets the desktop and shows up again, I read somewhere you had to do a factory reset (which bugs me because for some reason mY internet wasn't working until like 5 hours after I unlocked the phone).. Thanks

Yeah, a factory reset might help. Especially when you've done that many updates over a short period of time.
Write down your APN settings on a piece of paper and do the factory reset. It will STILL have 1.6, it will just clear the user data, which after just one day, won't be much anyways. Better to get it cleaned up now rather than wait until you have a big pile of configurations you don't want to lose.
Thanks, Did that, now my G1 Is much faster and won't crash.. Awesome
Has anyone been able to get MMS working on the T-Mobile HD2 using AT&T's network?
I downloaded and installed the network wizard cab from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=250891&d=1259353814
Still cannot get MMS to work. I also made sure the proxy was enabled. All settings appear to be correct, is this AT&T pouting because they didn't get this device?
so your tmoUS HD2 is unlocked?
Yes, it works...
I have a T9193 operating on ATT in the US. MMS works great (you can send photos, videos and others) without a hitch.
All I did was install a ROM from the many ones available here (I'm no expert; I used one of Artemis' ROMs). Works great.

I and many other AT&T users have been using this phone since its European release and have had MMS working without a hitch. For $10 a month data plan and edge speeds ~500 +, I don't really see AT&T making a fuss whether it has this phone or not.
Yeah, I got mine unlocked over the weekend at htc-unlocker.org... 30 bucks but it was worth it....
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get my MMS working... Text is working, Data is working, but no MMS.... Any ideas??
hey guys i figured out how to get mms on tmous hd2.

2.the install http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=269964&d=1263970936 then your mms will me enabled
Yes!
I had previously set up my Edge network and it took me awhile to find the MMS settings.
From the Home page go to...
Messages/All Messages/Menu/Settings/Options/Menu/MMS Server/New
Server Name: Cingular MMS
Gateway: 66.209.11.32 (This is wireless.cingular.com)
Port number: 80
Server address: http://mmsc.cingular.com
Connect via: MEdia Net
Sending size limitation: 300k
WAP Version: WAP 2.0
Then use menu and set it as default.
Go get your messages!!!
Hows the speed on edge? I am thinking about buying Tmobile HD2 and use it on AT&T.
Thank god I found this, hopefully
Well, I have been at this since 1pm on 3/30 and it is now 3am on 3/31. Just as I was about to call it a night I found this and thought it might be where I need to be at. I copied Paradigm_Shift's settings which is something i had been looking for all night, since the HD2 input is different from pretty much everything else on att forums, etc. So i have Paradigm's MMS settings. My next question for your Paradigm is what is your MediaNet set to?
Quick backround, i got my HD2 about 2 days before with the wal mart glitch, called tmobile for a free unlock (even though it wasnt out and i wasnt a customer ever, no idea how that worked). Got my unlock code the day the phone was released. And just today (yesterday now) realized i couldnt do MMS. I have unlimited texts with AT&T which include MMS so i know thats not the problem. I just know it has to be my MediaNet settings. So if yours is working, Paradigm, would you mind posting and I can compare? Ive honestly exhausted wwhat I thought was every possible way, so im hoping when I see yours or someone that has MMS working, i will find my error and be on my way with the best/sexiest smartphone eva! Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Like i said, ive been at this for essentially a day and had to post. The closest thing i ever found was this which contained a cab file that created media net profile but apparently doesnt work (obviously):
..... okay nevermind, i guess n00bs cant post links so ill just say it was on a site called fuzemobility and the author was Doug Smith, his latest article.
Thanks again. Ill be checking this tomorrow after work........ which is in 4 hours. FML. This phone has already consumed me.
Oh yes, quick side note- theres no way for AT&T to tell what phone we have and force a data plan onto us (for those of us that dont) since this is technically a tmo phone, right? *Fingers crossed*

Wow, really glad to have helped.
Here is what I used...

The path there is lightly different.
Home Page/Settings/Wireless Controls/Data connection/Advanced/Select Networks
And I only used the MEdia Net settings.
He also has an additional connection "AT&T ISP:"
which is used for tethering. (I currently do not know if we are going to need this b/c of the possible wifi router ability).
I found this additional support information from AT&T. It gives you a solid foundation.

Thanks a lot for the response Paradigm. Honestly, this post started with "Looks like the search continues." But no less than 10 seconds ago, i got the HTC jingle that my message had downloaded!!!!! Oh my god! Honestly, the only thing i noticed that I changed were PORT numbers for proxy. Just because I know how stressful this was for me, I am going to post pictures of each page of the MediaNet setup when I get off work to hopefully help someone else.
Again, thanks Paradigm a thousand times. Its funny because I do remember getting that site from google earlier in the night, but I was so sure the medianet settings were already set correctly from a cab file i downloaded. So happy to see I now get my MMS
Of course, this amazing news is somewhat dampended by the following text I just received from AT&T -
"Did you know a data plan is required for your SMartphone?"

*Sigh* So I guess my hopes and dreams of staying on my wifi undetected are thwarted once again by AT&T. I just dont get it though, its not an AT&T phone so how did they figure it out? I even posted/asked multiple forums (albeit all but xda, of course ) if buying the HD2 and unlocking it to AT&T if AT&T would be able to figure it out and incur data charges/plans. If you google that phrase Im sure it is my question your reading, lol. And essentially every answer was no. I dont know, maybe ill have to resort to this cooked ROM stuff? Not sure if that will help or not. Im gonna call the 611 number and try and explain that I popped my SIM card in someone elses phone for a day to test it out. Hopefully it will atleast buy me some time to figure out a way around it.
I have MoDaCo's NoData .cab program installed so I know the only data being sent was for MediaNet (for MMS).
But again, Paradigm, thanks for atleast getting me to receive MMS. I now understand why XDA rules. If anyone has any advice/tips/etc on my now current dilemma, go ahead and post it and Ill give it a shot.
Look to seeing those pics posted sometime after i get off work around 5ish (arizona/west coast time).
Happy I decided to join the community.

Hmm, I wonder if AT&T and T-Mobile are sharing IMEI numbers for certain devices.
Exactly
Ya, thats the only thing I can think of. I know I messed with alot of internet settings in order to get MediaNet working but at worst I would think AT&T would think "Hey he's just accidentally hitting browse or something"
I just dont see how its possible. Im trying to log in online to see if my phone shows up as a smartphone or still my ancient SE W510i.
hey i posted it on post 6
Current Phone
So I just checked online and it says my current phone is:
RIM
7290
but still shows a picture of my W510i.
So obviously the HD2 wouldnt be in their system and this is possibly their default unit when it doesnt recognize/have the phone in their system

IN response to: eastside770 hey i posted it on post 6
I downloaded both of the files and installed them in that order. Then I couldnt find anything to do with them on my phone? I went to file explorer and all i can click on is a voicemail icon and an MMS icon that does nothing. Does this require a ROM mod or anything? I apologize if its obvious. Like i said, this is my first smartphone But ya, I installed both of them on my storage card, good to go. Soft reset. Nothing new though: Where am I supposed to see these apps at or see the results/edit them?
Thanks,
Ryan
Also, is this in response to getting MediaNet set up or so AT&T doesnt know Im on a another phone (I dont know, maybe this messaging client hides stuff from AT&T somehow )
They sent you a lovely text about implementing a data plan on your phone because you're using MMS! MMS requires network data (not your wifi) so when someone sends you an MMS or you send them an MMS, it goes through the MMS proxy server that you set up...and VOILA...AT&T knows that you're transmitting data when you don't have a data plan.
So to recap in case you're still wondering why you're getting slap with a data plan:
SMS - no data plan required
MMS - data plan required
If you can't live with MMS, call them up and said it was a mistake and that now you're using an old phone (that's not a smartphone) and just ask them to put you on the regular medianet ($15) plan rather than the PDA/Smartphone ($30) plan that they're putting you on. You save $15 a month and get text as much MMS your heart desire.
I Understand
lude219 -
I understand that. Dont worry Ive asked this before. MMS is included with Unlimited SMS for my plan on AT&T, as is IM as long as it is one of the programs pre-installed on the phone, so it doesnt require a data plan. I have triple checked this. Trust me, ive been going on MMS with no charges on my W510i for the last 3 years, and just recently called about 2 weeks ago to confirm MMS doesnt charge in preparation for the move to HD2. Im going to call and ask. But thanks for the MediaNet tip, kind of like the Tzones hidden plan with Tmobile. Ill give it my best.
Thanks for trying tho lude219! All help is appreciated
I posted a few weeks ago about if or not the EVO 4G would work in China since CDMA has migrated over to UIM cards since 2002 and as well all know the EVO does not have a UIM card.
First of all the company that will provide service is China Telecom, unfortunately they do not offer the service, they dont even acknowledge it even being possible and most workers that you talk to have no idea what your talking about.
I brought this phone back from the USA on August 2nd and started my quest to figure out how to activate it. I must say it took a long time to find someone who would even try to ask around to see if the phone could be activated, even being at the infamous black cellphone market in Shanghai(Near the Tian Mu Lu Train station). I was rejected many times even after they spent an hour or so asking around for me. I gave up that day but finally found someone on the internet selling the HTC EVO 4G with a valid Chinese ESN to link to a phone number. (Tian Mu Lu 188 Floor 6 #54)
Now the phone number you have to get yourself under contract from China Telecom, now for this you need a local ID or to be a landowner and avid Chinese speaker like me. This requires a 128K CDMA number 133/153/189 although China Telecom told me that only 189 exists at this time. The contracts are unbinding or atleast they where for me and I paid 139RMB for 2GB and 200 minutes.
You then take this number to them and they link it to your phone, through their internal China Telecom connection's.
This service all in all costs you about 2 hours of time on average and 400rmb.
Honestly since China Telecom doesnt provide this service or even say they can do it, I think it was a bargain and a miracle that you could backdoor this service.
Anyways if anyone has any problems or issues in Shanghai or in China I can help you just contact me through these forums, email([email protected]) or (+86)18964688482.
I also found people that do this service in Shenzhen but not sure where else.
MC
Next time I'm in China and want to illegally obtain phone service, I know who to go to...
i won't have a use for this anytime soon (unfortunately), but epic win sir. well done!
Well I have noticed some people posting on the web about this issue but figure this is the place to bring them as I have found so much help over the years in so many different forms.
Hope google search leads them here.
The funny thing is, its not illegal as it is done through China Telecom just not offered as a service on any of their websites or walk in phone/internet boutiques or offices. The words my new friend used where "They where not willing to offer the service to the public".
I encountered this same issue with the Chinese kind of VPN service called Guo Ji Jing Ping Wang, which is basically a rerouting of internet traffic through less congested nodes so that you dont have packet loss and have better bandwidth with your area of choice(for example 160-200 pings for the west coast US with 0 packetloss and 240-260 for East Coast also with 0 packetloss). This existed about 5-6 years ago but was not offered to the public till 2008 or so. If I had not walked in and talked to the manager of the office and forced them to offer me something so I could receive large emails properly or game or stream videos etc.
Guess its kinda like the Great Firewall of China which is basically wide but not high especially using modern technology or even not so modern technology like a ladder(lol), since you can easily navigate around it with a proxy or vpn and no one cares here.
Anyways if anyone needs help in China for anything I can help. (15 year veteran)

I was also looking at this company and thinking of doing business with them until I found your posting and I did some research and they go under the company name Newtang (Shanghai) Trading Company. Have you ever received your shipment?
no, nothing yet.
I paid on July 30 and it's well Aug 19.
In fact, one of the products I was inquiring about is Korean made and the manufacturer told me it's not going to be on the market at earliest late Holiday season and this company is claiming to sell it already (and I fell for it). DOH!
I will def holler if I ever do get this. I have the crew digging around more though - here in the US and China.
SOMETHING apparently did ship but I know for a fact it has not left China according to the shoddy shipping method. I mean it could be a brick for all I know or just a shipping label. I do not put anything past the whole lot of em over there now. I just do not see any possible way China can be a true economic power with rampant knock offs and fraud.
(sorry for hijacking your thread btw)
I mean maybe in some ridiculous way they did send something but it's not the shipping method I agreed to nor paid for and I refuse to take a fall for this so I'm trying to be pro-active.
Now of course if I do get what I ordered and it really did just LAG I will eat my words give them nothing but praise and for being nothing more than lame in admin as far as shipping method. But for now with all the stuff I've read about them and other companies in general - i am more than skeptical
HTC EVO 4G in Guangzhou
Today I had my struggle in China/ Guangzhou to get my newly delivered Htc Evo 4g working. Initially I thought i could get my card from China mobile ported to a 3G number and use it, but in 4+ shops they didnt want to help me or were not able to. They didnt even bother to ask around or something. And its not the language, since my chinese is actually pretty much ok and they understood what i wanted.
Anyways. Many thanks to " Inti " for the tip trying it with China Telecom! The whole procedure took me only 20 minutes. I opened a new 3g card, put it in my phone and it work. Not even a need for them to enter a ESN / Muid or anything to their system. The best! It didnt cost me a penny or yuan!
The basic choices i had were between to schemes. One 49RMB per month and another one with 98RMB/month. Meaning 100/200 free minutes of talking and 250MB/500MB of traffic. The money can be charged by normal charging cards from the street, even be wired to their account or they can take it from yours. You can pay locally in the shop too of course.
If you would want to use your card outside China, which happens to me already when im going to HongKong you would have to put a deposit of 1400RMB one time. Now your 3G will work all over the world until these 1400RMB are used up.
To me its a pretty good deal and i hope it will help someone like i got help many times from this forum.
As a bit of a followup..
I got mine in Tianjin and paid rmb3500 for phone then it cost the 400 for them to register it to the network the number you brought to the phone..
I use a company account and so its not illegal to do..also I get access to my own account via the web and pay the bill..
if you do a search on Taobao you will find its the norm now.. plenty of people doing it..

as to plans.. I am using the Rmb125 per month with 3gig then I pay another rmb100 for another 3 gig.. so basically until I settle down with my usage I beefed it up.. but it is still on approx$40 per month for a whole lot of usage..
I have used it in Shanghai, Tianjin, Shangdong, and last week up in Changchan with good coverage.. plugging it in to the laptop and using it for good fast internet..
So I hope this helps if someone is thinking of getting one..
I also picked up the extended battery and are so far happy with output on it..
its at 46% after 16 hours of being on.. and I have used it for about 4 hours of wireless tonight.. so got to be happy with that..
I'll post back on the brand of battery I ended buying out of Shenzhen..

MMS in China
Dear good people.
Having my evo on china telecom now for a day and so happy. Here just a few hints that i could have used and also one problem still persists with my mobile.
Of the first sms's i sent out i had only a few going through and some ending up with error codes. After a while i found out that the numbers have to be without any non-numeric symbols. for example number with +8613xxxxxxxxx wont work because of the Plus-sign. It has to be 008613xxxxxxxx or without the country code 13xxxxxxxxx. Also numbers with the "-" inside wont work like xxxx-xxxx-xx-xx.
Then i recieved an MMS but couldnt download it. And I also cant send any. That is unfortunately not depending on the number scheme, I tried everything.
Anyone has the same problem out there in China? My phone is using the standard root spring rom 2.2 .
Would be cool if anyone with working MMS could type in ##3282# ,go to "view-mode" and post all the settings you got.
cheers in advance and help needed...
Even if you had the settings from sprint, you'd still need to adjust them to the carrier ib China to make MMS work over there...

mms in china with china telecom
That is why im asking if someone has MMS working in China with Evo and China Telecom? If so if that person could please post the settings.
The settings from Sprint I have myself which obviously dont work unfortunately.
It's not that im using MMS frequently but it kind of annoys me that it doesnt work up to now. All the rest is working fine with my evo and I love to use it.
The standard settings for GSM/CDMA from China telecom are the following, also confirmed by the hotline, but I actually think they didnt quiet get me when i told them i have a CDMA phone 'only'.
MMS Server URL: mmsc.vnet.mobi
HTTP Server : 10.0.0.200:80
I put in those things in through ##3282# and edit mode. Tried leaving the RTSP Server blank/on zero and other combinations. Couldnt get anything to work. Always get network failure or some other warnings for sending and downloading MMS.
My hope is that someone is out there with Evo + China Telecom + working MMS and if that someone could post the settings?

Sunny,
Mine is set as follows..
MMSC -http://mmsc.vnet.mobi
MMS: proxy : 10.0.0.200
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol: wap 2.0
hope this helps..
Thanks a lot for the help, I appreciate, but where can you set the mms protocol on your evo? I don't have anything like that. Are you using the standard sprint rom like me in version 2.2 ? The settings you posted I found on the net as well but somehow it seems more for gsm phones.
On my evo I have no chance to get to mms settings but typing in ##3282# and then to go to view/edit mode.
sunny,
I am not going to be much help.. as just tested it..
can send a pic via email.. but not via mms.. as it is failing..
as to the settings.. I can see them from within the htc message program..
just go into the settings and you will see them all.. in mine they are greyed out..
so... i dont know if you can change them anyway..
I dont use the phone for mms anyway.. so not too much of a worry for me..
good luck with it..

Have you tried changing the app MMS.apk to the incredible one and adding an APN? You can set many things there.. Hope this helps. (Use VOICE DIALER and say "OPEN APNS" to open the APN list)

@ dgcruzing: Thanks for trying anyway!
@ m4f1050: Thanks as well. That seems to be a step in the right direction. At least i can get now to the APN settings on my evo.
For the moment Im trying different combinations of Mms.apk and APN settings. All dont work so far but will keep trying and keep everyone posted here.
cheers
Good luck and keep us updated!

Yes..keep us posted as if you crack it I will try your system to try to get mine going..

"force Close of com.google.process.gapps"
Had same problems.. started last night when I tried to use my VPN on the phone to sign in to Market.. once signed in.. google accounts asked me to sign in again..(verify account) big mistake.. as it seems that it has registered me twice on the phone somehow..
anyway.. the FC on sync came thick and fast.. was out last night.. so couldn't actually take the time to check what was going on..
today did some research..

so the question is.. if i do a hard reset.. will I lose the actually settings that make it hook in to the phone network?
and I suppose from this we get.. how do I pull all of these settings out of the phone to reuse them again after the reset?
Edit:
As a followup.. and to answer my own questions.. no loss of actual communication on a full install of a new Rom..
after searching the net for the last few days for a fix.. its seems to be a Android bug.. no amount of wipes and resets put me back on track..
So in the end I went for a fresh Rom...

Happy to say.. all fixed and now looking good again..
main points out of this is..
1: as those of us in China that have brought a Evo and had it worked on here to hook in to the CDMA network.. and are rooted.. I can report.. you can upgrade your Rom..
2: upgrading the Rom will allow you to shift a lot of Programs off the Phone to SDcard.. with Apps2SD which most 2.2 Roms have as norm..
3: you get a new look and feel to the phone..
I did as the instructions said and installed the Rom and new Radio's and all working well..
To anyone intending to buy an Omnia7 and unlock it to put on another network...
BEWARE - MMS WILL NOT WORK.
Theres no way to change MMS settings for your new carrier.
I bought one a couple of days ago, and fell into this trap. The phone is going back as a consequence.
MMS and other network settings can usually be configured via SMS. I'd call the new provider first and ask them to send you such a message. The phone should act on the information automatically.
Let me know if this works.

Good suggestion, but we already tried that. They sent two SMS, neither were received. Standard SMS works fine.
I assume Wp7 cannot be configured in this way
You must use an app that can configure those options or try to find them on the test app of the Samsung...
This is because carriers block the auto configuration that WP7 makes use with the card you have inserted.
HTC made an app for that and i think LG can be configurated on the MFG app...

it appears Samsung also made an app, but me, and all the reviewers on the marketplace cannot get it to work. I'm left with a phone which can't support MMS. Very frustrated :-(

Thats really bad! Well i'm sure carriers will eventually get a WP7 configuration later, but can you try to obtain support from Samsung on the non working app?

I will have a go with Samsung, but I`m not holding out much hope. It appears the carrier (Three) is blocking the configuration application from working. The only other thing I can think of is flashing the firmware with a stock samsung version. Anyone know if thats a possibility??
I`ve just been down to the 3 shop, and they won`t accept the phone back, because its been unlocked, funnily enough they didn`t mention this when I bought the phone and told them I`d be using it on O2.... I`ll speak to trading standards as well.
The saga continues.

If you bought it in store and it's not faulty and is fit for purpose then they don't have to do anything as far as I'm aware. If you bought it remotely (online/phone) then you can return it without giving a reason within 14 days.
But since you've unlocked it that returns guarantee won't apply anymore as it's not in the condition it was in when sold. Your only grounds would be a fault or not fit for purpose, and the purpose was to work on the 3 network which I assume it does. And in neither case would they be obliged to give you a refund, just a replacement (which presumably would be locked to 3 again).
If I were you, I'd ask your preferred service provider (the new one) to re-flash it in their service centre, as that'll probably be their version of the firmware with their MMS settings. There will probably be a charge since they didn't supply the phone.
Have you checked if the Samsung Diagnostics tool can help you out?
I have a T-Mobile UK phone unlocked and I'm using it on AT&T in the US. I have the same problem.
Everything else works great on the phone (including 3G) but not MMS.
I think I can help you relock it again.

Yea, tried that, no dice.
We`ve decided to keep the phone, despite MMS not working (its a gift for my wife). Sh`ll email pictures instead, which is annoying but hopefully a fix for this will come out soon.
Data Too?
Apologies if this may seem like a dumb question, but is accessing data (e.g. 3g) on your unlocked phone (on a different sim) also affected or is it just MMS?
Cheers,
Asim
I thinks these issues only happend on locked phones that were unlocked after or even unlocked ones that carriers sell. This is because the carriers are blocking the autoconfig of WP7 for MMS and other stuff. I sure thought that MS would not allow this kind of stuff...
To be fair, who still actually uses MMS?
You just bought a phone that is heavily oriented around data plans.
Emails are free, MMSs are not.
No offence intended here.

With respect, my wife uses MMS, and as its her phone, its not unreasonable for her to be able to use that function, is it????
Yes, she can use email to achieve a similar function, but you will already know that MMS has some distinct advantages over email (auto resizing pictures, compatibility with phones which don`t support receiving email, push delivery to all devices).
For these reasons, your implied assertion that MMS and Email are interchangable, is a long way off the mark.
Oh, and emails are not free - they consume your data allowance. I don`t know the price differential is between MMS charges, but my point is they aint free.
I`m sorry if this comes across as shirty, but implying that this isn`t a problem is not very helpful.
i have the same problem, do you guys have a solution for this...
guys,
i have found the following solution of the internet and i need your advise:
MFG is a hidden admin app on the phone. Here are the steps -- !!! use at your own risk !!!:
1. Go to the phone app
2. Dial ##634# and click Send
3. When prompted for a password type 277634#*#
4. You should now be at "Factory Menu"
5. Choose "Engineer Menu"
6. Choose "Other Setting"
7. Verify that "Set ADC" is set to Enable
8. From the "Other Setting" page, choose "Set network profile"
9. You should now be on the "Set network profile" page and in the bottom half of the window you should see a list of *.xml files. These appear to be the network configuration files.
10. Look at the filenames for the config files and take your best guess at which one to choose for your provider. I'm on AT&T and I fixed the MMS problem by choosing "_PROV_ATT_US_310_410.xml"
After you choose that *.xml profile, your MMS should be working.
what do you think ???????????????
