Hi,
I am thinking of replacing my Magician with TyTn because the WI-FI is a nice feature to have.
How easy is it ? I mean, configuration wise.
Because I travel a lot and stay in a hotel.
Usually, in the hotel, they offer WI-FI access (mostly you must pay for the service).
What kind of WI-FI connection can be made using TyTn ?
Is there any kind of connection profile that we can configure and choose for ?
Maybe this question is stupid, but I dont have experience with PDA and WI-FI access (as you know that I am using HTC Magician!).
Have you ever used your TyTn to connect to a Hotel WI-FI access?
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Configuring Wi-Fi on TyTN is very easy. With default settings you just need to turn on the wifi and wait for the phone to detect wireless networks.
TyTN supports 802.11b and g (10Mbps/54Mbps)
Dunno about the profiles. You can add accesspoints/ad-hocs and choose which to use.
However, if the wireless lan you connect to is open (no encryption) and uses DHCP you only need one access point for that and theres no need to do anything else.
I have used Wi-Fi access in a bar without any problems. Shouldn't be any different when using it in a hotel if the AP signal is strong enough.
At home, TyTN can't be further than 15-20m from my AP without the signal dropping down to zero.
Wifi configuration is the same in all windows mobile 5 devices, you can connect to a network and store the credentials, so next time you connect to the same network you don't have to reenter them.
Regarding Hotel hotspots, these are usually open networks (no encryption) with a captive portal. Support for PocketPC devices is usually ofered by most companies providing this service and should be no problem in that.
I've used PocketPC devices with wifi to connect in KubiWireless, Boingo, The Cloud and T-Mobile hotspots without problems.
Be aware that the wifi range of the TYTN is tight, and WM5 has some issue with wifi:
-No WPA2 support
-No aes cypher algorythm
-Buggy with PEAP auth + certs
What About VPN, we have VPN Service in the University. Is there VPN client for WM5, for the laptops we are using Cisco VPN Client
Jorshua, forget about Wi-Fi in TyTn, its so bad.
Read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276904
I don't have so much problems, in the uni the signal is very good, I am asking about VPN is there client for WM5.
I have a 6800 with Verizon and I attend Penn State at the main campus. We have group authenticated VPN security for our on campus wireless. I downloaded BlueFire mobile VPN because it has group authentication capabilities. I connect to the Penn State wireless and then connect with the VPN client, however I notice that my phone calls the 777 number to access the VPN server for some reason, even though I have wireless. I messed around with connection settings, but got no results. My issue with this is that I don't have any data plan because I don't want to pay for it and the data call eats up my minutes.
Does anyone know how to properly set up the connection settings so that I don't pour money into Verizon's pockets?
Also, I don't think this is possible but I might as well ask... is there any way to use the VPN software included with WM to connect to group authenticated VPN servers?
Any clues?
Have you tried turning off data connection?
Why my PPTP VPN works on WiFi but fail on 3g?
I'm with Rogers. Do they block PPTP VPN on their networks?
I have a X10a rooted on R2BA023.
Any one else got that problem? Any solutions?
Thanks,
MobileTux
I'm not sure what software you're using for VPN as I necer VPNd from a mobile phone.
I guess one of the reasons could be 3G and WIFI use different adapters.
try setting the adapter name manually if the VPN software has that possibility
PS: just an idea.
I use the built in android VPN under Settings, Wireless control, VPN settings, no adapter nothing to configure, I guess it's a bug from the root... I'll try a non rooted firmware some day ...
Check with rogers. I know telus has a vpn plan. More than likely rogers does too.

Rogers uses a proxy for mobile data. By default they block PPTP and force you to pay extra if you want to use VPN. I get around this by using a remote desktop to my home server and then running the VPN connection from there.

You just need to call rogers to open the VPN for you. Free and 1min thing.
They block the vpn by default.
It took them 4 peoples and 58 minutes to offer me the "Public IP Package" at $5 per month that will enable the PPTP VPN over 3g ...
I hate Rogers...
fix you APN first, here I'm with rogers aswell

My APN is configured the right way. They just want us to pay $5 per month to be able to use VPN over 3g network...
Did they lower it to $5?? I still pay $10 bucks/mth for that! Crooks.. did not update automatically when they lowered the price. I have to call I guess...
BTW - same with TELUS - public IP is $5 bucks if you want no NAT on your connection.
PPTP they block. But IPSec they do not block and if your firewall/vpn supports NATed connections you can connect even without the public IP package. However that's if you tether via PC. Android does not have true ipsec vpn client to my knowledge
I use my phone for a WiFi hotspot and sent the signal to a Wireless WiFi router to get internet to my Desk Top computer and my FTA satellite box. I was just wonder, if I turned off my WiFi hotspot and turned it back on would the IP Address change at all or would it be consistently the same??

As I said, I run my computer from my cell phone wifi hotspot and when I turn off my wifi hotspot and turn back on the IP Address seems to stay the same and MOST IMPORTANT, my computer does not show how long my IP Address is Leased for. Is that a good sign, which means that the IP will stay the same and not change every time I turn off the wifi hotspot. I really need a constant IP and was just wondering. I have unlimited data on my cell and trying to save money on the cost of internet, like many of us. Thanks for any help.

Well, if you're on T-Mobile you don't actually have a publicly routable IP address. So you may think that you're getting a consistent IP from your phone, but you really probably aren't to the rest of the internet.
Of course, if you truly *need* a stable IP address (ie for hosting something), then you should at best pay for residential DSL/Cable (which are still dynamicly assigned IP addresses, but have long leases and typically reassign the same IP address to your modem's MAC), or business Cable/DSL which guarantees your IP address will stay the same.
Having expectations of that sort of thing on a mobile network isn't going to be very helpful.
And that said, if you're trying to use T-Mobile as a home internet replacement, you're probably going to start complaining in the "5GB data cap" thread pretty soon. Please don't waste your time. Switch to Sprint if you need unlimited. You'll at least get a publicly routable address, and it may even stay consistent. If you really need to "save" money: sell your phone, transfer your line to someone else, get on prepaid and use the savings to pay for basic DSL.
After searching and trying out several ways to connect my GT to my school's proxy authenticated wifi network I gave up. Then I thought about my ipod touch, registered my wifi mac address with the IT guys and voila it was so easy to configure proxy just my entering user name and password I I can surf.
Now why on earth did android neglect the proxy wifi I have no idea. Furthermore, the adhoc wifi does not also work OTB and will only work if rooted. Why?
I am beginning to regret purchasing android device.....
Hi, what is the specific problem-is it connecting ok to wireless but not authenticating to your web proxy server? apps like asproxy ( http://alsubang.github.com/ASProxy/index.html) should work, but haven't tried it myself....
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I have tried asproxy and it did not work. And yes it connects to the usual hotspots like starbucks. I am also rooted so I am able to connect to adhoc from my nokia phone(joiku hotspot).
I also know some friends who have the 10.1 and the asus transformer and they also cannot connect to the schools proxy. A visit to the IT department confirmed that Android is not supported.
A lot of people in our community are already put off getting an android device because of this.
