Can I delete the android keyboard? - G1 General

since im using HTC_IME can I delete the android keyboard?
also would it be possible to include HTC_IME in JF 1.51 rom?

If you have root, yes you can delete it without adverse effects. Also remember to delete the Dalvik-Cache file
As for including HTC_IME in JF 1.51... yes, you would have to put it in the ROM and resign the ROM. Not sure if it requires special framework files, but I doubt it highly.
Should be straightforward from here.

/system/app thread.. what can we delete?

i am a huge fan of deleting anything not necessary.
what do the apks in /system/app do? i mean specifically?
which can we erase without problems?
ive trimmed most of it, the obvious ones...
These were deemed safe to remove on 1.5, not sure if they all apply for 2.1 ROMs. I would assume so, but read the full thread to verify.

The majority of the stuff that was "okay" to remove in 1.5, applies to 2.1 as well. However, some of the file names for the .apks have changed, that's really the only difference. Otherwise, you'll still have the same Sprint and HTC stuff, which can be deleted.

Getting Started on Theming

Ok i've Rooted the Desire,
and I tried Metamorph, however it needed Busybox, but that won't install, does anyone know a fix for this?
I'm also wanting to be able to get into the file system on the device, how do i do this?
I'm trying to get skinning the UI for my own amusement, but also to release to the community, so where would i find the stock theme on the file system, or where can i download it?
and how do i impliment it?
TIA
Luke.
Metamorph won't work on Desire because there is no write access to /system.
thanks for the heads up the personal who suggested this, never pointed that out.
so is the Desire Semi rooted then?
I think not fully rooted fits better. In custom recovery there is a access to system but not while the desire is running the os itself.
To theme you have to edit the apks in framework-res and so on. Here is a short tutorial for editing the apks without metamorph.

Fresh Rom removed APK's... How to install them?

Clicking on them does not work. Just says it wasn't installed.
How do I reinstall one of the Sprint/HTC apps that was removed but included with Fresh Rom? I want to re-install the HTC Radio so I can tune into the TV's at the gym.
Thanks!

Copy the app to the system/app folder and restart. If you are using root explorer make sure that the permissions applied is RW-R--R-- (user has RW priv)

You can use the installed ES Flie Explorer to install them, you have to enable root permissions in the settings though before you do. I'm not sure about 3.5 but with earlier versions of Fresh certain apps, such as the radio, needed to be installed by pushing them through ADB. If you're not comfortable using ADB then you can use Android Commander and install the apps you want, uninstall the ones you don't, with a nice easy GUI.

DL09 deodexed ROM

Does anyone have a DL09 ROM that has been deodexed but still has all of the bloatware?
Nothing against the developers of the current DL09 ROMS I just want to be able to take out exactly what I want.
I searched and couldn't find anything...

unzip a deodexed rom and get the apk you want.
use search to find a deodexed rom with all apk's
it has been discussed a number of times within the forum
+1
I would like to see this as well, as what I want doesn't seem to play nice with the phone. Ultimately, what I want is a stock, de-binged, de-odexed DL09, that still has the bloatware I can custom remove, and want to replace the Car dock with the google-friendly one (part of de-binged), desk dock and music player with AOSP versions, and the accurate circle battery fix. The de-odexed DL09 rom I found from adrynalyne is debloated, removing some apps I want. And my attempts to add them back, such as Write&Go, fail to install and Root Explorer won't allow me to dropt it into System/Apps. I also like the option to flip to TW Launcher if I choose and have the full selection of Samsung Widgets to play with to shake things up.
Get Samsung Apps from sonofskywalker3's section of ROM Manager.

did you set the system/apps to R/W access? The new versions of Root Explorer default to R/O.
Adrynalyne's DL09 supah clean 0.4 has TW still included, and ADW as well. You should be able to add all the apps you want back to it without issue. I've restored MMS and VVM without issue, and have a theme w/ circle battery installed, running snappy as hell.

Yeah, my root explorer is mounted as r/w, but when i choose to paste the .apk in the system/app folder, does nothing
What I REALLY wish we had was a kitchen for roms. Blackhole is close, but doesn't have all options available. I've seen a port from the Vibrant forums that looks promising. Times like these make me wish I had learned a programming language

[Q] Pre-installed Swype: Can it be replaced?

Hi. I have a stock Galaxy Y with Swype 3.25.91.36057.36060.5607.S5360 pre-installed. I found a version 4.25.92.36347 online and downloaded it. My question is, is it possible to replace the current pre-installed version with the one I downloaded and make it the default system app? My phone is rooted and I have Root App Delete and Link2SD installed so I can pretty much delete system apps (I've already deleted some). If it's possible to do this, how should I go about it? I want to preserve my personal dictionary too, if possible.
Has anybody done this successfully? Is it advisable even? What are the differences between both versions? I want to know so I can decide if I should bother. But for the sake of argument, I want to know how it can be done if I wanted to do it. A step by step tutorial would be great! Unfortunately, a search via Google has turned up nothing so maybe the experts here know better :good:
Thanks and hope to be accommodated kindly!
Use titanium back up to backup swype's data
uninstall swype
install new version
restore data from backup
Not sure if this works.

my routine(after flashing new rom)
restore sms backup using Go sms
Install swiftkey.
Use learn option for custom t9 dictionary.

Go to Root Explorer>Mount RW.After that,go to system>app and replace the stock version with the downloaded version of yours by copy and pasting and set the permissions like this:
Rom:JellyBlast V3
Kernel:Kurotstogi
Theme:Xperia theme with some personal modification.
Download Titanium Backup and delete the app there if it's pre installed in the system. And then you can install normally or push to system/app, then change permissions to rw-r-r

sorry, it didn't work. i copied over the original swype.apk with the downloaded version and set the permissions accordingly (i'm using ES explorer with root permissions). i then restarted the phone. after everything was loaded, swype kept on force closing. good thing i backed up the original so everything is back to normal. still, thanks, it was worth a shot.
i suspect it has something to do with deodexing, maybe? anybody else with an idea or have actually experienced doing this successfully?

Have you renamed the downloaded version of Swype with stock one?
Rom:JellyBlast V3
Kernel:Kurotstogi
Theme:Xperia theme with some personal modification.

yes, i did. i overwrote the file Swype.apk with the downloaded version which I also renamed Swype.apk before I pasted it onto the system/app folder. the original file is 7.1Mb, but the downloaded version is almost 20Mb, which leads me to think that maybe just copying and pasting the other version won't work. I'm thinking maybe I have to install it. But I'm kind of worried now because I don't want my personal dictionary to be erased.
I guess there's no point updating the pre-installed Swype; I suppose there aren't that many changes anyway. Big :good: to those who suggested. Please close the thread.
Thanks.
