[Q] Pre-installed Swype: Can it be replaced? - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and Duos 6102 Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hi. I have a stock Galaxy Y with Swype 3.25.91.36057.36060.5607.S5360 pre-installed. I found a version 4.25.92.36347 online and downloaded it. My question is, is it possible to replace the current pre-installed version with the one I downloaded and make it the default system app? My phone is rooted and I have Root App Delete and Link2SD installed so I can pretty much delete system apps (I've already deleted some). If it's possible to do this, how should I go about it? I want to preserve my personal dictionary too, if possible.
Has anybody done this successfully? Is it advisable even? What are the differences between both versions? I want to know so I can decide if I should bother. But for the sake of argument, I want to know how it can be done if I wanted to do it. A step by step tutorial would be great! Unfortunately, a search via Google has turned up nothing so maybe the experts here know better :good:
Thanks and hope to be accommodated kindly!

Use titanium back up to backup swype's data
uninstall swype
install new version
restore data from backup
Not sure if this works.
--
my routine(after flashing new rom)
restore sms backup using Go sms
Install swiftkey.
Use learn option for custom t9 dictionary.

Go to Root Explorer>Mount RW.After that,go to system>app and replace the stock version with the downloaded version of yours by copy and pasting and set the permissions like this:
Rom:JellyBlast V3
Kernel:Kurotstogi
Theme:Xperia theme with some personal modification.

Download Titanium Backup and delete the app there if it's pre installed in the system. And then you can install normally or push to system/app, then change permissions to rw-r-r

sorry, it didn't work. i copied over the original swype.apk with the downloaded version and set the permissions accordingly (i'm using ES explorer with root permissions). i then restarted the phone. after everything was loaded, swype kept on force closing. good thing i backed up the original so everything is back to normal. still, thanks, it was worth a shot.
i suspect it has something to do with deodexing, maybe? anybody else with an idea or have actually experienced doing this successfully?

Have you renamed the downloaded version of Swype with stock one?
Rom:JellyBlast V3

yes, i did. i overwrote the file Swype.apk with the downloaded version which I also renamed Swype.apk before I pasted it onto the system/app folder. the original file is 7.1Mb, but the downloaded version is almost 20Mb, which leads me to think that maybe just copying and pasting the other version won't work. I'm thinking maybe I have to install it. But I'm kind of worried now because I don't want my personal dictionary to be erased.

I guess there's no point updating the pre-installed Swype; I suppose there aren't that many changes anyway. Big :good: to those who suggested. Please close the thread.
Thanks.

Is it possible to move/install any .apk to /system/app

sorry for the double post
Curious..........when we install .apks do they alreadly know where to install its self. some apks i can completely move to the /system/app/ and others go straight to /data/app where most apks go and cannot be moved without FCing
IS there a way to force all data that i want to system/app/
just wanted to know if this is possible...would be sweet
TIA
As far as I know if you install them manually you can install them wherever you want. System or data.
While rom building I've put non-standard apps into the system/app folder with no problem.
If you put them in the system/app folder you might need to make sure the permissions are set right.

I'm probably out of my league here, but I would guess that you should be able to add in the new keyboard (to the SYSTEM folder), select the new keyboard as your default keyboard (using an SMS app or something), then once it's selected you're good to go. You may be able to even delete the old one at that point without any errors?
However, you mentioned cooking and baking so this is what's over my head. Sorry if this doesn't help you.
Also, like that other dude said... "other" apps like the ones installed from the Market usually go in DATA. I noticed that when some ROMs have Maps installed in SYSTEM and you go to update it, it will install the newer version in DATA. I remember seeing in the logcat during boot that the phone detects both versions and just ignores the older version in the SYSTEM folder.

I have used that exact keyboard on ROMs in the past. I did a straight install from the SD card using a file explorer, Astro to be exact.
Maybe I'm missing what you are trying to accomplish, but that's how I installed it. I'm not up on the cooking and baking, but maybe it's different if you are trying to add it to the ROM prior to flashing?
To remove the standard HTC_IME.apk, I would install the new one first then go into adb shell and remove it that route.
The only way I know how to change permissions is by using the Root Explorer app. If you have that you mount r/w and navigate to the apk you wanna change. Then you long press it and go to permissions. It looks like all the ones in /system/app are "User: Read, Write; Group: Read; Others: Read". Hope this helped!

How do you clean up a stock install? EH06

So I just installed EH06 (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1221253) and it's running well, but it's loaded up with a bunch of stock apps I'd like to get rid of. Is there a easy way to get rid of these apps? (sprint tv, nascar, etc) I basically want to barebones it as much as possible.
Thanks!
I use super manager, free on the market, to remove unwanted stock apps.
I tried deleting the files from \system\app but wasn't able to get rid of them. (using super manager)
Hit menu, goto setup, check root function (I also have silent installer checked) then next time you enter system/app/ it should ask if you want it to be r/w, select that and it should allow you to remove them.
Had root already enabled, had to get into settings and hit the 'switch system r/w' settings and then it was fine. Just browsed to /system/app and got rid of the junk i didn't want to keep. thanks for the help/reply!

Yep, it gets the job done.
edit: oh yea and it has a backup feature so use it.
It's no fun to remove something only to find out that thing you removed is more important than you thought THEN find out that you need to either reinstall or start a pointless thread asking people to post apks for you.. nobody likes that guy. don't be that guy.

Here is another approach if you are willing to reflash download this Rom: Samsung-Epic-EH06-DeOdex-Update then open the zip file using 7-zip, winzip or a similar archive program. Afterward open the system folder and then the app folder, then delete or add the .apk file you want or don't close the archive and save your progress. Afterward flash this Rom Via CWM and then you are done.

Just replace the apk file in the .zip and reflash without wipe. Or just replace the file using adb or a file explorer.

[Q] Problem With Package Installer

I am having a problem with the package installer on my Nexus 7. (Wi-Fi, 32 GB) I think I may have done something to it accidentally while browsing through the system files. I did click to install the installer itself out of curiosity, though, but I don't know if that could have any adverse effects on anything. I cannot install any apps, whether they're from the Play Store or an APK through a file explorer. I get error 406 when I try to download anything from the Play Store. (Except when I tried to update ES File Explorer. That worked fine... Every other app that I've tried will not update/ download.) When I try to install an APK, I get a message like, "There is no program to open this file." I had just rooted my Nexus after having it for nearly a year with the Motochopper root exploit, so the bootloader is still locked. I could still install apps, though, until after my first reboot. Could anybody identify the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you might have removed packageinstaller.apk thats in the system. you can fix it by getting the correct packageinstaller.apk from the interent and move it to the correct /system/app path and apply CORRECT permissions for it

It's still there. I think installing it with itself out of curiosity is what messed it up. It now shows up in the installed apps menu in Settings.

It doesn't seem that I am able to change permissions. I'm just going to back everything up and either flash a stock rom or another good rom. Thank you very much for your help anyways.
Same problem..
What do you mean about "changing permissions"? If you mean to change the file properties to -rw-r-r- then that didn't worked for me .. pls help!

[Q] [ROM][JB] [4.3] Avatar ROM?

If file manager isn't asking for root, I'd try another file manager (like root file manager from the app store). Try force closing the application prior to removing it. Or you could always try Titanium Backup which has a un-install feature for almost all applications:
