I used to be with AT&T with my 8525 and then switch to Sprint which of course doesnt work with Sprint. So i ended up getting a Samsung Rant and dont exactly like the web browser so i was wondering exactly how i would go about sharing my data connection with the 8525 via blutetooth. I tried it once and this is what i did:
1. I went to settings and clicked on connection settings under the connections tab.
2. clicked on Add a new modem connection under "My ISP"
3. When i do that it asks to enter a name for the connection and to select a modem, so i select bluetooth as modem and click next.
4. Then it asks for the device the connection is on and i select my rant and hit next
5. then it asks exactly this and has a text box under it: "Enter the number exactly as it should be dialed. include extra numbers, such as an ouside line or credit card" didnt exactly know what to put here so i just put a few randon numbers in to see what next step would be
6. then it asks for user name password and domain....dont know what to put here so i just clicked finish
7. when i try to connect to it. it says connecting and a message on my rant says entering into bluetooth data mode, and the 8525 tries to connect for a minute and says connection failed and goes back to today screen.
So if anybody could tell me in detail what info it is that i need it would be great. and also under select modem drop-down box there is a selection called "cellular line(GPRS, 3G)" is it possible i could just put the info for the data plan in there and it connect to the sprint data plan if that is possible..if it is can you tell me in detail the information u need and how to do it......THANKS

Hello all,
I am very sorry to be posting this as I am sure it has been covered somewhere else but I am in a fix.
Next week I am going to be staying in a house that is being renovated therefore it has all electrics and stuff but no phone lines. However I need interenet connections as I am researching for masters dissertation in a week I have got off work.
I have been looking into 3g and GPRS data cards but them seem unreliable and am worried that I just will not be able to download and research PDF files quicly enough. Also with all that research the cost could mount up.
I am also unsure of any wi-fi hotspots and do not currently have wi-fi software.
So what do you think is my best option, I have an XDA 2 an IBM Pentium 4 Thinkpad, and if necessary I will have to speand money.
Please I have looked through the forums but I am a total novice, I just about managed to change my O2 Settings on the XDA to allow me to run it on Orange, other than that I am clueless about setting up the XDA as a modem, either through USB or Bluetooth.
So whats the best, most reliable and most effcient cure for this problem?

By the way I will be staying in postcode area CT20, hopefully this will help with anyone who knows wireless speeds or 3g/gprs connectivity.

I am afraid I cannot help you regarding the best internet options for yourselves, although in my past experience ising an o2 GPRS data card has been quite successful. You can download at near broadband speed. You said you were on orange?? Then I think Orange do a GPRS Card as well which is a little more expensive.
I can, however help you in setting up your XDA as a bluetooth or USB Modem. You will have to change your GPRS Settings where appropiate but here goes...
Xda IIi - Wireless Modem via USB (Win XP)
Disable Activesync on the PC
Open Activesync on the PC and go to to File > Connections Settings (or right click on the activesync icon in the system tray, and choose connection settings).
Untick the option for Allow USB Connection with this Desktop Computer.
Click OK to exit.
Prepare the CD/modem driver
If you have the CD with the modem driver (this is the same CD that contains Activesync and Outlook), insert this into the laptop. If the CD auto-starts you can just cancel it.
If you don't have a CD with the modem driver you can download it here;

Once downloaded you should unzip and copy the USBMDM.INF file to the hard drive (eg. C drive) of your laptop.
Configure the Wireless Modem
Ensure the Xda IIi phone is switched on with a good signal.
IMORTANT: The Xda IIi must not be in the cradle at this stage
On the Xda IIi, go to Start > Programs > Wireless Modem
Tap Tools and then Options
Ensure the 'Preset GPRS Connections" box is ticked
In the 'Access Point Name' field remove whatever is there and enter mobile.o2.co.uk and tap OK
Set the drop-down box to USB and tap on Start
Now plug the USB cradle into the PC and then instert the Xda IIi into the cradle
(do not use a USB Hub, the Xda IIi cradle must plug directly into the PC).
This should now initiate Windows Plug & Play "Found new hardware wizard" on your PC, so follow the next section to install the modem...
Install the Modem
The Found New Hardware Wizard should appear on the PC (if it doesn't then simply remove the Xda IIi from the cradle and replace it again. Alternatively reboot your PC, leaving the Xda II and cradle plugged in to the PC, and the 'found new hardware wizard' should appear).
IMPORTANT: the modem driver will not be installed properly until your PC completes the "Found New Harware Wizard" and gives you the message "Your hardware is installed and ready to use". If you do not see this message then go back and ensure the Xda IIi is in Wireless Modem mode.
Choose Install from a List or Specified Location (advanced), and click Next.
If you have the CD
Choose Don't Search. I will choose the Driver to Install, and click Next.
Click Have Disk.
Set the drop-down box to your CD drive (eg. D drive), and click Browse.
Double click the OEM folder, and then the Drivers folder.
Click once on the USBMDM file, choose Open, and then OK.
In the list of Compatible Devices, choose HTC USB Modem, and click Next.
Click Continue Anyway.
Click Finish
If you don't have the CD and have downloaded the modem driver
Set the drop-down box to your hard drive (eg. C drive)
Click Next
Click Continue Anyway
Click Finish
Setup the Network Connection
On the PC, go to Control Panel > Network Connections
Click Create a New Connection, and click Next.
Choose Connect to the Internet, and click Next.
Choose Setup my Connection Manually, and click Next.
Choose Connect Using a Dial up Modem, and click Next.
Put a tick against Modem - HTC USB Modem, and click Next.
In the ISP Name field enter a name for your connection, eg. Xda II USB, and click Next.
In the Phone Number field enter *99# and click Next.
Enter Username as faster
Enter Password as password
Click Next.
Click the Add a shortcut to my desktop box if required.
Click Finish.
Click Dial to connect to the Internet.

Troubleshooting
Laptop 'seeing' the xda
Each time you use Wireless Modem it will be neccesasry to connect the device to the laptop in a specific order. If it isn't done in the following order, the laptop can fail to 'see' the Xda IIi.
1. Put the Xda IIi into ‘wireless modem mode’
2. Insert the USB cradle into the laptop
3. Insert the Xda IIi into the cradle

Xda IIi Wireless Modem via Bluetooth (Microsoft)
This setup uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack built into Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Switch on Bluetooth on the Xda IIi
Tap the Bluetooth icon in the bottom right corner of the device and choose On.
Configure the Wireless Modem
Ensure the Xda IIi phone is switched on with a good signal.
On the Xda IIi, go to Start > Programs > Wireless Modem
Tap Tools and then Options
Ensure the 'Preset GPRS Connections" box is ticked
In the 'Access Point Name' field remove whatever is there and enter mobile.o2.co.uk and tap OK
Set the drop-down box to Bluetooth and tap on Start
Pair the devices and install the Bluetooth modem
On the laptop/PC double click the 'Bluetooth Devices' icon within Control Panel (or double click the bluetooth icon in the system tray)
You should now be in the Devices tab. Click Add
Tick the box for "My device is set up and ready to be found" and click Next
The laptop/PC will search and find your Xda IIi (default name will be 'Pocket_PC' unless you have changed it). Click on your device name and click Next
You can now choose to set your own passkey if you wish. Click on "Let me choose my own passkey" and then enter a number of your choice, and click Next
The Xda IIi will now pop up a screen that asked you to enter the passkey. Type in the same passkey you entered in the laptop/PC and tap OK in the top right corner.
The laptop PC will now install the Bluetooth Modem. When finished you should see the message "Your device is installed and ready to use".
The Xda IIi will ask you to accept the pairing. Tap Yes on the Xda IIi.
Click Finish on the laptop/PC
Setup a Network Connection
Go to Control Panel and double click Network Connections
Click Create a new Connection
Click Next
Choose Connect to the Internet and click Next
Choose Setup my Connection Manually and click Next
Choose Connect using a Dialup modem and click Next
Tick Modem - Standard Modem over Bluetooth link and click Next
In the ISP Name field type Xda IIi Bluetooth (or a name of your choice) and click Next
In the Phone Number field enter *99# and click Next
In the Username field enter faster
In the Password field enter password
In the Confirm Password field enter password
Click Next
Put a tick in the 'Add a shortcut to the desktop' if required
Click Finish
From the dial-up box click Dial to connect to the Internet

umts/3g speed ==Theoretical maximum speeds of up to 2Mb per second
wifi well guess it would depend on the hotspock (max 11Mb/sec though and i dont even this that the xda2's sdio slot can reach those speeds) or heck if the guy next door have his own wifi network you can talk him into getting access to it
(of cause if you get a wifi card for the laptop then you could reach a max 108Mb/sec depending on the wifi network connected to)
about how you go about setting the xda2 up as a modem o2 and tmobile and orange and all those have pdf's describing how you do it
Hello again, thanks for the help but got a problem, downloaded the zip and put it into drive c: but when try to open it just says this does not provide the information.
I do not have the XDA disk, got as far as searching for modem software but no recognition of extraxted zip file you specify,
Am i missing something or do i need to use the exe file?
Please help am I getting closer or am as I feel a very long way from getting this working?

rather ironic, but i was in your same position last year.
I never managed to get the wireless modem working, but i have several storage cards, and a card reader, so i merely used my O2 gprs, downloaded what documents i needed onto my pda/storage card (using something like netfront--free version is good, paid verison even better), then used the card reader to transfer it over.
don't know if this is much help for you, but hope you get your problem solved.

There is a TON of confusion on this subject throughout the internet. I know it can be done (and has been done). Cingular is charging people per KB for using the 8125 as a usb modem. It would be awesome if someone could give a detailed summary of how this is done. Thanks! :lol:

Here is how you can do it (but I think you will still be charged per KB)
I had some trouble getting this to work so I thought I'd post a faq explaining how to do it.
Driver Installation
1) Insert the CD that came with the phone into your drive. Close the window that opens up.
2) Open up Activesync and go to File - Connection Settings. Remove the check from the box next to "allow USB connections"
3) Connect your Cingular 8125 to your Computer via USB
4) On the 8125 go to Start - Programs - Modem Link
5) In Modem Link choose USB under Connection and wap.cingular under Access Point Name.
6) Choose "activate" in modem link
7) Your computer should recognize the device and an "add new hardware" wizard should appear.
8) Choose "No, not this time" and click next
9) Choose "Install from a list or specific location [Advanced]" and click next
10) Choose "Search for the best driver in these locations"
11) Check the box next to "Include this location in the search"
12) Browse to the Following location [CD Drive]:\OEM\APPS\Drivers\USB Modem
13) Click Next
14) A dialog box will pop up, click Continue Anyway
15) Click Finish to complete the driver installation
Connection setup

The problem is that in order to tether a device, you need to dial *99# which I believe Cingular has a record of. They can then track all calls to this number and charge you accordingly.
Unless there was some other way of tethering that doesn't require this step I think we are out of luck.
I don't know if this is possible on the Pocket PC, but I would imagine that since a GPRS connection gives you an IP address then it could be possible to write an application that routes that IP over the Wizard's WiFi connection. If this can be done then you could thereotically turn the Wizard into a mini wireless router that accepts ad-hoc connections.
I've been reading HowardForums and apparently if you have MediaNet unlimited you can tether and Cingular won't know. I'm not sure if this is correct but members have claimed to be doing it for years.

I don't think it is a matter of not knowing since you use a different protocol address (wap instead of isp).
The issue is the fact that the medianet plan and data plan are relatively and many technical issues are still being worked on. Couple that with untrained customer service reps and there are many people using medianet. Technically, if you read the site or try to order online, PDA phones require the dataplan @ $40 per month for unlimited. However, if you call, you can most likely order medianet. I called twice and both times was offered medianet for my 8125. The first rep said it was totally unlimited with no restrictions. The second rep said that it was unlimited but I couldn't tether it. So even their own employees don't understand the plans. There is also suspicion that extremely high bandwidth usage could trigger Cingular to switch your plan. So far I haven't seen that happen to anyone and also non PDA phones with MediaNet can still stream video, etc. and really rack up bandwidth usage.
That said, they may wise up and decide to tighten down in the future and switch people over to the data plan. They will probably lose a lot of customers though so I'm sure they are treading this topic lightly.
One caveat to look out for is no matter what unlimited plan you sign up for, it appears that often mistakes are made and they have a pay-per-use also added on your account. It is easy to just double check your online account and verify that you don't have both an unlimited plan and a bandwidth based account.
I just got my phone today and will be adding medianet shortly. Have to figure out some features, flash the rom, etc. first.
Well I understand that the wap APN is the one used by MediaNet, as opposed to the isp APN which is used by the dedicated data plans. The question is, even if you used the wap APN to tether (under the guise of using the standard medianet feature on a phone) would they be able to tell? Is *99# strictly an internal GSM phone function, or is it something that gets sent to Cingular which they could be made aware of?
If the former is the case then the only way Cingular could even be aware of tethering is if they monitored your data usage to see how much bandwidth you're using. While it's possible that you could be racking up 100 MB a month on your phone's wap browser it's highly unlikely, so they could just put two and two together and realize you're tethering and then shut off your service. That sort of thing is obviously not monitored all the time and that could be why some people are getting away with it.
If the latter is the case then Cingular would absolutely have a way to know when you tether a device, and regardless of wether or not they actively monitor these connections tethering a device on the regular unlimited medianet poses a significantly higher risk to your account status and bill than them just guessing by looking at KB transfers.
Once again, the million dollar question. Is *99# an internal function, or does Cingular have a way to know whenever you dial this number? Does tethering only appear to them as a phone accessing the internet or can they tell whenever you use an external device with the phone?

Is there anyway to be able to take the 8125 from computer to computer and just connect the PC (via USB) to the internet. For example, I go to a friends house...they have a PC but does not have internet access. Is it possible to take my phone connect it to there PC and be up and running?? Or do you really need the CD to install the modem drivers??
If you do need the modem drivers. Can you just store them on the phone then transfer them over to the PC so you dont have to carry around the CD. Thanx

After I successfully updated to the latest WM6 rom I can no longer connect to the internet on the cingular network. I have tried to reprogram all the connection information from another source on the internet but my browsers are not picking up the settings.
If anyone can shed some light on the situation I would be very grateful.

Try applying this cab file to restore your settings. It should work for connecting through the wap.cingular APN.
Thanks for the quick reply I tried applying this cab file and installed very smoothly. Do I need to go to the connections settings and change something because it stil did not work.
I also have an issue with the sim manager, it will not start and I get a message that "phone is not ready please try in 15 minutes" have you encountered these problems when you upgraded?

I haven't had any problems after upgrading to any of the ROMs I've flashed. What you might want to do is set up a new connection using the isp.cingular APN. The username would be [email protected] and the password is CINGULAR1. Call it My ISP or REAL ISP, whatever you want. Then, go to Start>Settings>Connections>Connections>Advanced. Tap "Select Network" and choose the isp.cingular network as your default. Tap and hold on that network and choose "Connect". Can you now connect??
nevermind I didnt know I had to go to the connections setup and change it to MyISP, and now it works great.
I restarted the phone and the message that the "phone is not ready" went away but the problem comes back when I turn the wi-fi on and the phone goes on stand by. If I turn the phone back on I see that the wi-fi is disconnected and it has to reconnect everytime, and I also get the message (cannot execute\windows\nrdwakeup.exe).
Do You have any idea what could be happening.

Using the Off the shelf Verizon ROM with nothing else installed. the phone does NOT have a data plan.
When I turn on WiFi I am able to see all the networks but am unable to connect to any of them (secure or unsecure). The phone goes into "Connecting" mode and never connects to it. I've tried an open wifi (the one at starbucks), a WEP enabled wireless network (and yes I did put in the Netkey/password), and now a WPA network. All with the same result.
Everytime I try to do anything data related it tries to dial the #777 and do PPP over the cell line.
Is there anywhere/anyway to drop the Verizon Data Network. I deleted it and it comes right back each time.

Well there is no way to delete but there is a way to stop accidently dialing #777 by going to start>settings>connections tab>connections>Then under the carries's name (mine says sprint) there should be 3 clickable links click the one called Manage Existing connections>Press new>The setup will tell u how to do it for connection name i just used my name u can use anything you want press next after that>When it asked for the number dialed put #777 press next>It will take u to a login page Make a username BUT DON'T MAKE A PASS DO NOT MAKE A PASSWORD then press finish and choose the one you just made as ur primary one (put a dot in the little circle next to the name of the connection u just made) then press ok now test it out by hitting the internet button without the wifi on or anything if you did it right it should take you to a login page that you can just close to stop yourself dialeng #777
This is probably not the case, but if you can't even connect to unsecure networks, the signal strength is probably too weak. (Probably not the case if you are sitting right into the Starbucks)
I blocked data access on my phone and never went though the wizard on the phone. My phone doesn't even attempt to dial or do anything if i am not connected via ActiveSync or WiFi. Maybe you have a defective phone? Good luck.
Stock VZW ROM will have the default wifi power settings wrong to actually be able to connect to anything. Fix this by going to Settings-Connections-Wireless LAN-Power Mode and moving the slider all the way to Best Performance. This should enable you to connect to access points.

I always wondered what that power slider actually changes. I usually leave mine on best battery and still connect to my home network. What does best performance change?

When I select "data connexion off" it comes automatically back on "on" position from time to time as if a software is forcing the use of it.
Is there a way to force it down?
For your information, I've been struggling for a while with my conexions overall as the flight mode prevent my gps from working so I tend to use the phone in normal mode except that I select data conexion off and I dont enter rhe code pin to prevent any communications! Even though, I still get some extra fee from my provider due to data transfert! I have a french HD2 working with bouygues (french provider) and I have been charged 8 euros despite all my effort to avoid any data transfert!

Offline
On the Home screen, slide to the Settings tab and then tap Menu > All Settings. Tap Connections > Wi-Fi and then tap the Wireless Networks button. The Configure Wireless Networks screen then opens. Under My ISP Tap Add New (or Menu > Add New) modemconnection, give it the name "Offline" and select mobile connection (GPRS). Then Next give the accespoint "Offline" again, go to Next and done.
Now to go offline select under existing connections under My ISP Offline. To go online again select your phone provider.
With this methode you don't need to install any program
