Wifi and Internet Access on Verizon Stock ROM - Mogul, XV6800 General

Using the Off the shelf Verizon ROM with nothing else installed. the phone does NOT have a data plan.
When I turn on WiFi I am able to see all the networks but am unable to connect to any of them (secure or unsecure). The phone goes into "Connecting" mode and never connects to it. I've tried an open wifi (the one at starbucks), a WEP enabled wireless network (and yes I did put in the Netkey/password), and now a WPA network. All with the same result.
Everytime I try to do anything data related it tries to dial the #777 and do PPP over the cell line.
Is there anywhere/anyway to drop the Verizon Data Network. I deleted it and it comes right back each time.

Well there is no way to delete but there is a way to stop accidently dialing #777 by going to start>settings>connections tab>connections>Then under the carries's name (mine says sprint) there should be 3 clickable links click the one called Manage Existing connections>Press new>The setup will tell u how to do it for connection name i just used my name u can use anything you want press next after that>When it asked for the number dialed put #777 press next>It will take u to a login page Make a username BUT DON'T MAKE A PASS DO NOT MAKE A PASSWORD then press finish and choose the one you just made as ur primary one (put a dot in the little circle next to the name of the connection u just made) then press ok now test it out by hitting the internet button without the wifi on or anything if you did it right it should take you to a login page that you can just close to stop yourself dialeng #777

This is probably not the case, but if you can't even connect to unsecure networks, the signal strength is probably too weak. (Probably not the case if you are sitting right into the Starbucks)
I blocked data access on my phone and never went though the wizard on the phone. My phone doesn't even attempt to dial or do anything if i am not connected via ActiveSync or WiFi. Maybe you have a defective phone? Good luck.

Stock VZW ROM will have the default wifi power settings wrong to actually be able to connect to anything. Fix this by going to Settings-Connections-Wireless LAN-Power Mode and moving the slider all the way to Best Performance. This should enable you to connect to access points.

I always wondered what that power slider actually changes. I usually leave mine on best battery and still connect to my home network. What does best performance change?

How can i turn GPRS off?

My vario randomly connects to GPRS without asking me, i suspect this will be costing me on my bill, so I'd like to turn it off. How do i do that?
my XDA mini s does the same. But it is a WM problem. Let me describe my common situation.
Connected to Wifi, running MSN Messenger. Left device for a while and it went sleeping. It also turns off Wifi! But then when MSN needs to connect in the background, it goes to GPRS!! When I wake up my device, it has already used GPRS for MSN and when it wakes, it tries to connect back to my Wifi!!!!
I'm on roaming so the GPRS is dear-er.
Best way, is to create a null modem, or invalid connection. Set your device to connect to that null connection automatically when requesting for internet access. Not the best, but at least it won't cost you or me.
The thing is it does it when I'm not even doing anything, it just pops that gprs icon up and does its own thing.
OK I didnt quite follow what you said there, so imagine I'm an idiot who dosent understand what a null connection is, then explain it to me again....
Long press hang-down key.... (2-3 sec)
so imagine I'm an idiot who dosent understand what a null connection is, then explain it to me again....[/quote]
lol like your response,
I do agree with Humps, dont know of a way to turn of the gprs but his way does ensure it wont connect on its own.
when you goto settings/connections/connections (this is wm2003 that i refer to) you will see your t-mobile settings.
and the options to manage existing connections. go into here and create a new connection give it anyname you want (you want it not to work) give it any settings it will accept that are wrong,
then from the connections page at the bottom you have tasks and advanced.
when you want GPRS active goto advanced and select t-mobile
when you dont want it to be able to connect go back to the advanced screen and select the dodgy one you just created.
then if it tries to connect the settings will all be wrong and it will fail.
good plan.
I really wish it would ask permission to go online with gprs...personally I changed the name of the access point in my o2 settings, so it can't connect until I change it back to the proper name.

Even after a 30 second press, it still stays connected with the 'G' icon in the top of the screen.
I've tried setting up a new GPRS called dummy, so I'll se how it goes.
Is it the big [G] icon, or the small G with arrows around it?
Because the former just means that GPRS is available - only the latter means that you're connected to it.
you want to give SPB GPRS Monitor a try, even if only for the trial it will let you know if its using any while its idle,
good app would be well worth keeping in it.

Help with wifi not working

I have done hard reset and soft resets and still my wifi is not connecting.
Finally my EDGE is working great but wifi not. Whenever I try to connect my SSID is set to "EMC Wireless Internal" channel 11. I have no idea where this cam from but I can not get rid of it. I have a new FIOS Actiontec router with wireless enabled to my network name, channel 10. And Hitchhiker tries to connect but it keeps getting bumped off.
I have gone into MediaNet and turned off the proxy and checked for it to go onto the internet on Cingular GPRS.
I have not had a problem connecting before on wifi. I wonder if the router is a problem here, or if my phone settings are screwed up.
And ideas?
Thanks
The WiFi - EDGE contengency
*The Bad News*
By default, if EDGE/GPRS is configured to work, WiFi is rendered useless.
You didnt mention what carrier you have. I have Cingular and they even state on there website that If you configure the Edge/GRPS to connect, then WiFi may not work.
*The Good news*
I have my 8125 working with both Edge and WiFi. Heres what I did:
1. Open Connnections and click on the 'ADVANCED' tab.
2. Click on 'SELECT NETWORKS'.
3. The top pull down should be set to 'MY ISP' or, if you have named your WiFi connection something different, select it here.
4. Click 'EDIT' under this pull down and set connection to 'AUTO PICK'. 'OK' back to Network Management screen.
5. The bottom pull down should be set to 'MEDIA NE'T.
6. Click on 'EDIT' under this pull down. This is where you will set up EDGE using your carrier's settings.
7. 'OK' your way back out. Your done.
These settings let WiFi try to connect first. If no WiFi is available then EDGE/GPRS is used.
Good Luck!
Thank you! Worked for me, but videos streamed from orb still aren't working
Wierd-Fi
I also have WiFi problems after installing HTC official upgrade
ROM 2.25.11.1 WWE
Date 5/11/06
Radio 02.25.11
Protocol 4.1.13.12
ExtROM 2.25.11.102
Everything is great except after successful connection to home WiFi it disconnects after maybe 5 to 15 seconds ... network becomes "unavailable" .. no error message. This happens even when not connected to CIngular EDGE/GPRS (flight mode ON then, individually enable WiFi ON for what that's worth). When I delete my home network WiFi entry to force a re-recognition and setup, it recognizes the wireless net just fine (again) but same behavior.
All my settings are already set as suggested by ralugniC8125 in this thread. I had not tried any of the other ROMs with added features/hacks/fixes found on this website ... would any of them behave differently, you think? PHone was bought from Cingular .. I have not done any unlock procedure (don't really need to from a service standpoint but will if necessary to make a new ROM work right).
Any thoughts appreciated...

I have just purchased an unlocked Tilt from eBay. I have been scanning the wiki for days now, along with other sources, and to no avail. I still cannot get my WiFi to work properly. If any one has had this issue and has found a solution, I would love to know it!
ok, here's a suggestion since none of you have mentioned it.
Diable the MAC (Media Access Control) Binding on the router. This should help.
Maybe yall can help me now I have it attempting to connect however it only connects to gprs and it even shows it has a great wifi signal
Still Wifi-less and Woeful

Thanks for the suggestion. This did not help unfortunately. I should mention that I have tried to access several different types of routers... with and without security, and while they are showing up as being available, they will not stay connected for more than a second or two.
Any other possibilities?

WING and WiFi

My problems with my WiFi on the Wing (Very FRUSTRATED )!
1. When the screen turns off, the Wifi turns off. Meaning I cant use this as my email machine like a blackberry. I have to turn the screen on to get the wifi back on.
2. The Wifi it keeps "forgetting" the WEP key even though I programmed it. It happens once a week (approx)
3. The wifi keep suggesting that I can connect to all these weird SSID's around me when I have my own router set up in the phone. Just connect to mine and stop asking. At work, At Home, At my friends house, At the cafe down the street. If you dont find these, dont ask. if you do, just connect, stop asking. Stop not connecting.
4. The wifi keeps asking if I want to hook up to LOCKED SSID's. Hey, they are locked, if I knew the wep key I would try to connect manually. Stop asking! Is there a patch that allows the phone to suggest connecting to the OPEN wireless networks after it actually makes sure there is actual internet access in there?
5. How do I tell the phone: NEVER TRIES TO CONNECT TO THE EDGE OR GPRS for data. I DONT HAVE THE SERVICE. The wifi keeps turning off and the phone TRIES to get on T-Mobile GPRS or Edge all the time. I even deleted T-Mobile from my internet connections (I dont have internet access on my t-mobile account as it was extremely slow and I have Wifi everywhere I go, except when I am driving)
After months of use, I still have not been able to use my Wifi. In fact the Wifi does not connect to my router anymore, not even once. I gave up and I am paying for the $5.99 service now.
Sounds like you need to take a look around these forums... All your issues have been posted over the net and how to fix or actually "customize" them are everywhere. You may want to read the manual too since that tells you alot of stuff also.
Reading is Essential!!
The easiest thing to do is start over: reset your router (you might check out your setting on your router as well to make sure your encryption is the same and you haven't been hyjacked.
The messages of secure sites is normal: keep dismissing and it will get it. The ones you normally setup on will automatically log on.
As far as the losing the encryption, thats new: the only way I know to lose it is to reset it, or the phone crashes!!
My suggestion is to READ the manual on WIFI settings. read, try read & try.
it only took me 2 weeks to set everything up, and I never had these many issues.
Have fun. Peace

Lock to only one WIFI network-found a workaround

I've tried searches but come up blank on this.
When at home, I'd like to lock onto only my wireless net and have the device ignore all others it detects (like all my neighbors' nets).
Reason is occasionally it will try to attach to other networks in preference to mine, even though it is clearly the strongest signal. Very annoying.
ATT WM6 shipped rom, ATT branded 8525
Any advice? Or point me to an appropriate prior discussion?
EDIT-----------------------------------------------------
Found a solution of sorts.
I went into every UNWANTED network and put in the following settings:
Connects to - WORK
This is a hidden network - checked
Authentication - WPA2-PSK
Data encryption - AES
Network key: bogus random keystrokes
Use IEEE802..... - checked
Now if I attempt to connect to another network - whether it is available or not - or if my net goes down temporarily, the 8525 tries for just seconds on the other entries then eventually reverts back to mine! Exactly the end result I wanted, just not the path I hoped to take. (lol)
I did a sort of reverse war-walk around the neighborhood. I collected all the net names and put in the above settings. All is happy now.
I don't know WHICH setting from above is key to the result. I don't really feel like exploring this further.
Go to Settings--Connections--WiFI.
Delete the unnecessary network cards (other routers that you may have used in the past) and leave only the one you want.
Should auto connect to yours only and if it's not there then it will start to look for others.
Still looking

Thanks. I've done that in the past, and just did it again. As I've been writing this reply is has been connected just to my network, but now the two others are also back onto the list.
For whatever reason, my home wireless router will occasionally drop and then come on again. On my laptop, I see the little balloon in the bottom saying "unable to connect to preferred network" and then a moment later, "Connected to XXXX". Even though the other networks can be seen, they are not in the preferred network list, so they never cause a problem.
On the 8525 I haven't found anything like the "preferred network" list, and the little tick box that says "Automatically attach to non-preferred networks", so when my router drops, it goes off and tries to attach to another net. It actually does make communications link, but not connected fully because they are protected networks. It does not drop them and come back to my net when it comes back up.
Am I just missing this somewhere in the settings? I think I've been to every option available and haven't found it.

WTF!!! Crazy data connection!

I have disabled the connection before, but now i can change the password, delete anything and whatnot and the fone will still FORCE connect itself to the data connection, which is gonna cost me big $$. This only happens once I open up opera/pie/google maps though.
right now my connection is basically:
Name:blahhhh
number:#97f399gg
username:sefse
password:hhhhh
domain*:xxxxxdaaa
i have tried everything, even completly deleting all the accounts.
what seems to happen is that the password goes for 5 digits to 16 somehow.
idk if that is back to what it is supposed to be with the #777 connection.
Using 3.0.1 custom DCD Rom, with opera, n some other bs programs
Anyhelp on how to stop this is appreciated

Google Maps and other apps that require data will automatically start a data connection if you initiate them.
If you turn on WiFi this should stop it because you are using another way of connecting.
Do you use your data plan from your carrier? If not you can always go to the EPST settings and disable EVDO and just use 1X. This will kill all data and just let you use the CDMA settings.
Okkkkk
I was able to attempt to activate them before and would just get an error, expectially with PIE, but now idk.
No i do not have the data plan, and im about 2-3MB into data which sucks. Im supposed to have a data block but i guess not.
To kill the EVDO settings, what would that be under?
( making the data parameters section blank did not work)
Also if i do this will i still be able to connect to Rev-A and whatnot?
[obv not do EVDO or able to send mms, but those two i can live without]

You dont neccessaraly kill EVDO all you are doing is only letting your phone see a CDMA signal. Like for making calls and such. This will iliminate EVDO / REV A , but it is simple to go back. Plus i learned that it gave me way better coverage signal, but with no ability to use data.
Completely disable 3g data connections forever, save wifi
This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. To be safe, you may have to delete the Verizon Or "Internet" Connection on the Tasks Tab of Settings > Connections > Connections. Save and exit.
Voila! Wifi, yes; 3g, no! No more nasty billing surprises.
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.
Hope it helps.
Hi,
Can you tell me where to find the guardian.exe file. I cant locate it any where is it hidden perhaps. I need to disable wifi for this phone. The property that I have does not have wifi currently. So the Wifi feature drains the battery. Thank you very very much if you can provide the information.

I just use the slider switch on the side of the phone to enable/disable wifi. I use RyanMogul's ROM and it works like a charm.
I like nueWiFiSwitch - Hardware Switch (it's in Ryan's ROM I'm using) Disable the wifi switch and whenever I want to use it, I turn it on with Communication Manager.
(the hardware switch would turn on random times when putting in or out of my pocket, etc. Works great!
