I've been doing a lot of research, and reading on the G1 forum, but i was just curious what you guys thought about the new Tmobile G1. It looks like a really slick phone and I'm seriously thinking about ordering it.
I know a lot of people will post the "its awesome" pitch.... but honestly
pros: extremely powerful hardware with a very stable operating system.
cons: the operating system is very new... meaning that there is no real software or rom development out there for it.... meaning no customization. (and currently no real games at all!!!! lol)
conclusion: im happy enough with my wing that i PERSONALLY will stick with it for a while (especially with ttrans new 7.4 rom - great performance and plenty of space).... as soon as some real progress is made in development for android i will buy a G1
I pre-ordered mine 2 hours ago and can't wait to get mine on November 10th.
I have the Wing and love it but I'm the type of person that gets bored really fast. So G1 here I come!

Well if your that type of person then you will only be entertained by the G1 for about a week... i've been doing some reseach on it and most of the reviews say that its pretty basic and needs work by developers! the only reason i would get one is the fact that it has the hardware to support 3G..but my location wont have it till next year so im happy with my wing!!
i personally love my wing
i can see my self upgrading to the touch pro instead of the g1
i ilke the innovative look the the g1 but if i get some hand on with it i can see which phone i will go to
i have had a lot of hands on with the touch diamond so i can fix a lot of the issues with the touch pro if i get it
Look, I loved my Wing when I had it too. But any one who thinks the G1 won't blow the Wing out of the water is ridiculously stupid. And I don't say that to offend any one either. Do some research. Look at what the phone can do and what they phone will do in the future. People can make applications. That right there says a bunch. Imagine the kind of **** we'll be able to use. Android may be new, but it's gotten great reviews. As time goes on, it will only get better for the G1 and its users. There's a reason they've sold over 1.5 million pre-orders for the G1. Stick with Windows Mobile if you want, lol.

I just wish I had one so I could actually spend time with it. The fact that it's more or less open source, means there will be a ton of programs and applications once there is time to make them. I think I'll hold off for a bit, but 179 is ridiculously cheap compared to the wing, and has the hardware to smoke, but for the time being, I think I'll just keep moddin my wing and do some more research.

Nah, I'm going to wait and do more research and see what programs, roms, and games become available. I think I'll stick with the wing for now, and just mod and flash roms every other week! lol. But, the G1 is only 179 so thats a huge price drop. Either way, I really can't wait to see what becomes available for the G1.
what would be great would be a g1 wm6 port - with fully functional drivers..... i know everyone is talking about getting android on their phone, but just think for a second how nice it would be to get a nice new extremely fast phone for 170 odd dollars and continue using all the software you are familiar with.... and then as soon as application development and customization become mainsteam for android you could always flash back. i know its too much to wish for because of the lack of drivers, but it would be great for me if it ended up happening

You know, that would be PERFECT. I'm really not that familiar with the Android o.s., but if they could incorporate it into WM6, then it would be hands down the winner. We could use everything we already use to load applications, etc. Since it's supposed to be open source, maybe somebody will figure out how to do it?!?
G1 vs Wing
This month in PC Magazine (October 2008) Sascha Sagan, the director of new product reviews, said this,"never buy a product in the first few weeks after it comes out. Wait a month. By then... you will be able to tell if something is really worth a buy".
My two cents,
Paul D.
G1 will eventually be better than the wing, just not now. There's alot of holes that need patching up in the os to make it a real competitor to wm. When u compare Android right now to say ttran otp 7.x, Android isn't even in the same league. But give it some time, and maybe Android 2.0, then u'll really start seeing what G1 can do.
Also, this will be a fun phone in regards to xda's developing and hacking community and also to us, the end-user. As people start accessing and examing the innards of Android, who knows what juicy things can be created and imagined. Only issue i see is the stuff they left out, but the os seems to be solid with no real problems experienced. Messaging needs work, with mms being the main problem (can't send gifs or video).

Yeah I agree. Seeing how this phone is really meant to be modified, I can't even imagine the amount of software, roms, mods, etc there will be for this phone. I do think it will take some time, so I believe I will hold off, but I'm pretty excited about it.

that is exactly what i want. i just want to keep useing windows mobile. it has been around for ever (ce). hopefully someone in the linux community will figure out how to flash it to what ever you want.
I am a G1/Wing owner. I got my G1 2 days ago and i can tell you, i am very happy with the phone so far. I do miss using TTran's OPT and hope they port TouchFlo2D to Android. The Manilla Theme is the best i've seen!
I am also one of those people that would much rather run Linux on my PCs at home, but don't because i am in the IT field so i need to stay current on Windows. Anyhow, I understand people wanting to wait and recommend most do that. I am not usually the type to jump on a product at Version 1 until some updates and public testing has been done. But i am looking forward to Android's growing pains!
I just upgraded to a G1. What I did was, when the G1 presale was announced, I called to say I was going to cancel my service soon and asked what they would offer to keep me. The CS rep asked what I had in mind. I said I wanted the to see if there was a way to get the G1 with 1 a year contract. The CS rep told me not until after the actual launch but she would lower my unlimited family text messaging to $9.99 permanently if I would wait until the launch to decide. I agreed. So today, I called back for the G1. They offered me the G1 for $179 + NO $18 upgrade fee if I agreed to keep my four lines for 1 year. So, that's what I did. I wasn't going to cancel anyway because, it's hard top beat T-Mo's rates, even if the coverage is a little weaker than other carriers in my area. My Wing will likely be up for sale after I evaluate the G1.
Update:
I just canceled my order. I don't want to put $800 on the line to save $300.
Hey...
It might be a noobish question but I just couldn't find a decent answer:
With the release of the HTC Desire, since its very alike the HD2 hardware-wise, is there any chance of it helping with the release of a working Android ROM for the HD2?
I really want to get rid of WinMo 6.5... I hate it...
Thanks
Has been answered many times before, you should have searched.
Anyway, the answer is no, its not easier. And its not magically going to happen overnight either.
Mods will close this.

The HD2 is my first smartphone, I bought it because the superb hardware... I didn't know Windows Mobile suck that bad and I also suffered from lack of experience...
Apparently hardware is not nearly enough...
Now that there will be no WinMo 7 no one wants to buy it, at least not in a price I think is worthy...
I thought, hey, if there's a chance I can get Android on this device why not look into it...
I truly hope this day will come; for now I am managing with WinMo...

Flash CleanEX and you will see that WM can be fast!
It would have taken a short amount of time (30 mins) to go to a store and demo the phone, or research on the internet, read reviews, watch videos, post your questions BEFORE going out and buying the phone and then moaning how much you hate it.
Society now apparently is made up of people who are unable to make decisions for themselves even when the pertinent facts are readily available.

Meh, you think everyone got 'em fancy stores?
I pre-ordered it... Yes, sometimes there's a hype and people get excited and make emotional decisions... I bet you don't go to the store and research everything you buy...
And there's a long way from moaning about stuff to simply asking one question politely..

I actually research most everything I buy... especially expensive things. It pisses my girlfriend off to no end when I sit and compare different brands or features on things and not just make a quick decision.
I was watching and reading about the HD2 for almost 6 months before I finally got it (as it wasn't released in the US until recently). I love Windows Mobile. I find it to be the most versatile, customizable mobile OS and I'm very upset that MS is changing all that when Windows Phone 7 comes.

I wish I could rate you up like the comments on DailyTech!
Anyway, I'm not sure I understand all the WinMo haters. I read these reviews of the HD2 saying how amazing the hardware is, but the OS sucks... Yet they don't give any reasons the OS sucks.
Sure, I can see a year or two ago, back in the 6.0/6.1 days saying it is ugly... Still, what does ugly keep you from doing? Showing your phone off to the other shallow people around you?
Then I hear "OOOoo, the Marketplace sux0rs!" and I wonder to myself, how did ANYONE survive before a "marketplace." Oh yeah, search online and find what you want, I remember now. Do that, and you'll find that WinMo has a HUGE application pool to draw from.
Now it is "Oh it sux cause it is dead thanks to WP7." Sorry, another lame excuse. Why? Because all WP7 does for anyone, is give it a fancy interface, that if you don't like it... Well, MS says screw you!
So to the OP looking for Android on your HD2, give your HD2 away and buy an Android phone, or help port Android over to the HD2. Just don't come bawling your eyes out to a group who has lived and breathed WinMo for years and say you hate it because it sucks. Maybe it sucks because YOU aren't smart enough to figure it out.
This says it best:
"I can't tell you how frustrated I used to get at supposedly smart people who couldn't care less about power features but instead chose the "smartphone for dummies" (iphone). In time I realized it was their choice and that people for the most part don't want to think in fact most people spend their day trying to find ways not to think."

Agreed. I've been using WinMo since 2003... before they were all phones and were call pocket pcs. And that's what they are... basicly a pc that fits in your pocket. Now they are even more... they're phones now, too. But people need to remember that they are still pocket pcs and have the same type of learning curve a full pc does. They operate just like windows pcs do.
WinMo was designed as a pocket pc originally, not a phone. Android and iphones, etc were designed to be phones from the beginning. They don't have the same pc functionality like WinMo does. It's a shame that WinMo is nearing the end of it's development life by ms. WP7 is going to be a dumbed down phone now just like the rest.
It seems as though the most hackable phone, the Grandfather of Android has been lacking much attention, I think all the developers have left us! The forums have not had any new ROMs or tiny hacks .
I think it is time to let the G1 and all the other 1.6 or below Android phones lay to rest... (the dump!)
The lack of anything besides Vanilla 2.X roms here lately is a sign of the G1's retirement setting in fully. We all knew this was coming. As soon as they said 2.X would never be given to non rooted users, it was a big blow dealt. Now that we hardly see any new roms and the recent news of the G1 Blaze being very near to release, I think people are just waiting for the right upgrade to come along. Then the G1 will go to the great phone graveyard.

Yeah, ditto, I've noticed the same thing for months now. We G1 users have not been forgotten though, we still have lots of developers who are still working hard for us. I mean, remember a few months ago when we didn't even have fully working eclair roms? Each of which had different broken features, back when OE, CE, and kings AOSP were the best 2.1 roms yet they all lacked camcorder, 3D, etc. Now we have fully functional hardware on froyo roms, We can load custom boot partitions, we can OC way past 528 Mhz, etc.
I have a few ideas to try to implement myself, but I am definately still learning. I just recently installed ubuntu on my main computer (windows sucks lol) and I'm working on building from CM source. Some of my (and other people's) ideas include a reverse ram hack and an OC OV kernel to overclock higher. Wish me luck
Besides, try not to thing about it as how much we have left, but how far we've come. (lol I linked to a song by the same name... listen to it the lyrics are powerful)
Yea. I own a g1 and a mytouch 3g both 32b.. i think i installed mostly every rom for the g1.. now rooting just got boring w. The g1.. i love the phone nd all.. i just dont want to see it go.. after every hack that came out for it.. i have to wait 2 year to get a new android device.. but i kno my g1 will hold up.. still best keyboard/touch screen phone too me..

Yeah I said that this was going to happen back in February when the MyTouch LE and Nexus were coming out. Nobody believed me and in fact I was getting hate mail because of it. Some people were so persistent that the G1 was still going to be developed on for years to come because they had some older WinMo phones that were still being kept up to date. My argument is that Android is growing much faster than WinMo system and has become increasingly popular. To be honest I was caught a little off guard by the MyTouch 1.2/LE devices being outdated so quickly but again, it only backed up my theory that the G1 and MyTouch devices would be obsolete by years end. Most devices out there are made to support the future of Android. Some are even rumored to be dual processor! There would be no way that roms or even apps that can run on 1ghz dual processor devices with 16gb of internal storage can compete with the devices that ran RC-17, RC-19, RC-30, RC-33, etc. A year from now people will be looking at the G1 in awe that we've come so far with Android and more devices will be released. Devices with much better specifications and that can receive upgrades for a least a couple years to come. It pains me to say that HTC wasn't thinking very far ahead when they released the Dream with such limitations but who would have thought that we would have Android systems like Eclair, Froyo or Gingerbread? Hell, I remember back when you couldn't even have widgets on your Android homescreen other than the clock. Now look at your screen. That wasn't too long ago either.

Bam, You nailed.. it!
I saw it. I knew this hardware was going to be outdated very quickly. That's the number one thing that drives me to a phone is hardware, and G1 never had enough. MT3G caught my attention, and now I feel buyers remorse for buying so early. Damn good phone, but now its nothing compared to anything else.

All the original MyTouch was a G1 without a keyboard unless you happen to have a 32a device. The 1.2 was a nice step up, but quickly outdated.
I still believe the G1 could stick around in my household for a year or two more as a VOIP/PMP/HTPC remote. but not as a daily phone, let alone one I'd be willing to pay for service on.
Wish I could be bothered to put together a linux box and learn how to make a ROM/kernel with telephone services completely disabled...find out whether or not the wifis are tied to the celluar radio(ie can we free up 92 mb of RAM if we don't need that cell radio active and still keep wifi enabled/gps enabled(i know no to aGPS))...if any of this sounds strange, its 0545 and i'm tired.

So basically you want your G1 phone for strictly a linux based computer system and not for a phone at all, that about it?

Wish I could be bothered to put together a linux box and learn how to make a ROM/kernel with telephone services completely disabled...find out whether or not the wifis are tied to the celluar radio(ie can we free up 92 mb of RAM if we don't need that cell radio active and still keep wifi enabled/gps enabled(i know no to aGPS))...if any of this sounds strange, its 0545 and i'm tired.

Im going to jump in and say YES! Why? Because I am deaf (read hearing impaired, profoundly deaf -- dont call me, nobody will answer, I cant hear you")
I got my first Dream in November 2009. It was because I was sick of the Sidekick and its baked-ness.
December 2009, I rooted the G1 because I quickly got sucked into the rooting forums and wanted to see what it could do.
I have been trying to figure out how to run this phone without phone.apk com.android.phone and Dialer. Its impossible since the telephony part is still tied into the SMS/MMS portions.
My point is...... the telephone part for a hearing user must use about...... say 1GHZ of space. What can this Dream do without all that phone?
I now own 6 Dreams, (1 bought, 5 rescued from the graveyard, all are working beautifully and I have big hopes for them one day) This is not just a phone. Its a beautiful piece of clocked machinery. I believe I will use a G1 until the day I die which will be within 6 decades.
So, instead of sending the G1's to the graveyard how about it

So basically you want your G1 phone for strictly a linux based computer system and not for a phone at all, that about it?

No, I want it to run Android(yes, i know its a linux kernel). I want it to play media, navigate/have maps on sd card so i can replace a standalone gps on long trips, I want it utilize any and all apps that it can, games too. And I want it to do all this w/o the telephone parts taking up precious space. I can put google voice/sipdroid on it for voip capabilities.
yeah. I also want to know if the 64 mb of ram that would be wasted on the baseband radio can be recovered.
I would never give up my G1 even though I said that in the first post but... the G1 is just to amazing to me. The current G1 I own has a screen cable issue so the screen constantly turns black when ever you touch the bottom certainly, now I have to use a P.O.S. Sidekick LX 2007 Brown temporarily until Project Emerald or the G1 Blaze. If I could fix the cable I would gladly use this G1 until it dies before I replace it.
Or you could buy a used g1 on craigslist for 75 bucks. hell, if you got friends with android that have upgraded you might be able to score a free one.
I still use my G1... but i've had some hard times with it in the past... First time rooting I had a problem with the SPL and bricked the phone, it would stay on the G1 screen and not let me do anything else. So, I called Tmo and told them my phone stopped working so they sent me a new one and I returned the bricked one. Got lucky with that. cracked my digitizer once replaced that one from a friends G1 which became a part out. Gonna need to replace the menu button above the trackball later today, something is really wrong with it. Replaced the motherboard because the wifi stopped working never found out how to fix that... Then the HD2 was released... didn't know about it till 2 months later when I started seeing commercials for it so I picked one of those up. wondered what the 1ghz processor was like and HTC sense, this was all before they started putting Android on the HD2's. Just after 2 weeks of owning the phone I leave it on my windshield after a few hours of working on my car and take the car out for a test drive... all the while forgetting my phone... Cracked the screen and made a few scratches on the case but was still fully operational. Few more weeks later and I forget my phone on the roof of my car this time, and am driving about 70mph and hear a thunk and a thud and was asking myself wtf was that?... then I realized I don't have my phone in my lap and I started shaking and freak out a little bit and desperatly try to find it. Luckly I do... however this time I wasn't so lucky. Digitizer is not responsive and since it doesn't have a trackball the phone becomes totally useless. Slide my SIM card in my G1 once again and have been using it for awhile (I took my G1 everywhere my car would go just in case I had some bad luck or needed to use an app off of it.) I'm impressed with the speed of the G1, yes its already outdated but look its running Froyo and to me I figured it would be like putting windows 7 on a computer made in the 90's, but its nothing like that at all, its running it just fine, and sure its not as fast as the EVO 4 but its working good enough to be functional for a daily use phone and show off to my friend who just bought the vibrant and is anticipating the september OTA update to Froyo he was a little upset/jealous that I got it on my phone, and to be honest I had a big smirk on my face when I showed him everything it has.
Boring story I know... haha!

Don't worry I show off my G1 to everyone who owns an Android phone that is newer with better specs. I say "Hey what phone is that?" "Guess what this is?" "a G1!!!!" "What can your phone do?" Mine can do that and this!" ""Why can your G1 do that and my newer phone can't?"" "G1 is to great of a phone... should have kept it "

HAHAHA nice I need to try that with some people. Hopefully some Dev's can get Gingerbread on the G1 and then I can make my friend more jealous because he'll probably have to wait till next year to get it on his phone.
It feels so good to have this G1. A device with out dated specs, but with capabilty of anything out there. Hmmmmm maybe if we just swap in a gpu.... we should build G1s.. just like they build computers

No thanks, just say no to SENSE you know it makes sense
While I like sense as much as the next Guy, you have to understand that with the fast pace that mobile tech is advancing your phone you bought 4 months ago might not have the needed hardware to run said app. Sure they could release it but then you would be like "it is laggy, its slows my phone to a crawl". Not taking into consideration that the app was made for better hardware. Never buy a phone based on updates you hope to get. You will never be happy. As I see more and more new to the smartphone world I see this same thing alot. It is something the older users are use to. Your phone is obsolete five min before you buy it. So make sure it fits your needs for the time being.
Although i'm running sense 3 on my DHD I have signed it, HTC should of done this really, the DHD is still fairly new

Absolutely! You should be happy with what you get instead of sad because of stuff you dont get A wise man once told that.
But 1 year of update service is not too much to ask and the DesireHD is perfectly capable of running Sense3.0 smoothly. Custom Roms prove that. I'm pretty sure though that Sense 3 will come eventually and i better wait a little longer for a bug free and stable release than something rushed just because everyone is crying for it.
Should "of", "potention"? I'm a little worried you guys even spelled your own name correctly.

Wow... do you guys make petitions for everythig now?
The bootloader petition was ok and really needed.
But this gets annoying now. Htc didn't even say that they will release GB for the DHD. It was a nice move from them so be happy with what you get.
It's he same like creating a petition against your parents becaus you get too few pocket money.
Whats next? 3D and a screen size-up to 5" for our DHD?
Sent out of my Free Candy Van.
U ought to be slapped. That was the dumbest thing you could say. Sense 3.0 and software upgrades, are possible. But 5" screen and 3d? Slap yourself

every one : common it was just a suggestion if u agree with it sign it ,if u don't agree don't,
what i meant to say is htc or any other manufacturers should support their devices, and respect their customer, its not about just making new things that makes the customer buy the new device, that what i mean
i used to have x10,and for god sake sony ericsson was awful in supporting,we had android 1.6 when most other ware running foryo,
i know now it will release gb but after a year of delaying ....
and about making petitions for every thing, why not,if u want something u should go for it
and @ pwraggcan ,common u know that most of the people here made mistakes cause they just write fast, maybe u should be a language teacher
sorry if i bothered anyone ,but thats it
