I've got a ppc-6601 (harrier) from Sprint and I'm trying to develop a program to use the location information - hopefully gps coords. Any idea on how to get that info? The program will basically be a location connector - converting phone location info to nmea sentences so any mapping program out there will be able to use the location info. The big question is, how do I get that info from the phone?
Is this a HTC product?
I once looked a (if I remember correctly) Swiss product that was able to show th current location based on the cell-info from the gsm radio.
The trouble seems to be that you need a map calibrated with gsm cell-info.
Remember: you wount get a more detailled specification of the location than approx. 200 metres.
I believe it's built by HTC, but branded by Audiovox. Sprint uses cdma, so the usual gsm location stuff isn't gonna work. Sprint uses the qualcomm/snaptrack technology - gpsOne. Sprint/Qualcomm got a java api out there for MIDP 2.0 phones, but I'm not sure if it'll work w/ ppc phones. This api gives you alot of info - including gps coords. http://www.shaftek.org/blog/archives/000139.html
So any ideas?
The carrier must have a location server online, currently Sprint and Verizon's LBS servers are not ready for point-to-point relay of LBS data.
An Australian based company has managed to extract this info from windows ce devices. From their web site (www.locatrix.com) it also seems as though this kind of service is supported on all mobile phones.
Pretty cool I thought.

Uh, no. That program relies on tracerouting your IP address, and, if available, using their proprietary LBS API that if you want to route into GPSOne, you get to do on your own.
No, it doesn't use traceroute. I've got an i-Mate device here on Vodafone determining location to within 100m. The external API is for other/desktop applications (such as CRM, field management, mapping etc) that may wish to display the device's location.
Friends of mine have also tried their clients for Blackberry and Symbian OS with similiar results...

Well, on the GSM side it has more options (I was referring to the Harrier and CDMA), such as locating the location of the tower and using signal fade information to make a best-guess estimate. Depending on where you live, and how close towers are spaced, it can get pretty close.
Its amazing the amount of people who come on here asking for a certain type of software that they cant seem to find only for someone within minutes to provide a link to said software.
So...
Is there a program/plugin that will kick in the wifi automatically when you run internet explorer ?
Is there any program that will run an app with command line ( load a radio station into real player for example ) even in standby mode at a given date / time ?
Anyone know of anything ?

I'm pretty sure you can find it because it would be actually fairly simple to write.
You can achieve what you wish with MemMaid. Select the Notification Queue tab (2nd from the left) and click the add button
Select the program you wish to run and select "Run at time" as type of event. Here you go! Of course this is not the primary use of MemMaid but it's a great app to have anyway.
I would like a program that would tell me how many hours I have spoken to a contact saved like in the contacts profile. I found a program that could do that but it had a lot of junk and made my cell run slow.
So I bought the X1 last week and I have to say that I’m very impressed about it. I first didn’t know which one to choose: the X1 or Touch HD but after I had seen the HD…. It is just too big and therefore not practical anymore.
So after playing around with the X1 I have a couple of question and maybe you guys can help me. Until now I am not able to change my default weather location to a city which is not in the default list. When using the SPB panel I can choose my city but because most of the time I use the standard X1 panel I like to change it here also. Does somebody know if there is a fix/patch available for changing the default weather location to a city that is not in the list?
I also changed the default button actions where I changed the right button to contacts. However after using the TF3D panel for a while it is resetting the button settings to default when switching to the X1 panel again. Does somebody know is this is a bug in de TF3D panel?
I like to know if it is possible to permanent suppress the ‘making connection to gprs, 3G’ message when connection to internet. I don’t like the message because once an hour I connect to check my mail, update weather etc. and also use the ‘automatic disconnect after idle’ to save battery power.
Is there a way to change the default language of windows mobile without flashing the ROM? I heard there is a registry tweak for this but can’t find anymore info about this.
The last question I have is about the usb-pc connection setting. When I connect my girlfriends mobile (Touch Diamond) it every time asks if you want to use activesync or use it as a diskdrive.
I like to enable this option on my X1 also because now I every time have to go to settings to change the way the phone has to connect (active sync or diskdrive). I though this was a default feature of windows mobile but don’t have the checkbox to enable or disable this question. Does somebody know why?
I hope some of you can help me out with these questions.

The weather locations in the X1 panel is a hardcoded list in the SonyEricssonPanel.dll and CITY.dll files. They collect the weather data from AccuWeather.com so maybe by patching these files with a location that AccuWeather supports it is possible?

Ok, this doesn't sound like something I can do myself.
Do you mind to tell me how to set the auto-disconnect after idle? My X1 keeps the data connection open permanently after periodic mail checks etc... How to do it?

This is not a WM feature, it's a Diamond/TouchPro feature. But I also miss this too (having both a TP and X1) There have been a lot of Diamond features ported to the X1 so I too would appreciate anyone having found a way to include this.

You are right, this morning I discovered that is is a Diamond/TouchPro feature. I tried to install the htc usbtopc popup application found at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427956
After installing you will see the option that we are looking for. However when connecting the usb cable nothing happens. It still connects as you have specified under usb to pc settings. and is not coming with the question: activesync or diskdrive

I think this is because that cab file is just a pop-up which does not link to the actual required program/libraries. I read through the post you mentioned but could not see (for the time being) how it would work on the X1.
Thanks a lot. Unfortunately GPRS seems to suck at my cheapo provider today, so I couldn't quite verify it yet...
Hello all!
I started a new project named OpenCellClient. This application is a scanner for the open service http://www.opencellid.org. This project wants to create a complete database of CellID worldwide, with their locations.
This is very useful for a lot of things, working like a "second GPS", for devices without build in GPS receiver.
More than this, RemoteTracker (version 0.3.0-0 and above) can use this database when the GPS receiver could not find the signal, or if the device does not have this radio inside.
Thinking about the great help this project gives to us, I decide to contribute creating a client for Windows Mobile.
How it works? Start the application and go walk, drive or whatever you want do to outside. You GPS will be turned on and the software will scan for cell towers. Each tower found is stored with their coordinate. You don't need to stay connected to internet spending money transfering data to the opencellid website. You can send the collected data later, in your home, work or any wifi spot. After that, you can make searchs using opencellid web site. And we can't forget: this location will be used by RemoteTracker too.
If you want to give a try, please go to http://opencellclient.sourceforge.net and download the cab file.
Requirements:
- .NET CF 3.5;
- SQLServerCE 3.5.
Keep OpenCellClient up to date!
There is an integration with AppToDate. This application verify if configured softwares are up to date or not. If not, you are alerted, and invited to download the new version! Very cool and useful.
You can download AppToDate here.
After install AppToDate, please download and run OpenCellClient to configure AppToDate.
Try this and don't forget a new version never more!
--> It is a work in progress. In future versions I will make a lot more.
Support this project
You can support this project making a donation clicking here or clicking the banners in the project website.

Joubert
looks great thanks for the contribution! i'm getting ready to download it now.
I drive a lot and i'll be more than happy to contribute for France ID's
Very good
Please don't forget this is my first version and may have bugs. If you find one (or more, of course), let me know!
Cheers,
Joubert
Alas, I am not on GSM, but it is fantastic to see you continue to put out fantastic open-source code and tools. Keep up the great work... RT will be built into my ROM always!
Very nice! Will try it on my way to work.
Question: Will it continue to scan when I 'close' the applciation, i.e. put it in the background and use the phone for other tasks, like - äh - doing a phone call or, surfing the web, etc?
Another application using GPS in longer intervals to conserve the battery found out that the initial fixes after the GPS was powered up again (after 3 secs of no GPS usage, the GPS powers down) can be off a bit. I need to check what they did.
Klaus
Ok, I found a small problem: Although WiFi is enabled and a cell is found, the 'Sent to OpenCellID' menu entry is grayed out.
Klaus
Question: Does the API actually give you the Cells 'in view' or only the cells the device is connected to? Because the first would only give you the cells of your provider and not those of competitors.
Although, I understand this would be out of your control, as it happens behind the scenes.
Klaus
How can I send the collected date to the website? This part is always grayed out and not selectable? Still a bug?

When I exit the app, WiFi gets disabled.
I do have the impression the app stops logging when send to the background, or when the device goes to sleep.
Furthermore my device reacts very sluggish when the app is running in the background.
I hope this feedback helps.

Hi!
This option would be grayed ONLY if your device is not a GSM device. I will release a new version without this rule. I think the test I did is not the same for all devices.

Hi Klaus!
There is a debug option you can turn on. With this option the program create a txt file with debug information you could send to me.
Thank you for your tests

I have tested OpenCellClient and have found the following issues:
1. When I am closing the program with the x-Button (top right corner), OpenCellClient is still visible in the process list and use 1,74M of RAM (visible with TaskManager). When closing with the Exit-Button (down right corner) everything is fine. The process/application is not visible in the Taskmanager.
2. When closing the application the WiFi will be disabled also (already found by other users). The debug-Log does not say anything about WiFi.
3. When enabling WiFi (registry key: wifi) the application crashs after starting the scan process. I know that wifi is not yet enabled, but I have tried it .
I have also 2 wishes:
1. I can change the width of the columns, but after restarting the application I have to change the width again. It is possible to save the width of the columns ?
2. All new CellIds should be visible at the beginning of the list, not at the end.

I have a little remark on the way it works.
Currently, when i click start, it opens the table with cell IDs, starts finding etc. Then i click Send and it brings me back to the welcome screen with the progress bar, ok. But after that i'm unable to go back to the table without stopping and restarting
I'd rather have some kind of tabs so i could swap between screens at will, if possible
Otherwise it worked fine, i sent around 50 different IDs today, no problems so far.

I have a Visonic Wireless intruder alalrm installed at my house, and in the alarm is a GSM module where you can send a text message to the panel to set or unset the alarm, and also dial in and listen to who's in the house.
Is there an app where you can send a pre determined message to the mobile number of the sim card. and perhaps have hot keys so you dont need to keep typing the message?
This app will be really useful to me and thousands of other users who have this alalrm panel, and i know that people will be more than happy to pay for such an app.
The product in question is the UK's best selling domestic alarm system.

Hope one of you developers could help

Hi,
there is java app for mobiles to control intruder panel via ethernet module connected. Please have a look at: http://www.satel.pl/en/produktid/34
There is no avaiable VGA resolution but new version with support of touch screen will be avaiable soon with extended functionality. I know because I am using it with my control panel. Now trough this module I can arm/disarm, control lights, gate, heating, etc from mobile phone. Unfortunately I have to wait for a version on my Diamond. As far I know this product is avaiable in UK or Ireland. All Lloyds TSB banks across UK have that system
I am also using app to watch cameras and control them remotly. There is advanced app for PocketPC, Blackberry and S60 www.alnetsystems.com
With this stuff you can place PCI card in your PC, program router and go. Server application makes avaiability to register easily domain on Alnet server so you don't have to have static one. Additionally for couple pounds you can add I/O card and connect output to input of your control panel to arm/disarm by one click.
You should ask those questions in Q&A.
But as far as I have searched, there is also this - http://www.promixis.com/netremote.php
Altho this requires additional Z-wave or similar technology installed on to PC which should also enable control over most technology-aware applicances, it seems very powerful.
