I'm wondering what the experience has been for people using Opera 8.6. I installed the free beta version months ago, which is working, and I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy the latest retail version.
Any Opera users care to comment on their experience?
Generally I find this a good browser but there a few problems which I must mention:-
1) One cannot configure it to store its Cache to SD card. There are ways around this but nothing out of the box.
2) For large web pages with graphics and annimations vertical scrolling becomes really painful as the page does not scroll smoothly with the vertical bar. This gets really really annoying at times.
3) There is a slight lag between pressing of a link and the browser responding. You tend to press the link repeatedly thinking the browser has not responded and then it hangs. However this is something you soon get used to so not that much of a problem.
4) Quite often it does not load the page fully and gets stuck towards the last bits of the page. This is more so for pages with annimations. The progress bar gets stuck when the page has almost been downloaded and only a small percent is left. You then have to refresh the page and usually the 2nd attempt gets you through the full page.
4) The worst problem for me which has really limited its use is that once you have used this it stops some other programs to start and you have to soft-reset. Typical examples are Netfront, Planmaker and Textmaker. After using Opera and having killed it these programs will often not start without a soft-reset.
As I said at the start it is still a good browser and so I am not mentioning the good things but these are just the glitches which seriously mar the user experience of an otherwise good product. In fact though I have a registered version I find myself using it less and less and prefering Netfront over it simply of some of the annoying bugs I mention.
Regards
I agree with smrz completely, and have suffered from the issues outlined, but I'd like to add:
- Opera 8.6 can't handle some pages very well (I'm thinking of the Yahoo pages where you need to log in). It just doesn't render them in any sort of useable fashion.
Having said this, I still use it as my main browser, and find that in combination with PIE, then I can do pretty much everything I want on the web.
Cheers,
Steve.
are there any differences between the beta version and the retail version?

Here a post I wrote on moving cache of Opera on SD card...

Open opera.ini file, go to [User Prefs]. At the end of that paragraph, write that ligne
Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\x with x the folder you choosed for cache on your SD.
For french roms, Storage Card must be replaced by Carte de Stockage
Opera is not perfect, but is largely better than other mobile browers...
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure I will pay for the retail version at this point.
Re: the difference between beta version and latest retail version, I'm sure there are many and would depend on the beta version. Main one that comes to mind is that I understand the retail version has a tabbed browser interface while my old beta version does not.
I wonder if Opera mobile will ever support Java?
opera 8.5/8.6 does not support java & javascript?
what about vbscript?
Where do we copy the opera.dll
I am running a trial version. Have the cracked opera.dll file. Where do I copy this to in order to prevent the 30 days to run up?

Here's an idea: how about *paying* for it? I mean, it's only $24 or about 2% the RRP of an HTC Universal. Don't try to kid yourself that circumventing anti-piracy measures is anything other than stealing. If you use a cracked copy, you are a theif.
I agree I always buy software. I have 50+ apps on my IIs and all are paid for you, shouldn't try and steal money from hard working developers who are trying to make a living.
I am finding Opera 8.60 retail to be AWESOME!
In fact, I ditched the JasJar some months ago and have been using a JAM for some time. I only bought a new JJ cos of Opera on VGA. It's rendering most pages such as my online banking (which PIE cocked up completely), it zooms perfectly, and it's just amazing! If WM5 had come out with a decent broser on day one it would have driven operator ARPU's and internet usage. Now I have google with me wherever I go. I kind of had it on my JAM, but not really with that crappy low res screen.
This is a no brainer app and worth every cent!
Piracy
Nice thinking and have no objection. But if you got something for the first time you simply dont go about splashing money around. It is only fare that I want to make use of it, see & decide. If you check 8.6 is not the latest version it is an old version. By paying I would now be getting v9 (see I checked it and am planning to) but need to see if it is what I need / want.
Stereotyping aint really good. Peace anyway....
PS: Besides doing this kind of stuff is always the best way of learning the logic, structure of how a device works. And that is my main interest in these stuff. Not getting all for free. Thanks for your comments anyway...

I'm using Opera on the trial. 30 days is plenty of time to make your mind up. If you don't really use it enough to make up your mind in that time, then don't buy it. If you do, buy it. $24 really is next to nothing for a product. That wouldn't a decent sandwich, cake and a cup of tea!

They provide a trial for that purpose. If they didn't, I still wouldn't agree. Afterall, I can't try out a holiday before I buy it and if I don't like the terms, I can simple boycott the product.

I'd hardly call it stereotyping. Stereotyping is painting a group with a broad brush and, in doing so, encompassing more than rightfully fit the description. However, calling all pirates theives is not stereotyping as all piracy is theft.

I know I'm on a very high horse here, but I cannot and will not tolerate piracy. It *does* hurt people (developers, distributers, support staff, everyone in the chain and their families) and they only reason why it's not as widely regarded as wrong is because everyone knows they will more than likely get away with it. Steal Opera is no better than stealing a wallet or an item of jewellery or anything else. It's ALL theft.
I'm using an early beta that does not have the 30 day limit.
Am I stealing?
The reason I posted the question is because I am not averse to paying for a good finished product. It seems craigiecraig4 (if I have the name spelled right) would say that Opera 8.6 is a good finished product.
That is the type of opinion I was soliciting.
I think anyone who has a beta version of software on there device have in a way paid for it because they put there device on the line to test the product.

Dude - your articles are GREAT! Going thro many of your past posts now...keep it up!
Hey all. I'm really new to HTC and PCC. I had a Nokia 6682 and new how to tweak it and everything. I'm lost with my Wizard though. Do I install programs and stuff just like a regular computer? What tweaks do you guys recommend I perform? I only use the phone for watching videos, listening to music, taking pics and video and of course talking on the phone. I have a PQI 2gb memory card and I just found out that I should've gotten a SanDisk instead. I read the WIKI, but I'm still kinda lost. Somebody teach the young grasshopper!!!!
PQY, SanDisk, Kingston ... - ... believe me: all of those cards are produced in one and the same factory in China!
About what you should do with your WIZ200: this question you should have asked yourself before buying it! It is a PDA, an organizer, a mobile computer which lets you do stuff on the go while away from your desk - and it has for sure its limits!
The Wizard is not the ideal device for watching videos! A little bit research before buying would have told you that! All through it is possible to watch videos; if it is 'enjoyable' is another question ...
Music:
yes, it plays! But already my SE K800i has a much better sound than the WIZ!
There are some cool games out there for PDA's which really run excellent on the WIZ! You can take a closer look at www.handango.com for that! They have also trial versions available for download!
Tweaks:
Some of them are nice but many produce even some issues on your device! So, be carefully by tweaking your WIZ and always ask yourself if that particular TWEAK is really necessary or of you could even live without that!
Am I able to have pictures and ringtones for certain callers and all that? I fell in love with the touchscreen stuff man. I couldn't help it. Plus I only paid $60 through cingular. I have 30 days to return it. Do you know of any phones that might be of interest and usefulness to me?

Ringtones and pictures for callers is no problem! Just check your contacts list in the phone and you will see it offers much more than nokia's symbian would ever be capable of!
About your second question: I have absolutely no clue what phones would be of interest for you! You might wanna figure that out by yourself? www.gsmarena.com
You da man! One last question though. Is there any way I can put P/W protection on my pictures and videos?

I am sure there is a way with 3rd party software. Maybe some real good FILE EXPLORERS are capable of that!
I just wonder why you need to put a password protection on your pic's? Do you rent your phone or give it to somebody from time to time? Then a better solution would be to work with 2 MiniSD cards: put your personal stuff on one SD and the public stuff on another one ...
SOme things i feel that are needed for new wizards.

^^^ that page lots of good stuff.
But the first thing thatmakes installing programs a breeze. is Cabviaacticesync
What it is. when you download the cab file(program) you want. you right click the cab file with your mouse. and there will be a new menu called cabviaacticesync. click that then folow the steps.
http://www.modaco.com/CABviaActiveSync-FREE-Edition-now-availableand33-t243034.html
Also Omapclock and Omapclock plus. you can download those sepratley. or you can download something called batterystaus that has ompa built in. really nice program. All free. dont overclock over 260. i leave mine at 240.
thats all i have for now.
skype me if you want help. toodeep2360
ALso put all your programs on your sd card. will let your wizard run faster. the only downside. is prgrams will start slower.
Thanks for all of your help. I'm gonna go through all these threads over the weekend. I just really gotta find a P/W program.
You better be carefully with OMAPCLOCK and BATTERYSTATUS! It does not really do any good and lots of people had problems with that! Just search this forum or others online!

I think you would be in a minority there Junner2003 - the majority of people on the forum with omap devices overclock their devices and have no problem - it certainly makes the device alot more responsive.
It makes skype useable, videos smooth etc...
It is very rare to cause any damage through overclocking and most stick around 240mhz.
I find the device fine for watching a movie
Even if I am in the minority - still sticking to my opinion!
I am glad so many people have no issues with it! Research in the web tells me another story! How ever, every1 makes his own choices - and I always try to keep my stuff as original as possible! Others like do change every single bit and byte - multiculti!
Have it your way!

Wrong. Between my 2 8125s and my brothers 2 8125s. overclocked to 240-273 we have no problems running them for a year now.
Yes there has been a few people who thought it was ok to overclock over 260.
and everyone has said not to overclock over 240-260.

I partially agree, I hate the slow stock roms (I think Junner2003 is on one(?)). But i used to use batterystatus and even clocked to 312 permanently for a while. The last version I tried froze my device and my current rom is quicker than anything else anyway.
Running the official German T-Mobile AKU3.3 Rom - performance is quite good - sure: videos are not enjoyable with the 195MHz but it is enough for everything else I do: some office work, internet, email, database, writing some software (and compile it later on a desktop) ... and a bit gaming!
I'm a new user of the SGS and am waiting patiently for my first Android phone to arrive. I have read many, many, many...did I say many post, here and on many other forums alike, concerning the SGS. I have read pros and cons and tips and tricks, but most have been on phones that have been 'Rooted'. I will like to defer from doing such thing(at least not yet) but would rather wait until Samsung releases the official Firmware that will supposedly clear all(most) of the major faults that the SGS has.
Now I would like this to be an official thread that would help those of us, who have a stocked SGS and may or may not be experiencing major lag, to help give tips on how to improve the stock SGS as it is already; for speed, what programs to use etc. It would be very comforting to establish what folks have installed on their phones and any recommendations to getting the best out of their stock SGS as possible, in waiting for the New Update Official Samsung firmware to be release.
So please, offer any advice or tips for tweaks or programs to get, maybe a place to get them if possible, so as to make life a little easier. Thank you.
I received my galaxys exactly a week ago and i immediately jumped onto the Market.
Make sure you have a google(gmail) account, as it connects the accounts.
My best downloads are as follows:
-3g watchdog. keeps an eye on your usage
-Astro . file manager
-Audiomanager. speaks for itself
-facebook
-galactic core free . Epic live wallpaper
-mario live wallpaper . not available on market, google it.
-opera mini- web browser, better than stock
-shake them all- THE BEST LIVE WALLPAPER EVA, moves droids react to accelerometer, sound and light.
-starfield,live wallpaper
-Task Manager. essential task manager for watching all your apps and services.
thats it, just search the market and XDA for other cool apps
Those are some really nice tips. I do appreciate. I also like to concur about the Opera Mini app. I use that on my N95 8gig at the moment and there's nothing that can come close. although, there are a few bugs that I think they kinda left out due to the Andriod fever, which I have apparently gotten Regardless, I am glad they have an android app of that in the market. I assume there is already a Market app on the phone, already, right?
Also. What about apps that you do not ever use? I read about not being able to remove them but is it possible to completely disable them?
The android market is pre-loaded onto the phone. there are many apps that come on the phone that are really useful. There are a couple of apps that you may not use but most of them are really useful.
I dont know that you are able to delete these stock apps but you can change the default apps. For example if chosen as default, Opera Mini opens up ALL web links and is really useful. The Stock browser is excellent but im used to opera as i used it on my Satio previously.
The model i bought was a 16GB version and 2GB is reserved for apps, ive also got a 16GB sd card so im not worried about storage.

BTW all: My first post on the forum so G'day to all.
G'day Mate
As the Dolphin compared to Opera mini?
Just go and try it,its also free from the market. You may still prefer Opera, doesnt matter.Give it a go anyway.
I will when I get my phone. That is why I asked. I do not have my phone yet.
Just a suggestion which hasn't been mentioned yet is to try LauncherPro or ADWLauncher as it makes customizing your home windows much easier. I love being able to customize the info I really want to see. Also spend some time using swype and you won't want to go back.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I tried the Opera mini 5.1.21126 version and I think the tapping response is weaker than the stock browser. I had to tap several times to get a response. Either that or the mini is not calibrated accurately. I've reverted back to the stock browser. I will give Dolphin a go.

Last week when you try to connect you get an error saying "due to high demand the service is unavailable" or something like that. The problem is they released it for iPhone last week and had to pull it from the market because they took all the bandwidth of their servers.
Yeah I am seeing that now. I wonder if it's actually down for good, or just because of the iTard crap. I'm sure that the people at Skyfire would have said something if they where killing off the platform that started their company.
The Skyfire app for the Iphone costs about $3, whereas the one for Windows Mobile is free. My guess is the Iphone users get the priority on the servers. There is no incentive for them to turn it back on for WM users, unless they start charging for the app.

I haddent even thought of that! I was hoping the servers were just overloaded. I looked on their blogs and they mention it hoping to get up sometime soon. I hope they don't shut out WM. I would pay a couple of bucks if it ment I could get it to work.

But it's just too much work to keep supporting it on WM, even if they charge for it, the reason is that there just isn't a huge market on WM, most people have moved onto Android and iPhone.

I still do not think that Skyfire is permanently down, I think it's because of all the iTards rapeing their servers downloading it to fix what Apple won't. Skyfire launched on WinMo, and thats where ALL of their revenue came from in the beginning, so I really doubt that they would just up and quit without an explanation. I am one of the original Skyfire users, and back in the day you had to sign up for the service(albeit free) via SMS, and they still send me a text every now and then with a state of the network kinda thing...

Unfortunately not and probably not for the foreseable future. Everyone is still waiting for NAND Android which appartantly was beleived that a fully working NAND ROM would be released near the end of September. Looks as tho its taking alot longer than they thought it would. However Android seem to be the main focus and not much is known about the development of WP7 on the HD2 apart from somebody has done it but it can't be released yet probably not much is working on it so just keep looking out every week or so as It won't be out anytime soon
why would you want it? it is inferior to WinMo 6.5 in most key areas
1. tethering (while it does support it, most of if not all of the harware is locked so the functionality is not exposed)
2. copy paste (yeah yeah we hear it's coming but it should have been there from the get go)
3. functionality as removable storage is not present nor is it supported by wp7 if you hack it to work (requires a hack on eacj host PC you connect the phone to)
4. UI customizing (WTF were they thinking?)
5. multi tasking for third party apps (they have appearantly reversed decisions on this)
6. BT functionality is limited.
No.

Firstly visit www.htc.com and make sure you're running the latest ROM.
Then install SPB Mobile Shell 3.5, it's available via the MS market place as a free trial.
Also install S2P, it's a great music player which you can direct to monitor specific folders rather than adding every mp3 on your phone. Also re-size or replace your album art to 480x480 as it can take advantage of this.
I've done the above and have a fast, efficient and most importantly, stable Leo.
You can give it a go for no more than what? 30 minutes of your life? Do it next time you're sat on the toilet.

fast stable OS? rally? reports are wp7 is slower at launching apps than it's predcessor....
just because you don't need it does not mean it is not a significant shortcoming
you have issues if you can't use copy and paste (you know something that has been a staple of windows since it's inception over 25 years ago)
no way to change the UI to your liking? YAY! I get the same crappy look as everyone else..
Multitasking is essential unless you love having those long delays in WP7 when launching apps over and over again because you are using an app and you get a ph call.... better hope your developer wrote that app correctly so it saves your state......

Seriously, forget any report or review you read. Play with it yourself. I was VERY skeptical about WP7 and was utterly overwhelmed by it when I had a go with a HD7 recently. Seriously, it really is the smoothest and fastest UI I've ever seen, and it all makes sense when you're actually using it and not just watching a video.

Multitasking is essential unless you love having those long delays in WP7 when launching apps over and over again because you are using an app and you get a ph call.... better hope your developer wrote that app correctly so it saves your state......

That's exactly the point... it's down to the developers to correctly code their apps to save state when required. That means Microsoft have put in place a way to handle multiple applications being used asynchronously.
I cant wait for WP7 to work properly on the HD2 because I really want to start playing the xbox live games on it. But I doubt itll be fast and stable lol, I imagine it will be quite slow and crappy. + very ugly

why would you want it? it is inferior to WinMo 6.5 in most key areas
1. tethering (while it does support it, most of if not all of the harware is locked so the functionality is not exposed)
2. copy paste (yeah yeah we hear it's coming but it should have been there from the get go)
3. functionality as removable storage is not present nor is it supported by wp7 if you hack it to work (requires a hack on eacj host PC you connect the phone to)
4. UI customizing (WTF were they thinking?)
5. multi tasking for third party apps (they have appearantly reversed decisions on this)
6. BT functionality is limited.

7. It will rape your SD card. WP7 actually uses the "secure" in secure digital.

Don't hold your breath for any of those features seen as WP7 has a private key which bonds the hardware and software so i can't see the HD2 ever accessing any of the main features of WP7 (online anyway).

I've posted about it before, I wouldn't say I found it slow, more long winded.
Rather than opening the apps instantly it seemed to want to make a song and dance about everything when really I just wanted to get going.
The HTC hub and weather for instance takes it to the extreme (not recomended for people who suffer travel sickness!)
Ok it's not "go away and make a cuppa" time (or go away and read War and Peace like when a BB reboots), but I did find it frustrating. It may indeed be quicker than on the HD2, but it certainly didn't feel it.
I kept wanting to open task manager to see how many apps were running and slowing it down.

Yeah, I do agree that a lot goes on when you run something. There's always some transition or other taking place, and I can see that this would annoy some people instantly, and everyone else eventually. I didn't dig around looking for any customisation options for the UI, so I don't know if it can be tidied up in any way (like Android's animation options in display settings).
The HTC stuff was way more excessive than just regular apps though. Totally!

Holy crap, that sucks. Time to save up for a HD7 then.
This thread makes good points. I can now say I can wait for WP7.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

If you can jailbreak an iphone something similar will appear for this. I have high hopes for the future of this but probably won't have picked up enough for me to want it until next december when my contract finally ends lol

Think of it like xbox live on the 360 with the hacked firmwares. The chefs can do as much as they like to keep spoofing the phones so users will be able to use Zune, Windows Live, Xbox Live and other cloud services but either way Microsoft are not stupid and will keep putting a stop to it it will be short lived attempts. I would like WP7 on my HD2 myself but you have to be realistic MS have worked on a new OS and they will want to protect their new investment. IF WP7 is ported i'm pretty sure we wont have the online features for long and if anything WP7 on the HD2 will be more of a ZUNE player (offline). Don't compare the iPhone to the HD2 the iPhone is jailbroken to make use of the features it "has" this is a totally different kettle of fish porting an OS then expecting full features.
about the online cloud service, i think it is too early to say it can not be unlocked.
MS always do not want other people to crack the system. but, as you can see, windows 7 has been cracked perfectly.
just give developers more time to do their work. time will come

How is a desktop/Laptop/Netbook/Tablet operating system anything like an OS for a smartphone that is locked to hardware and tied with a private key to the software. I've not said they won't get it running no doubt they will get the OS to run but the key features probally not be something that will be avaliable (online).
