Hey guys i live in New Jersey and im leaving for Miami,FL next week, im just wondering do i have to enable roaming on my phone? also to save myself the aggravation of going through tmobile customer support, would i get charged for long distance calls/texts from miami to NJ? thanks
If you have a regional plan than yes, you will be charged for leaving that region. If not, than your good to go.
If you have a national plan you are not billed for roaming within the continental US.

Simple question which I can't find the answer to on the Telus website:
I live in the Toronto area and am with Telus. I am going to Montreal for a week. Will I have to pay any extra fees if I use my phone there (calls, texts, web surfing, any data usage etc.) ? I'm pretty sure roaming fees only occur outside of Canada but there may be other fees Telus is hiding from me...
Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays
You're actually posting in the wrong forum section!!
But in theory unless you have a canada plan by itself, then yes you will pay for roaming fees, at least that's how it is with rogers, so i don't see why it would be different with the other telcos. Text messages however, should be free within canada, if i'm not mistaken.
I'm with Telus as well. The only extra charges you should see is long distance charges for your calls. As long as your phone is logged into the Telus network which should be the case for most of Canada, then there is no roaming charges for data or voice.
Since a lot of people here will be on Sprint in the US, I thought I would ask here and maybe someone with actual experience could answer.
I am going out of town this weekend and will have very spotty Sprint coverage. I know roaming does work in most of the areas I will be in. However, since my phone constantly checks my e-mail, facebook, and twitter, I want to make sure that I won't come home to a $500 phone bill because I was using data while roaming.
Does Sprint charge for data while roaming?
I called customer service last night and the lady really didn't hold my confidence that she knew what I was talking about... But she told me I would be charged for data roaming.
Since I wasn't confident in her, I called a local store... Unfortunately, the kid sounded like he was really uninterested in answering any questions and also said I would be charged, but he had no idea how much it would be. That didn't make me feel any more confident in his answer either.
Does anyone know for sure?
As long as you're in the united states theres no data roaming charge. I've ridden the subway alot in my area which is only covered by verizon and I have never been charged. But I believe there is a 300MB cap on roaming but with email and facebook it will be hard to go over that in a weekend.
As both a government customer and a personal customer. I have always been told that there is no charges for data roaming, but this could be plan dependent of course
Ok, thanks for the info. Since I will be in non-3g areas, I don't think I will be doing much more than letting my phone sync and since I'll be trying to enjoy the fishing, I'll probably just turn my e-mail down to manually sync anyway. lol
You will not be charged for roaming data in the US.
You will, however, be limited to 1x while off the Sprint network.
Never got billed for any overages in Oklahoma when we were on roaming almost 24/7 for a year. Maybe they went easy on us because we're military and didn't have a choice where we were, but never got any extra billing and DEFINITELY used over 300mb and not just on 1x. Full EV-DO on Pioneer's network.
Hello,
I live in Germany and I'm going on holidays to the USA (California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona) for one month (august to september).
As I can't live without internet I thought of getting some kind of prepaid SIM-card over there with a data plan.
Now I don't have any clue which provider I should chose, where and how to get a prepaid SIM, which offer etc.
What would you recommend me?
I heard that the coverage isn't that good in the US and as I'm planning to go to some outlying places too, I'm aware that I won't have reception all the time. But that's okay.
I just need a SIM to do some calls and to write a few mails or check Facebook from time to time – I guess it'll be around 200mbyte and 1 hour calls for this month.
As I have a European phone (NexusOne) I need a GSM network of course.
Best regards and thanks for your help in advance,
lauslein
If u go to Indonesia, a lot of prepaid GSM & CDMA cards could be chosen here
Interested too, will be going to Arizona next summer.
Basically, I only need data and maybe a bit of texting.
seeing that u have a nexus one,,,which bands does it support? the tmobile or just europe? i suggest tmobile if u want 3g but they dont have data plans
at&t does but no 3g i'm sure
its 20$ on at&t for 100mb of data and 20$ for unlimited texting(sms) even to germany i think
Thanks for your reply!

Good question, I'll have to look this up. But I got it directly from Google (Device Seeding), so I guess it's some kind of an international version
20$ for 100MB sounds fair (even though I pay less for 1GB HSDPA at home) . The trip's going to be expensive anyway, so I'm willing to spend some money on that part, too
So I understand that when you make a call over wifi that you are using your plan minutes (I have no problem with that). My question though is when does it know to pull from your anytime minutes as oppose to your unlimited off peak?
Case in point I have a plan with 500 anytime minutes. After 9pm my calls are free (off peak). Now if I travel from Boston (where I live) to San Diego...my off peak minutes do not kick in until 9pm local San Diego time (again makes sense as I am using the network there).
But lets say I travel to Ireland and decide to make a call using the wifi option....T-mobile will have no way of knowing (I presume) or care for that matter that I am using internet in Ireland to make the call...Also, Ireland is 5 hours ahead of Boston (my home town)so my question is....will they pull minutes from my account based upon what time it is in Boston or when you make a wifi call will they always pull those minutes from your anytime bucket?
Thoughts?

Customer service told me that they go by IP address. If it's an international IP address they claim they will charge international rates. Not sure if it's just a bluff but that seems to be their official response to international wifi calling.
That would be nuts if they were to charge you international rates when you are using a hotspot oversees. Presumably it is costing them nothing for the call to be routed back to the US.

Yeah, and they still charge us a butt-load for a few KB of SMS/MMS, when it should be cheap data. just sayin...
Wifi calling is all billed as domestic. If you call from germany, it shows up as a call originating from the united states. As long as you're on wifi, it's a domestic call. This is direct from t-mobile confirmed through their higher level customer service(the people who actually give out correct information), as well as posted on their website.
Also, I spent 3 days last week in Düsseldorf for work and I returned to no international fees. They don't need to charge international fees because they're not using anyone's towers.
Turn off data. Turn on wifi. Make some calls. Laugh at everyone else's bill. That's what I do.

Could you provide a link for this? I can't find it anywhere (which seems to be the reason for so many posts about this)...
Hey all,
I tried searching, and read through countless pages, but could only really find info about moving from US to Canada.
I have a Roger's GN3. Hoping to use it occasionally while travelling in the US.
Can you let me know what unlocking or other work I'll need to do to the phone.
And what carrier in the US is best supported for 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks,
-Peter

the best overall provider for Canadians residents for short trips down south is probably Roam Mobility (http://www.roammobility.com/talk-text-data).
for 3.95 per day (the smallest plan for 1 day), you are getting unlimited calls and text to US and Canadian numbers when in the USA and 300MB of data.
With this provider, you have access to 2G/3G T-Mobile's network... probably LTE at some time in the future.
So you only need your device to be sim unlocked and that's it...
I Often travel to the USA and unlike here, you can go to a 7-11 and buy a prepaid sim card with data and minutes. If not, roam mobility is also a good alternative as long as you're in metropolitan areas because their coverage sucks. I drive from Montreal to Florida about twice a year and don't have coverage 80% of the way down except when i come close to big cities. It also becomes quite expensive if you're looking for any service for a trip of over 1 week, easily costing you 50$ - 100$
But, my current alternative of choice is to stick with Rogers. They have a rewards program which basically gives you points for every dollar you spend on your bill and you can then redeem travel packs. I have about 9000 points and for about 6500pts you can have 40 minutes of call time and unlimited texts for 1 month and because its redeemed on points its free. (thats if you're looking for something with no data). You first have to subscribe for the reward program, the good thing is you can use your points for what you want like upgrades, extra data, extra minutes or other perks www.rogersfirstrewards.rogers.com
Roam Mobility is 27,95 for a week... Unlimited talk and text +2GB of data. You have 2G coverage nearly everywhere (at least on the highway between Montreal and Miami... And 3G in big cities.
It beats anything that Rogers can offer for the price.
Roam Mobility is easy to refill on the web, in Canadian dollars before leaving Canada. Something not always possible with a US prepaid service.
You can even easily buy your sim card online...

It certainly doesn't beat free! And no, it's not true, roam doesn't have coverage nearly anywhere, i used it last year and it cut out in the long stretches between cities.

You don't have data or inexpensive data with what Rogers is offering... And 40 minutes might be enough for you... But it's not comparable with unlimited.
Also I'm curious... Where did you lost coverage with Roam Mobility on the highway? I've went once to Miami and I regularly go to New York and Boston... And I always have coverage... 3G in the cities and 2G outside.

Dont assume anything. You have no idea what OP needs. Maybe 40 minutes and unlimited text is more than enough.
As for coverage, i mentionned where it cuts off, i cant be more specific as i have not mapped where my phone lost connection but all i can say is that ive been using it for 2 years twice a year and it happends that i stop at truck stops or hotels in small cities or between cities and i couldn't text my family to give them an update when i needed to, had to pop my rogers sim back in and connect to ATT. It was along 95, thats all i can say. I do remember loosing full connection somewhere in NY about 2 hours before border until about 30 minutes from border, it was in the mountainous part of the state.
I don't personally need data and also the big problem with roam is you lose your phone number. It's great if you have no business calls or are expecting phone calls but it's not an option for me anymore to lose my phone number. I rather pay 50$ for a travel plan and keep my line connected
