random data connection prob - Touch HD General

hi guys
when im using my device i will occasionally noticethat the contract internet will fail to connect. a soft reset seems to fix this but its really annoying. im using advanced config and hd tweak to disconnect the data after 2mins - could this be causing it. if i leave it a while it sometimes sorts itself out.
any ideas (sorry about grammer - using touch hd kb)
thanks

Wiggz,
Well, why don't you try to reverse what you changed in Advanced Config and HD Tweak in regards to the connection changes. After that, see what happens?
I can't tell you what is going on, but what I've suggested is probably a good place to start in terms of troubleshooting your issues.
Cheers.

Wolf...cheers for the reply.
It could be one of a million apps I've installed/uninstalled on the device. Prime example: tried to use data connection last night before I went to bed and it failed....soft reset and it worked fine. Obviously the 1/2min data connection idle kill I've got setup would have killed the data connection through the night (as it checked for emails) but it still works this morning.
Weird!

[BUG] Infinite Reboot Loop - Disable HSDPA/HSUPA

I just received my touch HD yesterday and found an annoying bug when I was trying to disable 3G (since I am in the US). Maybe I was going about it wrong, but here is the problem:
* When I disable HSDPA/HSUPA in the connection settings, WinMo will infinitely reboot.
I searched but the only infinite reboot problems I found were related to the colored task bar.
This isn't a huge problem, I just won't disable that anymore, but I thought I would let you know since I didn't see anything about it in the forum. I could have missed it though. If this is a re-post you are welcome to delete it.
That's interesting.... by infinite boot do you mean, it keeps rebooting and not letting you do anything until you do a hard reset? I too am in the states and have disabled that option, and I don't have problem. However, what does happen (and I haven't seen anyone post about this, maybe because they haven't figured out why it's doing it yet), is that the phone reboots when it looses signal (I'm pretty sure of this, as the only time my phone ever reboots itself are in three exact locations, where i get 1 bar max). I'm not sure if this is related to the Data connection either (as I do use one). I'd love to see a discussion => solution on this problem.

YES! I think you have solved my reboot issues!
I also live in the US and on some downtime I was fooling around with my HD and also discovered where I could disable HSDPA/HSUPA and thought since it is not needed and may use resources/power I turned it off. Sadly I started getting reboots during what seemed like weak network connections (1 bar or less). I have a few tweak programs and have changed several settings but didn't know where to begin, and would not have thought about turning HSDPA back on, to figure this one out without hard resetting.
Thanks for your post! I will turn HSDPA back on and hope that solves my problem.
Did you happen to notice if it wanted to do it with low network signals?
Regards,
Gordo
Well, I turned both of them back on, and let you know if it will get rid of the 'random' restarts
Yes, it would infinitely reboot until I hard reset the device.
It would boot most of the way into windows, load up TF3D, then reboot.
I have hard reset about 3 times today, everything worked fine each time until I disabled HSDPA/HSUPA (via Start->Settings->Connections->Advanced Network)
Each time I hard reset, I didn't install any programs, just disabled that setting and... boom infinite reboot. (Everything worked fine until that setting changed. Phone/SMS/...)
EDIT: @Svegetto - For me they weren't 'random' reboots, it was a reboot loop.
My Device
CE OS: 5.2.20757 (Build 20757.1.4.0)
ROM Version: 1.14.405.3 (22273) WWE
Radio: 1.09.25.14
Protocol: 52.49a.25.26U
In case it matters...
I was getting the same thing with a weak signal. I was in a hotel where when I got in the elevator bam, it would reboot. Did it pretty much every time.
I was in another location where I was not getting any signal and it was stuck in that same reboot loop. After noticing it would happen while it was trying to locate a signal I removed the sim card and it would reboot fine. Until now I was leaning toward a hardware problem (that I didn't cause) that may have involved the cellular radio overloading the system during a weak signal when it is throttled at max power output. Good radio signals cause it to throttle back to save power so I was about ready to send it in for repair! I even tried a different sim card, SD card, and battery with no change. Now remembering that I did turn off that HSDPA setting, and have since turned it back on, I will be hopeful that my problems are over!
This site is great!! Thanks guys/gals!

Gordo
Reboots
WOw.. i never thought i would find a thread.. i thought i was the only one. Everytime I get on a plane... and thats a lot... when i arrive at the next airport... searching for signal and then reboot loop... infinite frustrating reboot loop.... solution... take out sim... reboot... clear storage.. insert sim... restore from week old backup...
If this HSDPA thing solves my problem.. i will buy someone a beer.
Well I have just 'tested' the 'random' reboot at one of the spots that it would normally reboot, and no reboot (although I've never experienced the infinite reboot, mine would usually reboot once, than maybe a second time, but I'm confident to say that it was due to the HSDPA/HSUPA setting which is really funny cause for the past 3 months I've been waiting for someone to post a thread on the topic)
But yes, it would seem that even if you're in the states and will never get to use it, leave HSDPA/HSUPA enabled (or if someone feels like doing further testing to find out if it's just HSDPA or HSUPA that causes this issue, or both)
Well done all around!

USA Touch HD Users-Beware!
For what it's worth, turning HSDPA back on totally fixed the reboot problem. It has not happened a single time since doing that.
For anyone doing a thread search to troubleshoot this problem it is under:
Settings - Connections - Advanced Network - HSDPA tab
If you were so inclined, as I was, to turn it off thinking it might save battery life or something, don't do it! Low network signal strength will cause it to reboot.
Regards,
Gordo
Yes re-enabling HSDPA/HSUPA solves the problem. I started a thread on this last week when I first got my HD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3269307#post3269307
And here goes some others with the same problem:

I love this site!!
I've been having the same problem and it makes sense now, everytime I phone would reboot I had almost no service. I don't know why I didn't notice the pattern.

HD Tweak - Touch HD Orange - Problems

After encountering some problems with my non Wi-Fi data connections I finally decided a hard reset was required. After this functionality returned to normal and I began re-installing applications back to my device. After some time the problem reared its ugly head once again. Every time I launched a web browsing program I got messages such as "page cannot be displayed" and the touchflo weather would not update. I would perform a soft reset and the connections would function again but only for a short time. This problem coincided with the re-installation of HD Tweak. Once again i have performed a Hard-Reset and not isntalled HD Tweak. The network issues have 100% disappeared (un-installation of the application does not resolve the issue.) In short the Orange ROM and HD Tweak do not seem to see eye to eye and I would recommend not installing Orange devices.
Many thanks
I have HD Tweak on my Orange handset and have not encounted any problems. Could possibly one of the settings you have set on HD Tweak.
I would have thought that too, but the second time I installed HD Tweak I actually did not change any settings at all. I know it seems implausable. But just it being on my phone seemed to make this problem occur. Without it, it's fine. Bit of a head scratcher...

In short HD Tweak and Orange UK work fine and I would recommend using it to anyone who asks. I use both and have done ever since buying the HD. I've used countless roms and have never experienced any issues like you describe. To me it seems you may have inadvertently disabled GPRS on your phone either through HD tweak or some other application.
Go to No. 6 within HD Tweak i.e. Data (GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA) and see whether or not Orange Internet, WAP etc are disabled or enabled

HD Tweak Data Disconnect not working

Hi all,
I've been using HD Tweak for a little while to disconnect my data connection automatically after a minute and was working for a while but now doesn't seem to be working. Anyone else having this problem?
Thanks,
Ho'okani
I'd noticed it had stopped working for me also. Although I've stopped trying to use it now as it has started giving me device.exe errors upon waking.
Hi Gonna bump this one as I'm getting this also. I've set the auto disconnect in tweak to 1 minute. Whilst i don't sit there staring at it when i switch the phone on i can see the 3g symbol, when i tap on it to switch it off i get a "connected for xxxx" where xxxx is longer than a minute...
Any suggestions would be helpful

I remember when mine stopped working all I had to do was change the setting to disconnect after 5 minutes instead of 1 minute and manually turn off the data connection one or two times and it started working again. Maybe you could mess around with the settings and soft reset...it worked for me.

My phone keeps losing 3G connection!

Hi,
To be clear there is no problem if 3G is running, it doesn't drop.
The problem is that sometimes I unlock the phone and 3G doesn't connect at all.
So I checked:
1- The APN setting are correct.
2- I reinstalled the internet setting automatically.
3- I don't have a task killer.
4- I deleted juiceDefender.
5- The only way to get the 3G back is to restart the phone.
How to solve this? I don't know why does it happen, and if I restart the phone every thing goes back to normal!
* My phone is rooted ..
Thanks ..

I had this same problem, too. I fixed it by reinstalling JuiceDefender, making sure it was disabled and then uninstalling it. I found that if you un installed JD while it was 'active' causes the phone to stuff up the APN somehow.

I made sure JuiceDefender was disabled before I uninstalled it ..
* by the way, I'm also using "optus" .. can they be the problem?

I have completely lost my 3G connection and don't know why! The only thing i did was download an update for Handcent. I have switched off my phone and removed my sim card, etc. but still no 3G. When i enter the APN section my connection reads:
_DISABLED_payandgo.o2.co.uk
I have no idea what could have disabled this but i did delete the _DISABLED_ from the address but still no success.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Scott

Hi! I have just managed to reconnect to 3G having performed the following procedure:
Within the APNs section of mobile network settings press the left hand button with the four squares. This should bring up two options 'New APN' and 'Reset to Default'. As soon as I pressed 'reset to default' my 3G was instantly restored.
Hope this helps others experiencing similar problems.
Kind regards
Scott
Hi,
I managed to reconnect the 3G too! By changing the Network mode to GSM only, then back to GSM/WCDMA ..
But why does it happen in the first place!?

WiFi hangs and drops

Hi
I'm currently having a problem with my S4 that is driving me mad.
Ever since I got the phone I've had a bit of a problem with the WiFi connection. I've flashed a few kernels and some seems to help the problem more than others but it's still there.
What happens is the phone connects to WiFi no problems. Then maybe after a few minutes of use the phone won't give me any data. If I search a Web page it just hangs and then says unable to display web page. I then have to knock the WiFi off and back and and it cures the problem temporarily.
Sometimes the WiFi connection can be fine and last a few hours without hanging. Other times it can last a few minutes. The WiFi icon always remains on the screen and the arrows act as if data is getting processed but nothing ever happens. The odd time it will also kick itself off the WiFi and reconnect.
It's driving me mad having to constantly knock it on and off. I'm missing WhatsApp messages for hours because of it also.
Is it a common problem? If not the phone
is still under warranty so I will have to send it back but then that's me phone less for god knows how long
Any help would be great.

if you are rooted, flash this http://www.adrive.com/public/8DJWtV/WifiFix.zip
its a fix that sorted out my wifi problems
I think you should revert back to the latest stock and reset your modem. There might be some fancy settings in your modem software that need to be turned off. I read that somewhere but can't remember which ones. Just search on here.:cyclops:
Hi guys, sorry I've just seen the replies and thank you for taking the time
I shall have a blast at both your solutions and report back.
Thank you again
Well I tried the WiFi fix but that hasn't cured my problem. Today I will flash to stock rom and then re-root and see if that makes a difference. If not its off for repair under warranty and the old Nokia 8210 will be coming out of retirement for a few days lol

May be a fix?
1) type *#0011#
2) press menu button and select wifi
3) turn off power saving mode
4) restart
Alternative
1) download terminal emulator
2) type ping google.com

Hi jehbrian.
I've never heard of this fix but I'm willing to give it a go (whats the worst that can happen lol).
Done the above and indeed you get to a point where Wifi power saving mode is on. I've knocked it off and will see how I get on in the next couple of days. It does make sense that the power saving mode could be killing the Wifi every now and again.
Thanks for the tip and have a pleasant day :fingers-crossed:
I had tried that one. It spends about 10% more battery.

Does it?
Surely there must be something else that can compensate for this loss if it means the Wifi actually works. GPS? Bluetooth? Screen brightness?
My phone is on my dock so can't verify the loss of battery.

I've never noticed the battery drain... besides, S4's battery life is bad anyway.
