Hello everyone
To cut a long story short my Touch HD fell on the floor (on concrete) screen first and took a beating.
The back cover came out, and so did the stylus and memory card. But amazingly, the screen was fine and the whole phone is fine. Except for the severly scuffed housing around the screen....
Now I want to take the phone to HTC and let them replace the housing (digitizer is fine).
I've sent an email to HTC about it (its my first experience with HTC customer support), but if I have to send the phone to them would I have to remove HardSPL and the touch hd generic ROM, and put on the Orange ROM? (My phone was bought brand new off eBay, and it is Orange however unlocked)
Its obvious that the software on the phone is perfectly fine and this is a hardware issue..
Cheers... typical for me that the most expensive and best looking phone gets damaged! Gggrrr...
I don't even know whether they will repair it for free, as it is obviously your fault (sorry for that).
The HTC support isn't that fair at all, you should read this and/or that.
I just got a reply from HTC, they say its going to cost about £60-£70 considering its not covered under warrentee (which is fair enough since I dropped it)
To be on the safe side I am going to flash the original Orange ROM and remove HardSPL.
yeah.. f***g gravity!!
2 weeks before i received my HD i had the same infortunate lucky. My device crashed over floor. It seems my rigth side screen is a biiit deeper than left but all works fine. It´s really ennoying to live with this permanent afraid that our device fall again..
Fk
Therefore, there's an invention called PDAir aluminum cases. Makes your HD less compact, however, it's the best protection you can get against external impacts. My HD already fell on the floor thrice, pure accidents with quite scary distances to the floor, but luckily nothing happened.
I'm using a leather case from the supplier called noreve, www.noreve.com, this is the best leather case that i came across till now. but again as what Georgeous said, it will become less compact..... so its your call to choose , cosmetic or protection =)
you can also op for Invisible Shield by Zagg, but it not easy to apply to you phone thoui, i tried to apply some thing similar by Bodyguardz, i faileed.. now i'm back to Noreve leather casing

I am so upset, i just got my universal on saturday, i have been enjoying it but i could not use it as a phone because i needed to unlock it. I had the damn thing in my pocket and was on a phone call on my other phone in the car, in my front pocket, not back. Got out of the car, walked into the hall and opened it and there it was, A BIG UGLY black gash on the screen, the screen cracked, it just in my pocket!!, closed too! Where can i get this fixed, i am in the states and the phone is not sold here so i don't know here to get it fixed. Please, the LCD liquid has made a dark smere across the left side, i need help, please. Also what is the best case to get, so this does not happen again?
Check Pocket PC Techs. They will replace the screen for you.
how?
Please how do i get to them?
ok
ok, thanks, thats really expensive, ok, what is best case to use for this device?
Broken screen resolution
Ok thank God i don't have to pay over $250 to get my screen fixed. T-mobile Uk agreed to replace it since it was gotten through them. The way this still happened baffels me. I have had my MDA3 for over 6 months and it has fallen about 4 times, and stuff and it still works fine, but the exec screen broke while in my pocket. Strange. My question is that, for people who have an exec, do you leave it in laptop mode or tablet mode most of the time, and have u had to replace yours or do a repair?
Broke my Wizard to, im so damn worried about my universal. Don't got the money over to fix that screen if it's gettin broke, have had almost all pda phones you can get in .se and never cracked any screen but damn qtek ive done it on
I use a krusell case but not because it is the best but because it was the only one available on hand. It cost 29€ here in spain.
Also, I never leave it in tablet mode in my pocket. Always in Laptop mode.
It's only in tablet mode while it's on my desk.
Purchase a metal case. You can keep it in PDA mode and view the screen while inside the case. It also has a belt clip
UD.
Thanks
I pray the second one does not break when it arrives, it is too expensive to fix these things. Can you post a link to the case? i have looked at most of the cases on here, i think i will go with the one for the T-mobile side kick 2, it is cheaper and looks ok. I just need something with a strong belt hook and is well paded, so if it is on my hip and something actually presses on it this time, it will not break.
I must admit , I feel my Unirversal is more vunerable than any other device I have ever owned - can't quit put my finger on why , but I feel as if it wouldn't survive being dropped as well as myXDA, XDAII , s100 , or wizard for that matter !
The XDA / XDAII came with a nice case vertical flip case with a metal plate in the flap - which would be ideal in my eyes , but I have only seen one like that on Ebay for the exec (Via hong kong! ) and I suspect the one you actaully receive may be different (horizontal )
here is the krusell case link:
http://www.krusell.se/product.php?productID=2095&category=7
and here is a metal case link:
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=1355&t_mode=des
hope this helps
I had an XDA 3 and used a metal case. BIG ERROR!
one day the belt clip connector of the case broke and the device fell down, cracking the screen.
For my Mda Pro I ordered one Piel Frama case, which has not only a belt clip but also a fixed belt latch (you can take of original clip and then below) which should not break.
Also this case protects the device from all sides and seems to be thick enough to give it good protection in case of falls.
Details here:

Replies, thank you all for your reply, i think i will go with a leather case, the metal ones are not attractive. The funny thing is that i just sent the phone back today, now it is gone, and as i got home, i got the unlock code from t-mobile UK!!!. DAMN!! I think i just have a bad luck week.
You can get cheap leather case with all sort of design off Ebay. I got mine from there and the quality is not bad at all
Piel Frama does NOT have a belt clip.

@universaldoc
check the link, I posted. I speak about a different Pielframe case. And this one HAS A BELT CLIP.
@BlackICE,
My bad! Thank for you for the correction. I thought you were referring to the standard case.
UD.
Just as an observation, the reason the screen would crack in your pocket would be something sharp hitting it? Could this not be easily solved by always making sure that the side of the HTC with the screen on it always faces towards your leg and not towards the outside? Sounds like an easier option than buying a metal case anyway :?
i usually keep my xda exec in my front pocket ... i'm not really a fan of cases esp. for the htc universals .... somewhat tacky ...
HTC
I had 15 cents in my pocket when it happened but i doubt that had anything to do with, it may have but with the way the coins were, i don't think so. I think maybe cause my knees bent, it stretched my trousers and that caused it (can't stop thinking about that day, ::sob::sob:.
With my MDA3, i always used the case that came with it, i like that, cause the case only holds the device. Thanks for your advice, i just ordered that ALU-Leather yesterday, but i am thinking it will be uncomfortable answering the phone with that leather all around it. I will see how it works out when it gets here but protection is number one now, i can't keep shipping it back to the UK. To people with cases that house the unit, do you answer the phone with the leather all around the unit or u use bluetooth, or you take it out of the case?
Hi guys, when I got my wizard, it had 3 tiny little pin prick sized holes on the middle black section just above the IrDA. Almost like tiny air bubbles that had been popped, it was hardly noticable.
Yesterday I noticed that in this area, some of the black paint had chipped off, at first I thought it was something on my phone so I rubbed it gently and more paint chipped off, it comes off with the gentlest of touches with my nail.
I've taken good care of the phone, it doesn't have a single scratch on it, other than this.
I am not happy, I've dealt with the ridiculous speeds of my phone, the crashing, the complaints that people can't hear me, and now this.
I know it's only a cosmetic defect, but what are my chances of getting it swapped?
I've had the phone 6 weeks.
Cheers
Don't know about swapped.. but at least in NL several users have sent in their Qtek9100 to Qtek.nl's support for the paint coming off of the faceplate buttons, and gotten new faceplates. However, there's also some that are still waiting (20days+) to get their device back... there's -that- to keep in mind as well
Flaky
Until I got my car mount I was jamming mine in my old XDA II mount. This has caused the black paint to flake off big time. However, as the underneath is black too I'm not that bothered. Makes it look kind of lived in.
I have had the exact problem from pretty much the first week I got the device. I have babied it too.
Yep, my paint is flaking off too. The paint on the IE, messaging and soft keys went a long time ago. A little annoying for such an expensive device.
me too.
my IE button's paint is staying but my messaging key's paint is peeling off. also, the paint flaked off from the non-IrDA side, and the Qtek branding peeled off significantly before i cleaned it out completely. the build quality of the outer casing of this device is very questionable.
i can't wait to switch to my next ppcpe, the FS T830.
Wow I guess it's not just me then.
I'll take it back this evening and see what they say, I guess they will initially try to give me the run around.
Cheers for the replies.

same with me, i have a topic on peeled buttons.
used a needle to clean it up, now looks perfect.
I have had some paint troubles on my i-mate K-Jam too...
I bought it at the end of November '05.
Actually it is in for assistance on many small troubles, but if I sum all of them, they are quite annoying:
- stylus not being retained anymore in place
- keyboard not railing correctly to the end on the left side when opening
- keyboard a little bit loosy (when it's closed you can "gently" press is a little bit and it gets at least two millimiters thin, but this is probably due to the fact it felt on the floor once)
- sometimes files stored on the memory card (SanDisk SD 1Gb) are LOST
- paint on the black chassis (both sides) bubbled and came off
The answer I got about paint on the chassis is that "cosmetical" problems are not covered by warranty, but I replied that garantee covers "BAD CONSTRUCTION" problems, beside "functional or cosmetic" and this has to be intended as "BAD CONSTRUCTION", nothing else.
I'll have to pay, but I'll immediately after go to the court for my rights...
I'll try to contact i-mate in the meaningwhile, but actually their website is offline...
I'll keep you informed.
Ciao
any of you guys gonna send the phone for warranty repaire because of this issue?
somebody in NL did and waited 3 weeks+ to get the phone back... probably not worth it But at least Qtek NL did state that it was a manufacturing error and that they'd take care of it.
Edit: this is regarding the paint chipping off of the buttons; not sure about paint elsewhere / any of the other issues. The loose stylus silo is definitely a known issue; hard to ignore as it's all over the internet
My complain was about the paint which is bubbling and removing from the black sides of the device itself.
This morning (after 3 weeks) I got it back BUT I had to PAY Euro 88,00 for this service as the issue was not recognised as a warranty one...
I did not got the damaged part back (and I don't like this, as it's MINE since I PAID !!!).
This is giving me a lot of PUSH towards climbing the organisation ladder and complaining at every single level, up to my local court...
Just for my reference: if it's a WARRANTY ISSUE, the replaced parts are kept from the service as stated in the warranty document, but if I have to pay for a substitution, don't you think I owe the replaced parts back ?
Just my two cents.

I am thinking of getting a case to protect my Kaiser...
What do you guys think of this HTC Kaiser Body Guardz:
http://www.thepocketsolution.com/PSI-42272.html
I know it is transparent, but it is not clear if it will protect it from falls, etc...I doubt it...
/MN
weird ...
every other variations of the Kaiser ( TYTN II/8925/TILT/Vario III )is out of stock except for the "TILT" is available for ordering ...
http://www.thepocketsolution.com/PSI-42589.html
must be vendor error or NOT YET AVAILABLE ( should all be same ... except for the single camera model ) ... I would email & ask ... I think this is just website putting it up way before the device came out ... ( roughly within the last 2 weeks, if you covering all the variations coming to be reality. )
curious ... on one of the demo video ... they had the iPhone protected right over that touchscreen ... I got to thinking ...
if their measurement are top notch ... hopefully the one for the Kaiser does the covering for the screen too !!
we can skip the screen protector altogether ( its thickness replacing the screen protector's thickness ) ... LOL
those thing dries to an invisible result !! COOL stuffs ... I'll be ordering one for sure .. plus I'll get a cool case as well. ( because the guardz is mainly for nick & scratches ... not dropping.
The bodyguardz is because my Kaiser deserved the spoiling ... hahahah
this is weird indeed... I just checked a moment - it doesn't update the stock status until you get into the cart...I will shoot them an email?
what non-magnetic flip case would you recommend?
rgds, MN
I like that the back of the Kaiser is "slightly rubberized" it keeps it from slipping around like the old Hermes did. Does this cover feel the same way? I probably wouldn't go for it either way, but, if it is slippery, it takes away a nice feature IMO.
liking the look of the bodyguard thingey! is it tough/ - ie drop proof?
I put something like this on my wife's iPhone and it works great. Well worth the investment and it really cuts down on the fingerprint smudges (the iPhone is flat out impossible to keep smudge free). I used this skin and bought one of the thin ruberized cases, and my 14 month old daughter has knocked it off tables on several occassions with not a scatch or even a blip of the screen. I have to admit for all it's lack of features, that thing is TOUGH and makes a great device for my wife. I also like the peace of mind that the thing can get thrown around her purse to her hearts content right beside that massive key ring and all I have to do is peel that thing off and it will look like new.
I wonder how well it would suit the Kaiser though since it has more moving parts. On the two occasions my daughter has knocked my 8125 off the coffee table, I have cringed. No damage, but on one occasion the battery door got knocked off, thus forcing a soft reset. Even with one of these covers, I am thinking the sliding keyboard and pop off battery cover will make it more prone to injury, even when it is in a decent case.
Bottom line, I'll be making sure my Kaiser is out of reach!!
i've been watching that site for 3 weeks now waiting for them to get the skins in stock. well, my order went through without a problem
give us a feedback when u get it dude
traveling on business all week, but will follow up when i return next weekend.

As i've mentioned earlier about the iPhone howto video ...
Could you tell me how good the touch sensitive screen reponses when it have the "bodyguardz" covered ??
note: ... only certain kit(s) goes this way of "covering the whole screen" ... if it works well ... I hope the TyTN II kit do the same ...
thickness is similar to a screen protection I guess ... there's one video for the MACBOOK and it does the "covering of the mouse's touchpad" as well ... so I guess it works really well then.
YOUTUBE howto vids ... all sorts

ok guys (and any girls) i just applied the BodyGuardz to my Kaiser and took a few pics before hitting the road... I've included 10 pics in the attached zip file. they're not the best pics, but hopefully they give you some perspective on fit, look, etc. keep in mind that it takes 24 hours for the bubbles to disappear. the pics were taken about 3 hours after application so you'll see some bubbles here and there. by the way, you get 2 sets of skins and 3 screen protectors with the kit. each set includes a skin for the left and right sides, one for the top, one for the back and one for the front. the left side skin also covers the bottom of the phone. so far I'm pleased. i like the somewhat tacky-feel and now i know my phone will be protected from scratches when in my pocket. overall this is a pretty good value.
InvisibleSHIELD
Would anyone else be likely to purchase a screen and phone body protective case from ShieldZone if they have one available?
I have used these on many of my gadgets and they are the best around (IMHO)
I just emailed them to see if one is in the works and will post back with their reply when I recieve it.

I too think they make the best protection for our devices. I've used them on my previous Wizard and Hermes and loved them. The problem I see with putting them on the Kaiser/Tilt is that there's really not much real estate to cover. There's the screen (of course), but that's about it. I personally wouldn't want to cover the back because I like the grip I can get from it. The sides are "ridged", and can't be covered. And the rest of the face is just too small to cover.
But they're really good about making custom shields if you bring in your device to them and it's only like $10 more than their usual charge. But once they make a template, no more custom build fees.
I bought the invisibleshield for my 8125 many years ago. It was a big waste of money. I hated it.
i too had reservations about using a "skin" to protect my Kaiser. i just recently applied the BodyGuardz to my device and as of know, i think i'll continue to use them. this is a link to some pictures (some good, some not so good) in case anyone's interested to see how it turn out.
i had this for my wizard. I love how friendly customer service was. If for some reason, you screw up your cover, which is pretty hard to do, then you can ask them to ship you another one paying for shipping as long as you register.
Only complaint is that it's a little too thick. Didn't feel good with the stylus. But at least I was confident that my screen wasn't going to get damaged.
bloody hell i can hardly see it!
it looks so thin!
are you sure it will protect it?

yes, it's thin and it covers a significant portion of the device. durability is good at the moment...time will tell how well it protects the device.
Does anyone now if there will be any traces left when you remove the "bodyguardz"?

I am pretty sure it will unless it covers 100% of the back. I kept my protection film on the battery cover for 2 days of use, when i took it off, there was a very noticeable trace from where it was.
Thought id make a post to let anyone thinking of getting a PDair aluminium case for the Vario IV (UK) know about my experience with it.
I Recieved my vario just over a week ago and untill this morning i have kept it completely unblemished.
My black aluminium case arrived through the post this morning and upon inspection seemed to be just what i was looking for. the neoprene within the lower part of the case seemed to hold the phone snugly and the catch was firm, ensuring the case wouldnt open accidently and drop my phone. the one thing i did notice was the lack of neoprene on the upper part of the case (read lid), but after looking at a few pictures on the web and vids on youtube i noticed that this was standard on the case and not an error with mine personally.
So i continued to use it sucessfully, flipping the case open to slide the screen and use my keyboard, untill this evening after about 8 hrs of usage i noticed three deep scratches froming on the side of the screen part of the phone near the volume buttons. however on the lower part of the screen part of the phone, above the usb port a particularly nasty scratch has formed measuring 2cm in length. needless to say I am not happy, as the case i bought to protect my phone has caused this much damage.
I have emailed the supplier, hopefully it may be a fault with my case and that a replacement may work fine, but eitherway i felt it was worthwile reporting this to the community incase it saves someone else from getting their phone wrecked.
BTW anyone know of a way of polishing out the scratches i now have?
the only way i know of is to use an extremely high grit sandpaper or use a buffer.
I also got the PDAir Case and mine has got neoprene in the lid as well! I use it for 2 weeks now and no scratches on my phone.
But I have to admit that I don't use the clip provided with the case but carry it arround in this case: HTC Pouch Case
where did you get your aluminium case? i checked the pdair website and it states the tmobile vario IV case as "coming soon".
As an update, after i fired off a rude email to the store i bought the case from they said that the case i recieved was the wrong one and that the one for the tmobile vario IV isnt out yet, so i sent it back to them and recieved a full refund, which would be fine except the scratches i now have as a momento of that shop.
Think ill buy the case directly from pdair in the states and get it shipped over when they are out, save on alot of trouble
I got mine from ebay. But there are several other shops selling "PDAir" Cases that all look some different... Maybe mine is a fake - a good one ;-)
Hi all!
A couple of weeks ago, my phone slipped from my laps. I was sitting in a couch and tried to reach the table with the phone resting outside my pants and the inclination of the body made it slip to the floor, hitting it on the side (left side if I remember well) and a bit inclined like this: /_ (the / is the phone and the _ is the floor ). The fall heigth was very low, like 40 cms.
The external glass break in a single line and the touch sensor doesn't work higher than that line
The weird thing is that the glass didn't broke directly when hitting the ground, it broke less than one minute later while using it (checking if it worked correctly). I sensed it in the hand while using the screen, so it seems that the glass got weakened and broke after a ver small amount of pressure.
In the store where I took it to be repaired they told me that Sony tends to put the touch sensor very close to the glass to improve the sensivity, making it very typical to break when the glass breaks like this.
I'm writing this to encourage you all to buy a case, because altough I don't like cases, I was planning to buy it just after the new year because the phone is too slippy, and it broke before that
I'm attaching a picture of the phone.
P.S: Remember that if the touch sensor breaks, you can always plug a USB mouse using a USB OTG adapter and reboot the phone, and at least you will be able to save everything
So pretty fragile it seems..
I can't remember how many times I dropped my sg note 4, and after every drop I was sure I'll buy a case (well I did) but the point is, now I realize how durable was this device...
My z5p is with front/back glass protectors + ugly tpu alum like case.. (Seems Sony and all case manufacturers can't find out how badly this device needs a pretty nexus 4 like boarder bumper)
Sorry to hear that, but as you say, your cautionary tale proves the benefits of having Tempered Glass screen protectors and a case. Not sure if the Tempered Glass would be good in that situation since your phone impacted at a sideways angle but always good to have fitted, just in case.
I typically always buy Glass screen protectors and wallet cases, the case serves a purpose and also adds some extra protection.

Today it happened to me as well unfortunately. The phone slipped from my grip as I entered in my car. Just like yours, a line appeared and it ****ed up the touch sensor. Have you changed your display after that? If so, did you use the Sony service or some random repair shop?

Hi!
Yesterday I forgot to answer, sorry.
I took it to the store where I bought it, which takes all the Z series directly to Sony official service because they do not have the ability to fix them.
It costs 200€ :s, but I wanted an official repair because it is still under warranty, and as it happened at Christmas and the phone was very new in the market, there were no other alternatives than taking it to the official service. The store didn't even have a pre-calculated price for this model, just up to Z3.
At least, as the accident happened in a friends house, his assurance company finally paid for the repair
