Will be able to use wm7 with the wing?
probably not
it's gonna require more resources than wm6/6.1. also, because theres no accelerometer or a good camera, all the really fun stuff won't work
whoa, whoa. accelerometer? why is that in a phone? i guess like the iphone? wow, i need some information on wm7, where can i find such information?

WM7 isn't coming out till 2009 anyways, so i woudn't worry about running it on a Wing, casue by then you(and the rest of us) will probably have brought a new phone already. And even if you did preserve your Wing till then, it will most likely, not be able to handle WM7. The newer phones, like Xpera, Raphael or Diamond are already putting the Wing and Kaiser to shame. Things like a lack of VGA or higher resolution screen, lack of huge RAM capacity, lack of powerfull procceser, lack of an accelerometer are just some of the things that make the wing incompatible with the Diamond interface itself, let alone WM7.

Yes accelerometer is "like the iPhone". An accelerometer lets you phone detect motion to allow motion sensitive features. HTC's newest phones(Diamond and Raphael) including this feature and so does Xperia.
and from what i hear, the kaiser isn't that hard to "put to shame"
in fact, except for the increase in ram, i'm told they act just like 200mhz OMAPs

not completely ture, the Kaiser features a 400mhz proccesor and twice the RAM so it should be,in theory, twice as fast as the wing. Plus it has 3G, GPS, increased ROM etc. etc....
im with you. wm7 definitively will require a powerful device
there are always hardware mods.
it shouldnt be that hard to add an accelerometer to the Wing. i know its not impossible.
it should also be possibible to replace the camera and screen with a better quality one.
it all comes down to this:
if you want wm 7 on your wing, your gonna have to hardware mod it (if you even still have a wing by 09')
im planning on getting another Wing. This means i will have a spare. I will hardware mod the damn thing myself if i have to.

might as well, just buy a new phone...............hardware modding isn't as easy as flashing a ROM, HTC spends months engineering their phones, it's not as easy as you make it seem to add custom features to them.
i read that wm7 will actually use the camera instead of accelerometers. i seems like it won't work when the phone is facing something that is a solid color. oh well, i'm sure they'll get it
HW modding isnt that easy, or anyone could "mod" their hardwares
(i will mod my Herald to run Windows XP Embedded)
i would mod mine to run symbian just for the heck of it. i mean, why not?
WM 6.1 on tmobile wing
question can i install windows mobile 6.1 on my tmobile wing? and how can i get it???

go to the Herald, forum and look for instructions to flashing a Custom ROM. Then go to the Herald ROM Development section and pick a ROM, all the new ones are WM6.1. I personally use and reccomend ItsPapablackdiamond by pappamos.

T-Mobile and HTC didn't even give us WM 6.1, which are devices are perfect with, the geniuses at XDA forums had to get it themselves, and our phones aren't even gonna be compatible with WM7, forget about getting it from official sorces. And by the way, the idea of using your camera as a motion detector has existed for a while and it was ruled out beacuase, it would require ridiculous battery, RAM and CPU usage. Besides al the new phones have built-in accelerometers, anyways.
I'd like to know if anybody is interested in a ROM Omnia Style ???
I'm not able to cook and so i'd like to know if any cookers think to make it

HTC has said they're not moving forward in that area, because...
"HTC DOES plan to offer software upgrades that will increase feature functionality, over the air wireless speeds and other enhancements for some of the phones being criticized, but we do not anticipate including any additional support for the video acceleration issues cited in customer complaints. It is important for customers to understand that bringing this functionality to market is not a trivial driver update and requires extensive software development and time.
HTC will utilize hardware video acceleration like the ATI Imageon in many upcoming products. Our users have made it clear that they expect our products to offer an improved visual experience, and we have included this feedback into planning and development of future products." [according to HTC]
i think so,htc had given up to upgrades.
plugins of Omnia is too large.almost 35M,I dont think its useful
actually if you look through that omnia thread there are cabs whoch are small like 9mb that is what I am running and it works great except for the mplayer which they are still working on. The 3D drivers....I was talking about in this forum udk is working on it I do beleive.
ol,seems that i make a mistake.
hope 3d drivers coming soon.
Long post - To help you understand where I am coming from and my situation to better assess what I'm looking for
I've read pretty much all the stickies, and the newbie section regarding questions but I didn't really get answers. Though I did learn a lot, but I'm still a little confused. I find some threads messy, in terms of instructions, and descriptions. Not forgetting the existance of compilation threads. Of course, kudos to everyone here for making awesome apps and roms.
I'm a student from Singapore, and I finally got my dream phone, which is the X1, my first smartphone, from a friend. Barely a few months old and still under warranty. So I'm pretty much a newbie in terms of smartphones, firmware, apps and all that. Been using it for about a month now, got a few minor scratches from wear and tear so it's no biggy, but the keyboards a lil faded, peeled. I'm not sure how to describe it, some letters are just a blob without the 'paint' on to denote it, and the slide-up screen's a little loose.
I started off getting apps like PockeTwit for Twittering to play around. Then I stumbled upon XDA forums. I started off 'boosting' my phone's capabilities with TuneUp, XperiaTweak, VModeSwitch, SKTools, R3A Camera Update, SRS WOW sound thingy. Probably the same way you would do to a PC with certain OC programs and whatnot. Then I installed that Manilla program thing, and now my UI's pretty much like a HTC. Which is awesome might I add. A little laggy, may not be perfect, but it's still great. Thereafter I found out about firmware, WinMo 6.5, issues with it, custom ROMs. Read about how to flash, break it down before flashing custom ROMs into it, which is easy actually. I'm deciding between the Touch-It ROM and the SE-X1 xPERT one because it already has all the goodies in it. More inclined to Barebone one even, then later installing the goodies I want.
I'm looking for one that would look great, with minimal lag, with all the goodies to help me keep it in check and upgrades. (I do understand that there will definitely be a little lag in smartphones due to it's hardware and how we upkeep them as owners.)
Here comes the questions.
1. I would like to change the keyboard to a new one and tighten the sliding-screen. Would SE do that? And would it be free due to warranty?
2. If I were to flash a custom ROM in, would it void my warranty? (Assuming I do it before sending it to SE to fix above problems)
3. Which ROM should I get? I like the goodies that come in the xPERT ROM, but I also like the HTC UI from the Touch-IT ROM. Is there a way to maybe integrate the two? (I'm assuming it would lag less if the UI was integrated into the ROM rather than having it as a seperate installation like I have now)
4. Which would be after the first three are settled, is with games. I've seen the phone's capabilities and what not around, with emulators for the PS1, fullscreen games like Palm Heroes, PDiablo and all that. I've tried them all but I just can't seem to get them all to work, am I doing something wrong?
5. Panels, the whole point of the X1 would be its panels. But I just can't seem to find any. I've searched google, lists, pretty much everywhere. All I see are the official released ones from SE. The most I found, being custom, was the Youtube panel which I got to work. Is there really a lot of panels out there?
[Edit - More questions in Post #5]
That's all the questions I can remember for now, it's pretty late. I'll put up more in the thread or post if I can remember.
Thanks in advance!

1) Just ask Sony Ericsson
2) You can send it back unless you flash to any of the Official Roms and you have to flash the default spl so they don't find out that you flashed your phone.
3) I don't get your questions. If you install a ROM that has Touch Flo 3D then of course you get Touch Flo 3D (aka manilla 3d)... therefore you can delete the the Touch Flo 3D cabs...
4) Xperia sucks with games... btw what is Pdiablo? Link please?

Will be asking first thing in the morning regarding that. Just wondering if anyone had the same idea and probably got it fixed.
Regarding 2, if they'll fix it, I'll just wait till I get it back before flashing the ROMs then.
Sorry about the mix up with question 3, what I meant was, in regards to what I expecting from the X1, what I wrote in my first post. I like how the Manila UI looks and feels. But I'd like to have all the goodies or upgrades that are included in the other ROM.
So would it be ideal to flash the xPERT ROM and then installing the Manila UI? Or flashing the Touch-IT ROM and install all the other goodies and upgrades thereafter. Which would have minimal lag as a result, more space etc.
Hope I cleared it up.
PDiablo is a port of Diablo 1 to smartphones or PPCs (Whichever is the term), I read somewhere that it works fine on the X1. Here's the link.

Games are not an issue for me, since I have the PC and my PSP for it. I'm happy enough just to have the X1 as a phone, with apps and goodies.
For a properly working TF3D, you need it flashed into the ROM. Even then it'll be a tad slow at times (TF3D was coded horribly), but it'll be loads better than installed through CAB.
Which goodies in the other ROM do you want? Most can be installed anyway.

Clarified my thoughts in terms of programming, about flashing > CAB installation. Thank you.
Program wise, preferably those I listed, like the R3A goodies from xPERT ROM, TuneUp, XperiaTweak, VModeSwitch, SKTools, SRS WOW HD I guess. Which I'm assuming shouldn't raise any problems in regards to clashes and whatnot.
I understand the SE-X1 ROMs come with WinMo 6.5, does the Touch-IT ROM come with 6.5 or is it just 6.1?
Is there also a way to increase the volume beyond the given maximum on the X1? Sometimes I can be pretty deaf and miss calls or alarms due to that.
A seperate question. Is there a way to show upcoming appointments beyond the current day and/or the Calendar button on the Home tab in Manila?
You say - "a truckload of question"
I say - Bring them on !!!!!!!!!
Some of them were answered so here are my two cents.
3 - I am using the Generic R3A UK ROM. I find it pretty stable and decently fast. All the tweaks and apps can be done separately, so I don't need a custom ROM. By the way - you can find almost every app or tweak in a cab file.
4 - There are many games that can be played by the X1, but a few made for it . Just search the forum for topics about games. Like this one that I posted (sorry for the shameless self promotion) -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=522761&highlight=games+X1
Most of the problems are caused by the resolution of the games. Not many of them are in WVGA resolution. You need this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442426
5 - There are probably a dozen or less custom panels. Panels development = FAIL.
I dislike TF3D, so I can't help you there .

Thank you for your reply and input. I've seen your thread about games and I find it highly useful. I'll be sure to refer to that if I intend to get more games.
Will also look at standard Generic ROMs since you brought that into light. Never really looked into that.
Currently playing with theChanner program now, watching the telly on the X1.
As with games, not really bothered with panels, just find it rather funny how a strong released concept like that would be so under-developed. Guess it'll take time.
Thanks again.

No, shouldn't be a problem at all. All those things are available in CAB format. SRS WOW HD doesn't work properly on the X1 though, so I don't know what that chef did.

Touch-IT has a WM 6.1 variant (10.3) and a WM6.5 one. The WM6.5 one is pretty old though, and if you use TF3D, having WM6.5 isn't that big a bonus.

Although a possibility, do keep in mind that Generic roms might lack some tweaks that you require for some things to work properly. I'd recommend a stripped down and tweaked ROM instead of generic. Often chefs make these as well, since it's the first thing they do before adding in new stuff.

It won't take time, it'll take a miracle. The X1 has been released more than eight months ago. The peak interest in the device has come and gone, panels have failed.

Why on earth would you want to do that? You have to be kidding - right?
We should be going fowards...
not backwards
believe me you DONT want wm on your hero......
There I was, thinking that I made a giant leap here and not a step backwards hehe. WM, no thanks
As good as windows mobile is, I got the Hero because of Android,
Why don't you just get the HTC Diamond 2, same screen size, smaller form factor, and the option to upgrade to WM 6.5
Would'n it be nice to have the option to switch back and forth from Android to WM?
I'm about to get my Hero in a few days, but just based on curiosity.
I moved back to Htc (Trinity and then HD) after a brief "affair" with an i-phone, I'm curious to seee if HTC got to overcome the MANY i-phone shortcommings.
Sure! new i-phones should be doing better, but the "all-and-only-finger world" of capacitive touchscreens is not ideal for everyone fingers....
Just my opinion.

My English is very bad, I´m from Spain, sorry guys.
I like try how work two proccessors in WM 6.5, how plays video DIVX with 192 mb ram, if TOMTOM is quickly... and then, install Android again. And think if Hero´s hardware was built only for Android, or HTC keep a card, for WM 6.5.
Imaginate that Android not success, ¿What will do HTC with the terminals?
It´s only for investigate. no more. Thanks.

Then it would be an HTC problem and being so, it will be quickly solved.
A different issue is when we, users, are left in the dark...... HTC has proved not to be very responsive, nor MS itself, so you better bet Android will live a long life....

There you have your first problem, since wm 6.1 is totally NOT finger friendly, the hero does have a captive touchscreen, making it useless with a stylus and thus with wm 6.1.
6.5 should be more finger friendly so that one may work on your hero, If you look at the hardware only the hero is almost the same as the diamond 2 so yes you are able to run 6.5 on your hero. Just wait until someone makes a rom with it.
Nut as you surely have noticed, most of the people buy a hero because the android system. So I don't think someone's gonna make it... soon

Yes, I do agree with your opinion, it's "common sense", but still, with the kind of processing power we have -literally- in our hands, it should be nice to have "options", as we do have in the "PC world", so as to be able to try more than one OS, while retaining the design and form factor features we all value at purchasing time.
And yes, touch screens experience is so dependant on the interface, that it makes your point as to 6.1 not being suitable for fingers.
Stilll looking for my "perfect" pda-phone ;-)
Regards.

hi all, is there an app that allows me to read mangas online? sort of like what mango does for the blackberry?
anything anyone? anything at all?
Hi there, Mango developer here. Was googling my app and found this thread, so I just figured I'd mention this: I'm about halfway done with a (albeit watered-down) WinMo port of Mango. It wasn't terribly difficult since Java is very similar to C#, but there are a lot of differences between the .NET Compact Framework and the BlackBerry API so I've hit a couple roadblocks, main one being the pageviewer.
The target platform is PocketPC 2003, so if I can get it to run on my piece of **** 6 year old HP iPaq it'll run on a Rhodium without much complaint, hopefully.
The main problem with the Windows Mobile port is the pageviewer. BlackBerry has support for panning around an image with the touchscreen built in, whereas WinMo (or at least 2003) requires you to manually drag the scrollbars or use the D-Pad on the device. >_> I will try to write a custom imageviewer that allows for scrolling but I don't think it will work all that well.
Also, the only Windows Mobile devices I have are that crappy old iPaq and a Treo 600w, and both of them have very little RAM. I'm worried that Mango's high-res scans won't play nice with those devices' limited memory.
One more thing... the Rhodium (which I am guessing is the device you want to run Mango on) is Windows Mobile right?
Yes, it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The rhodium DOES have touch panning also.

One big problem with Windows Mobile is the fact that it is years and years old, with dozens of versions, from crappy hardware and low resolutions to the newer specs and high-res. The iPhone and Blackberry's don't have this problem because of their 'young' age.
If you're developing for WindowsMobile, I would really recommend not trying to develop for OLD OLD devices like your iPaq. What's the point? Your target audience isn't going to be using such old devices like that, and you're just making your life harder for yourself.
Also, don't make your program rely on a D-Pad, as many newer touchscreen devices don't have one!!
Don't develop for WindowsMobile Smartphones (which don't have touchscreen's) but develop for WindowsMobile PocketPC's (which all have touchscreens). Develop for WindowsMobile 6.0 Pro or 6.1, because WinMo 6.5 is about to come out in a few months, and WinMo 7 within a year.
Don't restrict yourself and make your developing harder. Sorry if I sound like I'm coming on high or hard here, but I'm kinda sick of seeing applications that are so limited because they are trying to cater for decade old software and mobiles. Do what the iPhone does. Make a break and start afresh =)
Good luck!!
If you don't mind reading mangas "offline" there's always Comic Reader Mobi.

You make a very valid point. I haven't used WinMo in a long time so I haven't kept up with anything past version 5, and I didn't know how significant the differences were in versions 6 and 6.1 when compared to the devices I'm used to. (since WinMo pretty much stood still from versions 2002-5.0 I just assumed things were the same as ever. hurray for competition getting Microsoft of their asses!)
Though I don't have any 6.0-compatible devices to test on, I will bump up my target platform to 6.0 with .NETCF 3.5 and rely on the emulators. You're right, it really is just a bad headache to write apps for six year old devices with 15 megs of app memory, thanks for opening my eyes heh.
any eta available for the winmo version? i'd be more than willing to help test it =]
hi
if you need a hand with the c# on windows mobile let me know.
I work a lot with it and I think I know this thing pretty well now.
Even if i am pretty busy i probably can save you a lot of time.
pm me if you need
Me again, sorry for the month-old gravedig. I haven't been working on Mango WinMo recently but I've started writing it again for WM6/.NET3.5. Hopefully I'll have a usable version out soon, but no promises. I've also decided to get a TP2 to replace my stolen BlackBerry Storm so maybe that'll give me some incentive to code faster.
Also, if anyone knows of any UI libraries I can use to spruce up the buttons and controls, that would be great. WinMo suuuure is ugly >_>
Well, supposedly the new 6.5 provides for a nicer UI and buttons.
I look forward to your app and I hope you enjoy your new TP2

Really nice of you to bump this thread =)
Here's one TP2-user, who is really waiting for this app. I'm a bit tired to drag around two devices; PSP with custom firmware to read manga and TP2 for everything else.
Much kudos for ya ^^
And for the UI, I hope that upcoming official (if you hesitate to use custom ROMs) 6.5 update for TP2 will spruce things up for you to more liking
