I have Garmin Mobile XT residing on my 16GB memory card, but after the firmware upgrade to R3A it no longer wanted to display any maps. Said there were none. I tried some tricks but finally gave up and wanted to reinstall it. Due to the size of the maps (files 1.5GB or so) I decided to take the memory card out of the phone, place it in a SD card adapter and put it in my PC which has a SD card reader. However, Windows XP now suddenly doesn't recognize my memory card and suggests I format it. This may be a solution, but it seems something "simple to fix" must have happened here. It used to work fine in XP. I know SD cards can behave strange sometimes and that there are recovery programs for various cameras with SD cards. Any ideas?
I have this problem with Windows Vista whenever I use my microSD adapter. What I tend to do is try to update the driver for the "Unknown UBS Adapter". It normally comes back after a search saying that I have the up to date one, then I take out the USB adapter, put it back in, and it works.
Maybe a similar method might work for you.
It's a SDHC card. Not compatible with normal SD Slot.
did you maybe have the old sd card set to be encrypted or something like that - not sure though

Yes, it's a SDHC card and it is fully compatible with a normal SD slot (ofcourse you need an adapter inbetween) and it used to work like a charm in Windows XP; i.e. I could put the SDHC card from the X1 in the adapter and put the adapter in the computer and be able to access the content on the SDHC card just like a normal disk. Very much faster for transferring large data, for instance Garmin maps, than using the USB cable.

No encryption used. And the write protect thing on the adapter is set to off. After some more poking around I found that Windows XP reports the file format on th SDHC card as RAW and is not even able to format the card. I used a third party app that I installed on the X1 to format the card, which works fine. (Funny that there is no built in function for this in Windows Mobile). With the formatted SDHC card I can now work with it like before in Windows XP. Ofcourse, all data on it were lost.
Does anyone here know what can cause the formatting of the SDHC card to change into something else (RAW) than it was first formatted to (FAT32)? Something must have messed up the file allocation tables? Although the card worked in the X1, Windows Mobile reported that there were about 3MB space available on it while in reality there were more than 6GB available on it.
Puzzled. But then again this is Windows...
Everything is Windows fault
Do you have an SDHC Vista driver for your card reader?
Did you somehow trash the card (it's possible)?
Just because you have an adapter doesn't make SDHC compatible with SD. The reader must also be capable of SDHC as well as drivers.
You can always put the X1 into card reader mode.

Yes, ofcourse it is... =)) No, I do not have a SDHC Vista driver since I run Windows XP. I don't know if I trashed the card somehow, if I did it certainly wasn't intentional and it would certainly mean that the card has serious quality issues (it's a SanDisk card).
I did find out however, that formatting the card in Windows Mobile (with a 3rd party app) only makes it possible to read the card in Windows XP. Unless you format it again in Windows XP the same problem will occur again (i.e. format turns to RAW and makes it impossible to read in Windows XP again).

Sorry, newbie so sorry if answerd else where
xda II running fine, put in my new kingston 528meg SD card, seems ok. ran xbackup for first time and is slow so left it to run overnight. woke up message says done ok. BUT now xda can't see storage card at all!! :?
tried reset, same. tried 32meg SD card out of wifes Nokia: sees that fine. cant try kingston SD in Nokia cos its a different physical size
Any ideas? or can you reformat these SD cards in the xda?
Thanks
if pocket mechanics cant formet it because it cant see the card then
a sd reader for the pc they are only like 10$ would most likely see it
or you could try and see if your wife's phone could format it
or another device which use SD cards like a camera
just tried CNetX flashformat but it cant see the card damm why are SD cards different sizes ( wont fit in wifes nokia and camera is Compact flash memory) arrgggggg
are you sure that the nokia use sd?
because the nokia's i've seen use mmc flash which look just like sd but thinner and sd devices can use mmc but not the other way around
did you try pocket mechanics?
doh my mistake yup the nokia 6230 is mmc
tried pocket mechanics to no avail. mate popping round with his xda ii in a mo so i can try his card and vice versa. hes going to take my card and try and format it with his pc which has a built in reader
ill keep you posted
UPDATE
Card is dead! tried it in mates xda ii and his pc and it can't be seen. off to post it back to China! ( ebay rules )
xBackup isn't what killed your card - it was the XDA itself.
I have destroyed a 1GB Toshiba, and a 512MB Toshiba so far.
My 256MB Kingston has been fine.
...
Put the card to a card-reader/writer(on a PC) and try to check it for errors(Scandisk/Chkdsk). If it doesn't help, try to format the card with standard FAT32 filesystem... My experience is,that the filesystem can be injured the same way as a floppy when you remove it(cut-off data transfer) before is any file not closed for write yet. I loosed once all my important data from SD. The /Storage is the most secure place for my important documents, that I know.
Hey guys,
I have a 2 GB mini SD that was acting up, so I went to format it and everything went smoothly until I realized that my card reader only supported 1 GB cards.
So now I have half of my card sitting around being wasted.
What card readers/work arounds do you guys use? Any generic drivers I could use to enable 2 gb fuctions from my reader?
Can't you just transfer items through your Wizard?
--edit--
Nvm, reread your post ^^;;
Anyway, what brand 2gb is it?
Yes, tell us the brand of card and the card reader. I thought most modern card readers would be capable of reading 2, 4 or even greater size cards.
Although it may be cheaper just to get a new card reader, try the attached utililty first.
My brand new Belkin Media Reader wouldn't read a 2GB card, but a cheapo 6-in1 media reader from Jessps (UK store) works fine.
Try using Pocket Mechanic on the Wizard, or pick up a Iogear GFR201SDM (a usb thumb drive you can stick a MiniSD card into) at your local CompUSA -- it'll set you back about $10.00.
http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/
This program allows you to swith between activesync mode and card export mode. When in card export and you plug your device into a pc via usb it detects it as a "USB Mass Storage". So it makes your wizard's storage card like one of those USB Jumpdisks. Thats what i used last a couple of days ago when my card got corrupted and had to reformat.
I tried this software but in the windows device manager , the USB mass storage device appears with a "!" ... in the device detais an error message appears "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" ... have any idea about this ???
how can i reformat my minisd card? I have a card reader built into my laptop, but that won't reformat it. Is there any good free software I could use to reformat it?
I have used my card reader in my dell monitor several times to reformat my miniSD cards for both my MPx220 and my 8125.
is there any other way, because mine doesnt reformat it.
I use WM5Storage on my K-Jam which lets your SD card act as an external storage device on a seperate Drive on your pc. I simply use my Pc's format option on the drive to clean it all out or defragement.
Cheers mate.

You mention about not able to reformat the card using card reader, but can't it be reformated using your device, from the PDA itself?
You can format the miniSD on the Wizard by grabbing a copy of Pocket Mechanic from Handango; IIRC the demo version will format.
Does your card reader not read the card at all, or is it just not capable of formatting? If the former, you might consider picking up an IOGear USB card reader -- it's basically a USB thumb drive that you can stick your miniSD into. In the states, CompUSA has them for $10; cheaper than buying Pocket Mechanic.
pocket mechanic did the trick! thanks! just curious..i shouldve reformatted in FAT16 right? im assuming so since my card is working properly
Either FAT16 or FAT32 should work; I prefer FAT32.
whats the difference between FAT16 and FAT32
For one thing, FAT16 volumes are limited to 2GB in size, whereas FAT32 can go up to 2TB. Also FAT32 usually results in less wasted space. Check out the FAT32 Resource Page for more info.
Couldn't Use mini SD after PC format.
Hi,
I'm using MDA Vario. I bought 2 Gig storage card. At the first time, my MDA was able to recognize my 2 Gig mini SD. Then I put the card on the card reader on my Laptop in order to copy some file. There was a comment on the dialogue box in my laptop that my 2 Gig mini SD has not been formated and the dialog box offered me to format it. Then I clicked yes to proceed the formatting process. By the end of the formatting process, the dialouge box on my laptop stated that my mini SD has 4 Gig total capacity and 2 Gig in bad sector.
Unfortunatelly, after I formated my 2 Gig mini SD using my laptop; My 2 Gig mini SD could not be recognized by my MDA, but my laptop is still able to recognize my 2 Gig mini SD card.
Up to the present I have not been able to use my 2 Gig mini SD on my Wizard since I format it using my Laptop.
I also has formated my 128MB and 256MB mini SD cards using the same laptop and it works on my MDA.
I tried to use Pocket mechanic, but it didn't recognise my mini SD.
Could you please help me to fix the problem?
regards,
Stones
so im excited to get a 8gb card for my kaiser,so i pop it in and reset...goto memory>storage card NOTHING!pop it out put it in my pc and invalid process!!!WTF?!?!?!help please
Have you tried to format the card from your PC. If that doesn't work you might have a bad card. Sucks but it does happen sometimes.
Also, please remember that these portable handsets are usually not NTFS file format compatible. Be sure when you are formatting that the card is in FAT or FAT32 mode, with default block sizes and allocation.
Also, it does sound to me that your card is defective. I have never had to "format" any flash cards I have ever bought before using them, except a couple old CF cards for my SLR camera.
I got a sandisk 8gb microsdhc myself - and it works great...
(except when one morning I wake up and find out that all the data's gone, and had to recover it with GetDataBack)
I'm no SDHC expert (I've only had 1 for 2 weeks) but I ran into some problems myself...
1) If you're running Win XP on your desktop, you'll need to download the hotfix for SDHC support here (I don't use Vista so I'm not sure if it supports SDHC natively)
2) The card reader I have connected to my PC wouldn't read SDHC cards but the USB reader that came with my SanDisk 8GB MicroSDHC card does work. Make sure the adapter you're using to connect to the PC supports SDHC.
3) Sounds stupid but make sure you're pushing the card all the way into your phone. You should feel some spring pressure and then hear a 'click' as it locks into place. You push it in and it springs out to remove it. I have pretty big fingers and I didn't insert mine all the way the first time. I still have to use something small (the back end of the stylus) to fully insert my SDHC card.
---OR---
You may have a faulty card
mine work!!

Hey guys, I got my phone and the sd card about 4 months after the WP7 launch. It went smoothly and I enjoy WP OS. My Question/problem is I have multiple card readers and adapters but windows 7 both on my laptop and desktop won't read the card. The card formats into the OS on the phone and works fine but when I get into computer management it just shows H:/ no media. I have tried the windows fix for code 10 and 43 and driver updates, uninstalls, reinstalls of the usb spots in device manager w/o luck. I have two targus media card readers with sd and micro sd slots. windows recognizes card in with the sound both with sd and micro hookd to either reader. I use the adapter also on my laptop with a media card reader in it w/o luck either. I am trying to get it to detect so I can format it to work with my 3ds. Please message me or email [email protected].

I assumed you already read the Samsung Focus wiki on the SD card topic.
Once you put the microsd, it becomes part of the OS and the card [format] becomes unreadable under OS/card readers. Removing it from the phone would result in phone data loss, the phone would ask for the card and not work anymore until you hard reset. So make sure you got all your media backed up before you do this.
Now, if you want the card removed from the phone and used somewhere else, it's kinda tough. Basically, if you search through the forum, you'd see that you need another device to unlock (re-format) the card:
- a Focus with a custom ROM (these have the card unlock utility installed)
- a Nokia symbian N or E series phone (N95, E7x etc) supporting microsd
- a camera (which may see the card and format it - not all brands may work)
