reformat sd card - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

how can i reformat my minisd card? I have a card reader built into my laptop, but that won't reformat it. Is there any good free software I could use to reformat it?

I have used my card reader in my dell monitor several times to reformat my miniSD cards for both my MPx220 and my 8125.

is there any other way, because mine doesnt reformat it.

I use WM5Storage on my K-Jam which lets your SD card act as an external storage device on a seperate Drive on your pc. I simply use my Pc's format option on the drive to clean it all out or defragement.
Cheers mate.

You mention about not able to reformat the card using card reader, but can't it be reformated using your device, from the PDA itself?

You can format the miniSD on the Wizard by grabbing a copy of Pocket Mechanic from Handango; IIRC the demo version will format.
Does your card reader not read the card at all, or is it just not capable of formatting? If the former, you might consider picking up an IOGear USB card reader -- it's basically a USB thumb drive that you can stick your miniSD into. In the states, CompUSA has them for $10; cheaper than buying Pocket Mechanic.

pocket mechanic did the trick! thanks! just curious..i shouldve reformatted in FAT16 right? im assuming so since my card is working properly

Either FAT16 or FAT32 should work; I prefer FAT32.

whats the difference between FAT16 and FAT32

For one thing, FAT16 volumes are limited to 2GB in size, whereas FAT32 can go up to 2TB. Also FAT32 usually results in less wasted space. Check out the FAT32 Resource Page for more info.

Couldn't Use mini SD after PC format.
Hi,
I'm using MDA Vario. I bought 2 Gig storage card. At the first time, my MDA was able to recognize my 2 Gig mini SD. Then I put the card on the card reader on my Laptop in order to copy some file. There was a comment on the dialogue box in my laptop that my 2 Gig mini SD has not been formated and the dialog box offered me to format it. Then I clicked yes to proceed the formatting process. By the end of the formatting process, the dialouge box on my laptop stated that my mini SD has 4 Gig total capacity and 2 Gig in bad sector.
Unfortunatelly, after I formated my 2 Gig mini SD using my laptop; My 2 Gig mini SD could not be recognized by my MDA, but my laptop is still able to recognize my 2 Gig mini SD card.
Up to the present I have not been able to use my 2 Gig mini SD on my Wizard since I format it using my Laptop.
I also has formated my 128MB and 256MB mini SD cards using the same laptop and it works on my MDA.
I tried to use Pocket mechanic, but it didn't recognise my mini SD.
Could you please help me to fix the problem?
regards,
Stones

formatting SD cards

i was wondering what the ideal way is to format an sd ultra II sandisk card. since one i have is completly untracable.. i put files on it and suddenly the are gone and the disk can't be found. i think i formatted it fat32 so i was wondering ....... my fault or sandisk fault?? any advise is welcome
oh and norton said i should low format is, but this could be because it cannot be found ...
Once you have formatted it and installed the programs you should write protect it by using the slider switch. I had a weird situation with a pcmcia memory card, it is a 1 gig card and always worked as 1 gig in my laptop, however when I put it in the pc card adaptor on my pda it saw it as 512 meg, after formatting it I have been unable to get it back to 1 gig even using partition manager on my laptop.
Is your memory card detected in a card reader on your pc? If it cant be seen by the system then it points to a hardware fault.
I have here a Lexar 128 meg sd card, it works great in any other pda and it works on xda2 however the xda1 doesnt see it at all, it seems all memory cards are not born equal.

Storage Card Problems

Hi,
I have a problem in recognizing my Transcend 2 GB SD-Card.
During operation the MDA Pro "looses" my storage card. I do not need to move the MDA. It also happens when it is on the table.
When I eject the card and put it in again it is recognized again.
Do you have a suggestion what this can be?
Mike
****, I just ordered the same card two days ago. Should arrive today or tomorrow. I let you know what happens.
Unless your card is faulty, try reformatting the card (I know you don't usually have to do this staight out of the box). I have had this problem before, but on the i-mate jam and it would read the card in my PC, but not my LapTop, which has a dedicated SD slot. Go figure. Tried formatting to FAT and FAT32, but I think it doesn't make too much of a difference. For me it came down to the type of SD card being used!
My 1GB Scandisk card works flawlessly and quickly wherever I put it, but my 2GB Scandisk SD Ultra II only works in my PC and transfer rate seems noticeably slower. :?
I already formatted the SD-Card. I also tried Low Level Format with
Pocket Mechanic.
I havenĀ“t found failures with a r/w test. On the PC there are no problems.

Send it back!

Having 2GB MMC works fine with me... Thank God.. was worried
I have the same problem with the Transcend 2GB card. When syncing Avantgo to the card I get a "write teimeout" error. The card is still there when I look at it with the explorer.
2GB SD card
I have no problems with a 2GB Sandisk SD card.
I bought an Integral 2GB High Speed SD card. Initially, my JASJAR refused to recognise the card as anything more than 128 MB. I tried formatting it with Pocket Mechanic (Low level and normal format) - still 128MB. My notebook (with a built-in SD card reader) also saw it a 128 MB. My EPSON card reader did not recognise it at all.
After finding a post on a forum through Google, I found out that the iMate JAM apparently creates a new partition on the 2GB card, and that it was a known problem (for the JAM).
Using Partition Magic, we saw that it in fact created three partitions (128 MB, 1GB and the remainder, but we could not format or use the other).
My husband got the brilliant idea to put the card in my Nikon CoolPix, which told us that the card was not formatted. He told the camera to format it, which worked -- I can now use the card as 2GB in both my JASJAR and my laptop.
I hope this helps somebody ...

THX!
Got no probs on my scandisc ultraII card on jasjar either, but my laptop won't recognise it! :?
Good thing I have a PC too!
No problems with my UltraII card either...
I always format my cards with my PC or Laptop before using them, and it's always been fine in PPC, PC, and Laptop.

my MDA doesnt see my mini sd card

My MDA has stoped seeing my memory card. I have a 2gb Moby Memory card. Is there a seting to turn it on. My laptop has no problem with the card.
Did you try to reformat it on your laptop? format it with the FAT file system and get yourself a trial copy of pocket mechanic, you can get it from handango, and reformat it with the tools in that program. I experienced the same thing with my sd card, and after formating it the first time on my pc it still wouldn't recognize it, I then formatted it with FAT filesystem instead of FAT32 and my MDA recognized it, hope this fixes your predicament also.
Try formatting it with a different unit. I used my digital camera to format the miniSD, ofcourse I used an adapter to make it SD. I also lost my miniSD during the first two days I got it. I have a Patriot 1gb miniSD, comes with an adapter for SD.

I had the same Problem.
This is a known bug. Paste a sticker to make it thicker on the sd-card.
When I formated using my camera, it reduced the memory gown to 1gb. That still did not work until i used a bit of selotape to make the card thicker did it work. Thank for all your help.

MicroSD format question.

I currently have a 2GB MicroSD card with a GPS program loaded on it. The card was provided to me by the manufacturer. I prefer not to constantly switch the card out to put in a 6GB one that holds music, movies, photos, etc...
I tried to simply copy the contents of the GPS card to my new 6GB one and when I start the program I get a hardwareID error.
I figure it has something to do with the volume serial number or possibly the mbr/disk signature, but not sure. Anyone know of any utilities that can assign the volume number? additionally anyone have any ideas of what the software could be checking against on the hardware?
I'm not in anyway trying to cheat on licensing, it is just purely an inconvenience.
micro sd
I think the max size is 4Gb
I have the 6GB card working fine on the tilt.
Of course anything past 2GB has to be formatted FAT32, so the 2GB is FAT, while the 6GB card is FAT32, but other than that, it works fine for storing music, documents, videos, etc, just not for my GPS program that seems to be locked to that particular 2GB microsd card.
That's the exact reason I won't buy any GPS prog from a vendor that locks it to a particular memory card.
Can a sd card be partitioned ?
If so set up a 2 gig fat 16 and a 4 gig fat 32!
I don't know if it can be done or if it will work.

With a little trickery they can be partitioned in XP/Vista using diskpart, etc., but they won't be visible to WM5/6 then.
Kinda useless if you want it to work with your Kaiser
It could be a bad flash card (either one). Try copying folders one at a time from the 2GB to the 6GB card, instead of all at once. Do the file transfer on a desktop PC, as WM6 might choke when doing large file transfers between FAT and FAT32 (not that its a known bug, but hey, its Windows...).

Mini Sd card not recognized in my wizard

hi guys your forum is great cant stop reading. But i have an issue i recently bought an 4gb mini sd card for my phone the card works but is like it works when it feels like if i put it in and wait for a while or just randomly turn the phone off and on it will work i format it using my card reader through windows on fat32 and all the thing is it works but i should not have to be going through all of this for the sd card to work.
My next problem is i recently upgraded to SNN Edition Version 3.0 LITE and i have to say i love it but before my phone could detect my sd card and from i did i upgrade its not detecting my card at all to be on the safe side i took out the card before the upgrade and now its not detceting at all please can any one help me is there a patch i can use or something HELP!!
i think try to format via fat16 option. i had earlier 2gb kingston card sdmini after formatting it works welll
i was doing some reading and i was told that 2gb is the highest for formating with fat16 i have a 4gb card so this cant work for me a even look in properties and the only option is fat32.any body else as any more in puts.
4GB cards are almost exclusively multilayer, and cannot be read by the Wizard's card reader. You are basically limited to 2GB, and it should be formatted as FAT, not FAT32, as was already noted. If there's a 4GB model that's single layer, that's great, but I don't know about it. (...not saying I'm the definitive authority, either...)
which program can i use in windows to format the card in FAT and not FAT32 and as i said before the phone could read the card before i did the upgrade the only thing its takes a while for the phone too detect the SD card and thats in FAT32 format but i will try the FAT format.
from my experience you can't put ANY 4gb minisd card into the wizard and have it work correctly since it uses double buffering which the wizard doesn't support.
you have 2 options.. either buy a 2gb one.. or format only half of the card in FAT ...as myrddin said.. this might use only 1 buffer..
if that doesn't work, you can look for a program which blocks clusters and block half of the clusters on the card. that would certainly work but you won't be able to get 4gb out of that card ever again.
i'd go with the first option.. 2gb cards aren't that expensive nowadays.
well guys i bought the sd card for my phone and i research before buying it and it caused work so there must be a way for this to work even if i have to split it in 2 partitions but i am at work now so when i get home i will work on it (good thing i bought that card reader) lol but i will give you guys an update soon i plan to format the card in fat16 all 4gb if that dont work i am going to split the partition in 2 but i would love a single partition but what ever works.
I have a 2gb SD Card...
Hey guys... i have a 2gb kingston card (micro SD with adaptor to miniSD), but i have the exact same problem... my wizard just stopped reading the card! Sometimes it reads, but suddenly wizard stops, i have to make a soft reset and.... the card is gone... i formated it to fat32 and fat... and it still doesn't work... any idea? thanks

Correct-o-mundo.
Another common problem (related more to card readers than just to Wizards) is that the reader contacts (and even the card contacts) can become worn, dirty, or corroded. Try removing the card and battery, and get in there with a VERY bright light, a magnifying glass, and some cotton swabs dipped in isopropyl. Clean the metal contacts on both card and Wizard. Be careful not to soak the chip. Damp, not wet. Soak the chip and you WILL be buying a new one soon.
Let things dry COMPLETELY before trying anything, or you'll be sorry.
