Windows update - Touch HD General

Hello, has anyone ever got a "windows update" from the option in System Settings?
ive tried loads of times but no update?
Paul.

No, never worked ???

Nope, never had one. Think this is overlooked by MS

Ok not just me then, cheers fellas
Paul.

I wish we didn't wait for the PDA developers to install updates. I wish it was like a normal PC. I wish I could just download an OS from Microsoft an install it to my PDA and download drivers from HTC's web site...

update
Here are some quotes from WindowsMobile team about this topic:
"As I mentioned in my responses to the previous posts, the update capability is something we are continuing to work on, and our licensing restrictions do not permit us to distribute software directly to end-users. The Windows Update for Windows Mobile capability is designed to deliver critical fixes, which we have not had the need to use yet thankfully!"

How the hell do I De-cert my XDA2

Sorry if this gets asked all the time guys, have scoured your excellent forum for info but to no avail.
My ignorance is due to being an ex smartphone owner, which i am sure you know are easy to de-cert.
I just want to chuck a load of games and non-approved utils onto my XDA, but DAMMIT, it won't fookin let me
Cracking forum by the way guys, has taken me ages to find you!
Mart
Never touched a smart phone. I've never heard of "de-cert." What is it? Doesn't sound like something that needs to be done on the XDA, certainly I've never seen it said here, and I've been around since the dinosaur ages.
It allows non valid windows CE applications to be installed - i.e. not officially approved software
I've never heard of an officially-approved piece of software for a Pocket PC. I don't think there is a certification program for that. In any case, your PPC will let you install any PPC software, approved or not, whatever, it won't care.
Excellent, however I keep getting
"filename" is not a valid windows CE setup file.
Am I being stupid here, installing in the wrong way?
I have only seen that error when I tried running the wrong version (not for Pocket PC) on my unit.
Might want to make sure the app is for Pocket PC and that the cpu type is correct.
Cheers - most of my smartphone software must be incompatible then, even though the spv uses a version of PPC.
Any site recommendations where I can get hold of PPC software for free? seems to be damn expensive in most places!
Thanks again
Smartphone software IS certified... Basically, you pay Microsoft to be able to have your software run on smartphones.
Regular pocket PC or windows mobile on xda devices does NOT have this restriction (and those devices are what this forum is about..)
Smartphone software is not PPC-compatible. Lots of titles have releases for both PPC and Smatphone, but I've never seen one that has both in the same release (though I suppose you could package multiple versions with one installer).
In any case, go to the developers' sites and see if they have PPC compatible versions.

Not true, some Smartphone software is certified but not all. There are many applications available for MS Smartphone that can only run on application unlocked handsets. Not all authors can afford to apply for certification and for many utils it's hardly worth the bother. Thankfully for most of the existing handsets it is relatively easy to application unlock them so that uncertified apps can be installed.
And going back to the OP's question, Smartphone software is not the same as PocketPC software and whilst a few rare titles can be run on both, most cannot.
www.freewareppc.com
has loads of goodies on there.
Smartphone software wise - I am not sure but I think I saw an emulator for PPC at one point - could not find it though - does anybody know if this exists as there is some good programs for smartphone that have no PPC equal???

Antivirus for jam???

Hi all,
what is the best Antivirus for my Jam?
Is it really necessary?
I don't want to install stuff that make my jam too slow...
I wouldn't worry about it yet. I don't think there are too many viruses out there yet as there aren't too many people with pda phones or pdas on the net or constantly receiving MMS messages. Later in the future, yes.
I don't think we are there yet, either. But the latest ROM has eTrust in it, I think...
I'va installed the last WWE ROM and I've not got it... :-(
It comes on the extended rom, so if you did big storage and removed it, then naturally it's not there. Alternatively, grab it as a standalone from Club I-mate (requires an account)
Oh, and the virus database in it doesn't have a single virus so it's pretty useless at the moment. You'll be able to scan but there'll be nothing to look for!!

I stand corrected. I looked on google and found this dated 19th July so it's fairly old. BBC news of first virus.
I also went to F-Secure antivirus site, which has a pocket PC version of it's software. Turns out they have 2 virus definitions. One's the virus mentioned above, the other is called Brador and is a backdoor trojan. Neither of which have been released out in the "wild", just proof of concept viruses.
Sorry to seem misleading. I'm not panicking yet, though.
Well... in your opinion wich antivirus is the best?
And what about spyware? Is there anything for that on ppc's, or aren't there any ppc-spywares out there yet?
Was just doing a search through the forums to see what would be good for my o2 mini.
It appears antivirus isn't that important yet....
Although this thread is a few months old however so are people still of the same opinion or do most has some type of antivirus installed now?
Cheers for some new thoughts

[REQ] WM Marketplace

Someone has a working cab of Windows Mobile Marketplace ?
thanks
Do you not see everywhere that Windows Mobile Marketplace is not RELEASED YET. You can't get it or use it, only Microsoft and Partners have it now. Wait till Windows Mobile 6.5 FINAL gets released and then download it and it will probably come with the Marketplace. And you can't get it on Windows Mobile 6.0 or 6.1
READ FIRST
It is not a standalone application that you install on your device, it is a website that you can access through your browser and then use to download applications, programs and games etc. It's just not up and running yet.
You can access it at the moment but like I said, it's not active, try it - http://client.marketplace.windowsmobile.com/
It will still be possible to access it on past Windows Mobile operating systems too with it being a website but I think they are planning on having apps mainly for WM 6.5.
Hope this helps.
I believe a user by the name of MrHawaii actually was able to connect to the Marketplace for a brief amount of time, in which he was prompted to download a CAB file that I'm assuming works something like a downloader or a small program used in conjunction with the web service. Regardless of whether or not the CAB is out in the wild or not, you still do need to be able to access the website, and the only people that have access to that at the moment is developers.

Windows Mobile Update on the HD2?

Perhaps I'm being a penis but can you update the HD2 like a desktop edition of windows i.e. vista / 7 on the flyi.e. over 3G/wifi or are any updates only via Sync?
What is this, I don't even
Windows 6.1 had an update option in the start menu, and that used a data connection/wi-fi - whatever was available. I suppose you could download updates and do it via the usb cable. Anyway, if this option still exists in 6.5, I've not seen it anywhere.
This is probably all moot anyway. I don't think Microsoft bother making updates for windows mobile. That's what xda devs is for
Thanks - I guessed there are very few updates for Winmo just an idea

And where would chefs here on xda get those updates if MS didn't make them? Of course they make updates (called Adaptation Kit Upgrades, referred to as AKU usually), they just don't distribute them to end users. There's a big difference between WM and your desktop system, for major updates on your phone you'll usually have to reflash the whole ROM image. And that ROM image is made by the OEM, not Microsoft, and includes tons of OEM software and drivers. This software can even break with a new update, so pushing OS changes directly could cause lots of problems. So the only safe way to have updates would be from the OEM (HTC in our case). Or we can get them unofficially here.
The Windows Update applet in earlier versions of WM had only minor updates such as daylight time database changes and so on, so I guess it was rarely used by anyone.
Thanks for the Info - I get the drift

[HOW TO] Transfer your CoPilot from WinMo -> Android

***Update 3*** 09th August 2011
ALK have restored the CP8 download. Link here - thanks to Antus.
***Update 2*** 06th June 2011
It would seem with the introduction of CoPilot 9, a number of changes have occurred to their web site. As such, the old free APK update for CP8 has been removed from their system and can no longer be downloaded. It's still legit to own as it requires activation, so if someone could host the file contact me and I'll add the link, otherwise, this thread is effectively invalid. Sadly I no longer have the APK in question, because I just invested in CP9.
***Update*** 15th August 2010
This isn't specifically for the HD2. In fact this works for any device! WinMo -> Android OR Android -> WinMo.
Since those geniuses Coutlla/Dan fixed GPS for the HD2 Android, I thought for those of you who have purchased Co-Pilot and wish to transfer it over to Android, I'd make a small guide.
Requirements:
- A *LEGAL* copy of CoPilot 8 for Windows Mobile and the license key
- The latest version of CoPilot 8 for Android (works in Froyo now): LINK RESTORED
I bought it about 8 months ago for my HD2, for Windows Mobile 6.5. Great piece of software. I contacted ALK to ask if I could transfer between OS's and they said no, it wouldn't work! It also clearly states on their web site that transfers don't work: LINK RESTORED
So being stubborn, I thought I'd take my own license from WinMo and deactivate it, stick it into Android and needless to say - it works and I have a fully legal copy of CoPilot 8 running on my Android Froyo device. Those cheeky beggers at ALK!!!
So how to get it working:
Make sure you still have CoPilot installed under Windows Mobile and activated;
Launch CoPilot. Go to the Menu|Settings|Licensing (NOTE: If you can't see this, find "More Settings" and select that first to show Licensing);
Select your Map Region from the list (Mine was UK and Ireland), then press "Deactivate";
CoPilot will now shut down;
Boot into Android and using an installer, install the APK file which is in the requirements section at the top of the page or here (LINK RESTORED);
Open CoPilot from the Menu and it will ask for your license info. Enter this as you did when you first bought CoPilot (usually a username and password);
Bada Bing. That should be it, all working!
Just to clarify one further time, this is only for legally purchased licenses. No questions about dodgy software please. Thank you.
Very interesting, thanks !
How about Map data ? where do u put it on the card ?

It should be on the root of your SD Card in a folder "CoPilot".
I wonder if the text to speech feature will also work.... using the current key.
Thanks, thought that would work, and now I know it will! I'll be setting it up as well.
That was the only reason I would need to go back to WM. I use CP8 all the time!

Haha, my motivation for switching was the same. It's better in Android IMO. For example you use the Android keyboard so it's qwerty and accepts voice input. It also has controllable volume over bluetooth For me I always listen to Music via bluetooth and in WinMo there was no control over individual volumes. If I had the volume at a normal level for music, the speech was far too loud. Now it's all controllable

My only concern would be that Copilot ALK may not want us to transfer. But I do think that other HD2 owners or anyone coming from WM should be, and would be, happy to transfer/use CP8 that they paid for on Android.
So I guess ...go for it. I'm switching ASAP just in case...hehe.
Ok, cool thanks. Just thought I'd quickly check - I had the same thoughts as you (noellenchris). I've written up a short article on this, so it should get published sometime tonight/tomorrow (GMT).
If there any strong objections let me know
All working, the only thing I should have done was deactivate Premium Live Services first in WM.... before the UK/IRELAND maps.... not really a big problem as the live services are a waste of time anyway.
To be honest, comparing Copilot to the free Google Navigation app I think Copilot will be dead and buried within a year.
what about tomtom navigator?
deactivation in android?

I have done this before to transfer between winmo devices and it works a treat. Do you know if you can do the reverse of this and deactivate it in Android and then reactivate it back in winmo? Be useful to know before I get locked in to android.

Yes it is 100% reversible. ALK can't be bothered with all the enquires I think and I truly believe it's a good way for them to make a quick extra money! As a user who paid for it once, I refuse to pay again. Take Photoshop for example, if you buy it for a mac, you can use the same license on a PC and vice versa.
Enjoy!

Yes you can, but you have to contact them via email or their web site. Just explain and ask them to release your license. I've done it on numerous occasions.
