Haykuro SPL 1.33.2005 - G1 General

I have currently the Engineering SPL and I am thinking of trying the Haykuro builds that for what I have been reading require the SPL 1.33.2005, for what I understand it frees up memory for Haykuro builds, my question is would I lose the functionality of the Engineering SPL? Is the SPL 1.33.2005 like the standard rainbow SPL? Would I be able to return to the JF builds if I decide too?
Could someone go about the pros and cons of going to the SPL 1.33.2005? Thank you all in advance.

pros more space and compatible with all builds
cons you may brick your phoen to a point that we cannot fix
thank you have a nice day

I agree to me its just a normal spl and I already tried flashing to id 1.51 and it worked fine. U have to be carefully web flashing that spl because if urnot carefully it will brick Ur phone. Just do more research

Thank you for the answers guys, one more question would I be able to use fastboot with SPL 1.33.2005?

yes...
also, since it hasn't been mentioned in this thread...make sure you have a PVT board before applying this SPL (check by booting to your current bootloader / SPL / skateboarding android screen and read the text @ the top)
...and update to the latest radio BEFORE flashing the SPL

yes you can.

Guys, I already have the 261 radio which i believe is the latest one, do i still need to reflash the radio before i flash the latest spl or can i just skip the radio?

You have the correct radio, so as long as you have a PVT board, you should be okay. Just don't flash back to an older radio version with that SPL.

Does It Have Hard SPL Features?
Does anyone know whether this has the same features of the HardSPL? I don't want to lose the ability to do nandroid backups, or to have a busybox console to get into.
If this is just a modified HardSPL then I'll probably take the plunge, otherwise I think I'll wait until Haykuru's modifications get added to the HardSPL.

That's the deciding factor for me. I like being able to flash back and forth between radio roms. The original 1.22 RR seems to work better for me with most of the updated roms.

Sorry to ask but I searched for this answer to no avail - how can I tell if I have a PVT board? I had my G1 before release (employee), I am almost positive it is, but is there a terminal command to show what version I have?

i tried flashing the new SPL to my G1 with Dude's 1.2a and my phone was hanging @ the G1 screen. I applied the old HardSPL and everything is ok again... can i apply the new SPL and reflash dude 1.2a and get good results??

i had HardSPL then finally decided to flash H's SPL. be careful because it is possible to brick your phone!
the most noticeable difference i saw was the more internal memory. from a wipe, from 52mb norm to 62+mb i think.
this is what cyanogen told me about H's newest SPL.

mine too
have you done anything to your phone yet

I tried flashing the radio and SPL before I read not to (rogers ftw)
And it went to the flash loading bar and just resets and nothing happens. I tried the alt-w first and flashing just doesnt work.
I know now that was a bad idea but it didnt do anything anyway.

Where did the extra System space come from?
I have a question about Haykuro's SPL. I understand he bumped up the System size. But where did he allocate space from? Will that space be needed in the future? Sorry, if this is a noob question.
Thanks

Why upgrade the SPL?

It is just the boot loader (Second Program Loader) correct?
If i have a boot loader that is capable of applying update.zip files why should i change that?
I have no fear of bricking, can always re-root from scratch.
Thank you for your time.
if a new SPL has features you desire (bigger system partition...allowing foreign builds, etc., etc.)...that aren't in your current SPL
if you have hardSPL and are satisfied w/ the size of your system partition, leave it be. it's the best one for you at this time

you should rethink your lack of fear of "bricking"
if the SPL doesn't apply correctly, there is no restore from backup or re-rooting at this time.
make sure you have a PVT board first and chances are lower for mishaps

I also wonder why someone would put it online and recommend people to update without knowing it could harm someones phone....
A lot of threads get killed because sources can not be verified and such, but a spl which causes a lot of bricked phones is still online.... Until there is a 100% proven way to update the new spl ( if its even a new spl for the dream ) I would like mods to consider to take it offline or remove the download links from this forum, like they do with some roms ( which cant cause any real harm ).
I hope you people all thought about how this new SPL could potentially brick your phone when a new Radio comes along just as using the old radio with this SPL could brick your phone.
Is the new 1.33.2005 spl backwards compatible with older roms? I am trying to find the jf rom that has nandroid as part of the recovery console and Im going to have to flash each one till I find the rom with it but I want to make sure the spl will work with the older builds.
Or if anyone knows where I can get the recovery image with nandroid, that would be appreciated!
Thanks

I tend to agree. The way these phones are setup, recovering from a failed ROM flash is safe and easy. But flashing an SPL that was made for a different device is just asking for trouble IMO. Until someone comes up with a working JTAG, I'm sticking with HardSPL.

Attempt to fix my phone

First, my problem started with either updating to the new JFv1.43 recovery, or flashing the new SPL from Haykuro.
Symptoms:
1. Everytime I flash a new ROM, wipe or no wipe, I come back stuck at the T-Mobile G1 boot screen. The only way I've found to get through is to take out battery and boot into ADB (the Camera + Power screen) and "fastboot flash boot boot.img". This almost always work.
2. Nandroid stopped working. Nandroid always errors during the process of backing up, and I'd only have splash1.img and splash2.img in the nandroid folder of my SD card. Kind of want to try reflashing the JFv1.43, or even go back to 1.42 (can't find) for troubleshooting. Also not sure if this would affect the new SPL and cause a brick.
3. "Insufficient storage available" with Dude's and Cyanogen's builds. I'm not sure if this one is related to recovery or SPL. This might be caused by past attempts at doing apps2sd (I've done both symlink and unionfs).
Anyways, losing Nandroid has lost me a lot of time with trying out new ROM's, I'd really like to get it fixed. The boot stuck is a nuisance, but much less troublesome than losing Nandroid.

I'm not positive (***so dont do this without researching***) but i think it would be possible to flash to a different one ( i mean, you flashed another SPL over the original one, right? ).
There is a "mega-thread" that has information on all the SPL's and their features/updates. If the info is anywhere, it's prob in there. Search in the Dev forum.

I have flashed from the New H SPL to the HardSPL i originally had on the phone when I found out people were having trouble with the SPL. I install the NEW SPL again to run Hero, but you CAN flash it back to the older SPL I would recomend HARDSPL though.
*not responsible if this doesn't work but I was able to do this without any trouble. Was just a bit nerve racking.
i am 99% sure the above post is correct, don't flash a different radio, but you can flash another SPL right over the Haykuro SPL. i would double check that as there is a 1% chance it will totally screw your phone and i don't wanna be the guy that told you to do something that bricked your phone, but it should work. just to be safe you should make sure splash1 is the t-mo g1 screen so if it stops you can call t-mo
i flashed from the latest haykuro spl 1.33.2005 , to the original t-mobile spl HBOOT-0.95.0000. I fastbooted and it was showing the original spl installed.

Haha yeah same here bro.
Hope someone can enlighten us about how they upgraded their spl.
All I know is that its short for "splash image" and has something to do with the boot up process. My dad is a programer (during a coversation about android and linux) explained the SPL to me during Fourth of July but I was a little too drunk to care and pay attention.
well actually SPL stands for Second Program Loader. That much i know for sure. I also know that its the equivalent of a bootloader. what i DONT know and neither does anyone else by the looks of it (lol), is what the difference is between a perfect SPL and a Danger SPL, and how to go about flashing a danger SPL for mytouch 3g? and which danger SPL is the best?

But, first, do try to use the search function in these forums. Pretty new myself but have good luck finding the resources I need through search. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking#sec01
"Perfect" SPL Revisions (that prevent us hacking)
Currently HBOOT-1.33.0006 and HBOOT-1.33.0010 are the known 'Perfect SPL' revisions on the Sapphire handsets that we know of.
It is not possible to fastboot a ROM using these and you need to wait until someone has hacked it.
Edit (12 Aug 2009) : Now you can! Refer to How-To - Fix that perfected SPL - Root the T-Mobile myTouch 3G
So what is an SPL anyway? What does it do?
The SPL, or Second Program Loader, is essentially the Android bootloader. It's job is more than just loading the Android OS - it also offers several other boot options, including Recovery mode, Fastboot, and HBOOT modes, and ultimately it's the SPL that allows manipulation of the flash nand on your device. Part of the SPL's job is to ensure that the data flashed to the device is correct. Most of the current shipping SPLs (apart from the "Perfect SPL's) let us flash a complete ROM image, but don't let us flash a recovery rom or boot image as it checks the verification signature. Haykuro has modified the SPL's available to remove this check and this is what the Engineering SPL's available offer. As the SPL is so crucial to the handset though, you have to be very careful when flashing it as if it's updated incorrectly then you may be incapable of restoring it without specialised hardware and knowledge. You essentially have a very expensive brick

Off topic, but thanks for posting. I wish more people were this patience and helpful. Kudos. Especially on the comedy inoffensive flame.
ive already seen that article, but it still does not explain what i want to know. I already know what an SPL does, but what does a Danger SPL do that my perfect SPL cant. is it worth flashing my SPL? which one should i flash and how? I cant find answers to these questions.
ok ive just foudn a bit of info saying that a danger SPL allows you to flash hero ROMS onto your mytouch.. but WTF??? Ive already flashed 2 different Hero ROMS onto my mytouch with no problems and I have a Perfect SPL. the only reason i didnt keep em was cause the device was slow! So wtf is going on with my phone? what am I missing here rofl
The "Danger" (or "Death") SPL is Haykuro's 1.33.2005 and there is only one. It changed the nand partitions sizes (or sth like that) on the G1 and that was why it is required to run Hero ROMs on it. It's not required to run Hero ROMs on the Magic though. What you're talking about are "Engineering" SPLs and the main difference with stock SPL is that, AFAIK, they bypass security checks to allow the flashing of unsigned update packages. Also, I think only Engineering and non-perfected SPLs allow the use of the fastboot protocol, the possibility to flash recovery images directly and the use of Nandroid to make backups.
To me it's all about unlocking everything but I could have lived with my stock non-perfected SPL as I could already do everything I wanted.
Signature checking is not necessary a bad thing. Perfected SPL is a different story as it really reduces you possibilities but I know there are workarounds.

Very informative. I was able to perform a Nandroid backup successfully while still on the "perfected SPL" so what's up with that? I guest I'll just stick with my perfected stock SPL for now, until I find a really great rom I want to flash but requires a non-perfected/eng spl.

That's why I said "I think"... fortunately I've never had a perfected SPL and I can only repeat what others have been saying about it. Can you restore the backup too?
As you'd already noticed, information on the subject is quite vague but you are right anyway, the only reason to change SPL should be if the ROM you want to install requires it ;-)

SPL Confusion

I'm a little confused on some of the specifics of SPLs.
When I rooted my MT3G I used the one-click method and didn't have to worry about doing anything with the SPL.
I'd like to try some of the other ROMs out there - but I see that they either require an Engineering SPL or the Death/Danger SPL. I know that the SPL changes the partitions on the internal memory of the phone - but I can't seem to find any info on what those new sizes are.
I've been told that the D/D is an Engineering one - but that I don't need it? So I'm a little on the confused side now.
Can someone help me get some clarity?
Your spl is not a Eng one it's a Perfected spl.
Try using the goldcard method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218

1.33.0006 is a perfected SPL but as they stated, they're already rooted. Luckily with that SPL you can still use the one-click method. Ignore this post about using the goldcard method.
Eng and Death/Danger SPLs increase your internal ROM, allowing you to flash larger custom ROMs onto your phone. However, you have a MT3G which has much more internal ROM space than the G1, so you DONT need to flash an Eng or Death/Danger SPL. Doing so will only increase you chances of bricking your phone. One bad flash and your screwed. So, if you already have a custom recovery installed, find a custom rom that looks good to you, boot into recovery, perform a full wipe, and flash the rom. However, make sure you pay attention to rom specific installation instructions before you flash it. Some will require that you flash the DRC83_defanged_base.zip before flashing for legal issues, and others, mainly eclair roms, will require you to partition your SD card. Good luck! Also, I recommend using Super D, its a great rom!
Thanks sombionix!
Yeah, I used the one-click method about a week after I got the phone and have been rocking the current CM and A-Ra recovery ever since... this was late 2009.
So...
If something says it needs an Eng/D/D SPL I can ignore that and try flashing anyways? The perfected SPL that you and I have is pretty much an all-purpose SPL (for lack of a better term)? The worst that will happen is that it won't work and I can just restore a BART save of my current working CM?
Damn us geeks for being so fickle.

Pretty much. Most of the ROMs I use are for the G1, which has a smaller partition than the default MT3G. The SPL is what changes this, so if the G1 requires a different SPL, chances are it'll still work fine on the MT3G.
Awesome!
Thanks somb & cougar for the help! I'll be doing some happy flashing sometime in the near future.
The G1's original SPL, and the Engineering SPL and Hard SPL, had less onboard space to store ROMs. The Magic has more onboard space, so Haykuro took the Magic's SPL and backported it to the G1.
This was called the Danger SPL or Death SPL as you needed to be running the latest radio for it to work. Many people did not work this out till later and bricked their G1s. Now we know this, so flashing Danger SPL is not really dangerous at all.
Every Magic already has as much space as a G1 with Danger SPL, so Magic users can use any ROM marked "Danger SPL" without concern.

which spl?

There are multiple SPL's: deathspl, dangerspl, hardspl, Engineering SPL,and others? Does any summery exsist that shows them all?
I can only use one of those at the same time ? (when flashing deathspl after dangerspl it erases dangerspl, right?)
Which one should I take ?
Is Amon Ra Recovery really needed? Can it influence spl, rom, etc when using (the wrong one)?
You can probably get a better description with a quick search but i' do my best to sum it up:
-stock spl: comes with the phone
-engineering spl: from adp1/ion; allows use of fastboot
-hard spl: engineering spl with ability to flash foreign nbh files
-death/danger/haykuro(all the same thing)- from a magic. has more space on system and data and less space on cache. allows you to flash larger roms
You can only have 1 spl at a time. i personally use danger spl but I don't recomend you use it unless you know what you are doing. As the name implies, there are risks to using it. Amonra is not *needed* but it is the most common and is trusted to work.

Recovery: Amon_RA's 1.7.0.1: I'll better install engineering spl to install Amon_RA's (i've red that this is the most safe way) and then flash another one, like dangerspl (for CM 5.0.8test3)?
I think I first flash the enigneeringSPL for amon_RA's,then the radio (needs recovery) and then the SPL I Need for the rom (danger for CM).
Do I need a particural version of an (not stock) SPL for flashing the radio?

*2.22.23.02 seems to get more bars for T-Mobile US customers, though non-US users might have better luck with 2.22.19.26i.
=> I'll think I use 2.22.19.26i as I live in Europe.
After flashing Dangerspl I cannot flash any older radio on the G1?
Are there roms that can't handle Dangerspl?
How can I see what's already installed and which version (like spl, recovery?)
What's the does Danger Spl & gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip do?
A lot of questions I know.

There are multiple SPL's: deathspl, dangerspl

Those are the same thing... 1.33.2005 is the actual identificiation, and it is a FULL ENGINEERING SPL. Compatible with 2.x and 3.x radios.

What is typically called "engineering SPL" for DREAM is actually 0.95.3000. It is not a full engineering SPL, but does offer FASTBOOT.

This is a HACKED version of 0.95.3000, which identifies itself as 10.95.3000. The difference has something to do with flashing NBH files, which is actually something that once you have a [partial]engineering SPL installed, you NEVER WANT TO DO!!!

STOCK SPL 0.95.0000 -- this is an UNDESIRABLE SPL. There's NO FASTBOOT mode.
1.33.2003 is a nice one... it is a full engineering SPL and is compatible with 1.x and 2.x radios and has the same partition layout as the 0.95.x000 SPLs. There is no brick risk when going from a 0.95.x000 SPL --> 1.33.2003, and you benefit from having a FULL engineering SPL.
HACKED 1.33.2003 is an interesting one... it has the partition layout of 1.33.2005, but is compatible with 1.x and 2.x radios.
Note about radio compatibility:
0.95.x000 SPLs are compatible with 1.x and 2.x radios.
1.33.x003 SPLs are compatible with 1.x and 2.x radios.
1.33.xxxx SPLs, with the exception of 1.33.x003 are compatible with 2.x and 3.x radios.
Does any summery exsist that shows them all?

See above.
Note about BRICKS:
The most common brick is the radio/SPL mismatch brick.
There are NO SPLs compatible with ALL radios.
2.x radios are compatible with ALL SPLs.
When you have a mismatched RADIO and SPL, and have the misc partition set to boot-recovery, you will have a brick on your hands. This often happens when using RECOVERY to install a new RADIO or SPL.
With the TRUE ENGINEERING SPLs, you can flash radio or SPL using FASTBOOT. Flashing with FASTBOOT is BRICK-PROOF.
You CANNOT fastboot a radio or SPL from a 0.95.3000 SPL.
You CAN safely flash 1.33.2003 via RECOVERY ***FROM*** 0.95.x000.
Then you can FASTBOOT the 1.33.2005 SPL safely.
If fastboot-ing in a radio or SPL results in a mismatched radio and SPL, ***FASTBOOT CONTINUES TO WORK*** -- assuming that you havent done something really stupid, like fastbooting in a NON-FULL-ENGINEERING SPL.
In general, the safe way to change radio or SPL on the device is to go from 0.95.x000 --> 1.33.2003, and then ONLY use FASTBOOT for switching SPLs or RADIOs in the future, and ONLY switch between 1.33.2003 and 1.33.2005.
I can only use one of those at the same time ? (when flashing deathspl after dangerspl it erases dangerspl, right?)

Unless you have a wormhole intersecting your phone, this should be the case.
Which one should I take ?

A part or full engineering SPL.
If you already have any such SPL, no need to change.
If you want to install a large system image, look up FIRERAT's nonedanger procedure.
Is Amon Ra Recovery really needed? Can it influence spl, rom, etc when using (the wrong one)?

The kernel must match the radio in order to boot. Beyond that, the choice of what recovery image you prefer is your own business.
Thanks for the detailed answers, I think it should work without a problem (just thinking of which radio I should use).
I have spl 10.95.3000. (radio 2.22.19.26I) on the phone when it arrived.Any suggestions which spl I should flash next? (I'll use FR CM5.08test4).

CAN I safely flash 1.33.2003 (the old hardspl) via RECOVERY ***FROM*** 10.95.3000 too? (already on phone)
I'm a little bit uncertain, but I guess it should work.
Please confirm.
** DO NOT flash to 1.33.2003 from ANYTHING BESIDES 0.95.x000 or 1.33.0003.**
So I can't do this (I have 10.95.x000).
Any "safe" solution for deathspl (could do recovery but it's to risky for me)?
edit: should work. Thanks (reply on another topic)!

Just a small footnote: the hacked version of of 1.33.2003 in question identifies its self as '1.33.2003AF' on the spl screen. (The non hacked one is just '1.33.2003')
