JF ADP 1.5 Speaker phone - G1 General

Has anyone else noticed an extremely reduced amount of sound from the speaker phone during calls?

Wow i thought that this was just my phone playing up, but yes I have noticed it's dramatically reduced.

I've got the same exact problem....The question is, is this jf1.5 specific? or do ppl running haykuro & other builds of cupcake have the same problem?

Thats what im wondering too. I loved the speaker volume before, as i am in CA, with the whole blue tooth stuff. I didnt have to get one, i could hear everyone with the phone in my lap...
Now...It's like just talking on the phone normal...

Looks like we're all in the same boat. Speaker volume sucks now.

Works fine for me. Just as loud as it was with RC33 if not louder, I usually have to turn it down a lot.

Working fine here too. I'm using JF's 1.5, and I did the usual wipe before and after upgrading.

There is an obvious change in volume. I used to listen to music on my phone while taking a shower but now I can barely hear the music from my phone over the sound of the water.
Is there a fix or hack for this??

maybe its something with the radio? Idunno. This is funny b/c I couldn't turn my speaker phone down enough last night while using it. It was almost too loud.

How many of you did complete Clean wipes before install?
I installed Via JfMod Updater App...Maybe it was something to do with this? And i haven't installed the radio...

it seems louder than b4. I did a complete wipe and my phone has never run better.

Calls are unbelievable loud with JFv1.5

Hi
I flashed my G1 with the lucidREM Mod of JFv1.5 and since then calls are unbelievable loud. The volume is as low as it can be for calls and I have to hold it about 2cm away from the ear, as the speaker is still so loud anyone in the room can hear what the person is telling me on the phone.
Is there a way to lower the volume besides the + - buttons?
Thanks in advance

Sounds like it may be in speakerphone mode. Start a call, open the menu, and switch it back to normal.
No, the speaker on the back is off. The small one you hold onto your ear is that loud!
I've recently updated to JFv1.5 as well and I'm not having any issues with volume. Admittedly the sound volume is louder for voice and media but when the volume is set to it's lowest levels it's a normal volume for phone calls; definitely not ear-splitting or anything.
Maybe you're hearing has improved dramatically overnight; been bit by a genetically-modified spider lately?
Hmmm... spiderbite, that would explain this huge red and hurting bitewound... i don't know. Unless I find this spider I would say it's the phone, not my ear
I'm running JF 1.5 ADP and in-call volume does not actually adjust here either - even though it shows it adjusting on the screen, the actual volume remains the same.
THAT sounds more like an explanation. Any solution?

I'd like to know myself. A friend with JFv1.5 says his in-call volume control is functioning properly. So what did we do wrong?
I am also experiencing the same problems.
Updated the radio, updated to JF's1.5, had to do an erase and all seems fine, just having this problem of volume in-call.
I can confirm its not in speaker mode and volume doesn't seem to change at all.
Help!
Hey all,
I swear when I first rooted and installed JF1.5 I had followed the directions and completed the step to update my radio to 2.22.19.29I - but I just double checked my baseband and it wasn't right - I reinstalled the radio update from http://android-roms.googlecode.com/files/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip - and now the volume works.
Go to Settings > About Phone > Baseband
Make sure it says 2.22.19.26I
If it doesn't, update your radio again.
Make sure it says 2.22.19.29I
I think you mean 2.22.19.26I
I'm also having this problem on the dude's cupcake - really just in general over all phone firmwares, stock and modded. The call volume is on the loud side - but tolderable - on the lowest setting but UNBELIEVABLY LOUD in headphones on the same setting. My god, my friend said "Hey!" and i instinctually ripped off the headphones and threw them on the floor because of the volume. It really p*ssed me off. This is a phone for f*ck's sake. This is it's primary function. Get it right.
also, the media volume is not loud enough on it's loudest setting.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the volume rocker worked just fine. I my options ranged from unbelievably loud all the way up to "hear it in the next room" loud.
Did you folks who have loud volume wipe (alt+w in recovery) when installing JFv1.5? What applications did you install? What other hacks (a2sd, htc components) have you installed?

yes, wiped in recovery (when installing the dude's build, that is).
Apps:
Marcus' Appstosd 2
SETcpu
GPS Status 2
PDF Viewer (standard with the dude's build)
Advanced Task Manager
WiFi Tether for Root Users
Toggle Settings (cupcake)
and other rinky dink little apps like Astrid and OI shopping and Labrynth and stuff like that
Other Hacks:
The Dude's default theme/template (i didn't dig the default Manup theme...too blue for me - although the transparent notification background was really cool)
HTC Components:
latest radio update 2.22.19.26I

Have you tried wiping and installing a completely bone stock JFv1.5 (no a2sd or anything else) and then checking call volume?
Flashed the radio update, since it wasn't on the phone.
Still doesn't work.
PS: Using the lucid modded version. But even with everything on the phone it wont change the call volume.
Have you tried re-flashing the ROM?? .. I had an issue before and just re-flashed the ROM and worked great!

Speaker volume suddenly low

Last night I played a YouTube clip at full volume (Will It Blend - iPad). The speaker was loud and clear as it has always been for me.
Just this morning the speaker is suddenly much quieter -- volume is still the same. There seems to be no loss in sound quality, it's just a lot quieter. I noticed this when my ring was playing and while watching a few YouTube videos.
Is it possible I somehow damaged the rear speaker with the loud playback of blending metal? I tried flashing a ROM and it didn't help. Again there seems to be no loss in the fidelity of the speaker or its characteristics, just the overall volume level. It's very troublesome since at 100% now it's about the equivalent of 60% of what it was before.
Are there any registry settings I might want to check out to try to boost up the speaker, or just check if they somehow changed and made things quieter?
I am having the exact same issue .. flashed to a new ROM, then the volume is about half of what it usually is - no loss of fidelity, just pure volume.
Have done some searching but there are not a lot of answers, hoping someone with better skills than I can help out.

Figured it out.. it is actually the new ROM that caused the issue, silly me. Turns out the sounds were playing out of the earspeaker after I flashed to the new UniQ ROM. g.lewarne posted a .cab that resolves the issue.

lol - exactly what I was coming back to say.

My #1 concern with Android builds at the moment: Volume.

I know at first many complained of speaker volume being too low. So developers did something. What exactly was done?
I have noticed 3 things with all builds I have tried:
1. When making/recieving calls the initial volume is random, either too soft or too loud. The volume indicator (one that comes up when volume buttons are pushed) never seem to relate to the actual volume level. Often the volume indicator is all the way down while the volume is all the way up. And in order to turn it down I have to adjust the volume indicator all the way up and then move it back down which works. Weird.
2. In-call audio sounds bad compared to WinMo. It sounds harsh, like its very slightly distorted. Its as if there are audio/eq settings in Android that don't match the hardware.
3. Finally, why this is my biggest concern, I blew out my outside speaker when on speaker phone in Android (there was a little pop sound in the middle of a call, I could not hear rings or anything after that, in WinMo as well). I am starting to see others report this. Luckily I got it replaced. But I am now scared to do speaker phone in Android. I have used speaker phone with WinMo plenty with no issues.
I used to have inconsistent sound issues in some builds, I used Louder Volume Hack from the market to modify the volume for headset, bluetooth and in call boost (Range) and it works pretty fine. As for the external speaker, I can't really say... I haven'T noticed.
I have this problem too! My speaker phone blew up while I was using Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 2.3 rEVOlution. I'm pretty sad because I can't even get notifications anymore or rings. I have to leave my phone on vibrate. Speaker doesn't even work on winmo either. I tried task 29, new winmo rom, new android rom and tried to factory reset and nothing work. I'm pretty sure my speaker is done.
Froystone 2.3 on 7.6 the sound volume was great. No problems however going to evolution 2.3 I notice I struggle to hear on some calls.
i get great sound in skinnyevo by phireMOD. havent tried speakerphone though, doubt ever will after reading this thread.
I haven't had any issues with my speaker.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
My number 1 concern too.
I use the HD2 for navigation and playing around. I have a e71 for phonecalls.
The speakervolume with the latest kernels is an absolute dissaster for me.
I don't see any developers reacting on this issue reported by several people which frightens me a bit.
I dont mean to curb people from using their speaker phone. I am just one experience. But I wanted to see if anyone else had the the same problem. Particularly the not-so-great sounds issue in general.
What build was running when You had speaker failure ?
Try the [UPD][BUILD][01.11.10]|<<Mdeejay FroYo Sense Series>>|2.29.405.2\
Next Sense 2.7
Very loud. I had the same problem but this one is 1/2 volume just to be tolerable.

Ok, not one I tried but I hope this turns out to be bad luck and not a general problem !
You say others have had a similar problem ?
from a electronics point of view an impedance miss match speaker/amp would generally damage the amp before the speaker, speakers normally let You know if You are "over driving" them a good while before they burn out
I highly doubt the speaker loss is a general problem. But the less-than-stellar sound seems to be a general problem, and I am wondering if they could be related.
If I had the time I would dig into the builds myself to see how the sound settings are handled n such.
I just put XAndroid 2.2 (Froyo) on my Tilt2 and got it working - I always use the speaker phone when making calls... was very exited to see that it works - until I realized that when the speaker is on in a call - I can hear them - but they cannot hear me. If I turn off the speaker - we can talk again - but for some reason - speaker for me is mute for them... not sure where to post this as a possible bug.
I used this package: XDANDROID.2.2.1.AOSP.FRX03.21.11.10.FULL_PACKAGE
on an AT&T Tilt2 (Rhodium) running Windows mobile, I believe 6.5.
thanks for your patience - this is a big place - and it hard to find my way around.
updated my zimage and the speaker now works
thank you to everyone!

[Q] Rear speaker stays on when I plug in headphones

When I plug in my headphones, I expect the phone the be totally silent to anyone but me, i.e., my sleeping roommates. But I found out that the speaker on my MT4G stays on and plays the sounds along with my headphones. Kinda defeats the purpose of having headphones. Anyone else have this problem or know how to resolve it? This is still a pretty new phone, and I haven't rooted it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
The only app that is supposed to allow the speaker to play while headphones are plugged in is the fm radio. The radio has a toggle to turn this function on or off. Make sure you're not using any speaker widgets. Are you using the headphones that came with the phone? Try switching to different ones. Other than that, IDK.

You're talking about ringtones and notifications, right? Yes, it's hugely annoying and has been like that since the release of the G1. I don't understand why it does that, but it happens with all my wired and Bluetooth headsets. To my knowledge, there's no way to make it truly route ALL sound traffic to the headphones. I've used JF, CM, and Enom's ROMs as well on different handsets, and they do the same thing. I hope that Gingerbread FINALLY addresses this.
However, I'm keeping an eye on this to see if anyone has found a "fix" for this. For now, I just leave it on vibrate at work while using headphones so I get *some* sort of notification when a call/text/whatever is coming in.
Please post questions in Q&A section.
Well, I AM using Gingerbread. I just now tested it and verified that it is indeed only for ringtones and notifications, while music and videos route their sound properly with headphones in.
Apparently Gingerbread did not resolve the problem. :-(

You're using Gingerbread? Please explain? Unless of course you're on a Nexus S.
T-Mobile just released the 2.3 Gingerbread update for the MT4G in a last several days. My phone just out of the blue said I had an update available, and it was Gingerbread.
**EDIT**
Ok I lied, I'm on Android 2.2.1. When I saw the update, I Googled 'Android OS Update', naively assuming, in my new-to-Android inexperience, that it would be that simple. All the results said '2.3 Gingerbread' all over them, so I assumed that's what I was getting.
I was dead wrong, and I'm still on Froyo. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up.
Lol, oh wow!
Everyone's gotta start somewhere, and I guess today was my day to be the n00b.

Sound too quiet, try this.

Hi all,
I've always felt that when playing music on my DHD that it's too quiet, when I've listened to music through my headphones I would say it's acceptable however when I've plugged my DHD into a HiFi or into my stereo in my car I could crank the volume to full control without it been deafening. I happen to find a fix yesterday by accident, I had my DHD plugged into my car stereo and the phone rang, I pulled the audio cable out and answered the phone, when I was done I put the cable back in and immediately I was like WTF just happened now, the music was much louder than what it was before I answered the phone, I would say it was about 30% louder.
I tested my theory by stopping the music and unplugging the cable, plugged the cable back in and started the music, while it was playing I opened the phone and simply dialled any random number and ended the call immediately, when it went back to the music it was most certainly much louder. I've tried it several times now and every time it makes it much louder than what it was before I make a call, I can now no longer turn the stereo full blast as it is simply too loud, just by turning it up to half way I would say it's the equivalent of what it was before when I had it turned up to the maximum.
I'm using Poweramp and I don't know if it's got anything to do with that, I will test it with the built in music player and see what it does. I originally downloaded Poweramp as I thought that the built in music player may be the problem.
i'll repet what you do and post some results... really want a louder volumen in headphones. I plugged my headphone in a Wildfire and it's incredible louder, no talking about an ipod! last week in a party i was ashamed when my friend put off his $50 cell phone and i plugged mine on stereo, so low volume....
wtf, that's true.. really don't understand what the phone turns on!! probably the same thing that volume boost turns on!!
Aha that actually works

Haha! Tried it myself, and it works! Awesome!
I found using shazzam or sound hound while music was playing caused it to go louder. Seems to be when the mic is initialised. Noticed this two days ago

Interesting find.
I've noticed a couple of ROMS which suggest better audio volume by 20%.
For example this one. (Speaker Boost +20%)
So somehow, somewhere the bug or issue has been fixed or improved.

Not really, i'm using that rom right now, and what it makes is improve SPEAKER volume, not from headphone. I made my tests in Android Revolution rom and can confirm that headphone is as quiet as stock rom, and it is improved by the "call trick"!
Thanks for sharing! I was experimenting a bit, and it seems like the simplest way to boost the volume is to make a call while music is already playing. The call MUST connect though, or the volume will revert to normal levels. Tested with Winamp.
Maybe have one of the dev's ask to look into this.
If this is different from the already increased speaker volume output, it probably is a bug that can be fixed / feature that can be 'un-featured'
works fine
I had similar experience with my laptop. When listening a mp3 file, the sound coming out from my laptop seems like no effects, standard sound without bass and treble effect. Have to play a movie file first together and stop the.movie make the song hear with the effect.
I believe this issue coming from my sound driver. Using another OS in same laptop. The sound play normally with no issue.
For our Android, it's about the sound driver too?
well well, i just noticed that in the Android Revolution 4 (leaked gingerbread based), the sound is improved by default, no needing the call workaround, looks like HTC fixed the strange bug for the next version...
i just wanted to share!
edit: if someone could try to confirm it, i'll appreciate! =o)

I had the same problem, go to the Market and download "Volume Ace".
MarkieSA, you're an accident hero.
I noticed sometimes my DHD volume suddenly were loud . If I restart the phone, it will go low . I couldn't find out how to make it loud again until reading your post. I'm using PowerAmp too . I think it plays a role in this case.
Thank you for this great finding.
Really useful little trick for 2.2 users, especially for peeps using stock ROM's without the 20% boost via custom kernels. I had tried some of the volume boost type apps before rooting but all they do is invert the phase of one of the stereo channels. All this does is give you a very tinny mono output which is no use to say the least.
