My #1 concern with Android builds at the moment: Volume. - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I know at first many complained of speaker volume being too low. So developers did something. What exactly was done?
I have noticed 3 things with all builds I have tried:
1. When making/recieving calls the initial volume is random, either too soft or too loud. The volume indicator (one that comes up when volume buttons are pushed) never seem to relate to the actual volume level. Often the volume indicator is all the way down while the volume is all the way up. And in order to turn it down I have to adjust the volume indicator all the way up and then move it back down which works. Weird.
2. In-call audio sounds bad compared to WinMo. It sounds harsh, like its very slightly distorted. Its as if there are audio/eq settings in Android that don't match the hardware.
3. Finally, why this is my biggest concern, I blew out my outside speaker when on speaker phone in Android (there was a little pop sound in the middle of a call, I could not hear rings or anything after that, in WinMo as well). I am starting to see others report this. Luckily I got it replaced. But I am now scared to do speaker phone in Android. I have used speaker phone with WinMo plenty with no issues.

I used to have inconsistent sound issues in some builds, I used Louder Volume Hack from the market to modify the volume for headset, bluetooth and in call boost (Range) and it works pretty fine. As for the external speaker, I can't really say... I haven'T noticed.

I have this problem too! My speaker phone blew up while I was using Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 2.3 rEVOlution. I'm pretty sad because I can't even get notifications anymore or rings. I have to leave my phone on vibrate. Speaker doesn't even work on winmo either. I tried task 29, new winmo rom, new android rom and tried to factory reset and nothing work. I'm pretty sure my speaker is done.

Froystone 2.3 on 7.6 the sound volume was great. No problems however going to evolution 2.3 I notice I struggle to hear on some calls.

i get great sound in skinnyevo by phireMOD. havent tried speakerphone though, doubt ever will after reading this thread.

I haven't had any issues with my speaker.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

My number 1 concern too.
I use the HD2 for navigation and playing around. I have a e71 for phonecalls.
The speakervolume with the latest kernels is an absolute dissaster for me.
I don't see any developers reacting on this issue reported by several people which frightens me a bit.

I dont mean to curb people from using their speaker phone. I am just one experience. But I wanted to see if anyone else had the the same problem. Particularly the not-so-great sounds issue in general.

What build was running when You had speaker failure ?

Try the [UPD][BUILD][01.11.10]|<<Mdeejay FroYo Sense Series>>|2.29.405.2\
Next Sense 2.7
Very loud. I had the same problem but this one is 1/2 volume just to be tolerable.

Ok, not one I tried but I hope this turns out to be bad luck and not a general problem !
You say others have had a similar problem ?
from a electronics point of view an impedance miss match speaker/amp would generally damage the amp before the speaker, speakers normally let You know if You are "over driving" them a good while before they burn out

I highly doubt the speaker loss is a general problem. But the less-than-stellar sound seems to be a general problem, and I am wondering if they could be related.
If I had the time I would dig into the builds myself to see how the sound settings are handled n such.

I just put XAndroid 2.2 (Froyo) on my Tilt2 and got it working - I always use the speaker phone when making calls... was very exited to see that it works - until I realized that when the speaker is on in a call - I can hear them - but they cannot hear me. If I turn off the speaker - we can talk again - but for some reason - speaker for me is mute for them... not sure where to post this as a possible bug.
I used this package: XDANDROID.2.2.1.AOSP.FRX03.21.11.10.FULL_PACKAGE
on an AT&T Tilt2 (Rhodium) running Windows mobile, I believe 6.5.
thanks for your patience - this is a big place - and it hard to find my way around.
updated my zimage and the speaker now works
thank you to everyone!

Incall volume problem

Hi guys,
I've been having alot of problems regarding my Hermes incall volume - it's whisper quiet. It doesn't seem to be the ROM (i've tried 3 now, the official WM5 and 2 WM6) nor the radio (i've tried 1.40 and 1.43)
I've also had a look on the forums to no avail, any fix seems to not apply to my system.
I know it's cheeky to start a new thread, but if I can't find a resolution I think I'll just sell it on the bay.
Cheers
p.s - I have ensured that it is to the fullest using both the scroller and the speaker during a call. The rest of the volume on the phone is fine, loudspeaker and ringing etc.
Ringing volume comes through your speaker in the back, and so does the speaker phone option. Your head piece might be going bad, that might be the reason why you dont hear it loud.
If the phone is still in warranty, then send it to be replaced!

Htc hd2 sound quality

When I talk on this phone, the sound is very poor... Although not too loud (like other complaints) but the sound crackles at high frequencies... The speakerphone is even worse...
Is anyone aware of some tweaks to improve communication sound on this phone?
Can AudioBooster be set up to work with the phone's sound not only the music player? Any other options ???
Thank you in advance.

I think the high volume on this phone is artificially boosted over what it's meant to be, i.e. HTC have modified the audiopara (or something like that) in the Windows folder to try and boost the speakers sound over what it's meant to be.
(Something that ROM coookers figured out on the Diamond I think).
I think, maybe someone can reduce those values back to normal? The speaker will be a little quieter, but it won't crackle or distort as much.

Which radio do you recommend? I have Leo_RADIO_2.07.50.27_2 and a terrible sound while on the phone.
Sound is to loud, impossible to lower volume enough. Much distortion even at lowest volume (which still is to loud). Bad sound in cable handsfree and BT handsfree.
Soundquality while playing music on the other hand is perfect in speaker, handsfree and BT handsfree.
Suggestions?
Since sound is often a pretty subjective matter, so I'd like to interject that the phone network only transmits from around 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz. Therefore the sound of a voice over your phone will never sound as clear and nice as it should, let alone like the 192 kbps-MP3-file you are playing
If it's worse compared to other phones however it's, as stated above, likely a problem with the radio. I use the 2.08.50.08_2 from [REF]The HTC HD2 Radio ROM Thread and have a quite decent quality.
I agree totally - if it sounds good or bad is individually. But, the sound quality in my HD2 is far worse than in my 5 years old SonyEricsson, and when I borrowed a Nokia the other day I was surprised how good (clear, crisp, distorsion free) a cell phone can sound.
I have a lot of distorsion and all too loud sound. Often I have to hold my phone 20 cm away from my ear just to avoid getting half deaf..
Thanks for the tip, I'll try the 2.08.50.08_2 Radio and hope for a better sound
you can try this hotfix...worked very well @my hd2
i got this from another forum.
little info: some users said that the soundlevel is now always set up to 100%...but try it on your own!

Thanks, trying it now, will report back after tomorrow's hardcore testing at work..
Return it if you can...
I had Nokia E71 before and it's speaker is fo another level better than HD2... BUT, question is: when I'm gonna use speakerphone on my HD2? ... almost never
Seems better, but a little to subjective at the moment. Will keep trying and report back!
Definitely better after the patch. Quite good actually. I have not seen any side effects yet, only clear sound, and better volume.
Thanks for the hotfix!
Will try it on my colleague's phone also now.
sound quality
I used the hotfix as well but it appears to have made no difference whatsoever to the quality of sound during calls , so my phone is going back to htc again and if it returns with the same issues i will ask for a replacement as due to the ammoun of posts on here this is a major flaw in the phone and a highly irritating one too , i love this phone but the audio quality during calls is appalling in comparison to all my previous phones .
After a couple more days of testing I found out that the patch gave no effect at all. BUT: I found out another thing: Even though the system volume is at lowest according to the meter, if you increase, you actually lower the volume. So, if you during a call first increase and then decrease the volume, it gets acceptable. Still to loud though.
So, it seems like what HTC really should do is to get the dialer use the sound mixer properly. Today it is obviously oversteering which creates distorsion.
this is a war we won't win

I've bought my HD2 back in Dec the 11th and since then I've been in contact with HTC about fixing this problem. They've given me a debug tool to run on my device, sent the logs twice and so far they've done nothing about it. I've given up. What I do for outgoing calls, while it rings I turn the volume all the way up and then all the way down before the other party answers. doing this you get a decent sound. Can't do much about the incoming calls,
As far as flashing different radios and roms... I've flashed about 30time already. tried all the possible radio/rom combinations but with only slight different results. Nothing to brag about!
the fix I attached helps a little bit!
If anybody finds and cure let us all know! please!!!!!

Sound quality in ear speaker

Hello,
I'm running a X10i since 2 days. I must say that I'm quite happy with it but I have difficulties with the sound of the ear speaker : as the volume is quite low, I have to increase the volume and when I increase the volume higher than 3/4 to full I hear a lot of cracking and popping.
Do you have the same problem ?
BR
On my phone to sound is quite good. I have to volume at max, and dont have any bad sounds, or unwanted noices.
is this while using the bluetooth headset?
Ive not tested it with the bluetooth set yet...
I seldom use that...
So, I think the sound in the phone itself is great.
How's the ringer volume, because I've heard random reports of it being pretty low.
Unfortunately, it is kind of low....
And i noticed when something blocks the speaker, like having it in the pocket, it becomes even lower...
And if in a somewhat noicy area.. Forget about hearing it..
this is currently one of my main gripes with the X10. The earpiece volume on my unit (firmware 1.6) is extremely low. At highest volume I get cracking and popping. If there is even a little background noise it becomes almost impossible to hear through the earpiece. It's getting to the point where the phone is almost unusable in many situations. Also the speaker volume is quite low as well. Miss many calls and notifications even at full volume.
I have just used the BT headset thus far. and the sound quality is good up until I attach them to the speakers.. Then they make a ****t up sound when I change song, or when it is no sound on at all. This does not happen when I connect them directly to the phone.
I’m having problems with the in-call volume on my X10I.
I called orange uk and was told that there have been many similar complaints with this handset on their network.
I was told them that it may be the deal breaker for me and told them i wished to return the handset.
The rep said that the reason the call volume was low was because i was using my old sim and not the one that was shipped with the upgrade.
Apparently there a certain profiles assigned to each sim for each respective handset???
The rep was confident that this would resolve my in call volume issues.
Anyone else aware of this?
Personally I have no problem with the soundquality. My problem is just low volume in the earpiece. Hopefully this can be turned up in updates or custom ROMs.
Earpiece volume is my main issue. However I am being told that it is down to my sim and not a software issue on the X10.
That doesn't sound right to me (excuse the pun) especailly as so many others are having this same fault.
That's irony for you, it works really well at everything else just not as a phone!

Hahaha, yeah well... I can't really say if that's true. I'm gonna try and get a new SIM since mine is like... Two-three years old. But I doubt that the SIM is causing problems like this.
I did get a new SIM with my upgrade, but as i didn't want to be without a phone for Two hrs whilst my services transferred to the new SIM, i just popped in my old one.
I will pop my new one in tonight and post my results.
I'm not confident though.
is it normal to hear own echo during a call?
That depends.. Is the person you are calling in the same room?
I've heard the odd few people mention this but I can't say that i've experienced this.
The volumes that low i probably wouldn't hear it anyway
Am on .16 and the volume/quality is ok if a little quiet, am mostly still getting used to switching back to pda phones from a candy bar phone, they are very different on your ear!
Now i'm on 1.0.14 and i thought upgrading to 1.0.16 may fix my issues but that update is not available for me (Orange UK).

I think SE said that the .16 update was for certain carriers and not for the phone itself. And since SE refuses to release change logs we'll probably never know.
Okay so I just changed my SIM card with the brand new one that comes with it, and there's no change in volume... Talking to the tech guy he claims that on some phones it actually did make a difference. Hard to say what they're told to say and what actually happens though.
Thats weird, im getting my X10 on tuesday, and I currently have a desire, and the sound volume in the earpiece isnt that high, and also the ring volume isnt that high, I was hoping for better from the X10 ;-(

Volume hack possible?

I know on some other Android phone's (e.g. G1 http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f4/volume-increase-hack-found-18107/), a software modification has allowed for much higher volume.
Not sure if actually increases the speaker volume as well, or just through headphones?
+1 for the speaker!
Agree! The speaker is WAY too low!!!
/CK
+1 here too
It would be nice, the speaker is crazy quiet.
i wonder wot the reason was for them to keep it at that level of sound and is way to queit
Or it possible use the front speaker for avi/video/streaming?

It seems everyone has the low volume speakers.
I noticed that Angry Birds seems to be a little bit louder than other things.
Anyway, I highly urge everyone that thinks this is a problem to give this feedback to the HTC customer support. Obviously this is the only way to get an official fix for this quicker, if at all.
Wonder if the speaker can handle a increase in max volume.
Anyway, aren't there hidden service menus on the Desire HD that can be triggered with a phone code? In the service menus of a phone there are always some nice parameters to tweak.
I tried some general codes, but none of them seems to work (except the *#*#INFO#*#* of course, but that's a general hidden android menu... even works on the emulator)
until we get access to the rom via Bootloader, there is no general tweak we can do.
However, just for music, try PowerAmp from the market. It has a great pre-amp setting to boost the volume (be careful not to blow your speakers though)
We want increasement in the general speaker volume... Not just music

You can do that, but you will need a script to do that at every launch, since /system write is not permanent.
Furthermore, after each time you adb push the files, you need to restart mediaserver in order pull in the new settings.
Last but not least, you will need to modify the DHD audiopara, since the G2 might not work well.

I experienced the same, missing calls because the damn volume is just too low!
Also, when you use the speakers when having a phone call, you can't even hear the person unless you're in an absolutely quiet room... The same goes for music, youtube, navigation..... Anything!!!??!?

I returned mine because of the low speaker volume. I was missing 99% of calls because I couldn't hear the phone ringing. In my business I just can't afford to miss calls. As I sold my normal desire to get this phone I had to buy an Orange San Francisco to use till something else comes along.
I was playing with a friend's Nokia N8 & have to say the speaker quality & loundness is outstanding on it. Also used as a phone its much better than the DHD. Shame the OS is a bit dodgy.
speaker
I am not sure if you are speaking about speakers of DHD in general or just about external. Well, Ive sent back my DHD to Vodafone because call speaker was so useless that I could not even hear other person when I had TV on. Hopefully it was just one bad piece but its apparent that HTC fcked up DHD with poor quality speakers in general. I am waiting for my phone replacement and even when I know that it would be hard to say DHD goodbye I am afraid Ill have to if speaker quality will be that bad again

Why don't we use this... compile libaudioflinger and DSP Manager, in which we can set presets (you can +10 every channel of sound, so it comes out 10x louder).
Good luck compiling... I couldn't find an example
http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_frameworks_base <-- libaudioflinger is in /libs/ (yes it's default in Cyanogenmod)
http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_DSPManager DSP Manager android application, yes everyone should be able to compile this one

Sound too quiet, try this.

Hi all,
I've always felt that when playing music on my DHD that it's too quiet, when I've listened to music through my headphones I would say it's acceptable however when I've plugged my DHD into a HiFi or into my stereo in my car I could crank the volume to full control without it been deafening. I happen to find a fix yesterday by accident, I had my DHD plugged into my car stereo and the phone rang, I pulled the audio cable out and answered the phone, when I was done I put the cable back in and immediately I was like WTF just happened now, the music was much louder than what it was before I answered the phone, I would say it was about 30% louder.
I tested my theory by stopping the music and unplugging the cable, plugged the cable back in and started the music, while it was playing I opened the phone and simply dialled any random number and ended the call immediately, when it went back to the music it was most certainly much louder. I've tried it several times now and every time it makes it much louder than what it was before I make a call, I can now no longer turn the stereo full blast as it is simply too loud, just by turning it up to half way I would say it's the equivalent of what it was before when I had it turned up to the maximum.
I'm using Poweramp and I don't know if it's got anything to do with that, I will test it with the built in music player and see what it does. I originally downloaded Poweramp as I thought that the built in music player may be the problem.
i'll repet what you do and post some results... really want a louder volumen in headphones. I plugged my headphone in a Wildfire and it's incredible louder, no talking about an ipod! last week in a party i was ashamed when my friend put off his $50 cell phone and i plugged mine on stereo, so low volume....
wtf, that's true.. really don't understand what the phone turns on!! probably the same thing that volume boost turns on!!

Interesting find.
I've noticed a couple of ROMS which suggest better audio volume by 20%.
For example this one. (Speaker Boost +20%)
So somehow, somewhere the bug or issue has been fixed or improved.

Not really, i'm using that rom right now, and what it makes is improve SPEAKER volume, not from headphone. I made my tests in Android Revolution rom and can confirm that headphone is as quiet as stock rom, and it is improved by the "call trick"!
Thanks for sharing! I was experimenting a bit, and it seems like the simplest way to boost the volume is to make a call while music is already playing. The call MUST connect though, or the volume will revert to normal levels. Tested with Winamp.
Maybe have one of the dev's ask to look into this.
If this is different from the already increased speaker volume output, it probably is a bug that can be fixed / feature that can be 'un-featured'
works fine
I had similar experience with my laptop. When listening a mp3 file, the sound coming out from my laptop seems like no effects, standard sound without bass and treble effect. Have to play a movie file first together and stop the.movie make the song hear with the effect.
I believe this issue coming from my sound driver. Using another OS in same laptop. The sound play normally with no issue.
For our Android, it's about the sound driver too?
well well, i just noticed that in the Android Revolution 4 (leaked gingerbread based), the sound is improved by default, no needing the call workaround, looks like HTC fixed the strange bug for the next version...
i just wanted to share!
edit: if someone could try to confirm it, i'll appreciate! =o)

I had the same problem, go to the Market and download "Volume Ace".
MarkieSA, you're an accident hero.
I noticed sometimes my DHD volume suddenly were loud . If I restart the phone, it will go low . I couldn't find out how to make it loud again until reading your post. I'm using PowerAmp too . I think it plays a role in this case.
Thank you for this great finding.
Really useful little trick for 2.2 users, especially for peeps using stock ROM's without the 20% boost via custom kernels. I had tried some of the volume boost type apps before rooting but all they do is invert the phase of one of the stereo channels. All this does is give you a very tinny mono output which is no use to say the least.
