Customize the E-Mail Setup flow in Wm 6.5 - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
I am trying to understand if there is a way to customize the E-Mail setup flow in WM 6.5 (and 6.1), in particular removing the step where the device is trying to check for email settings on the web. The option/step I am trying to remove is called "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet" and it appears immediately after you enter the email address and password.
Does anyone know if it would be possible to remove this step from the process and force the client to just look in the local database of email accounts? I found this check useless anyway
Thank you in advance

can't connect to any POP3/SMTP site that requires the use of SSL.

I recently got this email from att yahoo:
Dear AT&T Yahoo! Member,
We're making some security improvements to your AT&T Yahoo! service. These changes will affect members who send or receive email from a desktop or mobile client program, such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird.
To help us ensure the security of your email, you will need to change the settings on your desktop or mobile email client program.
you may take the following steps to change the settings on your desktop or mobile email client program:
Open your email client program.
Locate the email account settings for your particular client.
Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.
Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.
Confirm the above settings then click OK.
I already tried my first comandment "Thou shalt not ask before search!" but alas I can't seem to find how to change ports on e-mail set up. I'm running wm6 but I don't know if wm5 had this abbilty as I didn't need it then. Any help would be great!
So, mabey I should have posted under wm6 & titled the post photon question. At the very least somebody would reply to flame me or something. lol
I had the same problem. Turned out to be the operator. They do not offer full Internet services, only WAP and unencrypted e-mail (i.e. no SSL). The problem sorted itself out after switching to another operator . . .
Add a colon then (port #, no spaces) after each in/Out server. That is how I have it set up with my 8525/ wm5
Thanks, I'll give that a shot. If not I guess I can open a hot mail account and forward email till att fixes the auto set up in August (per the "help" desk)

Difficulties with the email client in WM6.1

I'm trying to set up a gmail account on my phone as IMAP (something I could do in windows mobile 6.0) but there's no option to manually configure it that I can find, it automatically skips the checkbox "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet" and just forces POP on me, is there a way I can get around this and set it up as an IMAP client?
Misspell your account to something like [email protected], then you can do your manual setup. When done, go back and spell gmail correctly.

WM 6.1 Exchange Server Email Manual Connection instead

Hi,
Did a search for this type of problem but couldnt find anything. I have a HTC Diamond WM6.1 from Orange in UK.
I have successfully configured it to use Activesync & Webmail but when I configure it to connect to my works exchange server (using their webmail address at is states) I cannot set that connection to manual as I could with my webmail. It therefore connects every few minutes by itself and remains connected.
In Messaging, I clicked New Account and followed the instructions for POP mail (Gmail) and there is an option to schedule the send/receive but this is not the same for the "Outlook Email" option.
Am I missing something??? I dont think so.. is it possible to modify this through registry?
Thanks.
Nathan
I stumbled on this yesterday, it may help you get to the settings you're after.
If the link doesn't work just try googling "activesync dummy server fix".

Exchange email is different from POP/IMAP.
You need to use Activesync on the phone to change those settings (which affect email, calendar events, tasks and contacts which are synced with the exchange server via Activesync over the air):
- Start->Programs->Activesync
- Soft right key (Menu)->Schedule
Then you can change the "Peak times:" and "Off-peak times:" settings from "As item arrive" (which is the default pushed email setting) to "Manually".
Cheers!!
NOTE: You can also quickly enable/disable push email (which is the "As item arrive" setting mentioned above) by going to "Settings " tab in TF3D, then tap on "Communications" and finally use "Microsoft Direct Push" ON/OFF to do the job.
Hats off guys..! Thanks. I didn't know that Activesync played a part when I wasnt connected to the laptop.
All sorted!!

HD2 mail orange france

Hello,
I have a problem to configure my mail on my HD2(Windows Mobile 6.5)
My operator is SFR but i got 2 mails oranges.
I want to receive one copy of all the mails on my phone.
But i can't find preferences to configure IMAP or POP on my portail orange
I'm on Win XP and i can't use the Manager for Windows Mobile devices because it's just on Vista or Seven.
And i don't know if a server exchange exist on orange.
Help me please if you receive your mail with the direct push option
Help me please
Where are the french's users ??????????
Hello, and welcome!
The first thing we need to know is what you want to do? Do you want to synchronize your mails between your HD2 and your computer? Or receive your emails on your HD2, even when you are away?
1. you want to synchronize your mails between your HD2 and your computer:
You need to install ActivSync 4.5 on your computer (you can download it on microsoft website), and to have Outlook installed on your computer aswell. After that, you can configure the synchronisation through ActivSync.
2. you want to receive your emails on your HD2:
You have to configure your email account on the HD2, go to the "Email" tab, select "Menu" and "Ajouter", "Autre" and fill all fields. For Orange' emails, you can configure both POP3 and IMAP account (pop.orange.fr or imap.orange.fr for incoming messages, and smtp.orange.fr for outgoing messages). If you don't manage to send emails with this parameters, try smtp.sfr.fr as outgoing messages server.
Hope this help you.
Laurent
Thanks you for your answer.
I want to know how we configure pop or imap on the portail orange
I will try with imap because i want to leave a copy on the serveur.
I never test imap configuration yet because i've try to configure with the "Email" tab,"Menu","Ajouter", "Orange" because the ROM version is an Orange and i'm with a SFR operator.
I think it's that the problem.
I try tomorrow and i will give you some news.
Ok, give a try and let me know, but 3 things:
1. You say you want to configure your account as an imap account in order to leave a copy on the server; but you can leave a copy even with a pop account (this option is selected by default in advanced settings, normally...). The advantage of imap is that all your folders are synchronized with the server, that means even emails sent from your HD2 will be on Orange portal, emails deleted on your HD2 will be deleted on the server, etc...
2. You have to configure manually all the settings of your account, because the configuration wizard allows you to configure only a pop account by default if you select the automatic configuration (a least for Orange)
3. The last thing is that you have to run the Connexions Wizard to configure your device with SFR parameters, because your ROM is an Orange one, so datas settings are for Orange.
Good luck !
I do a reset and i've try to configure the connexion (Démarer=>Paramètre=>Connexions=>Configuration de connexion.)
But the assistant failed.
I would to download the latest official ROM in the HTC website but i tell me a SerialNumer and when i enter mine i says it's not good
I think it's because the HD2 with ORANGE.
I can't reconfigure and i think i must do a hardSPL ? I'm correct??
Hi, i download the latest ROM, and i will do a HARD Spl before.
For who want i find a link for french ROM. i bought this phone with an orange ROM and my serial number doesn't work on the HTS support.
IT'S JUST FOR HD2 french !!
1.66.406.1 ROM FRE

1.48.406.1 ROM FRE
http://blog.canardwc.com/rom-htc-hd2-1-48-406-1-fre.html
I give you some new with my mail problem later.
Thanks i receive my mail by the pop protocol
I don't resolve my problem lol
But i think it's impossible to configure mail on the portal orange like in gmail.
See you

New HD2, troubles with pop3/smtp email setup. [RESOLVED]

Resolved. Seems like the email server want to be imap when accessed by HD2. I have it setup and working as pop3 on ALL my other email clients and it works. It finally worked after I tried it as imap on the HD2.
-----
I'm having trouble setting up an email account to check. I have all my settings correct and I've checked this a dozen times. I always get this message:
Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again.

The status says 'Error Sychronizing'.
I've also tried changing the 'Network connection' in the Advanced Server Setting of the Email Setup.
The pop3/smtp server is just an ip address, but I don't think that should matter. It works in all other programs and Android.
Any ideas? This is really frustrating since this should be a basic function of a smartphone.
i guess you are setting your email thru SENSELESS...been there before, but guess what?
you have to set your mails in windows otherwise it won't work !!! go to start, email and set your setting in wm mode (remember wm 6.1? same interface!) hehe
don't forget to check all the dropdown menus
as i had experienced, setting emails is very easy in palm and android(nexus one)
here its a bit complicated

I actually did set it up through the 'not pretty' email app. I did get my personal email account which is imap/smtp to work. However, I rather have my work email account working..
I'll check my personal email account through pop3/smtp servers in a bit.
what server does your employer use? hotmail?
We host our own email server.
I thought it was the fact that mobile outlook didn't like the pop3/smtp server as an IP, so I mapped wm hosts with a name for that IP. Opera will pick up on the hosts change and go to the right place. Unfortunately, mobile outlook still gives me the same error.
I was able to log into imap and pop3 server for my personal email, which is on another server.
