I'm trying to set up a gmail account on my phone as IMAP (something I could do in windows mobile 6.0) but there's no option to manually configure it that I can find, it automatically skips the checkbox "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet" and just forces POP on me, is there a way I can get around this and set it up as an IMAP client?
Misspell your account to something like [email protected], then you can do your manual setup. When done, go back and spell gmail correctly.

I'm new here, and I go to Comm Manager on my Touch, and Microsoft Direct Push is turned off, and I mean greyed out. So, how do I set up Outlook, and/or my Gmail for direct push? Now, my data keeps randomly turning off, I love this phone, but sometimes it is bipolar.
The Microsoft Direct Push for email is for when you have setup and Exchange server connection via Activesync.
For instance, I have Microsoft Exchange at my work, and I got the webmail server address setup in the Activesync for my Touch, and now when my work account gets an email, I get it almost at the exact same time on my phone.
Gmail by itself doesn't do direct-push, it can do POP3 or IMAP. So you can setup the POP or IMAP connection via adding an email account through the messaging on your phone, but you'll have to specify when you want the phone to go out and check for new mail. There are a few options out there that let you add your gmail settings to some websites that offer the Microsoft Exchange server connection, some free, some paid, and you can do it that way. Just gotta do some searching buddy.
Hi,
Did a search for this type of problem but couldnt find anything. I have a HTC Diamond WM6.1 from Orange in UK.
I have successfully configured it to use Activesync & Webmail but when I configure it to connect to my works exchange server (using their webmail address at is states) I cannot set that connection to manual as I could with my webmail. It therefore connects every few minutes by itself and remains connected.
In Messaging, I clicked New Account and followed the instructions for POP mail (Gmail) and there is an option to schedule the send/receive but this is not the same for the "Outlook Email" option.
Am I missing something??? I dont think so.. is it possible to modify this through registry?
Thanks.
Nathan
I stumbled on this yesterday, it may help you get to the settings you're after.
If the link doesn't work just try googling "activesync dummy server fix".

Exchange email is different from POP/IMAP.
You need to use Activesync on the phone to change those settings (which affect email, calendar events, tasks and contacts which are synced with the exchange server via Activesync over the air):
- Start->Programs->Activesync
- Soft right key (Menu)->Schedule
Then you can change the "Peak times:" and "Off-peak times:" settings from "As item arrive" (which is the default pushed email setting) to "Manually".
Cheers!!
NOTE: You can also quickly enable/disable push email (which is the "As item arrive" setting mentioned above) by going to "Settings " tab in TF3D, then tap on "Communications" and finally use "Microsoft Direct Push" ON/OFF to do the job.
Hats off guys..! Thanks. I didn't know that Activesync played a part when I wasnt connected to the laptop.
All sorted!!

Nathan
Hi there,
I've tried searching for this but can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I want to be able to download all my hotmail emails to my HTC Touch HD, but currently theres a limit to 50 on my hotmail account.
Is there anyway of doing this? I'm sure I used to be able to do it on a previous version of windows mobile but can't seem to now. It seems so bizaare that you can't, as I often want to go back to old emails, and don't always want to go through the web to get these.
Maybe there's a better email application, or even outlook for windows mobile which I could use?
Thanks for any help,
Tom
try setting up your email account using Outlook Mobile's POP3 settings (pop3.live.com / smtp.live.com). during the setup process don't use the real email address @hotmail, or @msn or @live, use @hotmaill, @msnn or @livee. once you've completed the setup you can go back to change to the correct email account name. the only downside is you lose the push feature. your phone will poll your email account based on the interval you select during setup. i'm using this setup for my MSN account, where email arrives every 5 minutes duirng the day and every 30 minutes in the evenings.
Thanks mate, thats perfect. Don't need to have push email anyway.
Cheers, Tom

Hotmail account on HD
Hi all,
Anyway of getting my hotmail account to go through the Outlook on the phone, WITHOUT having my account on Messenger?
It seems you can only have one account setup on messenger, as as my messenger account.
Now when you setup messenger using a hotmail account, you have the option to get all emails going through the outlook, and download to the phone as normal.
BUT I dont use a hotmail account for my messenger, and my main email accoutn is a hotmail account... hope this doesnt confuse you! But my messenger is a "dead account" and any emails sent to that email go no where.
So If i try setup my hotmail account in the outlook, put in all the setting like email address, password ect, it just takes me to hotmail.com on my Opera browser, but does not save the settings in outlook?
Sorry for confusion!
Not sure I've followed you correctly.
I also don't use messenger but I do have hotmail on my device in emails tab. I used Windows Live to set it up which is on most HD roms. Once you've gone through process of setting up and sync'ing your hotmail account will appear in emails tab like any other email account
Ah yeah, but the problem is, Windows Live just like messenger only lets you have one accoutn setup at once.
So I set my hotmail up with windows live, my emails appear. Thats good.
But then it also sets Messenger up, with the hotmail account, which I dont want, if you get me?
you might be able to setup multiple hotmail accounts using the method listed here. i use this to access 2 msn accounts and 1 live account. not push, but works just as well.

I've merged both these threads due to their simularity
Resolved. Seems like the email server want to be imap when accessed by HD2. I have it setup and working as pop3 on ALL my other email clients and it works. It finally worked after I tried it as imap on the HD2.

I'm having trouble setting up an email account to check. I have all my settings correct and I've checked this a dozen times. I always get this message:
Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again.

The status says 'Error Sychronizing'.
I've also tried changing the 'Network connection' in the Advanced Server Setting of the Email Setup.
The pop3/smtp server is just an ip address, but I don't think that should matter. It works in all other programs and Android.
Any ideas? This is really frustrating since this should be a basic function of a smartphone.
i guess you are setting your email thru SENSELESS...been there before, but guess what?
you have to set your mails in windows otherwise it won't work !!! go to start, email and set your setting in wm mode (remember wm 6.1? same interface!) hehe
don't forget to check all the dropdown menus
as i had experienced, setting emails is very easy in palm and android(nexus one)
here its a bit complicated

I actually did set it up through the 'not pretty' email app. I did get my personal email account which is imap/smtp to work. However, I rather have my work email account working..
I'll check my personal email account through pop3/smtp servers in a bit.
what server does your employer use? hotmail?
We host our own email server.
I thought it was the fact that mobile outlook didn't like the pop3/smtp server as an IP, so I mapped wm hosts with a name for that IP. Opera will pick up on the hosts change and go to the right place. Unfortunately, mobile outlook still gives me the same error.
I was able to log into imap and pop3 server for my personal email, which is on another server.
All my other mail accounts sync perfectly on my HD2 except my outlook exchange account which I have yet to access. All the setting (domain, mail server) are correct and my co-workers who use android, and iphone have no problem logging into their work email. What's the deal? The error message reads, "a network or server error is currently preventing your device from syncing".
I about blew my brains out trying to set up my exchange account on my HD2. The most frustrating part is that all of the settings were correct. What finally got it set up and syncing? Hitting "sync" over and over again. It took me about an hour and a half of checking and unchecking boxes until everything was finally synced for the first time. Now that it's finally set up, it's running just fine.
Not sure if it's a glitch, or just an ActiveSync thing, but it took me a while before everything synced correctly.

I have the same problem and did everything in my power to get it to work. The main problem with me and the company's exchange server are the Certificates are not allowing the device to sync correctly. Since we are using WMo I guess it is more difficult to overrule the Security Certificates that by the way are expired and need to be updated.
Long story short…”I gave up” and only use the POP3 line that only gives you access to emails instead of Contacts, calendar, etc…
I think all of you probably need to talk to your Admin about getting a security certificate to install on your phone.
Setting up Exchange on the HD2 is simple and works for me every time... Our server requires me to have a certificate and I've reset my phone about 5 times and set up my outlook email with no probs every single time... But to get it to sync I have to install the Security Certificate. Any secure exchange server with a smart Admin requires one to access the server from the outside...
If you are putting in the correct user, pass, domain and server address, then that is probably it. Also make sure you Data Connection is not disabled in Settings/Wireless Controls.
Hope this helps...
