offline GPS for Touch 3g? - Touch 3G General

I would like to know if theres a gps program which i can use offline with the built in gps of my touch 3g. right now i use google maps which always tries to connect to the internet.
Does anyone know a well working alternative?

Check this: http://wiki.trekbuddy.net/index.php/Main_Page

offline gps?
Of course there are tens of them..
OFFROAD? ONROAD??
You do not mean Offline GPS..
You mean internet Offline GPS, I am sure..
The below are onroad ones;
TomTom, Garmin, IGO8 and many others with their own mapdatas...
Offroad ones;
GPSTuner, Trekbuddy and so goes on....
You may choose one of them depends to what city/ country you live in?

thx for answering

i wanted to ask for non-internet-based gps programs, a program which doesnt need an internet connection.
Trekbuddy is Java based but for now a bit complicated (im dumb in that topic), GPSTuner looks easier so i would go for that one for now.
I live in south Germany (near Swiss boarder) so if you can suggest another nice and easy to handle im thankful.
Btw can we use Garmin on the Touch 3g with the built-in gps?

Understood. You can use TomTom for example, which is a full navigation software. Works great! TrekBuddy is quite tricky. Just found it on the web - but did not understand it neither

I downloaded TomTom "Version 7.450.9028_repack3-qvga-black", is the Touch 3g qvga anyways? ^^"
Btw I noticed that there are no maps included, maybe you know where to find a decent one for Germany??

Hello
I would suggest you to find the tomtom version 7.915.9196 (from HTC Iolite) wich works fine for the touch 3g.

I'm using mapking + Malaysia map.

thats the kind of program i mean, easy and simple.
Too bad it's maps are only for Asia, what I need is western Europe/ Germany.
thx anyways

It sounds like you have all got various form of GPS software working.
I have just got my new HTC Touch 3G on Orange UK and want to run some logging gps software.
Can you advise the corrrect settings for the GPS com port and Baud rate.
At the moment I do not seem able to talk to the GPS and the manual is not helpfull at all.
I am trying Com 4 at 4800 Baud which appears not to work..
Any suggestions ?
Thankyou

What software are you using for your GPS? You need to have a software( pre installed when you bought your HTC 3G or bought separately)
I am using Garmin Mobile XT which came with my unit when I bought it.
Then you have to buy maps too, I have Thailand Map (also pre installed)
and Philippines map, downloaded free from website.

Im using the same like you, Com 4 and 4800.
I use google maps and my GPS works fine.
Dont underaestimate the "do it outside" rule, inside a room, even in front of the window i wouldnt ever get a gps signal, once outside it works well and fast.

1. GPS Logging Software: GPS Cycle Computer (freeware)
2. COM and BAUD are correct - run QuickGPS before! This will download some basic information via your GSM-Cells about where you are more or less. Then the GPS Signal will be found even quicker.

Try COM 4 at 57600 Baud.
Works for IGo 8 and Navigon 7.4

I use McGuider 2009. very accurate and a quick fix.

<-- have a prepaid card, dont want to risk

No Internet mapping software
Try terracrosser.com
You download google or yahoo maps to your PC, which then creates the map file. Transfer this to your PCC and away you go . . .

how to get gps on wing like dash ?

I find it funny that the dash is able to get the gps working on google maps and when it comes to the wing (MUMZZZ)the word.!
can someone help me if there is a logical answer and solution to my dilemma ...........
this is wrong in sooooooooo many ways. first, neither the dash (HTC excalibur) nor the wing (HTC Herald/Atlas) have built-in GPS.
Google maps uses data, does it not? So theoretically, anywhere you have a data connection, you can use google maps.
If by gps you mean an external gps, it's only a matter of tethering your gps to your phone, which is relatively self-explanatory
ok
so how is the dash able to track location on google maps also searches for gps and is successful . unless a buddy of mine has a special dash ..
i believe google just implemented a new service that uses cellphone tower triangulation to determine an approximate location. does it show your friends location as a dot or a dot over a larger, lighter colored dot?
I was going to post this yesterday, but didnt get a chance to..
GPS on the wing is NOT possible, UNLESS using a gps device.
THOUGH, google maps (the newest version) has a way of attempting to find your location without GPS. It uses cell phone towers to triangulate your posistion. This is not as accurate as GPS though, it can be anywhere dead on your posistion, or it could be 1500 meters off. it just depends on the amount of cell coverage in the area.
i dont know
if their using triangulation off of towers to get a position how com it doesn't work on my wing ? I have the new version of gmaps there has to be a way to implement a gps program into the wing come on people lets put our heads together something good has to come out off this

ofcourse you can "implement a gps program" just connect teh wing to a gps-mouse und use one of these:
- tomtom

- navigator
- destinator

Tomtom dropping GPS

Using TomTom v7.450 (build 9028) the device can work fine for hours, but sometimes I start Tomtom and it will find a GPS signal and then immediately drop it again.
When I look at the satellite information, it will do this...
1. No GPS device!
2. Poor signal, are you indoors?
3. Built-in GPS receiver
4. No GPS device!
5. Poor signal, are you indoors?
6. Built-in GPS receiver
7. No GPS device!
and repeat..
You can view a video showing this effect

Hi, I've the same problem on my Blackstone, GPS works well for days bu from today the GPS signal result discontinuous with any navigation software like Tomtom(various versions), Trackypro and iGO8...any idea? Thanks
I had the similar problem when I first installed TomTom. Which settings are you using? Because I used "built-in GPS" for TomTom and had the above problem. When I changed it to "Other NMEA GPS" with baud rate at 11200 ()or whatever the max is + COM4 then gps started working like a charm. Since then no signal drops, no lag and very quick fix. Not sure if it is just by chance or is it a real fix for the above problem, but worth trying as its working for me. However, it has been 2 days only. Not sure if after a while I will have this problem or not. I am using Tom Tom 7.910 with maps 6.75.
Can You try to set the hardware port from <None> to COM9? Seems work better, the GPS signal still present...but for now I'm at home
I have more or less the same problem !
Using TomTom v7.450 (build 9028) the device works fine the 1st week, but now, I start Tomtom it xan't find GPS device !
I tried to reinstall all without success...
I also tried all the COM available !
using tomtom 7 with NMEA com 4 max baud rate. Works just fine. 8 or 9 sats locked on constantly in open areas
I'm having the same problem, although I don't have TomTom 7. But it doesn't seem to be just TomTom that's having trouble finding the GPS (and when it does, it'll never get a fix).
The Google Maps application also gives me the "No GPS found" attitude.
I've installed the HTC GPS Tool, which does seem to find a bunch of satellites, but they all stay no-fix-reddish.
Are there any guidelines on how to setup the GPS on this thing? I find it a bit strange that my settings menu only lists an option "External GPS", and no "Internal/Built-In GPS".
Can confirm that the dropping of GPS is in other applications.
I use zürich map from Lonely Planet (sure its form 2003) and it will drop the signal in the open.
Have a feeling its internal on our devices.
One possibility is A-GPS.
It is Disabled by default, but it is possible that with tools like HD Tweak or Advanced Config Tool, you, even by being unaware of it, you activated (or better : enabled) it.
To me, it was a winner : after re-disabling A-GPS, my GPS started to be stable again, no matter what port I choosed and how I configured the Navigator program.
Give it a try, could be the solution that works for you
Hi there,
I've just picked up my lovely HTC Touch HD - I'd like to buy the TomTom 7 and the correct maps to go with it to allow it to work.
Can someone please tell me where I can go to stick my Visa card details into and buy please! i'm pretty confused on the TT website and on here there's allsorts of version numbers etc mentioned!
I'd just like to have a stable running TT on my Touch!
Any chance of also having the US & Canada maps working as well as the UK maps ?
Thanks !
Dennis! West London UK!
This is not a TomTom issue. I have same problem with IGo and VisualGPSce.
I use to resolve this issue this way (in IGo or VisualGPS) : I change the baudrate in GPS configuration. Switching 19200 to 38400, or reverse, or whatever : the GPS locks and is stable after few baudrate switches.
Theres some reports that the default "sleep" timeout for GPS is 1 second. Apparently the Microsoft Intermediate Driver only updates every 1 second so it could just miss it and go to sleep!
Try changing registry entry to 2000 (milliseconds)...
HKLM->system->currentcontrolset->GPSIntermediate Driver->Drivers-> SleepOnNoData

Already did it (currently set to 2500). But changes nothing (even after soft reset) : GPS keeps deconnecting/reconnecting as described (not every time; one in a while..).
Thanks anyways !
Just out of interest, do you have MobileJustice installed by any chance?
Absolutly not. Nor any software of this type, nor any software who can possibly take GPS in background..
I had the problem of TomTom getting satelites and then dropping them and saying it couldn't find the gps.
Disabling agps (quick gps) via advance config seemed to sort out the problem
AGPS is *not* quickGPS in my understanding. But this is unclear. For a proof, AGPS comes disabled by default, but quickGPS works out of the box. Can someone who knows for sure, precisely state if AGS and quickGPS are the same thing or not ?
I have disabled AGPS also with HD tweak (but quickGPS stills work..), and I have regulary (2 out of 3 times) this problem.
I had the same problem. Disabling the AGPS seems to have worked but I will wait for the data to expire before confirming.
The problem seems to be when I have poor GPS reception AND poor GSM. They seem to be calling upon each other for corrections but never resolve.
If this is the solution I will just rely on QuickGPS alone which has worked fine for years with TTN6.
Edit: I can now confirm disabling AGPS solved my problem.
had TTN7 running for a few days now.
Can't find the built in GPS. Having to set it to other Bluetooth GPS Receiver.
A bit hit and miss with signal / getting a fix.
I have turned off AGPS as well. Going to try out some of the settings you all have put up tomorrow.

Assisted GPS Pharos?

The Pharos is supposed to have AGPS. Do they mean QuickGPS or is there really AGPS on it? Where can I find it on the Pharos?
I have the WM6.0 Dutch version.
when i turn on tomtom in my house it says im in the location of the nearest gsm beacon...before i have a satellite fix, thats assisted GPS i think...
quick gps only has the trajectories of satellites in the "local" sky so the gps chip can get a fix quicker
Strange, nothing happens when I start TomTom.
Can you give me your settings in the register:
HKLM>Software>HTC>SUPL AGPS>
i checked but no such key
wat is the setting of your key?
Keysetting in HKLM>Software>HTC>SUPL AGPS> is:
(Default) (value not set)
EnableAGPS 1
EnableGPSSmartMode 1
GPSMode 2
NumberFixes 389AC9FF
QosAccuracy 32 (50)
QosPerformance 59 (89)
ServerIP 195.207.101.126
Serverport 1E6C (7788)
TimeBetweenFixes 1
When I first started with the Pharos there was no AGPS, also not in the registry the Supl AGPS. I found a registry-entry for the Pharos on this site and put it on the Pharos. When I start 'Advanced Config' from Schaft I can see under GPS that AGPS is enabled.
When I start TomTom 7.9 there's no start of GPRS. Also my GPRS monitor sees no action. So I presume AGPS is not working.
Maybe I need some dll drivers, I don't know. Can somebody help?
you have a confusing story
first you talk about GPS and then about GPRS
these are 2 different things
GPRS is your data connection (in case EDGE is not available)
GPS is global positioning system and i didnt know tomtom 7.9 was out, i use 6.
if you do a simple search on the phorum you can see that tomtom 7.9 causes a few problems i suugest you read that!
my advice would be to revert back to 6 .. works great on the pharos
Maybe I'm confused. I thought Assited-GPS uses GPRS to make contact with the gsm beacons and so make a faster fix with these beacons. Am I wrong about that?
The builtin GPS from the Pharos works fine but is not very fast with the first fix. I thought AGPS would help making a faster fix.
I already had TomTom 7.4 and know 7.9 (cracked version). Works fine on the Pharos. I will look for the problems with 7.9 on the forum.
Thanks
hmmm yeah makes sense we do need a server to relay the info... but ive looked it up
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_devices_with_Assisted_GPS
our device is on the list... but i dont think i have a server setting... and my gps (tomtom) doesnt have to have a connection to the internet.
strange but fun to find out how it works...
TomTom does not use the AGPS function. Enable quickgps to do this before you use your navigation software (TomTom). It can automatically download the satellite info for you which is good for about 2 days. You can update through your cellular connection if you have data on your plan or through activesync. TomTom 7 will work without using the AGPS function but it will take longer to find a fix on the satellites. TomTom 7 is required if you want to use the internal gps receiver with TomTom. TomTom 6 does not work without some hacks.
I think that Google Maps do use the AGPS function. It is much faster to find the coordinates than fx TomTom and other GPS software i've tried, so i think that a program needs to be developed with use of the agps function if it uses it..

Same here had problems inside the TT7 but outside works like a charm.
Run app called QuickGPS, installed by default (you should have icon in programs). It downloads small file with actual settings of GPS satelites. My X1 couldnt fix position too, but after updating this db it works like charm. I get position in less than 30s
it's not a x1 gps thing that it don't work indoors thats a std gps thing
i use tomtom and it never have any problem

that's because you haven't enable GPS in Google Maps, but instead are using Cell Tower estimations for your location.

GPS X9601

GPS problems
Ok so I have a North American GSM x9501...
Never used the GPS (Telenav isn't available to Canadian residense). This device is unlocked and NOT purchased from Rogers...
Downloaded Google maps, tried to use GPS and it wouldn't work. Set the settings manually Com4 57600 baud... It says searching for satalites, and has some HUGE number (54357734578) in brackets... GPS doesn't work.
Installed the HTC GPS tool, looks like GPS data is coming in, but can't get a fix. Then tried to use GPSgate, and it says GPS data is coming in but cannot get fix. Both of these two apps can't find any satalites.
Does anyone know what is up?

yep, go out in middle of a field or open Terrace or any place where you can see the sky above you head directly and then start google maps with GPS or HTC GPS tool or GPS gate etc , wait 3-5 min and then it should have fix...
cheers
I've given is some time... Probably over 5 minutes...
It's just odd, I have lots of experiencing using GPS software and devices. It looks like it should be working, the only odd behaviour is:
1) It finds no satalites
and
2) Google Maps says "Seeking Satalites (3874732644)" which is odd, because theres not that many GPS satalites, lol.
Change the Baud Rate to 9600 and see whether it will work.
Tried different baud rates.
Yesterday I let it sit for 15 minutes on google maps until finally it said there was no reception...
And I know I have reception because I was outside. Both my TytN II and HP iPaq have no trouble aquiring fix's...
download free VISUALGPS CE and install. Then connect it to COM4 and press start.
See the NMEA log monitor section. You should see lot's of data, if not, your GPS might be bad.
I'm unsure if your 9501 will work with the ROM's we use in Europe to make calls, and have GPS enabled.. If it's OK, I would flash Thai Hugo's Age of Reason and check again your GPS.
I'm using the factory ROM for the X9501 (Which does support GPS off the bat).
I used the HTC tool, and it looked like NMEA data was going through...

On the HTC tool there is option to see the satellites , check if its has any satellites on red color, if so keep the shift out in terrace or garden until 3 satellite color changes to green , have patience....
if it does not show any satellite on the HTC tool then probably you need to flash the rom with some new rom from the forum ..
Before you do that make a copy of your Stock/original rom ..see forum for instruction
PS: Since you have the stock / orginal rom X9501....would you do me a favour and check if you connect to head set and on Windows mobile side WM6, can you record a message and then play back and you can hear your self back .... if so , can try to dump/export the registry settings for HKLocalMachine (HKLM) to a xml ot reg file and then copy / upload the xml/reg file here .

Nope , the issue is we cannot use the head set in WM6 as the mic on Head set does not work....so we have to use the speaker phone and its not good for phone calls private or business.
I would appreciate if you can help us to resolve the issue , if you can dump the reg keys for HKLM / Drivers/inbuilt ... it might give us some direction.
Appreciate your support.
