LAN over USB not working - Networking

Hi,
I have a HTC S710 (Vox) and a laptop with Ubuntu running on it.
When i connect the smartphone to my laptop with USB, it shows up as a Generic RNDIS device and connects.
If i run zaTelnet pro on the phone and SSH to the ip of my laptop (on the USB network device), i'm able to connect.
But when i put the same ip address in the address bar of Internet Explorer on my phone, it says i can't connect because my 'internet connection is not configured', i guess it wants to connect through wifi or something.
Btw: I have apache running on the laptop, so i want to get the webpage from my laptop on my phone through usb connection.
Thanks,
Rubberducky

Bump?
I've also restarted the apache server after i connected the phone, no difference.

settings->connections->connections->advanced->select network
choose my hone network or something like that not being your isp
in the dropdown box's

Sorry to sound stupid, but i can't find connections->connections.
I've gone through all available items in the connections menu, but there's nothing with an 'advanced' option?
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

well i don't own a vox
but all devices with wm i've used
i open the start menu
i click settings
i click the conections tab
i click connections icon
i click advanced tab
i click select networks button
and i get a window with the 2 dropdown buttons

Are you sure you're not talking about a pocket pc?

It's been a bit since I had my smartphone out (blackjack), but I think there are options for the connection in pocket ie. Check the menu and see.

I've unchecked the autodetect setting setting, changed the connection to Internet, Work, WAP, Secured WAP, none work...
Any other possibilities?

ActiveSync Over WIFI

ActiveSync Over WIFI - does anyone know if this is possible.
I use WIFI at home on my XDAII for the internet, but would like to Sync it with my laptop without having to drag the cable home (or buy another usb cable)
Any ideas ?
Cheers
Yes, sure you could do it! Just make sure ActiveSync Connection settings on your desktop PC include Ethernet (right click on ActiveSync icon on the taskbar, choose Connection Settings and click on Allow network). Then, run ActiveSync on XDA-II and choose same 'synchronise via Network' setting - there is one on the 'Advanced' tab I think (can't say exactly, as my wife plays Lines on it right now ) - just type in your PC NETBIOS name (I guess it will be there already if you connected via USB before). I've tried it and it worked straight away (although takes few secs more to connect).

YOU BEUT ! I'D KISS YOU ... if
1. you were female
2. you were good looking
3. you were in close vacinity!
I had to run active sync, go to tools > Options > Server
And add "//myname" and untick SSL
However, my WIFI network card is set to MOBILE WEB GPRS (for IE and MSN, inbox etc) and it wanted WAP network GPRS so tried to dial up.
I changed the WIFI card to be WORK instead of INTERNET and it worked great.
Not sure if I have WORK and INTERNET set up correctly, it is basically how it came setup for GPRS access. But I don't mind changing it over now and then unless someone knows a better way?
(interesting that I managed to do an o2 Active update via the WIFI card! and not WAP GPRS - something I can't do while connected via USB? but can surf via USB )
Anyway... RESULT ! cheers
Well, obviously not female (while nothing is impossible in modern world - you could change sex, not only ROM version in your XDA ). As for the Wi-Fi card setup - it's quite simple, you'd better set it to 'Work' always unless you are connecting from Starbucks, and then change properties of 'work' connection, checking 'Connects to Internet' box and entering your proxy address. All these 'ISP' and 'Work' settings seemed to be pretty confusing to me first time until I understood how it works. You could not browse network through an USB cable (a mystery to me, since it's a normal PPP connection!), so Wi-Fi is probably the best option for all tasks - synchronisation, browsing etc.
Thanks for your help, I'll have a play

ppc (using USB activesync cable) to access the internet thru LAN?

i have an i-mate Jasjar wm5, I am using USB activesync cable to connect my device to my desktop PC. I would like to access the internet using LAN-DSL in my office.
Any idea or suggestions on how to do it?
Suggestions, insights, or any kind of guidance is highly appreciated.
unless you have set it to block it
then your device connected to activesync will allways have the same
lan network access as the pc
you prob have to change connection in settings->connection->connection advantage and pick mynetwork rather then my isp

thanks for the quick reply. activesync (v4.5) is on the exceptions list of windows firewall, hence it is not blocked.
My Work Network connection settings (modem and VPN) is empty. do we have to input any settings on them (modem and/or VPN)? On the proxy settings - I checked the box for 'This network connects to the Internet', I did several tests on unchecking/checking the box on 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet' - tried both IP of my desktop PC (192.168.1.12) and default gateway (192.168.1.1) on ports 8080, 80. I noticed though - the box for 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet' - always goes unchecked everytime I go back to check the settings.
i did several test settings, but it doesn't worked either. always it says 'This page cannot be displayed, connection was lost check settings'
any idea on these? thanks for your time
guess you could try changing the dns to what the pc is using
and try with other applciations like the network tools ping
and messenger to see if it's a IE issue
I also want to connect to internet through activesync 4.5 usb
hi, i have the same problem, i want to connect to internet through activesync 4.5 and wm5 herms. i am not good a computer use so could you please guide me step by step. i can synchronize but can't use internet.
if its through the office network, you may need to play with some settings to "fool" the office network to let you out.
The way to check what im talking about is to download http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/ portable firefox, and see if it connects by default. In my office, i had to input the LAN proxy settings into firefox to make it work. If this is the same for you, then i guess you'll have to do the same on the PPC. If you do find that this is the problem, and you cannot connect with firefox, post back and ill see if i can help
Turn off "Advanced Features"

There's a setting in ActiveSync "Advanced" and uncheck the box. See if that helps. It apparently has helped others with USB connection issues.
rightclick on ActiveSync icon on systemtray --> connection settings... ---> config as my pic you can access internet thought your PC. If you still can't connect to internet please hardreset your PDA

Connecting to the Internet over a WiFi network

So I'm facing this problem, generally not just on my Touch HD but also on a older Dell Axim x50v but also on a friends iPhone.
I got a WiFi network set up at home, secured etc. two notebooks connect over it to the internet on a daily basis, but I just can't get the HD or any other mobile device to connect to the Internet over the WiFi.
On my HD, I can easily connect to the WiFi, even edit router settings over it, but not the internet. The MAC of the HD is entered in the router to be given a fixed IP and is allowed to receive packets same as the tow notebooks.
Is there some problem with the mobile devices or is it a issue with the WiFi?
On my device I found the connection through Comm Manager>Wi-fi>Settings>Wireless LAN quite straightforward. Does not need any mac# assignment on the router as long as WEP/WPA keys are in router (router set in infrastructure mode). Other settings I used, if that's any help is in Configure Wireless Networks - Networks to Access - Only access points and in Network Adaptors - My network card connects to - The Internet.
Hope that helps.

Hi was able to save this ans but forgot the source though.
1. Go to start/settings/connections and click 'Wi-Fi.
Click 'Wi-Fi' and from the drop down menu chose 'Work' (not 'The Internet') then click 'OK'.
(Seems crazy I know but that's WM terminology for you).
2. You should still be in start/settings/connections/ so click 'Connections' the 'Advanced' tab.
click 'Select Networks' and set both boxes to 'My Work Network'.
Click OK.
3. Now when you click Settings/Communications (in Touch Flo desktop) and turn on Wi-Fi every app that connects to the internet will automatically connect via your WiFi connection.
4. If you need to connect using your Telco’s Data connection (should you be away from a WiFi router:
From Settings/Communications click then 'Select Networks' and in the top box choose 'internet' or ('Optus internet settings' in my case).
Remember to disconnect using 'Select networks switch' and change it back to 'My Work Network' as per step 2 once your finished.
this solves my problem..
some though needs to boost there power settings. To do so;
Go to start/settings/connections and click 'Wi-Fi. Then go to advance then choose "power mode" tab. Then change the slide to middle from best battery or to best performance.
HTH.
I tried both suggestions and it still doesn't work for me. Well, it further hints towards a problem with my router settings, so gonna have to see if I can find the problem there.

Internet Dropped When Connected with USB

Anytime I connect to my home (or work laptop) via USB, the internet no longer works. At work, I can understand this because of the proxy server, etc. Is there any way to always connect via my 3G connection and when connected via USB not to change the connection from 3G?
It's weird cos i have the same problem, but not all the time. When I flash my Miri rom's some seem to work over 3G when connect via USB, my latest one doesn't.
Now i dont sync my device to the PC anyway, so i use the power adapter and bluetooth, thus not having the issue. although I have never bothered to try and figure it out.
to force the data connection, try this
settings menu all settings connections connections - advanced tab, select network, and set the top drop down to the name of your data connection.
(if it already is, then.... ummm I dunno)
sorry but this did not work.
In activesync/WMDC, go to connection settings, and check "allow internet connections while connected" or something like this.
By default it cuts the other connections as the phone will get the net through activesync when it's connected.

this also did not work
On your phone:
Start > Tools > QuickGPS
Menu > Options
Turn off '"Download QuickGPS when connected to PC via ActiveSync".

How to connect WM 6.5 device to WinXP via Ad Hoc to Internet

Hello All,
Here is my problem and I need help.
Situation:
Laptop WinXp is connected to Internet via cable modem.
Now I want to make access to Internet via Wi-Fi from laptop for WM 6.5 device.
I manage to connect and browse Internet with other laptop via laptop connected to cable modem –internet. WM device is showing connected to SSID but Internet doesn’t work.
Internet access via ActiveSync and USB cable is working perfectly but via Wi-Fi doesn’t
After many hours browsing various forums I couldn’t find any good working solution.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Regards and Thank you.

How can I at least connect WM6.5 using Laptop's Internet?
I have WM6.5 device (HD2) with no data plan. At home I can use wifi to connect to internet. However at work, I have ActiveSync 4.5 on laptop but It does not connect to Internet. I read somewhere that using ActiveSync WM device can use laptops internet, but I could not get it to work. Can anyone tell me how??
Intermittently with some setting change I was able to get internet only via Internet Explorer in HD2, and at one other time only in Opera, but never from any other Apps (like GoogleMaps, HD2 sense's Weather, etc). It could be when I tried InternetSharing on my laptop's WinXP's network connection to wireless Network or to LAN2 (LAN to Wireless or LAN to LAN2. LAN2 is automatically showing when my device is connected via ActiveSync). However I am back to zero now.
I wonder it has anything to do with Company's Firewall policies. On my laptop Firewall is turned off. But then I was not able to get this to work at home either.
I have the following settings on ActiveSync's "Connection Settings":
All six items checked.
3rd Item dropdown box has COM3 or DMA (could not figure out any difference).
4th item dropdown has Automatic or Work Network.
connected via USB cable.
Let me know what is it that I am missing??

Try changing the 4th item dropdown to "The Internet"
Try unchecking the "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
The 3rd item dropdown doesn't matter if you connect via USB.
Can someone figure out how to sync via WiFi?
Undoubtedly, technology problems hold you and your company back. That's not good for business and as such it's a great idea to get the problems fixed quickly. For several small companies, small business computer support isn't confined to one person within the company; rather, it is tech support that is called in.

I tried and that did not work. Is there any body who got this working, if not in company settings, what about in home settings??
