Hi guys,
I've got a netopia router (Irish "eircom" broadband) and while normal internet connections via laptop or PC (with USB Wifi dongle) work fine I just can't get my XDA Mini S to actually access the internet. I have managed to actually get it to connect via WIFI however when I launch internet explorer and click on a link it says it can't access using this connection.
"Can't connect with current connection settings. To change you connection settings, tap Settings".
Under connections I'm not sure what to select as I don't believe I need to setup a modem connection or VPN - am I wrong here??
It shows "connected" in the WIFI settings, indicating my SSID etc. Could someone advise me on what else I need to set. Basically I'm obtaining an IP address and my laptop etc work fine, just wondering what more I need to do to bash internet explorer into submission on the XDA. Is is just me or are Microsoft making this very hard on the normal user..

SSID is correct.. i.e my Wireless LAN
Mode : infrastructure
BSSID is set (though I don't know what this indicates)
TX Rate :auto
Channel :7
Start--> settings -->Wireless Lan - Advanced Tab
Status : Associated to Network
MAC number given
IP address given (so I guess DHCP is working fine)
Leap tab and Enroll tab - all settings blank.

SSID shows Connected
Under Network Adapters tab : My network card connects to the Internet.
Adapter NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver. (not sure what difference this makes????)
I temporarily disabled WEP for the purposes of simplifying things.
Simple yet very annoying problem:
Go to Settings->connections->connections->advanced->network selection and make sure both combos read 'My ISP'.
Then, when connecting to your WiFi network select 'This network connects to the internet' (as I understand you already have this set under 'network adapters' so it should be ok).

Anyone know how to specify that the trinity uses the activesync passthrough then wi-fi then lastly gprs/3g when it requires data?
Its proper annoying that it connects to gprs when plugged in and wi-fi is enabled!

Try this:
Open ActiveSync on you PC, Navigate to File > Connection Settings, un-tick 'Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop'.
I also dont have this problem.
As a sanity check, have you selected "this computer is connected to: The Internet/Work Network" in the Connection settings of Windows Active Sync. Also, is your wifi adapter set up to connect to "the internet"?

yes - although I'm usind wmdc and yes...hmmm
I also use WMDC. Does your pda connect to gprs for any site at all, or just a particular one such as your service provider's homepage. I have mine set up to always use gprs to connect to the vodafone live website, otherwise it uses wifi/activesync as the default.
On your pda, under settings->connections->advanced->exceptions. do you have any url exceptions listed?
Also, under settings->connections->advanced->select networks, is your gprs connection under the "programs that auto. connect to the internet", or "programs that connect to a private network".
My gprs settings are under private network, and I have checked the box stating the private network connects to the internet under proxy settings.

Okay, this has been bugging me for a long time, so I decided to solve this by myself once and for all.
Situation:
1. GPRS requires a proxy connection
2. WiFi and ActiveSync (A.S. on PC when connecting to an Exchange Server) "inherit" the same GPRS proxy settings, and are unable to connect to that proxy server, which make them both unusable.
So, naturally, I configured "The Internet" connection to use the GPRS access point and the GPRS proxy,
And "My Work Network" to be an internet connection WITHOUT a proxy.
But for some reason, that doesn't work.
The connections tab doesn't let "My Work Network" to be a "proxyless" internet connection.
I tried many configurations, trying to fool the wifi connection, until I got to a final solution that works.
The wifi knows to pick the connection without the proxy, so does the activesync, and so does the default GPRS connection, when no other connection is present, automatically!
So, the solution is this:
1. Go to the Start->Settings->Connections->Advanced tab->Select networks
Under "Programs that… Internet should connect using"
Click New to create a new connection:
Name for settings: Direct Internet
Modem: Leave Blank
Proxy Settings:
This network connects to the internet [Check]
This network uses a proxy [Uncheck, or Check and fill in your home proxy settings]
Click OK.
2. Under "Programs that… private network should connect using"
Click New to create a new connection:
Name for settings: GPRS Internet
Modem: Click New, and follow the wizard to add your GPRS access point.
Proxy Settings:
This network connects to the internet [Check]
This network uses a proxy [Uncheck, or Check and fill in your GPRS proxy settings]
Click OK until all windows are closed.
3. Now we need to get WiFi and AS to use the "Direct Internet" we created.

(This will make your Wifi choose the "Direct Internet" connection, with the proxy you specified, or without a proxy)

(This will make your ActiveSync inherit the "Direct Internet" connection, with the proxy you specified, or without a proxy)
That’s it, you're done!
The beauty is that Windows mobile knows it needs to use the "GPRS Internet", only when other connections are not present.
Now you don't have to mess with selecting a proxyless connection when connecting to a WiFi source, or using activesync

Shlomki is there any way i can force MS Exchange to use AS when cradled? coz somehow it connects using GPRS even when cradled and connected to AS...

if you followed the steps exactly as i described, exchange SHOULD use AS (your PC's internet connection). that's how its working for me right now.
when cradled and connected to AS, did you try browsing to a website to see which connection it tries to use? try to use PIE and see if it tries to connect to the GPRS or the PC's internet connection.
if it uses GPRS also, there might be a problem with your settings..
Repeat stages 1 & 4, they are critical for that matter.
Try stage 1 without entering a proxy server. just uncheck the proxy settings and check "This network connects to the internet".
Shlomki do u think i should uncheck enable advanced networking in settings--> connections-->USB to PC....?? do u think that maybe the problem creator?

when i complete step 2 [without checking proxy settings] and go back to see if this connects to the internet is checked or not it is always unchecked even though i check it some seconds more... am i doing something wrong here?? i dont think my GPRS connection uses any proxy settings...

yes, it happens to me also. i think thats the way they intended it to be.
when you use a proxy with the work network, it doesnt uncheck the internet option.
are you using a proxy at all?
no i dont use a proxy..... i connect to the internet using a cable modem... n between the cable modem and the PC is my netgear WiFi router...
then why did you follow a post that's inteded for proxy connections
just select your proxyless gprs settings as your internet connection, and set active sync (on the pc) and network cards (on the ppc) to use "the internet".
im sorry if i didnt make myself clear.... i had proxies... since ur method didnt work i changed the whole setup on my PC and now i dont use a proxy...
but ur post was very informative nonetheless..

Thank you so much for this work around. You don't know how long I have been fighting this problem. What an elegant solution!
I think that I might try to abuse this to let other porgrams connect using T-mo GPRS since it seems that only web works when the Proxy is on, and other things work when its not.

are you using wm6?
wm6 roms have a known issue with connecting to some secured networks.
try to set your router to allow unsecured connections and reconfigure your wifi settings in your ppc.
if it connects fine, the problem is with the wifi drivers.

Followed the instructions when trying to connect with explorer it says cannot connect with these settings after further investagation for some reason the this connection connets to the internet check box won´t stick on the new connection we made or on work connection every time i go back to check it it´s unchecked again any ideas thanks

read the manual again, from start to finish, and do not skip a word.
if you're not using a proxy in your "Work Network Settings", this manual is not for you.
It took me a bit, but I've figured out how to share a tethered connection, such that the following setup works: I use my 8525 tethered to my laptop via USB to get an internet connection. I use XP Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to share my internet access over a wifi ad-hoc connection so that another laptop(s) (i.e., girlfriend) can also get online.
This might not seem like much of a feat, but if you have ever tried to do it you will soon find that it is not normally possible. ICS on XP automatically sets up the host computer to act as a gateway using IP 192.168.0.1. This IP cannot manually changed on XP, as far as I have been able to determine through extensive googling (the same is not true for Win98, FWIW). And the same thing occurs with Window Mobile Internet Sharing. This means that there are two gateways competing to use 192.168.0.1 and the process fails with an error message saying something to that effect. I have looked high and low through the WM registry to find a way to change the IS default gateway IP, but had no luck. However the following works on the WM side to rectify the problem:
1) Enable Internet Sharing in WM6.
2) Attach to PC and wait for connection to be established.
3) In WM6, go to Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi. Click Network Adapters tab.
4) Set "My network connects to:" to Internet.
5) Click Remote-NDIS Host.
6) Change IP address to 192.168.1.1. Click OK.
7) On PC, enable Internet Connection Sharing under the Properties for the Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device. Select the network you wish to share your connection over. Either Wifo ad-hoc or Ethernet via a crossover cable.
dotFred Task Manager reports that WM is now bound to two IP addresses, 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1, but I have had no problems.

Hi,
I have a HTC S710 (Vox) and a laptop with Ubuntu running on it.
When i connect the smartphone to my laptop with USB, it shows up as a Generic RNDIS device and connects.
If i run zaTelnet pro on the phone and SSH to the ip of my laptop (on the USB network device), i'm able to connect.
But when i put the same ip address in the address bar of Internet Explorer on my phone, it says i can't connect because my 'internet connection is not configured', i guess it wants to connect through wifi or something.
Btw: I have apache running on the laptop, so i want to get the webpage from my laptop on my phone through usb connection.

I've also restarted the apache server after i connected the phone, no difference.

choose my hone network or something like that not being your isp

Sorry to sound stupid, but i can't find connections->connections.
I've gone through all available items in the connections menu, but there's nothing with an 'advanced' option?
What am I doing wrong?

well i don't own a vox
but all devices with wm i've used
i open the start menu
i click settings
i click the conections tab
i click connections icon
i click advanced tab
i click select networks button
and i get a window with the 2 dropdown buttons
Are you sure you're not talking about a pocket pc?
It's been a bit since I had my smartphone out (blackjack), but I think there are options for the connection in pocket ie. Check the menu and see.
I've unchecked the autodetect setting setting, changed the connection to Internet, Work, WAP, Secured WAP, none work...
Any other possibilities?
