Howto: Share your tethered connection with other clients via ICS - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

It took me a bit, but I've figured out how to share a tethered connection, such that the following setup works: I use my 8525 tethered to my laptop via USB to get an internet connection. I use XP Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to share my internet access over a wifi ad-hoc connection so that another laptop(s) (i.e., girlfriend) can also get online.
This might not seem like much of a feat, but if you have ever tried to do it you will soon find that it is not normally possible. ICS on XP automatically sets up the host computer to act as a gateway using IP 192.168.0.1. This IP cannot manually changed on XP, as far as I have been able to determine through extensive googling (the same is not true for Win98, FWIW). And the same thing occurs with Window Mobile Internet Sharing. This means that there are two gateways competing to use 192.168.0.1 and the process fails with an error message saying something to that effect. I have looked high and low through the WM registry to find a way to change the IS default gateway IP, but had no luck. However the following works on the WM side to rectify the problem:
1) Enable Internet Sharing in WM6.
2) Attach to PC and wait for connection to be established.
3) In WM6, go to Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi. Click Network Adapters tab.
4) Set "My network connects to:" to Internet.
5) Click Remote-NDIS Host.
6) Change IP address to 192.168.1.1. Click OK.
7) On PC, enable Internet Connection Sharing under the Properties for the Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device. Select the network you wish to share your connection over. Either Wifo ad-hoc or Ethernet via a crossover cable.
dotFred Task Manager reports that WM is now bound to two IP addresses, 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1, but I have had no problems.

Can't access network via Widcomm Bluetooth

Hi,
I’m using a Dynamode usb Bluetooth dongle with Widcomm 1.4.2.10 on WinXP and the bluetoothgps files on my XDA II. I'm trying to access my LAN and the internet using the Network Access profile, but so far I can’t even ping between the XDA and PC.
I've set up OBEX File Transfer and it works fine in both directions. I go to the Bluetooth Manager, add a new connection, browse the services of my PC and add Network Access. I authorise the connection on the PC then the network connection bubble appear on the XDA but it never connects. I've read on several guides that a specific IP address needs to be given, that’s fine, I want to use static IP addresses. So I go to connection settings for BT Network Access and on the Advanced page set the IP address to 192.168.0.101. I've set the username and password to an account on the PC that has access to everything. On my PC, in network connections I give the Bluetooth Network IP 192.168.0.100 and my LAN connection 192.168.0.1 (the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 for all of them). When I try to connect again, it succeeds, but using vxUtil I get timeouts when l try to ping the PC and vice-versa.
I've also tried it the other way round, setting up the Personal Network Server in Bluetooth Settings and connecting from the PC. In connection settings->Advanced->Network card->BT PAN User Driver I've set the IP address to 192.168.0.101. Again it connects fine, but I can’t ping.
I've also tried the Activesync profile (although this is less important as I can activesync over the network if I get it working). I'm sure I've set Activesync to use the right comm port, but it just says the device is not recognised for one of two reasons.....
This is really frustrating me now, I've tried reinstalling the BT software on the PC side and I’ve tried different versions, but I get the same result every time. I’ve followed several step by step guides on how to do this but still no luck. If anyone's got any ideas please let me know!!

HI,
Check out this tutorial:
http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=74
That was the first tutorial i tried, everything works fine until I ping the PC or XDA and I get nothing
-Tom. A
I can ping from my Xda2 to Pc and the same from pc to xda2,everything seems to work fine but..
using resco explorer (trial) It can't find any network pcs.
What's wrong? someone can help me?

internet access through ad hoc wifi connection?

hi, im not able to connect to the net with my wizard.
i dont have a wireless router so am connecting directly to my laptop, the ad hoc connection i have made works fine for file tranfers, but not for activesync or connecting to the web in either PIE or minimo.
i know activesync isnt possible but surely i should be able to use the broaband from my laptop?
any pointers would be greatly appreciated. software? settings?
its a t-mobile uk vario with qtek test rom.
also anyone know of a remote control utility, i use logmein but would like something a little more menu/macro based for control of media.
cheers
kevo
Try turning on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your laptop; that'll make your laptop act a bit more like a router, providing NAT services to the Wizard.
yeah i've tried that, and i've just tried bridging connections (dont really know much about that) but that hasnt worked either.

My configuration
Me too, I use ADHOC connection for my WLAN.
PC configuration:
ADSL connection shared
Adress IP:192.168.1.1 Mask:255.255.255.0
PocketPC configuration:
Adress IP:192.168.1.55 Mask:255.255.255.0 Gateway:192.168.1.1
DNS:80.10.246.2 for Wanadoo
Your problem is certainly the DNS.
You can put 192.168.1.1 too.
so it is possible? cool!.......but im still having problems.
i cant figure out how to enter these settings, not to sure where to put them,
iv tried puttin the DNS in the -> connections -> vpn
and -> network cards -> networks adapters -> SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter
sorry to be a pain, but could you point me to where to get each address and where to put them?
also is there anything particular you did to set up the adhoc network? i just used the Windows XP wizard and then ticket the AdHoc option after.
my laptop is conected to the router and the router is connected to aol adsl.
the ip address of my laptop is showing as a simple 10.0.0. number on the LAN but "Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.235.147" for the WLAN
none of my setup has a static ip address, could this be causing the problems?
thanks
kevo
It's more hazardous without static adress but it's can work.
My PC has directly access to the Internet with a ADSL modem.
It's here (network cards -> networks adapters -> SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter )
Apparently, it's ok for your PC and the Ad-Hoc mode.
Maybe, you should have your adress IP WLAN on the same network adress of your router.
I GOT IT WORKING!!!
I started again from scratch.
set a new WLAN. added new setup to the vario, added the DNS etc to the vario.
the problem i was having was the way i was sharing the internet connection, i was trying to shared the internet from the wireless to the lan rather than the internet from the lan to the wireless (if that makes sense to anyone!!!). i also ticked all the connection sharing services to allow them, just need to go through them and see which i dont need now.
thanks for the help guys
kevo
(its showing my transfer rate as 11Mbps, although i think iv done the G tweak and my laptop says its got a G card. what speeds should i be getting?)

ppc (using USB activesync cable) to access the internet thru LAN?

i have an i-mate Jasjar wm5, I am using USB activesync cable to connect my device to my desktop PC. I would like to access the internet using LAN-DSL in my office.
Any idea or suggestions on how to do it?
Suggestions, insights, or any kind of guidance is highly appreciated.
unless you have set it to block it
then your device connected to activesync will allways have the same
lan network access as the pc
you prob have to change connection in settings->connection->connection advantage and pick mynetwork rather then my isp

thanks for the quick reply. activesync (v4.5) is on the exceptions list of windows firewall, hence it is not blocked.
My Work Network connection settings (modem and VPN) is empty. do we have to input any settings on them (modem and/or VPN)? On the proxy settings - I checked the box for 'This network connects to the Internet', I did several tests on unchecking/checking the box on 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet' - tried both IP of my desktop PC (192.168.1.12) and default gateway (192.168.1.1) on ports 8080, 80. I noticed though - the box for 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet' - always goes unchecked everytime I go back to check the settings.
i did several test settings, but it doesn't worked either. always it says 'This page cannot be displayed, connection was lost check settings'
any idea on these? thanks for your time
guess you could try changing the dns to what the pc is using
and try with other applciations like the network tools ping
and messenger to see if it's a IE issue
I also want to connect to internet through activesync 4.5 usb
hi, i have the same problem, i want to connect to internet through activesync 4.5 and wm5 herms. i am not good a computer use so could you please guide me step by step. i can synchronize but can't use internet.
if its through the office network, you may need to play with some settings to "fool" the office network to let you out.
The way to check what im talking about is to download http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/ portable firefox, and see if it connects by default. In my office, i had to input the LAN proxy settings into firefox to make it work. If this is the same for you, then i guess you'll have to do the same on the PPC. If you do find that this is the problem, and you cannot connect with firefox, post back and ill see if i can help
Turn off "Advanced Features"

There's a setting in ActiveSync "Advanced" and uncheck the box. See if that helps. It apparently has helped others with USB connection issues.
rightclick on ActiveSync icon on systemtray --> connection settings... ---> config as my pic you can access internet thought your PC. If you still can't connect to internet please hardreset your PDA

Create wifi network on PocketPC (HTC Touch) to share it's internet connection?

Hi,
I don't think this is currently possible but I do not see any reason why? Does anyone know if there is a 3rd party app to provide this?
Thanks,
Phillip
Possible ! (Well somewhat)
This is very much possible. I got it working as follows :
(1) Create a WiFi connection on Pocket Pc with ad-hoc feature and Open Security, make sure you select "Work" as the connection.
(2) Give the WiFi adapter on Pocket PC an internal address similar to 192.168.0.2 (255.255.255.0)
(3) On your PC/Laptop set WiFi adapter IP to 192.168.0.1 (255.255.255.0)
(4) You need a program like Pocket PC Proxy to be installed on the Pocket PC.
(5) Enable proxy settings on Laptop as 192.168.0.2:80 (or the port set on the proxy prog on ppc)
(6) Enable WiFi on ppc
And Voila ! You can browse internet using the connection on your ppc.
Hi,
Thanks, I will give this a try. However, I can't seem to find this piece of software (Pocket PC Proxy). Can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Here you go...
Thanks for the download, I'm using an HTC Touch (Elf) with WM6. I can't seem to figure out how to create an ad-hoc wifi connection?
(Sorry to be a pain but i think that this will benefit others too!)
Ahaa, I managed to figure out how to create an adhoc network on the Pocket PC, I assigned it the correct IP (as above) and basically followed the instructions.
I'm actually trying to get my iPod Touch to connect to the net via the HTC Touch.
I iPod sees the wifi connection and connects perfectly, I can even assign the ip and subnet mask. However, I simply can not connect to the internet either with or without the proxy. Any suggestions on what I am missing?
THanks
What kind of an internet connection do you have on the ppc ?
- GPRS/EDGE ? Is it always connected/on ?
Got it working, you can ignore the following
Thanks!

Hi, here is everything I have done:
Connections, Internet
Modem: T-Mobile Internet, GPRS (UK, no edge)
Proxy Settings: This network connects to the internet
This network uses a proxy server to conncet to the internet
149.254.291.132
(This was all set by the phone when I switched it on)
My Work Connection:
Nothing set up here
WIFI
Add New...
Network Name: test
Connects to: Work
This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection
Authentication: Open
Data Encryption: Disabled
This seems to create an ad-hoc connection and sits there with 'Connecting' until another device connects to it.
Network Adapters
My network card connects to: Work
IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible WIFI....
Edit:
Use specific IP address:
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0
(Everything else blank)
Wireless LAN
SSID: test
Mode: 802.11 Ad hoc
Channel: 11
When I connect two devices together the IP shown under advanced seems to read 192.168.0.21 (I think this should end .2 so not sure why it isn't)
If I connect my laptop I can 'ping' 192.168.0.2 and that works but both my laptop and ipod touch do not seem to be able to connect to the internet.
On the ipod touch I simply get 'Server not found' or something similar.
(I have remembered to run PocketPCProxy)
Yes, the GPRS is connected whenever I run PocketPCProxy.
I would really appreciate any help you can give, I really like using the browser on my ipod Touch but don't really want to go the whole hog and buy an iPhone because it is so tied down and restricted.
Thanks,
Phillip
I don't know what I have done but suddenly it works, now it comes up and shows the correct ip on my pocket pc.
Anyway, thanks for your help!
Hi everyone,
I have been trying to ad-hoc connect my PC (Lenovo X60s with XPSP2) to HTC Touch via WiFi to be able to share files and stream music.
It did connect and pinged ok, however the two just refuse to see one another on their networks.
Does anyone have any successful experience trying for the same?
Regards,
Madana
I tried this between my TyTN and TyTN II, the latter being the gateway, but the TyTN insists on still using GPRS for its internet instead of the wifi. Very annoying, and it's runing WM5 so (i dont think) you can't turn of the GPRS like you can with WM6.
Does anyone know how to make it use wifi, and wifi only for internet?
Thanks,
Sebastian
i have installed pocket pc proxy after a file called ......ppc3.arm.cab (i don't remember how it begins) but it doesn't work... any idea?
same here the pocket pc proxy when i run shows a fatal error in running it.
what should we do??

Using your 6800 as a Modem for your Wireless Router

ive had my cable shut off for a few months now and have been tethering my 6800 to my laptop and PC for internet access. recently, a buddy of mine needed to download a large app on his iphone which required being connected to a wireless network. my router was still on for networking purposes but did not have an internet connection. then i discovered an incredibly simple way to use the data connection from my phone as an internet line for my modem, effectively adding internet access to my wireless router and allowing his iphone, my laptop, my ps3, and PC, all to connect to the internet. i thought this maybe useful for others, so here's how to do it:
Requirements:
XV6800 (or any WinMo phone) with tethering enabled
PC/Laptop w/ LAN connection
1) Create a Dial-up connection for your phone, if you haven't already.
2) Connect to DUN
3) Open Control Panel --> Network Connections
4) Right-click your DUN and select Properties
5) On the 'General' tab, highlight your modem and click Configure, then set the Maximum Speed to 921600 and click OK (not required, seemed to increase speeds though)
6) On the 'Advanced' tab (XP) or 'Sharing' tab (Vista), enable the checkbox for 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet Connection' and click OK
7) Check the Status of your Local Area Connection. The IP address should now be 192.168.0.1
8) On your Wireless Router, move the LAN cable from its input jack into the 'Internet' jack.
9) You should see the internet activity light on your router light up and you are good to go!
NOTE: after sharing the DUN connection with your LAN, the IP settings for the LAN connection are set to a static IP of 192.168.0.1. You will have to change the IP settings back to 'Obtain IP address automatically' in order to have your LAN connection working properly again.
You can also get WMWifiRouter. It will uses the phones wifi to create an ad-hoc network and can tether via USB too. Version 0.89 is cooked into a few roms as it was one of the last free versions.
I have a Cradlepoint CTR-350 that I have been using so that I can connect with my PS3 and not need to set up connection sharing on my PC.

I've been using WMwifirouter as well. Have it on our Titan (xv6800) which my niece uses now. Had it on my HTC Touch Pro. And now I have it on my HTC Touch Pro 2.
I like the original posters idea alot too incase you didn't want to fork out $30 for the latest wmwifirouter software.
ah but as also indicated the last free versions work fine and do the same thing. I love using it on the go in my vehicle. My wife surfs the net while I drive on long trips.
