Installing phone image onto WM5 emulator - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I was hoping you could help me with some research.
I'm looking into copying the data of my Herm100 JasJam using the 'rbmc' command in the bootloader (when connected to a PC using mtty). I'm hoping to take the data recovered from the phone and upload it into a Hermes or Windows Mobile 5 emulator.
I was hoping your combined knowledge could answer, specifically:
1. Do you think this senario is possible?
2. What format would you recommend save the file created by the 'rbmc' command?
3. Do you know of a Hermes or WM5 emulator which allows you to upload images?
Any assistance or comments would be greatly appreciated for my research.
Cheers

Help please using XDAtools as I am a dummy!!!

Sorry folks but I have already posted this and don't know how to delete the previous post. after I reviewed the previous post I don't think I made myself clear enough. Please accept my apologies. But would appreciate help on this.
I have read the majority of the info on XDAtools on the forum and installed I believe correctly. I currently run on Win98SE. I have installed Jeff summers version of XDA tools. And though I think I understand what I am doing I am not totally convinced. Before I embark on cooking roms and upgrading etc I would like to be able to do the following:
1: Dump my current rom from my device to my PC I can do this using
XDAtools OSImage. But have noticed that I can only appear to dump
this as NB1(windows CE(*.nb1) type files if I try to call this NBF I get
the following errors:
”error opening C:\program files\xdatools\bootloader_v5_15.nb0ea for
reading. the system cannot find the file specified”
”error opening source bootloader from C:\program
files\xdatools\bootloader_v5_15.nb0ea. error opening target device”
Is it possible to dump my ROM to a file called ‘xxxx.NBF’? or must I stick with *.NB1? this is not a problem as long as the NB1 file can be reloaded.
2: When I try to upgrade my ROM by using OSImage tool and selecting
source as:
‘C:\PROGRAM FILES\XDATOOLS\BINARIES\ATT160204.NB1’
Select destination as ‘device memory (via Programme A) ‘
When attempting to load an ‘NB1’ ROM from my PC to my device memory
(via Programme A) I always get the following message:
”Programme A not found - run with --register error opening target device”
I originally ran the ProgrammeA with ‘--register’ when first installed and tried numerous times since. Can someone please help as I am sure it is something simple I am missing. I only want to be able to use XDAtools to dump and restore ROMs.
I have tried searching for a solution but to no avail. Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance John.
May you tell your current ROM version and device type?
Some ROMs do not accept the EXE or the XDAtools with NBF files upgrading methods. You may have to use the SD card flashing in this case.
Thanks Bis
Thank you Biso007 I am currently running A.30.09.ENG and my device type is an XDA1. But I believe the problem is associated with XDAtools ProgrammeA as it cannot find the specified files. Though I have followed all instructions for definition. There is probably something simple I am missing. You see I only want to be able to use XDAtools to dump and restore Roms without the need for SD/MMC cards.
Thanks John
Try downloading the XDATools from Jeff Summers site, it has all the missing bits, including the required batch file :
http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/XDA/XDAtools-Jeff.exe
That's from the sticky XDATools thread, probably read through there and you will find most questions answered if you continue to have problems.
Remember though that the SD card method is the preferred option, and if you burn any T-Mobile ROM's the SD card is *required* to reverse that.

XDAtools cannot work with WM 2003.
and you no need to backup A.30.09.ENG (ATT USA version WM2003), you can get it from online!

Yes, it for sure!
XDAtools only works with Pocket PC 2002 or some test version WM2003.(<4.0.11)
It cannot work with WM2003 official release (AT&T A.30 or T-mobile).
Thats weird, I am positive I used xdatools to program my sd card through reader writer after downloading the official WM2003 upgrade, in fact I must have used that method because I had to seperate out the radio stack and program just the ce rom, I have no other tools to do this.

I think you'll find that it only does *not* work with T-Mobile WM2003 ROMs. That's only because they lock up their OS to try and prevent us from changing ROMs. I don't think that's the case with any other manufacturer. I also think it doesn't make any difference whether it's WM2003 or WM2002, it solely depends on whether the manufacturer locks the OS.
Thank you cgigate & ebswift re XDAtools/WM2003
Thank you Cgigate and ebswift maybe this is why I am encountering problems with my download and restore of my ROM. I inadvertently choose a WM2003 AT&T rom to practice with. Maybe I should have chosen a PPC 2002 ROM to test??
I thought I had a problem with XDAtools and that I did not have all the correct links/files in place. Maybe I should dump my ROM and try restoring a PPC2002 and then re try my test. Thanks again guys.
i used xda tools with the AT&T WM2003 rom on my uk o2 xda with no problem. I wanted to keep my old radio stack as it was working fine and just used the os upgrade file, via SD card.
I would recommend updating activesync to 3.7 if you are doing it via the XDA cradle.
maltloaf
Did you use XDAtools to copy direct to device
Thank you Maltloaf, when you upgraded your rom did you use XDAtools directly from PC to device or copy the file onto your SD/MMC card and use the bootloader program to load ?? If so maybe you can answer the problem I am encountering. Thanks john
i have flashed twice (had to go back to 2002 for a short while)
both times using the SD card/bootloader method and I transferred the file onto the card using xdatools in the xda/cradle
Thank you Maltloaf
Thank you Maltloaf this seems to be clearer now, but in the context of upgrading etc XDAtools is only being used to copy the file from source to SD/MMC card. I was under the impression that XDAtools did not require the use of SD/MMC card. But maybe it's a matter of finding out what works for you. John
well xdatools should be able to flash directly to the xda as far as i know but it's always the safest way to do it sdcard style
Thanks to all
My thanks to all you helped with my recent questions. Thanks John

Custom ROM for Pocket PC

Hi
Sorry if this post is not in the right place. I am in great need of help. I am a mobile software developer. A client who is into automation contacted me. The client has a control application that he would like to start up whenever the pocket pc starts. This itself is not a problem, since you can simply create a registry key to handle this. The problem comes in that the application must still start even if the battery has been drained completely and the device start like it does after a hard-reset.
From what I have read, it is possible to create a custom ROM image that contains the key described above. The application could be stored in the backup storage area of the ROM.
I have looked at tools to edit the .nbf files that are available with the ROM updates for the pocket pc from the manufacturer (HP iPAQ running WM2003SE), but I cannot find a clear answer, and my knowledge of Unix is bad at best.
Any help and suggestions from anyone on how to edit the .nbf file or any other method to manage this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Prophet similar to HTC Wizard - Help porting Linux to them!

Hello there,
as many of you may already know, the HTC Prophet shares a lot of its hardware with the HTC Wizard. We, the Linwizard Project, aim to port Linux to this OMAP-platform, as other users did port Linux for PXA-based devices like HTC Universal...etc.
I just want to invite you Prophet Users to checkout our project. Our procedure and yet available kernel should also run on your phone....
http://linwizard.sourceforge.net
Greetings,
Maui
Hi, I want to install Linux on my new Qtek s200, but I don't know how to do that. What is the project's actual status? I hate WM5
Is there any updates to this as yet? I would really love to see this ported/Running to my HTC prophet
Running it now
Yes, there has been some progress... the basic PDA functions are available: X runs, touchscreen works making it possible to run GPE on it:
Here's a link to a recent build which works reasonably well. It contains the f*ugly GPE shell so it is not pretty to look at, but it does work.
http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/embedded/linwizard/gizard-20081108.tar.bz2
To try this for yourself, download the image, unpack the tarball and copy the entire contents to a directory on your SD-card. Go into that directory and run haret-0.5.2.exe. Run the 'default.txt' configuration.
Once the kernel boots it will start a telnet daemon on 10.100.0.1:23. Configure your side of the rndis network to be 10.100.0.2 (ifconfig usb0 10.100.0.2 on Linux, whatever on Windows) and telnet 10.100.0.1. Login as root, there is no password. Once logged in run startx to get GPE up and running.
Once GPE runs you'll want to add the onscreen keyboard to the panel. To do this tap-and-hold on the taskbar (bottom of screen) and add the 'input selector'. This gives you an on-screen keyboard just like the WM-one. Add a terminal launcher as well to get access to an xterm.
If all this is gibberish to you you might want to learn some unix/linux before you try...
Thanks alot it works on my prophet it's very fast to but am unable to login as root is there a way I can login to linux without using typing root? if not can u help me with the telneting into it please what software do I have to use on my pc it's a Windows is there anysite with instructions? I like it alot but since the prophet dont got a keyboard on it's own am not able to login please help and Thanks in Advance
Booting and running Linux on the Prophet
Most of what you need to boot and run Linux is described on the linwizard project site:
http://linwizard.wiki.sourceforge.net/
The version offered on the site is out of date - it does not do much more than boot the kernel which you can control through SSH (on 10.100.0.1:22).
To do some more with Linux you'll want to get a newer release. The one mentioned in the previous posting is a good example of where the project is now: relatively complete PDA-support but no real GSM support - so you can not use it as a phone...
To see Linux in action you download the tarball, untar it on your SD-card (either in a card reader on your PC or by untarring it on the PC and transferring all files to a directory below /Storage Card/. Once that is done you are well advised to do a soft reset to clear some memory as haret - the program used to push Windows Mobile out of the way and replace it with Linux - likes memory. After the (optional but advisable) soft reset you take your $favourite_file_manager to the directory where you put the contents of the tarball, execute haret-0.5.2.exe and run the default configuration (just click Run). Linux should boot, albeit slowly (it takes a long time to read the initrd - initial ramdisk - from the SD card). If you get a white screen which stays white for a long time you might as well reboot and try again. If you get a screen with a penguin with a hat on you're in. Plug in the USB cable if you haven't done that yet. You'll be staring at a login: prompt with no obvious means to type anything anywhere... that is because this Linux distribution is made for the Wizard instead of the Prophet, and the Wizard *does* have a keyboard. For now you'll have to resort to telnet to login and get things going. The phone is now listening on the cdc_ethernet interface (over the USB connection) on IP 10.100.0.1 so you'll want to configure the PC-side of the connection to something within that network range - 10.100.0.2 seems a logical choice. Configure the PC-side of the connection with IP 10.100.0.2 (ifconfig usb0 10.100.0.2 up on Linux, many many mouseclicks in the network manager on Windows). Once you have the network configured you can login with *telnet* (NOT ssh as mentioned on the linwizard site, the gizard tarball only has an active telnet daemon!), username is root, there is no password.
Once logged in use 'startx' to get the GPE shell running. It will complain about not being able to find a keyboard. The 'X' cursor appears, follwed shortly by the butt-ugly GPE interface. Once in the shell you can add a keyboard to the taskbar (tap-and-hold, choose add->input manager). There's more stuff to add, like a terminal (always handy) etc. Wifi does not work yet, GSM does not work yet, you just got yourself an iPaq...
If you're looking for eye-candy this is not it - yet. But as it is Linux, and free, and open, it can become anything you want it to...r
Am still getting error when trying to connect to my prophet useing usb is there anyway anything I need windows cant find the drivers is there a site I can download one from that supports my HTC prophet? And I tryed to connect to it but no luck I change my ip address to 10.0.0.2 255.0.0.0 and tryed to telnet to 10.0.0.1 but nothing, is there anyway to ping the device to see if it's up and running am upset, you sure there is no way to use it without having to login as root? How to save my Artemis by sd card

Dear everybody,
I have also killed my 2 day old MDA compact 3 by using the PDAMobiz_Dopod_P800W_AKU301_v1.1.2_PowerMap.exe (Feel really frustrated about it)
It will not load windows only
IPL 1.13.0001
SPL 1.13.0001
GSM 02.49.90
OS 1.28.0.0
I've tried a lot but nothing has worked so far. Now my last resort is using XDA tools to make a bootable sd card.
Is there anyone who make a file that the artemis can use of an SD card?
I would be very much obliged!
did you do CID unlock before installing new ROM?
CID unlock is not required for flashing the PDAMobiz Powermap 1.1.2 ROM. Just make sure you follow the right instructions. I did it and you can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294830&page=2
But make sure that you have synced your Outlook data on desktop as there is something wrong with restoring from backup file the PIM related info (I use Spb Backup, but seems it is same with any backup application)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=295295
more info.
ianvanhaaren:
1. Please provide more info what exactly happens when you try to turn on your device.
2. What type of error you have when you try to re-flash device? At what percent it stops.
3. Connect device to USB, disable USB connection in activesync. Start mtty console, choose USB type connection (mtty attached, in case you need it).
4. type set 32 in console. send this output.
If CID area on device is corrupted, for the moment only imei-check who knows how to re-calculate this area. Even so, if device won't boot in windows it will not help. You need to connect to device thru jtag interface, in order to load modified spl into ram and perform writing into security area, to recover it. Imei-check says, they know jtag for Artemis.
It may cost you a bit of money.
If you have an option to send it to service center, do it. It would be your best choice.
Regards.

you mean how to flash ROM via SDCart ???
There is no other way to update the phone except using the supplied BIN files. You cannot use these files for any other method than MTTY "l" (load) command. You do not need a memory card for the update.
hello
how exactly i do this? how do i flash/install this rom or whatever ti is?
Please read the relevant threads that advertise the ROM to load. They describe the whole process, including the use of the MTTY program.
