Why not?
All 3G phones work in Japan as long as you are using 3G service.
At least Softbank and Docomo.
works fine in JAPAN
Thank you very much for the info !!!

hi Kitano,
are you using a local Japanese SIM card?
If so, which Phone Company? Softbank? Docomo? Does SMS, email etc all work fine? data browsing? Google maps?
Howie,
did you roam? or did you use a local SIM?
Thanks

all HTC phones are not locked in HKG
As long as it is 3G card, then it should work.

Thanks for confirming what I had heard! Definately want to get my phone while I'm in HK.
What I'm concerned about is that they might do things differently in Japan (so you HAVE to buy a Japanese phone), so wondering if all features work, in particular SMS / mail etc... Has anyone actually brought a phone to Japan? How did it go?

Touch HD will work with Softbank and Docomo SIM, however, both work little differently.
With Softbank SIM, SMS works, no MMS. email...depends on the definition but PC based email, such as yahoo mail, gmail is OK. however, Softbank mail (email on mobile phone, very similar to MMS) can not be configured as MMS.
There are way of configureing this by some utility software build by user group, but basicaly information such as server names, access point, ID&password is not officialy disclosed from Softbank.
Internet access is OK, but access to Internet by default configuration (which is automaticaly configured when Softbank SIM is detected by HD) will use access point which is not fixed cost service. Which means you may end up paying a lot of bill.
With Docomo SIM, SMS is OK, No MMS. email such as yahoo mail, Gmail is OK.
iMode mail(email service from Docomo, similar to MMS) can not be configured. Docomo does not allow access to iMode mail server from non-Docomo devices.
Internet access is OK. I haven't confirmed on access point, but possibly similar to Softbank SIM.
(I only had chance to test for little while on Docomo, so not able to clarify)
I hope this information helps
Thanks Hiroakir
That's exactly what I wanted to know. Actually, it's more than I thought to ask! I didn't think about Softbank's unlimited data plan not applying. I'm a heavy data user (work exchange server mail)... so... I might buy in Japan.
Thanks again!

Okay, so here's the problem: I have just unlocked the x01ht, and now I wish to partake in all of it's glory with my Docomo SIM. The calls work fine and all, but I cant seem to do anything with the mail.
I looked all over for the solution for a couple of hours now, but I still haven't been able to find it. With my Docomo phone I have a simple "[email protected]" address, and I can send and receive mail to other phones as well as my webmail, but on the x01ht it's all a no go. Is there any way that I could fix this?
Thanks in advance for any help
That isn't going to work at all on the X01HT.
your @docomo.ne.jp address is i-mode, which the X01HT doesn't have.
If you want to use a PDA-phone on Docomo, they ask you to sign up for their data and push mail service MOPERA.NET. I'm not sure, but I think you'll have to sign up for this to get any kind of data working (internet/mail).
Then I would advise you *not* to sign up for the @mopera.net e-mail, as you will lose that address as soon as you switch providers again. Just use your regular e-mail address and one of the many push solutions available.

That's all correct. If you want to use any data on X01HT with Docomo SIM, you need a mopera U account and you have to sign up for that. That still requires setting up the APN connection manually.
I could set up the mopera U email on my TyTN rom but the push doesn't work. It appears you need to flash Docomo's htc Z rom to get the push work properly. It doesn't really bother me as I am using an alternate push mail service.
Thanks for the help guys. I had no idea of how any of that worked, and I couldn't seem to find the answer anwhere.
Big thanks to the forum; you guys are awesome. I would no doubt have been clueless about everything without the help.
I have X01ht flashed to DoCoMo ROM but don't have any DoCoMo SIM to try mail stuff... With DoCoMo ROM mopera is installed automaticaly, maybe instaling DoCoMo Extended ROM might help, just try installing it manually...
Port 443 blocked?
So I called Docomo last night to sign up for the Mopera U Lite plan as I wanted to use an exchange-based pushmail service instead of theirs. They told me that while port 443 isn't blocked, it also isn't usable. I told them that it makes no sense to block that port as that's how exchange pushmail works on this phone. That and it doesn't make sense that if it isn't blocked, that it also doesn't work either. Ports are either on or off, so unless they have a deny all and only open a few ports, their statement doesn't make sense.
My question becomes: Has anybody here used exchange pushmail on their docomo/mopera U service?
Thanks

Hi All,
I'm traveling from the US (Cingular 8525) to England and Ireland next week. I spoke with the AT&T guys and they said it's quite expensive for data usage there if I'm internationally roaming. I'm currently running WM6 Black Shadow at the moment (which changes frequently). Is there a surefire way to disable the data connection so that even if I accidentally hit my Internet Explorer button or my email tries to sync, it's blocked? Ideally this would be some switch I could easily toggle. Also, does anybody have an idea how much text messages would be if I sent or received them while abroad?
Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance!
-Drew
Check out Paul at modaco. He's written an app, IIRC, that does this.

Easiest thing to do......delete your GPRS settings?? (obviously write them down)
Even easier ... You can set up a connection in settings->connections->connections with obviously incorrect values for AccessPoint (none.att), username ([email protected]) and password (wrongpw), and then set that as the locked connection while you're traveling. Then you can easily toggle it on & off as needed.

BTW, This thread shouldn't be in the WM6 Forum. Would have fit better in the General Hermes section, I think, where mikechannon would've been happy to assist.

Its should do because on the box of the uk version it lists all of the countries that it works in and im sure NO will mean norway?? Email HTC and double check tho?
It does work in Holland
I bought an unlocked G1 in the USA last week and it functions perfectly in the Netherlands. The only thing you need to do is find your country code and provider code. With these codes you add your APN.
hey!
I'm in spain and 3g work fine, you only need to know the APN from your carrier

No problem, I bought the phone off Ebay.
I'm using the G1 with a Hello simcard. (Telenor network)
Both 3G and Edge works perfect. (I usually disable 3G because of battery drain)
The only problem I have is MMS. At the moment there is from my knowledge not possible to have two different APNs. And Telenor do not have a single APN (that I know of) that support both MMS and internet profile. From what I read this should be solved soon. (Then we can have different APNs assigned to different functions such as MMS, Browser etc...)
The APN I use at the moment is:
Name: Telenor
ANP: internet
Username: dj
Password: dj
I've tried several other combinations with the MMS server, proxy etc... but never got it working.
FYI, I updated my phone (orig US RC28) with the modified TC5-RC8 update found here. Keeping root and getting rid of myfaves and the US number format in the dialer. So make sure the phone you buy is Pre RC30 and don't allow any pushed updates from google.
Løp og kjøp!
First of all, I've got to say that there is more Norwegian guys here than I'd expected. I am used to being the only Norwegian (and sometimes Scandinavian guy) on forums like this.
Hilsen nordlendingen
What about special characters? (æøå)
APN for Telenor - solved
I finally sorted the problem with mms on telenor network. (Norway)
Here is APN parameters i use:
name: Telenor
apn: telenor
username: dj
password: dj
mmsc: http://mmsc/
mms proxy: 10.10.10.11
mms port: 8080
mcc:242
mnc:01
Others not listed are <not set>
With this setup both sending and receiving mms works perfect, as well as normal data connection for browsing/mail etc...
Love the G1

You just hold down the corresponding character and you get what you need. Hold down A and you can use Å , O gives you Ø etc...so no problem.
I am having some problems with the æøå support.
Sometimes when I try to use æø or å it mark the entire text I've written, and when I move the cursor with the scrollwheel I am left with either 'a' or 'o' depending on which character I attempted to write.
It happens in the browser, and sometimes other apps as well.
I'm from Norway too
Have bought a G1 on eBay, and it should arrive in a week or so.
Anybody got the APN-settings for Netcom/Onecall?
Hilsen Østlendingen
Just create a new APN,
(name networknorway)
APN : internet
MCC 242
MNC 05
works like a charm on onecall just so you know =)
Thnx.
Wrote you a message on androidcommunity.com but never got an answer.
Now I have all the info I need though.
Looking forward to using the G1 =]
I live in Norway and want the G1
Hi!
Well, now that Google is offering the G1 for 399$, I might want to pick one up. However, I see that its not available in Norway, (although Sweden is one of the lucky). I am considering ordering it to the US or Canada then shipped to Norway.
This should work out fine, right?
Yes, but you'll want to make sure that you have an unlimited data plan, or you'll find your data usage to be high. By limiting your data usage, you'll completely miss the point of the G1, which is really great for internet-on-the-go, streaming videos and music, etc
Thanks for the tip! Ive been looking for an unlimited data plan in Norway for ages, but unfortunately, they are horribly expensive here in Norway for some reason! Makes me mad!
Just ordered.. 264$ for shipping to Canada! What a ripoff! Laughable, but oh well..
The phone works in Norway, no problem...
In regards to unlimited data plan, it's not a must - but still nice. My data traffic is about the same as my last phones. (nokia n82/ htc hermes setup with push mail etc...)
The wifi works great with the G1 and I usually use that when downloading off the market etc..
I do miss some good maps (auto routing) to go with the gps though...
How about Norwegian keys, such as æ, ø and å? How would I be able to use them on the hardware keyboard? Are they mapped to fn + [keys] somehow, or are they handled as special symbols, or what? I guess the G1 has no Norwegian regional settings, or anything?
Kind Regards

They are built in natively. Push and hold "a", then you'll get a list. It works for other key varients also.

Are any of you HD2 owners in Japan?
I'm thinking of getting an HD2 and getting it to Japan.
I'll charge it via USB/PC.
Am I right in thinking I can simply use my current Sim card and continue using the HD2 so long as I use the same Access point and Password for my current carrier? (My current setup is unlimited/SoftBank.)
In other words - the actual phone hardware should make no difference right - so long as the services you use and the login details are the same?
Any opinions would be welcome.
Thanks.
Softbank Pre-paid MMS
I have a slightly different problem: -
I'm using a pre-paid SIM card in my HD2 with unlimited e-mails. I can call and send/receive SMS's no problem. But when someone sends me an MMS (all messages sent to my [email protected] address from phones or internet are treated as MMS), I get the message notification which shows the subject line but; when click to download the message it says that I cannot download. I assume that this is because, although I have unlimited e-mails (via my [email protected] address) I don't actually have internet access; is that right?
I've tried installing Zgembo's S!Mail, but it doesn't seem to install without his manila...which is for a different phone and so messes up the phone interface. Even then, I couldn't get the damn thing to send out an e-mail.
All I want to do is send and receive phone e-mails (or S!Mails, if you're keen). Any and all assistance will be much appreciated!
BeeGee is a GOD
Went to his website and followed the excellent step-by-step instructions and now am ridiculously happy!
Hi Everyone,
I'm bumping this thread as I'm a Softbank HD2 User. I'm currently using an iPhone Sim Card (Black one).
I was just wondering what radio you guys are using as I couldn't get a decent signal after trying so many of them.
From my experience it seems 2.15.50.14 is the best .
What about you ?
Cheers,
I.
Radio Settings
I just have it on auto-detect and haven't had any signal problems. I'm sure you've tried it already though...
You should have no problem. I am Softbank too. I have an HD2 & I finnally found a rom that will eccept the softbank MMS & Smail sending & receiving software, (Zgembo Softbank MMS). All is working great now. I had to try many roms to find one that would work, this one does. (Build 21914.5.0.93) WM 6.5 OS Version 5.2.21914.
BeeGee Link, please
I see that you all got MMS working on the HD2 + Softbank + Prepaid - would you be kind enough to post a link in BeeGee's site where the process is described?
I've been searching around there (and in XDAdevelopers) and can't seem to find that post that explains what to do to get MMS on the HTC HD2...
thanks!!
Hello guys,
Last week I have purchased on eBay what is for me the most awaited phone of all time . It was pretty expensive and I also had to pay another 120€ to the customs, but I don't regret it...
I am still getting used to the mobile & Android, but I would like to make 2 questions:
1- My 3g isn't working, GSM calls + SMS are working fine, but I cannot access any data, do I have to update any APN details ? (and how).
2- I am only offered two options regarding the phone language, En and Spanish, which is fine, but is there anyway I could add Portuguese as input language?
That's it for now, thanks in advance for any replies.
The thing is that when I browse Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access point names, I don't have any listed and neither I have an option to add a new APN ...
Ok, I have downloaded an APP from the market called APN Portugal that auto configured the APN details of my carrier (Optimus). Now I would like to know if it is possible to add a phone language/new input languages (keyboard) ?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it was unlocked by the eBay seller using a code provided by Verizon.

Hello fpont1,
I am able to receive MMS, but not to send them ... I get a msg saying that the service isn't activated with the Network.

Hi man. In the APN screen beside your APN name, is there an icon showing a small lock with a question mark inside?
