UK Touch HD & issue connecting to Telstra 850 Mhz 3G - Touch HD General

Issue connection to Telkstra UMTS 850
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi
I am in Melbourne and had purchased a Touch HD which came from UK possibly and following are the details of my handset:
ROM Version: 1.14.405.3 (22273) WWE
Rom Date: 10/24/08
Radio Version: 1.09.25.14
Protocol version: 52.49a.25.26U
I think it was shipped with possibly the following ROM and I say so because the radio and protocol versions match the ROM version below:
.
RUU_BlackStone_Orange_UK_1.14.405.3_Radio_52.49a.2 5.26_1.09.25.14_Ship.exe
ISSUE:
The issue I have noticed is that the phone doesn't connect to UMTS 850 but instead connects to 2100 or GSM TELSTRA (Australian Telecom) frequencies.
Can you please help me solve this issue and tell me if possible, what can I do to make the phone connect to Telstra 850 as that is the real 3G frequency for this service provider.
Is their a Telstra Radio ROM i can get to update and if so, how to do it? Do I need to use USPL?
Thanks for your help.
Regards
KBN

If it's a UK version I don't think it will connect to the Telstra NextG network - there's hardware differences

Knazar dont you read your previous posts? you asked the same Q in threee other threads (all were answered) then started a new one!
How about doing a little research before posting left right and center, you cannot solve the issue of Telstra UMTS because we're going to assume your HD is T8282. Infact you need T8285 to use Telstra's "rip off" Next G service. As for what ROM to flash since you have or seem to have very little experience I suggest reading over the Wiki until you have a good idea of the risks involved.

There's no way a T8282 will connect to the 850Mhz band.

Where'd you buy it? I just placed an order with Scorptec (Melbourne) and they get a lot of goods from overseas (usually Asia though).

question about band frequencies:

are the frequencies hardware bound or software bound??
i read that on the typhoon, depending on which rom you flashed, it will change from 900mhz to 850mhz, or vise versa. is this a possibility with the magician platform?
perhaps i should have been clear.
with the magician, we have a tri-band phone. most of them are 900/1800/1900mhz and US models have 850/1800/1900mhz.
with the typhoon, i read that the device is quadband capable, but only three bands are enabled at once. so you can get a audiovox smt5600, which has 850/1800/1900mhz, and flash a c500 rom to it and you will end up with a 900/1800/1900mhz device.
i always thought that the frequencies are dependent on hardware settings, but i guess there is more to it than that.
so what i am asking is, is it possible to get a lets say, qtek s100 and flash it with i-mate jam US version rom, than will it enable the 850mhz band and disable 900mhz band?
i didn't think this was so much a stupid questions....
enlighten me!
I remeber reading a thread on Modaco or Hofo a month ago about this issue. Try to search there and see if you can find the thread. The general result was that you can flash a 850 Rom on a 900 Magician and the 850 will work, the 900 will be disabled. There were a few posts there of members who confirmed it worked. However, because the radio part was designed for the 900 band, the slight change in frequencies can over time damage your radio and make it useless. So be carefull to try this. read the mentioned fora for more info.
As far as I am aware the 850/900 difference is in the radio hardware and cannot be changed in software.

i-mate Jam strange problem

Hi,
this is the first time im working with with pdas so im totally new in this area. I bought one i-mate Jam and im using ok with one card provider, yesterday i change for other provider and i dont understand why my pda cant get network with this new provider.. i try to make a manual search and no information. the pda is brand new and i also contact the provider to see if is not barred and all is 100% ok... can someone knows if this can be fixed or have any ideia about this?
regards
For sure your unit is SIM locked. There are threads on how to unlock. Please do a search.
the pda is not locked becouse acept card without any problems... the only problem is dont get network of one provider.
What are OS ROM and Radio ROM versions in your unit? If it's an old one try to upgrade to the latest. There are a number of ROM's available in the FTP
Try your new SIM in other phones and see if it works ok. Also try borrowing from friends SIM of the same provider as your new SIM as well as SIMs from other providers.
The magician is a tri-band device build in two flavors:
- 850, 1800, 1900mHz
- 900, 1800, 1900mHz
Could it be the one provider which doesn't work is operating on a non-supported band?
M
hi,
i flash this pda few hours ago and i still have the same problem.. i was looking in other sites and i found something about this problem.
Exact this models have to versions:
PM10A (900-1800-1900 mhz) and PM10C (850-1800-1900mhz) and the one that i have is PM10C. I have to find one way to convert it to PM10A so then i will be able to fix this problem.
When you find the way to change a PM10C to a PM10A or vice-versa you're the man! It's hardware specific & not build in the rom :-(
M
i know someone that can make this change but dont share with no one... i cant do a lot becouse i have only PM10c in hands and i dont have any PM10A to compare the boards.
I just did a search with the keyword "850" and there are 2 pages of threads about this. All threads confirm what what OLTP mentioned - the radio frequencies are set via hardware components and no software or hack can change it. In fact, "Reo" mentioned that he modified the hardware of his unit to make it into a 900/1800/1900 MHz unit.
The 850 and 1900 MHz frequencies are used in the USA, while the 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies are used in Asia, Australia and Europe. I'm pretty sure that your new SIM supports only the 900 MHz frequency. Ask your current provider or check their website to find out what frequency they use. If your provider supports only the 900 MHz, then your last resort is to change provider again.

Htc Touch Dual Edge

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and i have a question... I have the touch dual and the regular touch... Both devices are on the att(us) network... the touch gets edge connection with out an issue while the touch dual does not... i have the following rom on the dual...
ROM:1.31.707.09
ROM DATE 10/31/07
RADIO VERSION 1.58.16.27
Protocol Version 25.61.39.03H
can some one please help me out...
thank you,
Is your Network Type and GSM band both on Auto on the Phone Settings -> Band Tab page?
yes I have both settings set to auto...
it was confirmed that the regular touch has the 850 band even tho it is not advertised to. I know this cause I too used to own the elf and it roamed on AT&T's network when it couldnt find Cincinnati Bell Wireless network. I am not so sure the dual has this band cause I have never had the dual hit thier network.
it is weird cause the only place thet i can get edge is in midtown manhattan....
maybe the manhattan towers operate off of higher bands than the 850 band....
having the same problem no edge only g also no 3g since at&t is on a different 3g band as well if you find a solution please post or message me would greatly appreciate it.
looking for the australia telstra radio and rom since they do have the touch dual working on there 850 mhz 3 g network

Telstra HD2 - (Australian Users)

Can Australian users please tell me which radio rom they're using and whether they've had any problmes with the one they use?
I'm currently using "Radio 2.08.50.08_2" and the person on the other side of the phone seems to fade in and out, so i'm always asking them to repeat themselves...
When that happens, I look at the phone and there's almost full bars of reception.
I've also tried Radio "2.07.50.27_2" but that sems to do the same thing.
Thanks guys
hi mate,, my ROM version is 1.49.841.1(71528)wwwe

hi anish.. fellow aussie!
i forgt to mention that i'm using Optus in Australia (using Dutty's 1.5 ROM)... i actually did try using the 2.05.51.11 when i first got the the fone... didnt actually notice any problems in that first day or two.
There's been so many newer versions since 2.05 and i'm hoping that someone has used a newer version and found it have no problems.
i'm just praying the problems i'm arent hardware-related

I'm on Telstra and haven't noticed any issues
Hey,
I'm a high user of the next G network and I'm using radio 2.08 and I have no issues whatsoever.
Using Radio 2.08.50.08_2 and Miri's Version 6 Xtralite ROM on an HD2 bought from Telstra
SIM is 3G Telstra
No issues whatsoever - a clean ROM without Telstra's marketing straight-jacket, all radio functions (GSM/GPRS/3G/BT/GPS/WiFi) work perfectly, battery consumption minimal, Telstra's Roam works perfectly in other countries
In short, the best PDA I've ever had ... I like Acer's S200 very much as well, but its' hardware cannot access the UMTS 850Mhz frequency that Telstra uses in regional areas of Aus - the Telstra HD2 is hardware-unblocked for this frequency, of course
bobb
Unfortunately your problems is a hardware one. To have maximum optus coverage on 3g you need 2100 and 900 frequencies
The Telstra HD2 works on 850 and 2100, so you lose the 900 coverage, and can only run off 2100.
To maximise coverage you would need a new phone, or switch to Telstra
FWIW I've found the 2.07.51.22_2 radio best onTelstra so far (using stock HTC 1.66 wwe ROM)
t9193 from telstra
ozrom 1.60 6.5.5
2.08 radio
hobart tas
no problems at all, actually got better with all the latest
good luck

Agreed, of course. If you purchased an HD2 from Telstra, it is hardware-filtered for UMTS 2100/850 Mhz. Optus broadcasts for 3G on UMTS 2100/900 Mhz, so Optus 3G will not work in regional areas on a Telstra-bought device - both devices will work on UMTS 2100 Mhz in the larger cities for 3G
That said, Telstra 3G area (distance) coverage at 850Mhz is very much larger than Optus 3G at 900Mhz
If you want an Optus 3G HD2, use an HD2 from (say) a UK supplier - this will be hardware-filtered for 2100/900 Mhz. For Optus, a cheaper (much) and equally powerful device is an Acer S200 from a UK dealer
None of this affects the GSM segment (normal phone conversations) of these devices
Email - through Telstra
I have no problems using Telstra and either stock or custom ROMs - except for emails.
For the life of me I can only send/receive emails when wi-fi is turned on.
It will NOT send/receive emails when wi-fi is turned off.
So I presume it is some settings.....
At the moment in Settings – connections – connection – advanced tab – select networks...
Telstra Internet (top pull down)
My Work Network (bottom pull down)
Any good suggestions ppl?
Cheers
FG
I use both Telstra and Vodafone in Oz and the best radio by far is 2.07.51.22_2.
No problem with email either way.
Cheers
radio
I'm using radio 2.08 and I have no issues whatsoever
I've found various differences between radio version on Telstra...but none of them are too bad really...
Telstra is a bad boy

Telstra stock ROM forces you to use proxy, with Telstra stock ROM you cannot untick the proxy. Telstra proxy blocks email sync unless you pay $7 per month.
Use other ROM, go to comm manager, menu, connections, you'll see "Telstra internet" and "setup my proxy server", untick "this network uses a proxy..."
In my case email works after removing the proxy.

Actually, I am using a "clean" non branded HD2...and as of last weekend have a custom Rom on it - although previous HTC ROM was good....but no email with either of them.....
Till now...!
Many Thanks....your solution worked for me
I'm using a Telstra version HD2 but on at&t 3G in the US. I am using radio 2.08.50.08_2 and haven't hadany issues at all.
Thanks guys
I forgot to mention that I tried switching the phone to 2G only before and the problem was still there.
I took into consideration the 850/900Mhz hardware issue at the time I bought the phone, but i wanted it so badly that i got the telstra one anyway because it's not often I venture into the regional areas where Optus operate their 3G 900Mhz system. Plus it was cheap on the telstra staff plan..
I flashed another ROM yesterday (Dutty's HG V1.2) that comes with the 2.08 radio - the problem didnt appear in any of the calls last night, so hopefully it's gone for good!
btw.. it's great to see other aussies on this board and their willingness to help out!
Nice to see people helping out. Yes the proxy thing is a problem so keep it unchecked
Cheers

I think those that responded earlier were well-intentioned but your initial complaint had nothing to do with carrier frequency differences.
Personally - though I'm not in aus - I had horrible luck with the 2.08.50.08_2 radio, but much better with 2.08.50.05, which I am currently running.
If you look at the recent radios for our phone, you'll see some themes in the naming convention. Namely, 50., 51., and _2.
The 51 radios are NOT 512MB enabled, I know that for sure. I'm not positive on the exact difference between normal 50 and _2, but I know I get better performance, battery life, and audio quality with the 50!
In any case, that's my ramble, glad to hear you got it solved. If it comes back, just flash down to a different radio. Don't go before 2.06 if you're gonna use 'newer' ROMs, or your phone won't work!

I disagree with the " ... nothing to do with carrier frequency differences" section of your post
On the information supplied in the initial post, connecting to the internet for email transfer may well have been the underlying issue.
As it transpired, the poster doesn't much "venture" out of the city (predatory, carnivorous kangaroos, you know) so UMTS frequency in regional areas was not important

[Q] Vodafone AU on T-Mobile HD2 - 3G reception problems

Hey everyone
I just bought a t mobile hd2 and i love what you could do with it.
But im having minor problems with coverage as it keeps dropping from 3g every 5 seconds and it makes it hard to surf the net.
Im using it in australia on vodafone.
Can this be simply fixed by flashing a new radio? Im currently using v 2.10.50.26.
Or is it a hardware issue?
You could try a new radio, have you checked with your network to see that quality of service you can expect?
ye i used to have a htc magic and the coverage pretty good, it was smooth and didnt drop 3g connection as frequent as my hd2

yes you should try flashing a new radio.
I will suggest a 2.15xx.50 Radio as they seem to compatible with MAGLDR as well should you in future want to try Windows Phone or Android NAND.
Also the HD2 is a pretty badass phone when it comes to radio communication.
It has one of the best receivers so dropping 3G might not be an issue anymore.
But in case you still experience it..my bet shall be that you might have an internal radio defect. (MAYBE)

I'm having the exact same scenario problem and wondering if A new radio helped you >>>
vodafone AU
Hi, I've got a Telstra HD2 and I had similar issues when using a vodafone sim in Sydney. I changed my radio to: 2.15.50.40 and I get proper reception with android nand, wp7
Are you using wm6.5?
You need UMTS(900+2100) GSM(900+1800) frequencies for vodafone
Not UMTS(850+1900) GSM(850+1900)
Hey mate thanks for the reply
Yes the operating system is wm6.5, Do u reckon i need to change to wp7 ?
My current radio is 2.08.50.08_2 and I will be updating it tonight to the 2.15.50.40 and see how it goes.
As for UMTS/GSM I'm a bit confused, The seller's specs were
Band : WCDMA (UMTS) / GSM 850/900/1800/1900
I've read somewhere that vodafone uses in metro areas 2100Mhz and in regional areas 900Mhz?
Would switching to Telstra fix the problem ?
Again thanks for your help!
