I got my X1 in Dec 08 and the screen has now become unresponsive.
I thought it could possibly be an error in a ROM i used but I took it back to original settings (original ROM on SPL) and still nothing.
has anyone else experienced this problem?
You can try installing X1 SoftTouch which will max out the responsiveness of your touchscreen in the registry without having to calibrate. I'm not highly optimistic it will work in your case but it won't hurt to try. The .cab is here:

I had the same problem a while ago because I left the protector on the display. It would appear it somehow disabled the touchscreen, perhaps of statics or whatever. Anyway, after removing the protector and putting it back i place, everything was fine again. Tried a Reset before, too Hope this solves your problem. Of course it won't if you arent using a protector. Anyway, I would also recommend you to try several things regarding static, such as rubbing a wool sweater against the screen or make a contact with metal (I'm not too familiar with how thinks work on the electric level, so feel freee to ask your local electrician ;D)
cheers
its still not working. think ill just claim it on insurance and get a new one
Try re-calibrating maybe ??
I did try that. it literally doesn't even recognise any touchno matter how much pressure is used.

It seems that as of late I have to re-align my screen almost on a daily basis. It will be ok vertically, but horizontally it seems that it's always shifting.
Has anyone else ran into this?
Yep, I've run into it. Sometimes it can go days without having to realign it, other times I have to realign it every 15 minutes. Seriously. I thought it might have something to do with opening and closing the keyboard but it's been hit and miss so far. I can't prove that it and I can't prove that it isn't. Sure would be nice to figure out what it is, however, and have it fixed.
How do you carry your phone around? Do you keep it in a case on a belt clip or do you keep it in a front pocket of your pants? If you do not use a case then try it for a few days and see if this helps with the alignment problem. (Body heat and/or pressure on the screen may cause the alignment to drift.)
This is a know hardware defect. It should be covered by your warrenty. T-Mobile exchanged mine with no problem.
Mine had the same issue but it hasnt been an issue since the 2.26 update on Tmo.
I had my phone replaced and it's still having the alignment issue. This sucks bad. Realigning and resets doesn't help!

Getting rid of magic button and vbar, if you run those apps, did the trick for me...I switched to wisbar desktop and ever since I have not had to realign my screen once in 2 months
I'm going to try this out and let everyone know. I'm having the terrible screen alignment problems (I at first thought that it was the keyboard and switching landscape mode) but I have magic button installed. Going to try the switch to wisbar lite and see if that helps. Does anyone know if the business card trick for the hermes will help with this?
I think it is a hardware defect, i have problems with mine, not only i have to re-align it often, my screen is also not responding to touch either. (from time to time).
Not to respond right away without extensive testing, but I did just put on wisbar lite and noticed a definite improvement in aligment (certainly seemed better than magic button) someone else should try this too and see if they notice an improvement.
I was having this issue for awhile. The card trick had helped on my previous 8125 but not this time. Carrying it in the case instead of my pocket seems to help quite a bit. The issue also seemed to be affected by pushing on the plastics around the screen so that might be a clue right there too.

Sounds similar to my fix of pushing on the plastics all the way around. I haven't really had this problem since I did so and I have only had to realign it a couple of times in the last few weeks.
my phone's alignment used to get screwed up multiple times a day.
I took the stupid stick on screen protector off it though and haven't had that problem nearly as often. I maybe realign once a week, and when I do, it's only because it's off just a bit.
I had alignment problems frequently a few months ago but it is all history now.
1) Fix current alignment problem.
Just make sure you confirm if it is a hardware defect first, by checking the tiny gaps between the touchscreen and the casing for dust particles. Use a high power scope(I work in a semicon backend company so no problems getting one). Clean the gaps all around the touchscreen. See if that fixes your alignment problem. If it does, then probably your screen has some electronic problems(claim warranty).
2) Protect your screen from pressure at ALL times except when you use it with your stylus or finger.
I carry my Wizard in my pocket with a plastic transparent plate covering the entrie screen(ala HP's RW6828 forgot that model already).. Have been doing this since last year and no alignment required since last year...
Just wonder why HTC doesn't make it an option of have the protective screen on their devices... Beats having a bulky casing..
Permanent fix for Alignment problem in 10 seconds
Well I read many posts and finally came to the conclusion that the best and permanent fix for the alignment problem is as under.
Slide out the keyboard, you will find 2 screws at the back. Loosen them and then retighten them but not as hard as they originally were but lightly.
Presto
Problem solved.
U will never see your screen misalign again.
Thanks
software problem
The original Cingular wm5 rom had this alignment problem, I flashed NBD's WM6 v5.1 rom and it was fixed. I tried other wm6 roms with mixed results, some would get misaligned, others alignment stays perfect. Anyway the NBD rom just works, improves battery life, speed, I could go on all day.

My touch screen has been getting out of alignment quite often. 3 or 4 times a day. I'll go to use it after leaving it on standby, and the touch screen alignment will be off by a half centimeter or more. its making very difficult to use. Sometimes very difficult to even get to the settings screen to realign it. I'm using a screen protector and to use my fingers instead of the stylus often. could have of this be having an affect? or does anyone have any idea whats goign on? thank you for any help you can give me.
Dan
I had a similar problem as well. Its kinda scary. Do you think its a software error? or could it be hardware *gulp*
I had this problem with some devices I issued out at work. I put screen protectors on them, and all kind of weirdness happened, and the screen getting out of alignment was one of them. I removed the screen protectors, and the problem went away.
Wizard platform has often that claim from many users. I'm not sure if working without screen protector is suitable for you and don't know it will help. In my case it did not.
The problem of kJAMs is related to the screens HTC used on this version. Unfortunately there is not software remedy. Some users attempted to change their devices under guarantee. Some are telling newer ROMs make the error less frequently.
You may also use "fire button + messaging button" combination as a shortcut to screen alignment page if you must live with this. Better than nothing ?!
fixed my qtek 9100
Well my wizard used to go out of alignment a lot. But I basically ruined it when I stuck it in my golf bag one day and let it get partially crushed while half-open...
The screen started to flicker a lot (in addition to not registering touch inputs). after a week it was unusable except by me since I knew where to push to get it to work.
Anyways, I gave up and asked around Hong Kong for people who can fix these PDAs. I found a store that offered to bring it to a specialist (no name given) for $380 hkd (~$50USD). Figured I had nothing to lose.
It actually works almost like new now. The slider is tighter, and the screen doesn't go out of alignment at all. I'd almost say its perfect except the "specialist" "broke" my volume slider when fixing it. Its not major so I decided against taking it back to the store for further repairs (3 month warranty on their work). But it took 3-4 days for them to fix.
I figure someone with the screwdrivers and stuff can probably fix your problem. But I didn't have the guts to try it myself...
Four things you can do to help
1. After time dust etc... gets under the rim of the screen and adds to the misalignment problem. Get a piece of paper and put the corner under the rim and get all the dirt out.
2. Sometimes software causes the misalignment - in my case it was using vjtoggletoday - so check or your software particular ones that change your today screen e.g. wisbar etc...
3. You could do a hard reset and try device in factory state for a while to see if it is a software or hard ware problem
4. Update to the latest rom.
Thanks for your help guys. Even though i didn't like your answers. I tried cleaning dust from under the border of the screen. It worked well for now. but it hasn't been more than 12 hours. I hope it continues. If i cant get it to stop i might have to sell my phone on ebay. they seem to go for only 50 dollars less on ebay than i payed for it in the first place. I hate to ask this question. but what could i replace this phone wiht that wont have this problem. and has windows? Basically what would you suggest as a replacement. And not the TytTn because i dont think i'll be able to afford that one.
Thank you.
lets hope that i dont have to fish dust out of my phone every day.
I've had my 8525 for about 3 months, and now it constantly clicks the upper right hand corner and exits all of my programs! I'll soft-reset and sometimes it wont boot up, it just hangs at the windows logo screen. I upgraded the ROM to the newest from Cingular thinking it was some program that was doing it, but it comes back.
When it's in portrait mode, it's the upper right hand corner. When it's in landscape, it clicks the start button(upper left) so I dont think its a program thats making it click, but something physical touching that certain spot. Anyone have any idea?! I thought something was stuck in there but it's clean.. this is so annoying, I cant even make a call since it clicks exit when it comes up! It stops SOMETIMES for a few minutes but then it comes back after a while.. anyone else?
Give it a yung choo kung foo whack, take a run-up.
...
Sounds knackered, you could try the screen alignment fix, pressure from the gasket may be causing this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=How to fix the Screen Aligment issue
Your best bet is to send it back for repair though .
I bought it off ebay.. so no warranty
It's weird because I take a very slim credit card( 1/2 the thickness as regular cards) and slide it in and bring up the plastic around the screen and it STILL does it!! nothing is touching the screen at all. Also, my alignment is still spot on perfect.. what gives?
Oh yeah, I did smack it a few times and it works sometimes.. It's been okay right now for about an hour but I know it's going to be short lived..
Did you try loosening the screws?

Yours is the third or forth report of that error. My Trion had the exact same problem, and I needed to exchange it (bought it new from O2, so it was under warranty).
None of the screen alignment fixes I tried made any difference. The problem was also temperature dependent - when the Trion was cold, everything was okay. Leaving backlight on and listening to MP3s for five minutes was enough to make the problem appear - first, only a few fake 'taps', then more and more, and eventually the screen didn't recognize any of my taps at all.
So it seems to be a hardware issue. The only software solution I could think of: back in WM 2003 days, there was a registry setting to increase/decrease the touchscreen sensitivity. If it still exists in WM5 (don't know, sorry. Others may be able to tell you), you could try setting it to be quite insensitive. Might help.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply, now that I think of it, it only happens when it's warm. Looks like I'm SOL. Oh well, I guess ill put up with it until the iPhone comes out.. ill try loosening the screws too.
Your case is putting pressure on that part of your screen. It is not device specific. Slip a piece of paper under the case to check for clearance. I use under the case screen protectors and have seen this before. You may be able to simple pry the case and create some clearance.
I have exactly the same symptoms. It seems the registry settings do not exist in the Hermes to adjust the sensitivity so I am thinking return for replacement must be the only option. Argh! I feel defeated

The iPhone? You're going to actually exchange this beautiful piece of full-fledged mini-computer &phone in one goodness for an iPhone? Note: This was not meant to flame anything or anybody. If you feel that I have, I deeply apologise.

I've inserted a small piece of plastic between the frame and the screen (one month ago).
Here you will find a resume of proposed working solutions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1056346&postcount=227
Can you tell us the serial of your Hermes? (HTC62xxxxx, 63, 64)
That is the same problem I had with my 8525. I tried ALL the solutions here in the forum but nothing solved it. I finally returned it to Cingular and they gave me a brand new one with zero hassle. Two weeks in on the new one, and it's working like a champ (knock on wood).
the S/N is HT657xxxx
Nothing is putting pressure on the screen, I've pried some clearence between that part of the screen and it still does it. I dont even have a Cingular account, so I doubt they'd help me
My only other option is to take it apart(following the japanese website instructions) and see what's going on.. Maybe something underneath the screen is doing it? I dont know..
Oh yeah, not only did i loosen the screws behind the screen but I completely removed them and it STILL does it. I found the registry setting for screen sensitivity and lowered it from 7,xxxx to 5,xxx and it did nothing..
well, my htc touch a while developed this look in certain lighting conditions with the screen backlight off that can only be described as looking like a opilspill, and i thought it might of been the touchscreen layers seperating, but untill just now it still worked fine so i wasnt too bothered, was working great one miniute and the next miniute i went to send a text and the touchscreen wasent responding. i tried a hard and soft reset , nothing and right now im extremly pi**ed off as i loved that phone and havent really got the cash for another one .
my question is what is the lightlyhood that the only thing gone is the digitiser, and has anyone used any of them dodgey chinese sellers on ebay as thats the only place i can fine them i dont wanna be leaving XDA developers so early
any advice will be aprieciated, feel like a famy pet jus died or summan
EDIT: dont think its relevent but im using the blue elves rom v6 i think
well you can try mymobiler and use your pc to try and correct any issues
i think the issue might be hardware as i have done a hard reset, did try using mymobiler just to use the phone after i had hard reset, but its either a bug or the way that the touchpads calibrated that i cant now after a hard reset.
what happens is the inital tap the screen to setup, that works, but mymobiler wont allow me to to the screen taps to calibrate.
Back to the box than till i can find a faulty one on ebay in the uk
Find another faulty one of eBay? Why not send it in to HTC and make use of their manufacturer warranty, hopefully its still covered. But worth a shot.
am going to do just that. it was definatly the digitiser have managed to get tho old digitiser working in a strange way, just pressure over time, am posting on it now, but its gonna need replacing but at least I got my phone back thanks everybody
what you are describing is newton rings
Beware of HTC's large screen phones.
Any force applied to them, even taking off a screen protector, is enough to produce "newton rings" and the screen stops responding to touch.
Not much use for a touch screen phone.
HTC refuse to cover this by warranty and refuse to negotiate. expect to shell out up to $500 to repair it. With no guarantee that the next screen won't do the same thing.
Design or Materials fault but they won't cover it by warranty.
well at least i know what caused it, sorted it a while back by replacing the digitsier myself. ended up getting it from the chinese ebay seller. before that i took out the digitiser, applied weight to the top and froze it lol, it worked but i replaced the digitiser anyway.
thanks for all your replys
Well, the touchscreen just doesn't respond both fingers or stylus.
Have no idea what could had caused the problem.
It seems that everything else is alright, w/hardware keyboard out image turns landscape...just doesn't respond to touches.
Should I return my phone?
Is it a warranty case?
Has anybody experienced anything similar?
Do you have a screen protector on your screen? If yes, try removing it (You can put it back afterwards). I have experienced this very problem. Another attempt is a Hardreset. If none of that helps, go for warranty.
Well, there wasn't a screen protector and I already tried hard reset - still, no response. I tried flashing a number of ROMs, they installed, but can't use 'em - since I can't finish "screen calibration"...
I guess it just shows that the problem is a hardware one.

Most definitely. It can be a problem with statics, maybe this can help you a little bit further. Also try touching in the corners of the screen (REALLY in the corners). Then go for warranty.
Well, thanks a lot!
Phone's being serviced, gonna take sometime for sure...
I've got this three times now - and it somehow worked again after a day or two. It happend always after I was cleaning the screen.
So my first thougt was, that a little bit of the window cleaner I used went into the device and short-circuit something. And when this drop of cleaning liquid dries, everything works normal. Makes sense, but that wasn't the problem.
At the third time, I discovered, that sometimes when I touched the non-reacting screen, the startmenu opens. Which made me recognize, that there must be something in the very upper left corner always "pressing" the screen. And so it was: With a brush (those which comes with an electric shaver) I was able to remove a noteworthy amount of dust/dirt. After that the screen instantly works fine.
