Why do i need to install a new ROM? - Touch HD General

Sorry for another noob question, but i own a blackstone for 2 weeks now and
i'm trying to realize why there are so many different ROMs out there.
* i'm not asking a "which rom question", just trying to learn more.
So.. i have a new blackstone with WM6.1 and TF3d. why do i need to install
a ROM anyway? i know i don't have to, but i see many people talking about it
and i feel that i'm missing something.

I would say... if you are happy with your ROM, there's no reason to change. In general, the usual reasons are:
- Your ROM is branded (Orange, T-Mobile...) and you don't need the 'extras' that your carrier has included in default ROM.
- You want to make some 'tuning' or your device and someone has cooked a ROM which includes all the patches, tricks and regisitry changes that will make your device better
- There are new versions of TF3D, camera program, or any other default program and HTC does not offer these updates to you, are only included in a new device; however you will always find a cooked ROM where these updates are included.
- Customization: Some cooked ROMs include nice TF3D customization, wallpapers, and a set of finger-friendly applications pre-installed. If you are bored with default settings and you don't like to spend much time downloading & trying things, a new ROM could be an option.
I'm still using the ROM that came with my unit.

My personal reason to flash a new (custom) rom, is to get more out of the HD then HTC give me originally. I just knew it had more potential (and I was right ). Plus, I like to play around with PC's, gadgets etc.

What's all this about newer radio versions?

Why do people rebuild old cars? why add 4-barrel carb and headers ect. Many reasons many cooked roms preform better than stock. other include apps in the rom not included by your vender. Others flash just to tinker, its fun to try the newest latest. Mosttly its to customize what you have and make it diffrent from the 100,000 other HDs

I would be very cautious about flashing your device with unofficial ROMs. While making a few improvements they carry a potentially large number of glitches. So if you're an adventurous type, go for it. Otherwise stick to the official ROM.

Link to new radio's thread here and flashing radio's in wiki here
The radio provides improvements on the GSM radio stack and this has effect on the GSM signal, AT command interface, GSM data modem (3G, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, etc...) functionality that is controlled by the Radio Interface Layer (RIL). The radio stack has nothing to do with WiFi or bluetooth -- it is only for the GSM/WCDMA(3G) part of the device.
Newer radio's our released which may improve GSM signal, although certain radio's work better for different countries/areas.

Ok now i get it.
I have the original ROM that came with my device and after i've found out why
people change their ROMs i think it doesn't really worth it.
The only thing i've found useful is changing my radio version, which works really
good. so now i have radio v1.12 installed.
Of course i like to tweak my device and configure it to my own needs, but for
this reason i've installed many apps without flashing a cooked ROM.

There is also some fixes which have been released by HTC for screen flickering etc which can be found on their website here

If you install a new ROM version, is possible the to put the old (original) version back to your HTC (abd howw to do that) or is too late then ?

Installed these fixes as well, but i wish HTC had more stuff in their website to download. Like newer radio versions for example?
Anyway i'm glad we can find all these things here on XDA-developers.

Welcome to xda developers!!

What a warm welcome that guy got.
It answered most of the question I have about using cooked (non-official) roms too.
If we are using non official ROMs can we still change the TF3D theme's and look of the Touch HD?
I am having trouble finding the best set of applications to replace the calendar, mail, SMS etc etc... I guess this is a regular question, BUT any suggestions?

Not to make you feel left out....Welcome to xda developers!!
There are numerous different themes and applications you can use to change your phones appearance. They can all be found in the applications forum located here. Do a general search for what you are looking for i.e. themes or calendar and see what threads aleady exist before creating any new ones. An example of a thread is this one Customizing TF3D - The Collection!
Hope this helps

UK O2 ROM - How many people switched to a cooked one?

Guys, just wondering, I can't find anything conclusive over how many people have actually moved away from the UK O2 ROM to a cooked one. Can anyone who has made the jump tell me if there was a noticeable difference and what ROM you used. Also, were they functional for everyday use?
I will be moving to a cooked ROM later, but for the time being I have gone from the o2 rom to the HTC one on the FTP.
I'm happier with it. All the HTC stuff that o2 seem to uninstall (because they are losers) is there without any need to install it all yourself.
I can't see any reason to change as yet unless there is a good cooked rom a la meschle's Touch 4.0.
Likewise, I'll be moving to a cooked rom, but am waiting for someone to make the leap first!
Any reports (successful or otherwise) will be great!
Hey guys
I've been running Bepe's 6.1 preview for the last week. To be honest, the only improvement is the threaded messaging.
I found the o2 rom quite good, but if there's something to flash I'll always give it a go. By the time you've added all your own apps it really doesn't make a huge difference.
App wise I'm running:
Vistahide battery gauge
Samsung time
o2 plus2.3 - with shortcuts & diary enabled
Spb pocket suite
Not that that has anything to do with the rom!?!
Has anyone over here tried upgrading the radio to 1.58.25.14?
Jamie
I'm still on the o2 rom, with:
PocketRAR
ClearTemp
Schap's Advanced Configuration Tool
HTC Home plugin
Home Customizer
WkTask (I really like the battery meeter along the top and the task buttons)
Until a stable WinMo 6.1 rom comes out with everything I'll stick with the o2 rom.
Why they removed the HTC home I'll never know

Me, but have not noticed any difference.
I think we should start a campaign to get meschle to defect to polaris. I have already donated to towards this campaign. We would need to set up a new thread and link it to the artemis wm6 thread.
The biggest problem with the O2 ROM is that tweaks don't work. You can change a registry value and after a soft-reset it will go back to the original value. Annoying!
That's why I use that tweaking tool, it actually sets the values. Although it's not as exansive as a registry
i'm in the US using a UK Orbit 2 and i've been running the .53 version of bepe's WM 6.1 ROM. aside from the improved responsiveness and threaded messaging, you start out with 140MB of available storage and 69MB of available RAM. with all my programs loaded, i have 85 MB available, which is important to me. with the stock ROM, i started off with 89MB available before loading my standard set of apps. i've held off using newer versions because i'm happy with what i have and how it's working so far.

What tweaking tool? The Kaiser one? I thought that messed peoples device up.
Don't see why I would want to flash for the time being.
To me, flashing a rom is so that I don't need to spend so much time configuring the device (because everything is pre-configured in cooked roms). And as there ain't many changes to the current cooked roms, it is quicker to configure the device than to mess with flashing.

You'll never find the best ROM suited to your specific taste unless you try 'em all. Me? i'm totally sold out with Panosha's Butterfly ROM but at the moment am testing Bepe's v0.56 Full, and so far, liking it too! Cooked ROM's are always way faster and more responsive than the shipped one's.

Touch Flo v.3.0 available on HD?

Simple question.
I've read about the new features of the 3rd version of Touch Flo (on the upcoming HTC Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2) and they are quite interesting.
I just wondered whether by any chance this new version could be installed on the HTC HD (once it's out of course)
Thx

well... i always do my home work before posting, that is why i did ask question...i could not find any cab, and believe me i spent hours looking throughout our gigantic forum...

There is no "cab" install and there never will be.
This isn't just an application you install on your phone - it's a complete system overhaul, with new TF3D, with all new and / or updated system applications: phone, calendar, contacts, call history, calculator, browser etc.
Let me illustrate however the difference between the stock ROM and the custom cooked ROM's available here on XDA. It's like going from Skoda to latest Ferrari.
That means you'll get a lot of great looking stuff, many cool applications already included, everything will be as new as possible, you'll be running at MUCH faster speed, but you also have to accept that you'll "burn more gas" - battery life may take a small impact.
Is it worth it? Well, it's like you bought a new device, so - yes.

If you flash a ROM that already includes the new manila it will probably be alot smoother because the ROM will be optimized and tweaked for it! If you install it over the old Manila it probably won't give you the best experience... Also, the newer ROMs not only include the new Manila, but also things like finger-friendly menus!
really is that true???

I'm pretty new to all this as well and had a lot of difficulty figuring it out! What I think happens is this: The ROM is a bit like the BIOS so you can't modify it within WM6.1. Also, the original ROMs are protected so you can't replace them with an unofficial version (they are signed).
To get around this, you can use something like Hard SPL (which overwrites the existing ROM) or USPL (which works around it).
I finally went with USPL2.5 and Dutty's extreme ROM v2.6.
Incidentally, I'm not really noticing much of a speed improvement... Especially with the music player which now takes a second to load up... Am I meant to?

[Q] Beginner needs answer

Hello, I just registered to the forum. I was going round the threads, I have read some tutorials, but I didn't really find an answer to my question.
I'm going to buy a touch HD in switzerland. Maybe I will buy the german version. I can speak german but I don't know if it will be really comfortable for me. That's why I was reading the tutorial on how to use the xxxxship.exe (changing your device to a new version).
BUT if I don't have problems with the language, and the language is fine I understand all and I don't need to change to english or italian (my motherlanguage)....are there reasons that I should change something to the phone?
Everybody here on the forum is using custom roms, is adding - deleting applications and so on. Is the 'normal' version so bad?
As a beginner, what do you recommend me to do with a factory-new touch HD? Update WM to 6.5 ? Try immediately a custom rom from XDA ?
Thanks and sorry if i wrote stupid questions, the forum is really big and difficult to understand for a beginner.
No reasons, If you use official ROMs without problems (too slow, some problem with some programs, you want new components but HTC doesn't etc) else you could stay with it.
I preferred use HardSPL and Cooked ROMs (see my signature) because TIM ROM is horrible and old... now my HD is better functional
D'rath
Hi rogermorse, welcome to the world of windows mobile!
As a beginner, its not necessary to change your rom - the official one works fine. You want to get the hang of windows mobile first before attempting any flash. I do have to say that WM has a bit of a learning curve but once you get past that its really good all-rounder device that is very useful in many occasions. Just trying out all the apps (free and commercial) available out there will keep you busy for awhile. Also you will be able to see whether your device has any hardware faults after using it for a month (if faulty most conk out sooner than later). Remember also that changing to an unofficial rom will void your warranty... you want all faults ironed out before you change rom because sometimes you physically cannot reflash back to an official rom for service.
Cooked roms here mostly focus on tweaks, stability and speed and some graphically enhanced. As new devices come out, their OS and default application packages are updated - these are ported to our device so we can also enjoy these updates.
Its a whole new world once you get on the bandwagon!!!
Best advice would be get used to your own phone and stock rom first. Read the manual, read the wiki. Get used to all the functions.
If you are happy with phone, then excellent. If however you are not happy with certain software/functions. Search for fixes and read up on them. If in future you would like to change to a cooked rom, again, search and then read up on them.
Also there are not only faults in the Stock ROM, in the custom ROMs there are newer applications and builds of the operating system. Some even have (or most of them nowadays) Windows 6.5 and/or Touch Flo 3D 2.5, which is better looking and has more functions.

T-Mobile stock ROM is 100% trash, looking for a new one !

Well guys, after a couple weeks with the stock TMOBILE rom I conclude that it's just USELESS.
I can't even use the phone... It's getting stuck when I'm trying to call someone, stuck when viewing images, stuck stuck stuck, at least 5 times a day.
Plus a million SOD's a day... I tried everything, from losing all apps, to modifying the registry.
I NEED A NEW ROM
But there are so many over there, I do not know what to choose.
I need:
1. As little visual tweaks as possible, i'd like to take care of that myself (CHT Cooked in is fine though)
2. Maximum system stability and performance, I DON'T WANT HANGS FROM SIMPLE OPERATIONS SUCH AS CALLING SOMEONE
3. No bloatware
4. Not much bugs (ie good support, constantly worked on, not a 1 time "job" )
Basically If it can resemble the stock one, but with more stability, tweaks and performance boosts, then i'm happy.
I have the sticky flashing manual in hand, so all I need is a recommendation.
Looking forward to flashing this thing today, thank you very much XDA.
Energy ROM Cookie's Reference ROM
this is a custom rom close to stock as you're going to get, please make sure you read loads before flashing.

Or the standard sense reference or full. I recommend using the 23569 builds as well. more finger friendly and slightly quicker. Also there is an advantage with the full version in that if you wish to update the rom in future you can backup your settings using the energy settings exporter and then reimport them.
regarding the builds mentioned - can you expand ? links ?
thanks !
Exporter sounds GREAT.
Basically there are two builds of almost all the custom roms. One build will be the latest 6.5 build (21907, same WM version as the stock roms but with some bug fixes) then there is the 23569 (or higher) builds. These are WM 6.5.5. Some big changes here to the way the start menu works and also to the UI to make it more finger friendly. It's also a little quicker than WM 6.5 but (apparently. i've not found any yet) more buggy then WM 6.5. Also as i said (and i've now checked this) custom roms also include newer, less buggy, versions of sense (AKA manilla)
I suggest EnergyROM
Great, I think I will go for Energy.Leo.23569.Sense2.5.Cookie.Reference.Jun.26.7z
Is that OK for me ? (well, is it better than what i have now )
Is there a settings exporter in Energy.Leo.21907 ?
If you have the T-Mobile US HD2, make sure you use the right radio for your device.
That would do nicely although i don't know if it includes the exporter tool. You may want to look at the full cht version.
Good point about the radio. I have a UK version so i can use whatever i want. The right radio roms for the TMOUS devices have verison numbers that look like this: 2.xx.50.xx. the 50 bit is important as radios with the 50 in it have the unlock code for the extra ram in them and are compatible with the 1024MB rom chips. Also never ever use a radio with a version number like this: 2.xx.51.xx. The 51 radios will brick your phone and they can not be recovered as far as i am aware.
And yes afaik there is a setting exporter in the WM 6.5 builds
My radio is 2.10.50.26
Is that OK ?
Just how much faster is the 6.5.5 over the regular one ? I'm not liking that lower start button anyway so if it's not really faster i'll pass.
Looks kinda like an iPhone.. Less " serious "
m3ph - what ROM have you had in mind with the Exporter build in and the upper start button and CHT ?
I thank you for all the help... I am feeling positive about my HD2 again.. Can't wait to flash it !
Just making sure I get everything right about all the different Energies so I don't reflash and reflash a thousand times... Making a concious decision

Does it have the exporter for future upgrades ?
Looks like i'm fixed then ! Thanks ! What version is the faulty Sense that thinks your sister is your best mate ? hahah

What a coincidence. I'm also having lots of problems with my TMobile UK Rom, same freezing, etc.
I have seen quite a few Roms that I'd be interested, but most of them don't mention whether they will work with a locked T-Mobile handset, and if they do, it only refers to TMobile US version.
Will any Rom work on a T-Mobile UK locked handset, or would I also have to flash a new radio. I have 2.07.50 at the moment.

if you have a wifi router in your house get wifi remote access. It allows you to transfer files to and from the phone using a web interface over the wifi. It also allows you to edit the registry "remotely". Really handy little tool that.
Also have a look at omarket. some handy tools can be got from there but be careful not everything is Leo compatible.
Coreplayer is handy if you wanna watch tv shows or movies. just set the video mode to raw frambuffer if the picture looks scrambled. This one isn't free but is definitely worth paying for coz tcpmp (it's free cousin) isn't as good. I also use srs WOWHD with this to improve the sound. look for 1.5 V2.
The only more i can say is use a PIM backup tool regularly. something like MS myphone or PIMBackup. Saves some time if you don't have an exchange server to store you contacts, mail etc

My advice to you would be to stick to a rom that says it is tmous compatible. that way it will work on any leo but the phone will still be sim locked. so if you wanted to sim unlock it you would need to get an unlock code from TMOUK

[ROM]|"SensePhone"|WM6.5.3|23152|Sense 2018|3.14.531.1|

Introduction:
I have been around for a few years "cooking" Windows Mobile ROMs for various CDMA devices from the Titan and ending with the Rhodium. I took a break form Windows Mobile and bought an EVO and had cook a few android ROMS, but had gotten very bored with the lack of internal customization of Android, so I decided to buy another WM 6.5 phone and restart my favorite pass-time hobby.
Concept:
The "concept" of this ROM is based off of what HTC did with its Sense interface and how deeply HTC embedded Sense within the Android OS. I like using Sense on Windows Mobile and wanted to do the same with what I believe HTC should have done with WM 6.5.3, so this ROM is alot different from your normal ROM as it is solely based and dependant on Sense.
Features:
This is not a "feature" ROM in fact most of your normal Sense features like Facebook intergration, Twitter, and Footprints have been disabled and removed for the time being since those are services that I do not heavily rely on, however if interest persist I may add Twitter and Facebook intergration later. The ROM does contain most of HTC's common Sense software such as Audio Booster to the Voice Recorder with the removal of the "bloat" software such as the WorldCard Business Card Reader, Java Blend, and JetCet Printing.
Summary:
This basis of this is to remove as much un-neccessary parts of the WM 6.5.3 OS to replace it with Sense to make Sense as much of the main OS as possible.
Instructions for flashing:
Code:
This ROM is compatible with all HD2 devices manufactured by HTC.
If you're a beginner, please read as there's a few things you need to do first.
•You need to install a modified SPL on your device that allows installation of custom ROMs such as this one. It's called a Hard SPL and it's here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433.
•You need to install a compatible radio that works with this ROM. The radios that work with this ROM all have ".50" in their name.
If you have a TMobile USA branded device, then you don't need to flash a radio. The ROM will work just fine with it. However, if you own an asian or european HD2 then you NEED to flash a .50 radio.
* :HSPL 1.66 Minimum recommended.
* :No Radio is included in this release.
* :Correct radio needed to enable 576 ram for NON-T-Mous HD2 users.
* :Please hard reset after flashing.
Info about the ROM:
* Base official T-Mous stock 3.14.531 (T-Mobile US HD2 and HTC HD2 EU compatible)
* MS build 23152 WM6.5.3
*Only compatible with radio version: 2.xx.50.xx
Available memory:
Storage: over 750 mb

* DO NOT INSTALL ANY 3RD PARTY APPS UNTIL TRYING THE ROM FIRST AND READING IF YOUR SOFTWARE IS COMPATIBLE WITH WM6.5.3, This will help to give you the experience of the base ROM
* I dont use 3rd party apps or tweak since my rom is tweaked how i use it daily.
* After testing the rom and your'e happy, Install your software one at a time then soft reset and try the device to see if anything any bugs occur.
Disclaimer:
This is a ROM that I created for myself with me in mind, that I am sharing with the XDA community. If enough general interest is surfaces any feature that is not present or that should be remove will be taken into consideration in future ROMS.

http://www.mediafire.com/?jhn239kfztxd5xs Updated ROM and updated first OP ... don't sleep on this one I will put my old rep on the line and say that this one is as stable as the most popular ROMs
So this is stock Sense ROM, but based on WM 6.5.3 and without twitter, facebook and bloatware?
If yes, it's really cool! However I miss twitter, is it possible to bring it back?
"results"
hello,
well, i got back from droid as few of things i need did not worked. so needed something to start again with
so .. i flashed this and i must say i am pleased very nice, everything thats needed, nothing more. ok, i need some of my usual stuff, but thats MINE .. but ..
of course there should be "but.." you cannot satisfy everyone
the only thing i really miss in this rom are buttons. close/back/send in combo with back .. you get the idea .. one of the main problems in droid is missing those buttons, and destroying hw buttons on the bottom of the phone. yes, i know those hardware buttons are there for that, but as we all know, they are not so good in quality .. so .. if this could be solved, this would be the perfect rom .. well, for me anyway
cheers

I will make a cab for this it is just a registry tweak
If it's just a registry tweak, you can simply post it, I think we can do it ourselves .

cabs are silly for simple registry tweaks.
Since you did not get an answer raven, the entries are listed below. Change them to 0 or delete them if you want the stock 6.5.x interface.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\BubbleTiles]
"TextModeEnabled"=dword:00000001
"HardwareStartKeyEnabled"=dword:00000001
"HardwareDoneKeyEnabled"=dword:00000001

Thanks for posting this registry tweak, however you are coming off little aggressive and negetive, could you not do that please as the emotion is not necessary to help someone out. Thanks JD
