so i'm upgrading my wizard to an 8525. up til now i've managed to get by without a data plan and only text messages. i'm curious how to get cheap data plans on at&t. i called them and they said $29.95/mo JUST for data.
i've heard people getting unlimited data for like $6 a month using proxies or something? i've had no luck perusing google and forums for info on this so hoping somebody here has some answers. thanks!
The cheapest plan I know you can get for unlimited data is the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month, and thats if you get someone thats nice enought to give you that plan since they aren't supposed to give that plan to people with PDAs
so do you know if the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month with work with a hermes? i used to have that with my 8125, but when i bought the 8525 they changed it...if i change it back to the media net plan...will it work? without getting any strange overages on my bill?

Yeah it will work. I've used for the last several months! The only thing to remember is to ONLY connect through wap.cingular, NOT isp.cingular.
I've noticed no problems with mine! When you get the phone the sales rep always tells you that you have to have the pda plan to use the phone. It is against the rules to use the MediaMax plan but between my phone and my wifes phone spending an extra 100 bucks a month for data started to really suck the wallet dry.
Now we both use Media Max 200 +Unl m2m texts. 24.99 Text and data all you want!
There are some other threads out here about this, search media max and you'll find them.
Now your not supposed to do this but many of us get away with it. Just make sure after every rom flash that youve got your connections setting on wap.cingular and UN: [email protected] and Pw: Cingular1
Reps and Phone people will not let you get this plan, GO ONLINE to att.com/mobile and add it there!
tell the reps that you're switching to a razr or something and ask to be switched to a Media Max option which gives you unlimited data and either 200 messages (19.99) or 1500 messages (29.99). MUCH cheaper than getting a PDA data option.
If your unlocked and have the coverage in your area, I would check T-Mobile data rates. I saved a bunch not going with AT&T.

while that's true, you do miss out on using 3G. especially if the prices you get can be close to the same.
so wat u r sayin is that i will lose my 3g connectivity if i get the media max plan instead of the pda......right now i have the 39.99 plan with unlimited internet and messaging.....so do u guys think it will be worth it to switch to the media max??
from the sounds of it no, you can still use 3g. please connect me if i am wrong... anyone?

You're right. You won't lose 3G by going with the lower priced plan. The person who said that you'd lose 3G was comparing using T-Mobile's lower cost plans to AT&T plans.
Oh, sorry if I confused anyone. I meant you lose 3G if you go to T-Mobile for a lower priced data plan. You absolutely will not lose 3G by getting a Media Max plan. I have the Media Max 1500 plan and I was using the Hermes (now Kaiser) and love it.

screw someone that's nice enough.
Do all of your business with AT&T online if possible. Go to the site and select MediaMax from the list (unlimited internet and like 200 text messages I believe) or the upgraded version that's exactly the same except 1500 text messages (for $29.99 instead of $19.99 a month). Do it online and nobody can say no.
getting the cheaper unimited plan for my 8525
If I go online and order the cheaper 29 dollar plan (or was it 39) anway, can I connect my AT&T 8525 to my laptop (tether) and use it for internet service? The AT&T rep told me this cost $80! My AT&T phone is running factory ROM, mobile 5 (mobile 6 when ever it comes out)

There's some people who still are waiting for the "official" release from AT&T. I guess that it all depends on your comfort level and what you're willing to do to/for your Hermes.
i have a cingular 8125, with T-mobile service, and i pay 6 dollars a month, (i dont think i even have to pay that_ because the proxy settings are from MMS settings, hmm.... but yea its super fast, but for 6 bucks, i cant complain

Here's what I've heard ... you can tether on the $20 plan ... but do so at your own discretion since tethering isn't a part of the plan. There's a lot of discussion about this on hofo. So far no one has been charged that I know of.

How did you set up/ where is the $6 tmobile internet?
I just Called At&T and told them to add [Media Max 200 Bundle for $19.99] to my account. they told me that I have 8525 PDA phone. and I told them that I am going to change the phone to razr. Then they added it for me and I reset the phone after changing the setting to wap.cingular
Now it is working fine. with 3G Connection.
Over at AndroidCentral they said you can no longer tether for free if u do it will cause u 14.99 a month? Is this legit? PDA Net is now rendered useless? Anyone shed some light on this?

Although we already knew that a new plan for customers that want to Tether was coming soon and then yesteday, confirmed for November 3rd, the folks over at BGR have recieved details on the new tethering plan. T-Mobile will officially offer the $14.99 /MonthTethering and WiFi-Sharing Add-On beginning November 3rd. The plan will allow subscribers to use their smartphones as a tethered modem or Wi-Fi hotspot. To qualify for the $14.99 Tethering add-on, you will need to have a 3G/HSPA+ capable handset in addition to an unlimited web plan of $19.95 or higher. The tethering plan also counts towards your 5GB data cap. So that means once you’ve used 5GB of data, your speeds will be throttled. The plan will be available for Postpaid and Flex Pay Customers.

To the OP, it's still unlimited data. You'll get dropped to Edge when you pass your 5gig softcap on a data plan. If you pay extra for tethering you'll be added an additional 5gigs. Thus bringing the softcap to 10gigs.
What I'm wondering is what's going to happen to everyone that was grandfathered in with the 10gig data softcap. Do they stay with 10gig data plans or are they knocked down to 5gig softcaps. Yes, I understand it still unlimited but I'm not interested on tethering with an Edge connection.
Excuse my language but Wtf type of sh*t is that? First they don't want you to tether, then they are gonna let u tether for another 5gb and that's it???? They can suck a fat one. Btw I've already been throttled and it aint that bad so I'm pretty sure this new idea of theirs is gonna blow back in their face. If only verizon has the g2 or a htc phone with physical keyboard

Well, they will have their version of the G2, but then what? You'll leave T-Mobile for the Red Devil? They charge for tethering too you know?
Geez, what's the big fuss about them charging for tethering. You'll still be able to tether your connection without paying for the plan, granted it will STILL be against the terms and conditions but there's nothing stopping you from doing so.
My brother tethers his Verizon BlackBerry and he doesn't have any sort of tethering plan. I'm on T-Mobile and I tethered my BBs (when I had them) and my G1 without any issues, now I didn't go out there and stream and download this and that and make it obvious that I was using a lot of data.
If you recall T-Mobile did say that CURRENTLY tethering was not available but they were LOOKING into it because customers are interested. "Looking into it" is just their way of saying "Yeah, we're gonna support tethering but we're figuring out what to charge for it".
Bottom line, you don't like it, leave T-Mobile if you think they're screwing you. Why stress yourself out by *****ing about it?
I'm just wondering about those who are semi-rooted running the wifi tether app? How is t-mobile going to be able to distinguish this from any other data use? I use the wifi tether for root users apk on a daily basis since I got visionary, I guess I'll see on my november billing cycle whether they can tell or not.

That may be how it operates (I do not know) but that is not what the quoted article says. It says that tethering counts towards your 5GB cap.

i.e. if you have a 5GB cap now, you will have a 5GB cap when you add tethering. I assume if you have a 10GB cap now you would have a 10GB cap when tethering.

I don't think they care if you use tether or not. They probably hope you do. It's people who already tether that are mostly likely going to feel the hit. Every smartphone user pays for a data plan which is for 5gigs. What you do with those 5gigs is up to you ex. tether, torrents, xbox live, mp3 downloads, stream porn, its doesn't mater. After your 5gigs are up. Then what? Can hardcore tether users live off an Edge connection? No. Now people who have never tethered before and know nothing about root will think it's awesome. When in fact they could have been tethering long before. When you stop and see it from that angle, how many of these tmo customers who are going to get the tether package will ever hit the 5gig limit? I doubt may of them will. They probably wont even tap into their tethering plan and fall below the 5gig data plan softcap. Which means they've paid $14.99, for data they never even used.
This is assuming that tmo will see any form of data movement weather it be through tethering or receiving a MMS as data. This would tie into the whole tmo can suspect you of tethering because of a 6/8/20/100mb usage her and there. When normally I've never gone pass 500mb a month even with very lite tethering.
Or I could just be flat out wrong.
This is complete bs. Does this apply to older phones too? I'm a hardcore USB tether user on my G1. How will they even be able to tell if I'm tethering or not?

Either way, screw that - I'll never pay for tethering.
I think this was their plan the whole time? Which is most likely why the G2 is locked down the the it is. They want to charge for something that can be done for free if the phone was rooted. I wouldn't be shocked if all phones from this point on is locked up as well.
So technically, they are not allowing unlimited data, correct? I did not read through a lot of this thread, but from what I understood in the first two posts, it seems like T-Mobile is changing their contact, looks like it might be time for me to get out for free.
Good god, why are you people so upset? Tethering isn't technically allowed right now, although tons of people do it. What, are you guys going to stop tethering because T-Mobile is going to charge for an official service? Of course not. You'll use PdaNet or mobile AP and T-Mobile won't give a crap, just like always.

No, it's still unlimited data, it's just that there's a soft cap where they'll throttle you down to Edge if you go over 5GB. But the soft cap applies to all data, whether tethered or not, and always has (it used to be 10GB).

No... if you read around, or simply right above your post, the tether charge will be for the native app. If you go over the 5gig limit they throttle you down to edge speeds
Well since there is no 3G service where I live being bumped down to edge speeds is kind of an idle threat for me lol.

Not if you had tzones added on a non-smartphone before getting the HD2. I have the TZones internet as well that was added back when I had a Nokia phone
T-zone used to be $5 which used wap.voicestream.com in the past. I think the current T-zone is call Web2go and it's for $10; has restricted access to website. You can try using epc.tmobile.com, the new data access point. Please, tell me how it goes.
I Love the 10 dollar unlimited plan.
Ive been rocking this 10 plan on truly unlimited data for many, many months now.
All you had to do was sign up on my t mobile, select the shadow as your phone, go to edit your services, remove your internet, re-add unlimited web for phones 10 dollar option, wait 24-48 hours, manually enter APN internet2.voicestream.com
There you have it, will check to see if the option is still there, if you had it, you are GRANDFATHERED in FOREVER!! 4.5Mbps Download 1.4 Mpbs Upload on Unlimited 10 dollar plan, only works with the hd2 for the Hspa.
Plan not available anymore, 4G 200MB for $15 or an Unlimited 4G option for $30.
64.00 unlimited everything is very nice with this HD2 on Android, lol.
He's right it works..... But T-mobile doesn't give you that plan anymore... if you know someone with that t-zone phone buy him his phone and take over his plan.. lolol... it's best thing to do... Cuz all T-mobile internet APN works on 3G frequencies...
Cuz it's true that we don't need anything else these days... we can text, make phone calls and all that over the mobile data plans....(Google voice, SIP, Ect...) But companies Knows That..lol.. so now you can't buy a data plan by it self anywhere... Bastards trying to make money..lol...
Like me I have a sidekick data Plan Unlimited for 30 bucks (Unlimited 3g Data & Text) I have it in my HD2 with Android on it... with the sidekick APN (hiptop.t-mobile.com)
And the 3g and text works very good...
Those plans are not gonna come back..lolol...
So back to the original question on getting the mms with pics to work, has anyone got it to work?

I had the edge plan for $10 on my Iphone for awhile and it worked great. Tried to do it for my G1 and it would not work and then my iphone broke and I was without a phone so I had to give up the $10 unlimited data... I doubt I will be able to get it back ever. I had to fight with them to get the plan in the first place.

You pay $1.99 for each 2 Mb of data, if I recall correctly, or it may be for each Mb, over the limit.
The amount of bandwidth used depends on how much Internet access you do while tethered.

yes, there's a $10 plan called web2go that works with hd2 too. what you need to do is put your sim card into a dumbphone and call talk to a retention and not regular CSR, but you have to be at least with t-mo for 2 yrs to do it.
The phone is a Google Nexus 4 bought from Google Play store
I tether with the built-in "Tethering & Portable hotspot" using WiFi all day Monday thru Friday on AT&T, and I have gotten text messages from AT&T about data usage and "click here for the tethering plan". I have a grandfathered-in "unlimited LTE" plan with AT&T and they do throttle me to about 0.3m down 0.5m up.
I am considering switching to Tmo because it's much cheaper (60/mo versus 110/mo), I plan on staying on the same phone and just get a SIM card, get the basic talk/text plan and the unlimited 4G plan. Now my question is... in the unlimited 4G it says
"Adds Unlimited Nationwide 4G data on T-Mobiles network. Includes up to 500 MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service."
Does that means I will only be able to tether for 500mb using an unbranded N4 with android's build-in wireless tethering function? Or Tmo is going to be like AT&T just send me text message once a twice a year? My tethering usage is about 2G per week.

Foxfi used to work before.. now they have implemented a new check for tethering which Trekkie's on the headers of transmitted data. There are fixes that rely on editing your browser string to appear like a mobile browser but your best bet is a custom rom that bypasses those checks.
On the note 2 killajoule and Jedi Master worked fine. Haven't checked for the nexus 4
Just change the user agent string on your browser and use the built in tethering.

tmobile has gotten really good at catching you while changing the browsers user agent. but you can get more than 500mb for tethering. the 50+20(unlimited plan) includes 2.5gb tethering, and you can purchase more. all the limited high speed data plan include unlimited tethering.

So if changing the browser agent doesn't work, how do you tether with T-Mobile and bypass the T-Mobile message?

as of now, i have 2.5gb tethering with the unlimited high speed data plan. tmobile doesnt see when i tether my nexus 7, so that makes it easier to use the 2.5gb just for my laptop. i think they also offer 4.5gb for the unlimited high speed plan.
anyways, the last time i changed the user agent, i changed it to android(nexus 7 to be exact), it worked for half a day then they stopped it. oddly, i couldnt get data on my phone after, my phone browser kept sending me to the tmo hotspot page, and none of my apps could connect. i calked tmobile and they reset my data connection to fix it.

Oh, so you have the tethering plan. I have the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan (unlimited data and text and 100 minutes) without an extra hotspot plan, how do I tether without the extra plan and without the tether message coming up?

I wonder if it really is the luck of the draw, and if so I guess I am "lucky". I never really gave the tethering much thought since I got my Nexus 4 last year. I haven't used it that much, once or twice while traveling and a couple of times at work to test stuff using an outside internet connection. I have never been charged or sent any kind of message from T-Mobile. I am on the $60 dollars a month prepaid plan, no tethering plan and I have never hit my 2.5gb data throttling limit. Rooted on stock with TWRP recovery, not that I think that makes much of a difference.

why are you on a $60 prepaid plan??
for $60 a month you can be on a unlimited calls/texts plan with completely unlimited high speed data and 500mb tethering, without any contract. for $70 total, its the same but tmobile also includes 2.5gb tethering.

That is the plan I am on (at least, I think so!). I have no contract, unlimited calls/texts, data that is unlimited (although they throttle 4G after 2.5gb is reached) but was not aware that 500mb tethering is included. Good to know, probably why T-Mob has left me alone so far.

thats not the plan i am talking about. the ai am talking about they do not throttle you after 2.5gb high speed data. the plan im talking about is completely unlimited high speed data.
edit.. i see they changed their plans slightly. for $10 more than you pay, you get completely unlimited high speed data and 2.5gb for tethering. your data speeds will not get slowed down at all.
